Doyle remains behind bars, for now - The Outfit on trial

Doyle remains behind bars, for now

A federal judge not only suggested on Wednesday that retired Chicago cop Anthony “Twan” Doyle lied when he took the stand in his own defense in the Family Secrets mob trial.

U.S. District Judge James Zagel also questioned Doyle’s overall judgment because he actually expected a jury would believe him.

Given Doyle’s poor judgment, Zagel declined to release Doyle on bond, two days after he was convicted in the Family Secrets case of racketeering and taken into custody.

Doyle helped the Outfit to track down a mob snitch and kept reputed mob killer Frank Calabrese Sr. posted on evidence linked to an Outfit murder.

Three retired Chicago police officers and Doyle’s daughter have offered to put up their homes for Doyle’s bond — with a total equity of about $500,000.

Doyle’s attorney, Ralph Meczyk, argued Doyle would never take off and leave his friends and family in the lurch.

But Zagel suggested Doyle’s judgment was so bad that Doyle could believe the judge would not have the homes seized if Doyle took off.

The judge said he would have the homes seized.

“The issue is not what I would do,” Zagel said. “But what he thinks he can get away with.”

Still, Zagel asked for more information on the homes that could be posted for Doyle’s bond and said he would then issue a ruling on whether to give Doyle a bond.

That lying SOB deserves to be behind bars. So what that his wife is sick, we'll never get to see our loved ones again why should he?

Could Doyle be a made man too since they really didn't seem to be following any rules. He is part Italian and part Irish. Just like Marcello.... Could this be a possibility?

STEVE WARMBIR RESPONDS: Anything is possible, but I can tell you there was absolutely no evidence regarding Doyle being made.

why is it taking he jury so long? do you think they are having trouble with Shiro and Lombardo on the murder charges?

STEVE WARMBIR RESPONDS: I have no idea what the jury is up to, and speculation is useless.

Schiro certainly has the least evidence against him.

Lombardo has more but it's circumstantial.

Marcello's attorneys probably did the best job attacking the government's evidence against him for the three murders he's accused of.

Steve that lawyer you speak of is Mr. Breen. Isnt he a former US Attorney himself?

STEVE WARMBIR RESPONDS: Marcello's attorneys are Marc Martin and Tom Breen. Breen used to be an Assistant State's Attorney.

Who would put up their house for a friend? Clearly Doyle either has some great friends, or some dirt on some people.

"That lying SOB deserves to be behind bars. So what that his wife is sick, we'll never get to see our loved ones again why should he?"

What do you think he lied about, and what did he have to do with you not seeing your 'loved ones'?

As for "seeing" his sick wife, his attorney argued he needed to help her move back to Chicago so friends and relatives would be able to help care for her. What has she done that warrants your disdain for her?

From Mitch:
"Clearly Doyle either has some great friends..."

Doyle has great friends because he is a great friend. It's that reason he's in the predictiment he's in, even though the jury chose to believe an admitted murderer instead of him.

In addition to those who were named in court as willing to post property, there are at least 3 other people who were willing if it would have proved necessary.

Hay Excop:

It's a shame they even call Doyle an ex-cop. He got his badge through the outfit like a lot of other guys who spent time up in Oxford.

Don't forgot he was fixing tires at the pound before he got his free ride and a badge.

It figures you would support this trash and use the handle "ex-cop". A real police officer would never support this garbage, he makes every cop look bad. Drop the handle and do your self some justice if you are an ex-cop.

from reader
"Hay Excop:"

I don't know what I find more amusing about your rant, the above salutation or your original name, "reader". It's amusing that instead of using the word "HEY", you use the word the HAY, which is what bullsh@@ starts with. (I'll explain this for you so you won't have to tax your apparently little brain. A bull eats HAY, digests it and even you probably knows what happens with digested food)

First of all, what does it matter that he worked at the pound?

Second, although I doubt the veracity of your claim that Doyle "got his badge through the outfit like a lot of other guys" wouldn't that indicate that the upper eschelon of the police department, the city's career service department and the outfit were/are all in bed together? If this is such a known fact that even YOU knows it to be true, why doesn't the G do something about THAT ongoing criminal activity?

I use the handle "ExCop" because it's shorter than writing "former police officer". And as a former police officer I've known and been exposed to the small minded, prejudiced, narrow minded, uninformed thinking that your post reeks of.

Lastly, your assertion "A real police officer would never support this garbage, he makes every cop look bad" is further proof that you have no idea what you are talking about. As an ex-partner of Doyle's I know scores of "real police" officers who support him and know that his conviction is a travesty of justice. Saying he makes every cop look bad is as true as saying that Jay Marriotti makes every reporter look like no talent hacks.

Doyle does make every cop look bad, how are we as a society supposed to believe that cops are here to protect us when they are in bed with the criminals?

If you don't believe that he did it watch the tapes again.... You must be blinded by the fact that you were once partners with him.

He is a liar and a theif and deserves to be in jail with the rest of them.

And if Ricci hadn't crocked b4 it was his time to stand trial he too should be put in the general population of the prision system.

Let all the other thugs in there help them sort out their problems.

This comes from a victim of these a**h***s.

"And if Ricci hadn't crocked ..."

I beleive you meant croaked, and I agree. I've watched the tapes, and over and over it's Ricci telling Frank Jr that it's he who is loyal to the Calabrese family, and he who found out about the glove and HE who involved Doyle.

And in tape #12-19-99_00-51-54Clip4a Ricca is alone with Frank Sr telling him he's going to have to interpret what Sr was talking about.

You call him a "theif"(sic) yet not even the government hints that he profited from his actions or stole anything.

As Mr. Wambir so acurately pointed out in another blog, the most damaging thing against Doyle was that it appeared he was advocating violence against Nick. I believe he's referring to the cattle prod remark. The tape where that is said is but a mere few moments of a 6 or 7 hour visit. Imagine listening to Sr talking in and out of code for so many hours. If you watch that tape, you'll see that the remark is made after Sr's rant about the sick sister and prositution, and the sick sister needing a psychiatrist and other convoluted coded ramblings. Doyle is laughing when he mentions the cattle prod. I can attest with certainty that he was not talking about killing Nick.

Doyle is no where close to being an intellectual. He talks the talk of the street (which shouldn't be confused with the Code of Calabrese). How many "guys from the neighborhood" could have their conversations, taken out of context, stand up to the scrunity of lawyers, scholars and the general public.

The only thing Doyle is actually guilty of is being loyal to a couple of friends (Ricci and Frank Sr) who probably didn't deserve his friendship. There are some who might say I'm guilty of the same thing by defending Doyle. But I know that Anthony Doyle is an honorable and honest man who has always been loyal to his friends. He was an honest, hardworking police officer and a great partner.

I'm sorry that you are "a victim of these a**h***s" but very few victims of the mob are innocent. Remember the saying "You can't cheat an honest man".

Well look at the 3 innocent victims that they did kill. My grandfather was one of them. So get off your soap box and accept the reality that your so called friend Doyle is just like the rest of them.

Excop is starting to sound like more then just a friend, can we be speaking to the soon to Oxford lunchbox boy himself?

Excop is starting to sound like an acomplice that should be caught too.

When is their sentencing Date? Also is Frank the German Schweiss
going to stand trail in spring.

Steve Warmbir responds: There have been no sentencing dates set for the defendants who went to trial. There hasn't been anything set for certain for Frank Schweihs.

THE GOVERMENT NEED TO STOP THERE HARRASEMENT ON THE ITALIANS AND WHO WE ARE .

THIS IS AMERICA AND WE HAVE BEEN PICKED ON SINCE THE MOVIE ON THE GODFATHER WAS PRODUCED AND THE SERIES THE SOPRANOS .

THE ITALIANS FIRST CAME TO THIS COUNTRY TO LIVE AND WE ARE PROUD ! WE LOVE TO GAMBLE,DRINK WINE AND CHASE THE LADIES AND WE PAY TAXES !! FROM NUNZIO BAGLIERE E MAIL NUNZIO7@VERIZON.NET

I am sorry but any cop who offers his badge for criminal activities gets what they deserve. When you dishonore the uniform you are lowering yourself to the point the crooks don't respect you or look to protect you.

As for his wife I feel bad for her if she is really sick, she shouldn't be hated for standing by her husband, whats that called in marriage (to death do we part) I still believe in marriage for better or worst. Sad ending for what should have been a respectable career!
