The laywers for Joseph "Joey the Clown" Lombardo have suggested someone else who should be the chief suspect in the 1974 slaying of federal witness Daniel Seifert.

The late bail bondsmen and businessman Irwin Weiner.

Lombardo is accused of killing Seifert because Seifert was scheduled to be a witness against Lombardo in a federal criminal case involving embezzlement of a Teamster pension fund.

But Lombardo wasn't only one charged in the criminal case from the 1970s. So was Weiner.

Weiner, as the prime suspect in the Seifert slaying, works for Lombardo's defense team for a few reasons.

The title application for one of the cars used in the Seifert slaying was notarized by a woman who worked in Weiner's office.

To Lombardo's detriment, the application has his fingerprint on it.

But Lombardo contends he worked for Weiner and was in his office all the time, so he may have picked up the title application on Weiner's secretary's desk by mistake.

A police scanner was found in the car used in the Seifert murder. The prosecution contends Lombardo bought it. Lombardo points out he was buying scanners for Weiner, who ran a towing business that needed to find out when and where car accidents happened.

Lombardo, at least for a while, had good relations with Seifert.

But Seifert and Weiner would clash, even though Weiner was an original investor in Seifert's fiberglass factory.

Best of all for the defense, Weiner is dead and can't argue that he didn't have Seifert killed.

The defense argued that Weiner had even more to lose with Seifert testifying, although they did not spell out why this was.

Seifert was going to be able to link two checks to Lombardo that were allegedly part of the illegal proceeds from the Teamster pension fund. Lombardo contends the checks were for back wages.

When Seifert died, the case against Lombardo was dismissed.
