Inside the Family Secrets mob trial with Sun-Times reporter Steve Warmbir

J'accuse

It isn't all talk of bleeding fingers, burning saint cards and whacked stool pigeons when alleged Outfit hitman Frank Calabrese Sr. and his son, Frank Jr., get together for a secretly recorded chat.

In a conversation between father and son in February 1999, at a prison in Milan, Mich., the son breaks the tedium by apparently accusing the father of passing gas.

"You farted," Frank Calabrese Jr. tells his father.

"Yeah, I did . . . " Frank Sr. responds.

Now, I say apparently, because words are seldom what they seem in mob conversations.

Perhaps, farted is some clever Outfit code for expelling the air out of someone - permanently.

Or maybe it just means, well, farted.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John Scully, usually quite thorough in asking Frank Calabrese Jr. about every nuance of the recorded conversations, was no help in this matter.

He passed right over the gas portion of the conversation.

Perhaps Calabrese Sr.'s attorney, the ever colorful Joseph Lopez, can address it during cross-examination.
