Frank Calabrese Jr. secretly recorded conversations with a lot of people, including his father, Frank Sr.
He kept the reels running after he got out of prison with his father and taped people who worked for his father in a variety of illegal pursuits.
But he drew the line, at least initially, with his stepmother.
Diane Cimino was Frank Calabrese Jr.'s stepmother, and Frank Calabrese Sr.'s second wife.
The feds have not charged Calabrese Sr.'s wife but have suggested she helped him run his illegal mob business while he was in prison.
Frank Calabrese Jr. testified he wanted to give her a fair shot. He didn't want to see her go to jail with two young children at the time.
So he told her she could get in a lot of trouble if she continued to help her husband.
"She started crying and said she didn't know how much more of this she could take," Calabrese Jr. said.
She spoke to Calabrese Sr. over the phone while he was in prison.
She presented her problem, and Calabrese Sr. came up with quite a solution, his son testified.
Calabrese Jr. said his father asked her: "You don't know nothing, do you?"
Getting the gist, she readily agreed, saying, "No, I don't know nothing," Calabrese Jr. testified.
And Cimino proceeded to tell her stepson that very fact, "with an attitude," he said.
She didn't know anything.
Calabrese Jr. testified he told her, "If you don't know nothing, I guess you don't have anything to worry about."
Then he proceeded to secretly record her.
