Investigators had warned William "Billy" Dauber the Outfit had put a hit on him.

One day after a court hearing Dauber attended on July 2, 1980, his handler, ATF Agent Dennis Laughrey, had offered to follow Dauber and his wife, Charlotte home, just to be on the safe side.

Dauber declined.

The decision sealed his fate.

Billy Dauber and his wife, Charlotte, were gunned down in their car on a rural Will County road.

Frank Calabrese Sr. took part in the murders and later that afternoon described them to his brother, Outfit killer Nicholas Calabrese, according to Nicholas Calabrese's testimony in the Family Secrets trial.

Frank Calabrese Sr. told his brother that members of so-called Wild Bunch mob crew had been dogging the murder, but when Calabrese Sr. got involved, he lit a fire under them.

Frank Calabrese Sr. was driving a pace car in front of the Dauber's car to slow the couple down enough so the van containing the murderers could pull beside them.

Behind the wheel of the van containing the killers was reputed Outfit killer Ronald Jarrett.

As Jarrett pulled beside the Dauber's car, William "Butch" Petrocelli opened up with a carbine, and Gerald Scarpelli did the same with a shotgun.

The Dauber's car veered off the road into an apple tree. Petrocelli got out of the van, leaned into the Dauber's car and fired to ensure the job was completed.

It was a violent death for a violent man.

Dauber had killed for the mob, beat people up to collect street tax and ran his own chop shop.

Dauber, jammed up possible gun charges and facing a return to prison, had decided to cooperate.

He proved to be an extremely valuable informant, court filings show.

His wife happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Who did Dauber inform on? Are the court filings on the PACER site?

STEVE WARMBIR RESPONDS: The filing isn't on PACER but in the next few days, I'll have an item that shows Dauber's value to the feds.

what is the pacer site?

The site you want is www.ilnd.uscourts.gov

Click on CM/ECF and you'll get the start of the Pacer site.

The site isn't free. You have to provide a credit card to set up a site.

you got it wrong...jerry scalise drove the van that day when Dauber got whacked....not Ronald Jarrett

STEVE WARMBIR RESPONDS: The information you're reading in the post comes from Nick Calabrese's testimony.
