Hooray Mary Mitchell! Somebody needs to be brave enough to call out Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin what they really are doing: rallying up the vicious race-baiting hate mongers. And a word for Sarah: stirring up hate is not Christian!

The liberal media should apologize for misleading the American public about Obama and the continuous hatered you engender towards Bush and all Republicans. You media are so far in the tank for Obama, it's disgusting. You never report the truth about him and his past dealings with Ayers, with ACORN, the fact that he was a trainer for their organizers.

Plus the insane attacks on the parentage of Palin's youngest, the attacks on her daughter,you people have lost all credibility with most American with any real intelligence.

Welcome to the environment persons like YOU created. So, free speech should be squelched because a few freaks say horrible things? Mary Mitchell should apologize to Sarah Palin and the American people for her abuse of the privilege of the press.

In a blog post in the Chicago Sun-Times online, self-documented hater Mitchell accused Palin of bringing out the worst in her supporters using press misquotes as "evidence."

Mitchell needs to stop taking everything in the media that appeals to her bigotry a bouche ouverte, cease and desist from journalistic malpractice, and surrender her mojo immediately for the duration of the campaign.

Mitchell forgets both real and implied racist attacks are knives that cut on both edges. She has not only set a negative tone, but a dangerous one. She should be censured.

When Sarah Palin was first chosen as McCain's running mate, my only concern was that she didn't have the sophistication or world experience that you would associate with an official in that high of office. In the following weeks, my concerns rose to a panic! Not only is she not sophisticated or worldly, but she is downright ignorant and has no diplomacy. It is shocking to me that a "good Christian" as herself is inciting violence at her rallys and spreading untruths about Obama. I can understand why the McCain campaign is not allowing her to do more personal interviews. If anyone is hurting the McCain campaign, it is without a doubt Sarah Palin.

Mary your call for an apology requires sensitivity and integrity on Palin's part that she has yet to show. A little empathy would help, also. A person who has those mentioned qualities would not speak in a manner which would encourage those kinds of verbal attacks during the rallies in the first place. And, upon hearing those words of vitriol, a quality candidate would call for it to stop immediately. They would use a platform not only win over supporters, but do it in a respectful way. Anyone can be a "pit bull", but it takes a person with real substance to articulate why the country should vote for them. Fear was used by some of the worst leaders in history. We need unity and civility - not hate.

With that preface, allow me to voice my opinion on the racially charged remarks made by Rep. John Lewis of Georgia the other day:

The Obama campaign committee had been counting on racial tension being a factor at some point in this political campaign for quite some time. The problem was that it had simply not manifested itself to a degree that was conducive to their preconceived notions, allowing them to adopt a hammering retaliatory strategy - which you and I both know they had already drawn up.

This is understandable, because the current point-lead between McCain and Obama is eerily reminiscent of the numbers put up by John Kerry in 2004, showing him leading George W. Bush - effectively "kicking his butt".
Long story short: Polls cannot be trusted -
It is not a margin with which to comfortable.

Then some film clips became available of angry white people voicing their discontent at John McCain’s speaking engagements - angry with Congress chiefly, and the recent monetary policies implemented (some would arguably say imposed) by its members. Obviously, some political figures felt that was justification enough, even if the Obama campaign leadership did not. Enter the remarks of John Lewis, comparing such displays (with obligatory melodrama) to the racially charged policies of former Alabama Governor, George Wallace.
The almost comic disparity of the comparison was not lost with many people, wondering “What the… ?

The Obama campaign leadership now found itself in a disadvantageous position, having to implement their retaliatory strategy based on a significantly weaker argument than they had hoped would present itself. Damn.
Of no help was the fact that John McCain had actually displayed some chivalry, trying to maintain civil decorum during these events.

Nevertheless, the genie is out of the bottle now, and the stark irony in this matter is that the greatest potential loser in this dust-up is Barack Obama. He has supporters on his side of the board that are well known to be choleric of temper and have been waiting like coiled serpents to strike (or, "bring it") the moment an opportunity such as this arose.

To their credit, I find it remarkable that such supporters, like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Louis Farrakhan have managed to reign themselves in - or allowed themselves to be reigned –
which is obviously a matter of conjecture.

As far as your disgust with Palin goes, I would like to think you were just as appalled back when the fine citizens of Washington D.C. exercised some questionable judgment when they RE-elected Marion Berry - AFTER being a convicted felon... And inarticulate?

Lately, the Republican rallies have seemed a little too close to other rallies that the South has been known for in the past. However, no one has felt obligated to wear hoods to the campaign stops.

It infuriates me to know end to listen to McCain and Palin speak, as well as their racist friends at Faux News and fellow racist Rush Limbaugh. Limbaugh recently promoted the ignorance that was on display last week in Wisconsin and Minnesota by asserting that Barack is an Arab because his father was from the Arab part of Africa. If Rush would stay off of the Oxycontin, maybe he would realize that Kenya is not part of the Arab world.

Hopefully, most Americans will be smart enough to see that McCain is out of ideas, and has nothing else left to try to turn around his sinking ship. However, America elected the current Bush to two terms, so they haven't necessarily shown that they will be up to the task.

I want to thank you for your boldness and clarity in your article concerning Gov. Palin's inciteful campaigning. You know,maybe because Alaska is not so diverse as the National Scene, she should get diverse training and give her a chance to know how the rest of the country feels!

As I read the comments to Ms. Mitchell's article, I was struck and frightened by the depth and strength of hate and anger on both sides of this election. The commentators who say that the First Amendment gaurantees the freedom of speech are correct, to a point. The Supreme Court of the United States has always held that freedom of speech is limited when it is used solely for the purpose of causing harm. The famous example is yelling "fire" in a theatre when there is no such event. However, rather than point out this well known fact and discuss it calmly, various people have used Ms. Mitchell's blog to write hate-filled and accusatory comments. Have we driven ourselves so far apart that we can no longer see, or desire, a middle ground? Have we lost, or thrown away, the ability to meet in the middle always understanding the compromise is better than causing the other person to lose everything he or she holds dear. If the Treaty of Versailles taught us anything, it should be (as my father always taught me) that one always let the other person walk away with respect and dignity for one day he or she may be in the position to allow you to do the same. We will all have to live with each other come November 5. Don't we want to enjoy the process? Just something to think about.

While I do not think Sarah Palin should be censored, her behavior and speeches have been completely irresponsible. Let us be clear, someone yelling "kill him" during a rally and not being addressed by the Vice Presidential Candidate to state that they do not advocate violence is irresponsible. I think maybe some respondents are confused about the word "censure". It isn't the same thing as "censor".

I totally disagree with Mary Mitchell in writing such an essay calling on Palin to apologize for her comments and be censured ... but for different reasons than those I've read herein. It is as if Mitchell expects a pig not to oink & pass gas all day or a slug not to slither. I could see the logic if Mary Mitchell was addressing such opinion to a person with a modicum of human decency, but Sarah Palin has none that I have seen. Whatever it takes and how many people she must step on to ascend the ladder, Sarah Palin has no problem whatsoever stepping over the bodies & souls to get there. The second issue - censuring - is also wrong. I'm not in favor of censuring ANY speech unless and until that person is our employee. Now if the citizens of Alaska calls on censuring her - since she is their employee for the moment - that's their business. However, until she is the rest of our employee as vice-president or president, I am totally against any notion of censorship of either her or anyone else. I believe that in a truly free society (which America is not), every citizen should have their say up to the point at which one actively plans or advocates a crime. Hence, the person who yelled "Kill him," should be the one censured, arrested and charged. Not Sarah Palin.

As this election draws closer, I believe that not only will Barack win but he will in a landslide. Not because he's black. Not because he's a democrat and not a republican. I speak on behalf of intelligent, educated Canadians when I say that it is so crystal clear how limited Sarah Palin is in her capacity to perform with credibility on the national and international stages. Her vocabulary and grammar are painful to hear. I can't help but cringe when she responds to unfiltered interview questions. Too often she resorts to her written, "safe, bail out phrases" (provided to her by Bush's former speechwriter) when asked questions she is too inexperienced to address with her own, earned knowledge and intellect.

Most frighteningly, she is a delusional Creationist who believes very little in science. America needs someone who is a wee bit more forward-thinking at this point!

Snap out of it, USA! You are THE MOST HATED country on Planet Earth right now. What are you going to do? Elect a mouthy, former beauty queen as your potential step-in if something should happen to McCain? What a shame that would be!

I support neither party. However, it is not ok to call any of the candidates names nor comment on their children. "pit-bull mentality, Then give her childrens some direction especially the pregnant unwed one". This is exactly the reason I will not support either negative campaign. Both sides are negative, offer mudslinging without solution and are incabable of telling the truth. I did not vote for Obama, because of his lack of experience and credentials, nor did I vote against him, because I didn't believe McCain was the answer to our problems and I think that Obama has great potential to accomplish a lot of good for this country.

I am not unhappy with Obama's victory because I don't think he will be controlled by people like Mary Mitchell, who think that anyone who says something she doesn't like deserves to be 'censured' - whatever that means. And If we're going to start passing around apologies, there are lots of folks on both sides that need to 'apologize' and be 'censured'.

What Mary fails to understand is that regardless of what views Palin and her supporters might hold, they have already been 'censured' by the election itself.

My hope and my belief is that Obama is bit more broad minded and far-sighted than Mary Mitchell.

Palin can only be held responsible for what she says not some yahoo in the crowd. But a man running for president is making the ultimate sacrifice and is a patriot. That is the toughest job on the planet, but when you question an Americans honor and insinuate he is a terrorist or associates with a terrorist and you can't prove it you are wrong and using one of the most hurtful and dispicable events in history as a tool for your own means and that is wrong. Your guy won with character, wisdom, skill and grace. Why you have to call names and snipe at one of his properly chosen opponents is low class. I am sure Gov. Palin did not approve of the gutter comments against Senator Obama and I am sure that he did not approve of the Panthers with a nightstick standing outside a voting precinct in Philadelphia yesterday. I have concluded that Sarah Plain has a undiagnosed learning disability. It is clear that you cannot artriculate her thoughts becuase of her learning disability. I feel really bad for her because she has no knowledge that she has a disability and that help is available. Read her words that are printed. Listen to her speech. She cannot articulate a complete thoughts. Her usual wordage consists of just a bunch of thoughts all rambling together. That is a true sign of a learning disability.

They appealed to the worst in our human nature: fear of the "other"--- until Tuesday evening. Then John McCain makes his concession speech and Obama's suddenly an OK guy. What about all that anger that they stirred up out on the hustings? You can't just turn it off, like a faucet. I hate Palin. I do. She says and thinks so many dumb, hate-inspiring things. But I defend her right to do so so that I might respond as I choose. And, well..that is the first amendment to the constitution of rights. So...censure? Ummm...no.

Some of you need to read up on how a campaign is or has been waged.
Ms. Palin did not write her script, in fact she did not even do her own research, she repeated what McCain and his people (Bush cronies) wanted her to say.
To blame her for what she said is ridiculous and shows how little you know about what really goes on in the political world.
McCain was chosen to lead the Republican party because everyone would feel sorry for a maverick who got himself shot down in Vietnam do to his maverick ways.

Seriously, think about who is really to blame ... when she traveled she didn't have time to buy clothes, they were purchased for her and delivered. The free speech practiced at the Palin rallies was so free that the Secret Service went into overdrive. I'm an independent ALASKAN female, and I'm going to agree with Mary on part of this. No matter what anyone says, Sarah Palin behaved badly during this campaign, often coming across as anything but CHRISTIAN.

I've had a few years to watch Sarah's actions not only as the governor of the state where I live but also as a small town mayor who kicked butt on a corrupt old white boys network. I've always felt that she was gifted at an early age with more class AND compassion than most politicians could ever muster (or fake) in a life-time. But through-out the past couple of months, a nasty (and seemingly clueless) pit bull seems to have come to life in her that I, as a woman and as an Alaskan, am waaaaay bummed to see.

SO IMAGINE THIS SCENARIO: Picture that the mud-slinging, name-calling, hate-provoking tactics against Obama begin in the McCain campaign, and Sarah simply says "Nope. Not gonna go there. If we can't win the White House on our own merits, without resorting to repeatledly and shamelessly slamming Obama, then I don't wanna be part of this party. I'm outta here", and she packs up her bags and her family and goes home. She says "Thanks but NO THANKS" to the negative ads and the constant attacks on Obama that the McCain camp chose to keep it's focus on and quietly splits, taking the HIGH ROAD and confidently stepping out of the spotlight.

This country would be lining up now to get her in the White House next! She would be QUEEN of the USA!

Can you picture the grand pedastal the American people would have placed under her by now? (We know campaigns can be won without the tripe that we recently witnessed from her side because Obama won without going deep into that territory, even though there was plenty of muddy ammo with which he could have slung back.)

Further, religious institutions should not be allowed to preach politics from the podium and still expect to retain their tax-emempt status.

It seems a number of commenters here misunderstand the world 'censure'.

It does NOT mean 'censor'!

Nobody (except maybe McCain staffers) is saying Palin should not be allowed to say what she wants.

To be censured is to reprimanded - that is, she should be scolded or criticized for her statements.

Usually, it's used in the context of some authoritative body ("censured by the US Senate", or as my Republican namesake in PA recently engineered for another Republican, "censured by the Montgomery County Republican Party".)

It's not clear what the censuring institution is intended to be here -- perhaps the media, perhaps public opinion. Perhaps the Berkeley city council would like to do so as well.

Censuring someone is a lot more civilized than the sort of vile hatred expressed in some of these comments. Agree or disagree, I think the tone of many of these comments speaks very poorly of their authors.

But this has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with limiting freedom of speech. It is, instead, an exercise of freedom of speech.

So disagree with Mary if you wish. Defend Palin -- perhaps you feel her remarks do NOT contribute to the negative behavior of her supporters. Perhaps you think they were planted by Obama. Maybe you think the media lied about the reported events, and it's all a left-wing conspiracy.

But there's nothing hateful, nothing anti-1st amendment, and nothing racist at all in this post.
