It was bad enough that the Rev. Jesse Jackson disgraced himself by dragging Sen. Barack Obama's name into the gutter with the offensive " I want to cut off his nuts" comment, but his use of the dreaded n-word played right into the hands of his critics and makes him look like a hypocrite.
Well, he doesn't just look like a hypocrite. On this issue, Jackson is a hypocrite. The days of leaders telling followers: "Do as I say, not as I do" are long over.
All of this negative publicity reduces Jackson--an icon in the civil rights movement--to a caricature and tarnishes his legacy. But most of all, his bitter comments make him look foolish, and I find that incredibly sad.
Mary Mitchell is a columnist for the
Dime store reverend talk at its best!
What is the difference between Michael Richards and Jesse Jackson? I've wrestled with this question over and over the last week or so, and the only answer I came up with is...one was man enough to rant out loud, while the other one was so shameful that his rant was done in a whisper. Why should we march, picket and hold hands when Richards, Imus and numerous others make their so called "mistakes" and then sweep it under the rug when Jesse Jackson does the exact same thing he leads protest and hold public speeches about? I'm ashamed, I'm appalled and I'm outraged over one of our biggest civil rights activists in my time would have the nerve to smile in Senator Obama's face and publicly support Senator Obama when the camera's are on and bulbs are flashing, but when the camera's stop rolling would call him a N***** and, furthermore want to cut his B**** off. Shame on you Jesse, Shame on you !!!!
Mary, he doesn't look like a hypocrite----HE IS A HYPOCRITE.....But worse yet, he needs to account where has all the donations and grants gone? Money that was targeted for the poor. Money to help the people, the needy--not him. Where is it? I see he flew off to Europe. He sure is helping alot of neighborhood people touring and spending money there (LOL). Lets see, use the N-word, threaten bodily harm to Obama, he flies to Europe. Has baby out of wedlock and Latanya Haggarty gets shot by CPD, he's off to Decatur. Robert Russ gets shot by CPD, he's off to Mississippi. Mary, I see more than a coincidence....Your thoughts?
Jackson should have known Foxnews was out to get him. Bill O'reily has been talking negetive about Jackson since the O'reily Factor has been on the air. Foxnews dosn't like Black Democrats. Listen to how Hannity talks about blacks in the inner city. He dose not have a clue about what gose on. Go to youtube and type in Foxnews and Black people, it breaks down alot of interviews about what they say about Black America. And for Jackson to go on there and make a fool of himself was really bomb. Jesse you don't speak for me.
Here's one for you all:
"There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs -- partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs."
Booker T. Washington
Ms. Mitchell? Did you Say, "What JJ said, made him look like a HYPOCRITE"? I'M newly 50 years old, I was 10 when MLK got assinated. Every since then, "I've been curiously," observing JJ and based on that, I arrived at my own opinion of JJ. He taught me NOT to ever be a follower, NEVER allow another person to think/act for me! If I had to make wrong/bad decision's in life, I'd be THE ONE to reap the front glory & life's A** whipping at the end of the day. I thank JJ and now Al-S for the lesson's in life of WHAT/HOW not to be. I know I'm not made to be a leader, I'm too much of a loner for that, but I'm sure as heck is not a FOLLOWER! I hope all those folk's who's made sacifices for JJ, his son & daughter-N-law SEE'S them all for WHAT THEY ARE! Con People, Shysters and now as far as JJ goes, A LOW DOWN & DIRTY HYPOCRITE! Folk Keep your own power and start THINKING FOR YOURSELVES!
We're not going to win this one.
Maybe we can attribute Jackson's "slip-ups" to his age. However, it seems as though he has been creating negative news for a long time (fathering a child out of wedlock and while married; and being caught using racial terms (again) through a open mike when he refered to Jews as "hymies."
It seems as though retirement may be in order. Jesse has lost his touch and his focus. He has let fame go to his head (if it wasn't already there). He is now insignificant and not credible, as far as being a leader of the black community, because he got greedy.
Mary, your thoughts?
Jesse says Obama is talking down to African-Americans, yet in the same instance calls them 'n***ers' himself. Hmmm!
Agreed. Maybe the Right Reverend "Baby Daddy" was stung by those comments. JJ continues to lose all credibility among free thinking people regardless of color as he hurdles towards a solitary MILLIONAIRES retirement. Alas, there may be an opportunity for him to redeem himself by choosing to save the children in CPS, whisper comments into Toddler Stroger's ear about the those who rely on Cook County Health Services. The dwindling stores at local food banks. I could go on but HOPE is DEAD!
2010
you may think jesse jackson was an icon. i disagree,i think he should be in jail for extorition, the many businesses he boycotted where for his own gain.why doesn't rev. sharpton and his followers boycott operation push. if that was a white guy using the n word he'd be run out of town.look what happened to IMUS.point taken i hope.
Unplug for good!
Greast men are leaders not great at speeches.
He is not an icon, I have yet to talk to any black that I know that feels the way you do.
Most are embarressed of him.
His bitter commments make him for what he is, a fool, who articulates speech, with his head so far up, he doubtfully knows his own people who are shooting themselves in the hood.
Lets be real.
Jesse has 'pulled the Pin.' Egomaniacs, often self-destruct in their insatiable need to be recognized. So goes Jesse.
THE MAN MADE A MISTAKE, LIFE GOES ON, FOX NEWS IS GOING TO SPIN THIS
STORY FOR MISCHIEF, AND THAT'S WHAT THEY DO!
THIS MAN HAS BEEN ON THE FRONTLINE ALL HIS LIFE, HE MADE A MISTAKE
HE APOLOGIZED, SHOULD WE CRUCIFY HIM OR FORGIVE HIM, I SAY FORGIVE!
IF YOU LIVE IN A GLASS HOUSE, YOU SHOULDN'T THROW STONES!
Jesse's time has come and gone. He's an opportunist who has run out of opportunities. Rest in peace, Jesse. You've made yourself irrevelent.
Not sad, just revealing the true colors of what he has always been, an ignorant hypocrite. The days of Jesse and his shakedowns of hard working companies and the black community are over. Maybe he can now spend time with his illegitimate child in California.
