Why John Wienke chose Michigan

The top-rated quarterback in Illinois--and one of the top 10 in the nation--is John Wienke of Tuscola, a 6-4, 212-pound lefty who hails from a school of only 270 students that is located only 25 miles south of the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. So how did he end up with a scholarship to Michigan?

It is much too early to anoint a 16-year-old as the heir apparent to John Elway and Peyton Manning. But in the wake of Maine South's opening 48-22 victory over Schaumburg, it isn't off the wall to tout Charlie Goro as one of the most promising quarterback prospects we've seen in several years.

The 2007 high school football season in Illinois opens today and I am reminded when I covered my first game for the old Chicago Daily News on Sunday, Sept. 8, 1968.
