As a prelude to Monday night's NCAA championship game between Memphis and Kansas, which will put two former Chicago Public League backcourt stars, some readers wondered if Memphis' Derrick Rose would make the All-Simeon team and if Kansas' Sherron Collins would make the All-Crane team.
Yes and no.
Rose, Deon Thomas, Nick Anderson, Bobby Simmons and Ben Wilson are no-brainer picks for the All-Simeon team, which dates to the early 1980s.
Which means there is no room for Calvin Brock, a former Chicago Sun-Times Player of the Year.
And don't forget Tim Bankston, Bryant Notree, Cody and Deon Butler, Marcus Alderson, Ervin Small and Tim Flowers.
Collins doesn't make the cut at Crane, which has a much longer basketball history than Simeon.
The first five? Eugene Ford, Dan Davis, Jim Robinson, Ken Colliers Norman and Clarence Wordlaw.
But that quintet doesn't include a floor leader, a ball-handling guard. How about Anthony Manuel or Nate Williams? But who do you drop to make room for him?
The bench would include James Jackson, Jerome Freeman, Joe Daughrity, Frank Burks, Tony Allen, Bob Dillard and Will Bynum.
