The Blackhawks Stanley Cup rally strangled downtown with (allegedly) 2 million fans.
In the 7th inning, the White Sox were beating the Cubs in another round of the Crosstown Classic at Wrigley Field.
And the late, famed Jimbo's in the shadow of Sox Park has been reborn as Cork and Kerry at the Park. At about 5 p.m., new owner Billy Guide will pour the first pints at 33rd and Princeton in far too long.
"We got the city license yesterday and the state license this morning and we're good to go," said Guide, who also owns Cork and Kerry in Beverly.
"We're really shooting for opening today. It's a good weekend for baseball in the city despite the lack of good baseball in the city. And it's the Hawks big day, too. Such a special day in the city."

Chicago Mom blogger Karen Wehner recently posted a story about trying to get her kids to spend a good old-fashioned snow day outside building a snow man.

"By about 9:00, I was ready to go outside. "Let's build a snowman!" I shouted. "We've lived here 7 years and we've never built a snowman! I think today's the day. Who's with me?"

My 10-year-old: "Do I have to go outside?"
My 4-year-old: "I don't want to build a snowman."
My 2-year-old: "Dips." (This is what he calls his boots; I interpreted this as raging agreement with my snowman idea)."

What kid doesn't want to build a snow man, or at least peg his sister in the head with a snowball?

I used to live for that.

Edgewater will officially "unveil" and dedicate the Bryn Mawr Bricolage on Saturday August 11th. The intergenerational project included residents of all ages.

The 185-foot long public art piece will be the largest community-based public art piece in Chicago and it's basis is the history and geography of our community. Included is a giant blowup of an antique postcard of the Edgewater Beach Hotel.

At his best, Mark Konkol is a White Sox fan. He lives on the South Side. He enjoys cold beer. At one time or another over the last 10 years, he's covered Chicago and Cook County government, city schools, transportation and the ins-and-outs of neighborhood life. E-mail him at mkonkol@suntimes.com.
