Illini unveil tough basketball schedule

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Expected to have his best team in years, Illinois coach Bruce Weber unveiled a rugged schedule Thursday that includes five high-profile nonconference games.
Beyond its annual Braggin' Rights meeting with Missouri on Dec. 22 and an ACC/Big Ten Challenge matchup with North Carolina on Nov. 30, Illinois will play Gonzaga in Seattle on Dec. 4, and face Texas, plus Pitt or Maryland, in New York City on Nov. 18 and 19.
``With an experienced team that we feel can be competitive nationally,'' Weber said, ``we were aggressive in our non-conference scheduling with the goal in mind to be prepared heading into conference play. The Big Ten promises to be as strong as it has been in many years, so there is no question we will need to compete at a high level each and every night out.''
Illinois--which will be led by seniors Demetri McCamey, Mike Tisdale, Mike Davis and Bill Cole--should have the best depth it has had under Weber. A trio of sophomores (D.J. Richardson, Brandon Paul and Tyler Griffey) who also saw significant playing time return, and a freshman group led by McDonald's All-American Jereme Richmond, Meyers Leonard and redshirt Joseph Bertrand also should make a serious contribution.
The Illini, who missed the NCAA tournament for the second time in three years, will need to be improved to compete in a Big Ten in which Michigan State, Purdue and Ohio State again are expected to set the bar high.
