Breaking down Public League playoff brackets

With all the negativity floating around these days regarding the Chicago Public League -- from the Wayne Blackshear debacle to no visiting fans in the stands to the various altercations in and around city games -- the one jewel remains intact: the Chicago Public League playoffs.

The Public League coaches met Saturday morning and ironed out the 32-team field. The city playoffs tip off Feb. 4 as 32 teams go at it in what is really a fun, entertaining tournament where every team and every player typically leave it all on the floor. The second-round games will take place Feb. 11, the quarterfinals Feb. 15 at UIC, the semifinals Feb. 18 at DePaul and the title game Feb. 22 at UIC.

Whitney Young is the top seed, with Lincoln Park No. 2, Curie No. 3 and, in what is the one surprise of all the seeds, Brooks is the No. 4 seed. North Lawndale, one of the elite teams in the state, is the No. 5 seed.

Looking at the brackets more closely, a real battle is shaping up in the lower bracket, where red-hot Hyde Park could collide with Darius Smith and Marshall in a second-round game. The winner would then likely get Lincoln Park in the quarterfinals. Other second-round matchups of intrigue could be Simeon vs. Vocational. Will 20-win Vocational get the respect they are seeking with a win over Simeon? And can Crandall Head and Crane put a scare into top-seed Whitney Young in the second round?

A Whitney Young-North Lawndale rematch -- the two teams battled in an overtime classic in mid-January, which Young won -- would take place Feb. 18 at DePaul in a semifinal battle. North Lawndale would need to get by No. 4 Brooks in the quarterfinals, while Young would likely player either No. 8 Vocational or No. 9 Simeon in the quarterfinals.

The biggest winner in the seeds may be Foreman. Terry Head's Hornets are the No. 6 seed but are in the same bracket as the Wayne Blackshear-less Curie team. Foreman is now in position to make some noise and advance to the Public League semifinals.

This year the public league play-offs are wide open.Dont count out Brooks the #4 seed,Chris Head is an excellent coach who gets the most out of his kids and he has won a state title when he was coaching at Westinghouse. With all the great talent in the public league, this years tourny will be a fun time in the gym for all basketball fans

You must be crazy if you have any of Al Raby losing to CVS. On guard play alone this team can match up with the best in the red west (which they will be in next year). Even in other sources they have Al Raby winning the game (By the way one source says that they have to aggressive sophmore guards when in actuality its a senior and a sophmore. I'm tellin you this team is a force to be reckoned with. Andrew Mack is a heck of a ballplayer that no one talks about. I've been to several of their games and this kid is really impressive. Is he being recruited and where? I know a lot of coaches that would love to have this kid.

i think North lawndale got a bad seed. they played young well and also i think they have a better team than all the teams in the playoffs. i also think the public league is tired of simeon winning. Even though there record isnt as the past years the played better competion than brooks. Brooks will get blast by north lawndale. also lincoln park wont beat marshall in the second round if that the match up in the second round. I think young and lawndale were the best two teams this year and it should be the city finals but once again public leauge being like the bcs and showing favorite but dont be shock if your city finals are marshall and north lawndale just watch people cause once again the city is starting to get like the bcs when it comes to playoffs

i am going for south shore

Julian is going to take city for a upset to the city .

JULIAN IS GOIN TO UPSET CRANE..

I think Uplift will upset Whitney Young in the first round

the kid everone needs to watch is daniel cleveland great defender and i inside present on the boards hope his ankle heals in time for cvs game his is only in his second year

I think von Steuben will be the sleeper this year. the young panthers have been playing well leaders Jamal Dantzler and Jermaine Hiler playing well. dnt forget they 2 shooters Esteban Vega and Nolan Williams. there gonna make it to the quaterfinal

you must be stupid if you think cvs is losing to al raby the game is clearly a blow out. STupid!!

like i said Von Steuben was gonna beat Fenger and i also said to watch out for Esteban Vega and Nolan Williams and Jamal Dantler those three really won the game for them. Nolan williams was a big boost off the bench in the first half getting 5 off rebounds dats impressive for a 6'2 guard that is only known for his shooting. I guarantee that Von stueben makes it to the quarterfinal if those three play good

I SEE SOME OF YOU ARE GOING WITH SOME LONGSHOTS, THIS
IS BASKETBALL NOT HORSERACING!
IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE HORSES YOU WON'T WIN!
THIS TOURNAMENT WILL COME DOWN TO YOUNG AND NORTH
LAWNDALE, BUT IF CHRIS HEAD GETS HIS GROUP TO THE P
THEN HOLD ON TO YOUR HATS, THE MAN CAN COACH, CONGRATS
TO CHICAGO VOCATIONAL, A SCHOOL WITH RICH BASKETBALL
TRADITION AND LEO MAN, VINCE CARTER AT VON STUEBEN,
THE UIC PAVILION CAN BE A DIFFICULT PLACE TO SHOOT THE
BALL, SO STAY TUNED, GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE COACHES!
THE CPS PLAY-OFFS ARE VERY INTENSE, THE TEAM THAT FOCUSES
THE MOST THE NEXT TWO WEEKS WILL WIN IT ALL!
WHITNEY YOUNG IS BATTLE TESTED, WILL SIMEON PULL THE
RABBIT OUT OF THE HAT, IS CVCA FOR REAL, WHAT ABOUT
FOREMAN, MARSHALL, AND STATE CHAMPS NORTH LAWNDALE,
WHAT TEAMS WILL TAKE SOMETHING FROM THIS TOURNEY AND
CARRY IT OVER TO THE IHSA PLAY-OFFS, THAT IS THE BIG
QUESTION?
HOW MANY TEAMS WILL THE CPS HAVE IN PEORIA?
IS THERE A CPS TEAM IN CLASS 2A THAT CAN PLAY WITH
SETON ACADEMY?
WILL NORTH LAWNDALE GO DOWNSTATE FOR THE THIRD STRAIGHT
YEAR?
IS THIS THE LAST HURRAH FOR WHITNEY YOUNG?

I THINK THE SEMIS WILL BE NORTH LAWNDALE AND YOUNG WITH FOREMAN AND THE WINNER BETWEEN MARSHALL AND HYDE PARK. U MIGHT NOT AGREE BUT YOUR CITY FINALE WILL BE NORTH LAWNDALE AND HYDE PARK BET ANY MONEY FELLS THOSE TWO WILL BE IN THE CITY FINALES. SMITH OF MARSHALL CANNOT DO IT ALONE AND YOUNG CANT HANDLE NORTH LAWDALE TOO MANY SCORES AND THEY HUSTLE. YOUNG IS ALL BOUT SUPERSTARS THE DONT PLAY AS A TEAM. THE LOOK FOR JORDAN OR COLVIN ALL THE TIME CAN THE OTHERS SHOOT THE BALL.BUT DONT BE SHOCK IN THE SECONG ROUND IF SIMEON GETS PAST CVS AND THEN PAST YOUNG. CVS HAS TO SHOW ME THE CAN DO IT TWICE JUST LIKE KOBS BEAT BOSTON LAST NIGHT SHOW ME CVS I THINK U CANT. ALSO LOOK FOR COACH CARTER TO BE GOING HOME LOL. THE CANT REACH THE FINALS IT ALL HAVE HAD A GOOD CHANCE SINCE 2006 WHEN SIMMONS(NOW AT OHIO STATE) WAS RUNNING THE SHOW IF U DONT AGREE LET ME NOW

CVS IS MY PREDICTION FOR CITY CHAMPIONS. THEY WILL BEAT SIMEON, WHITNEY YOUNG, NORTH LAWNDALE, AND THEN FOREMAN , OR HYDE PARK OR MAYBE MARSHALL FOR THE CITY CHAMPIONSHIP. OPEN YOUR EYES

THE CITY CHAMPIONSHIP WILL GO THROUGH SIMEON, THEY WERE
VERY IMPRESSIVE SATURDAY NIGHT AGAINST WEST AURORA!
I HOPE EVERYONE IS PAYING ATTENTION, COACH SMITH SCHEDULES
HIS GAMES SO HIS TEAM WILL PEAK AT THE RIGHT TIME, HE
PLAYS WEST AURORA, AND THEN IT'S RIGHT BACK INTO THE CPS
PLAY-OFFS, HIS TEAM IS BATTLE-TESTED AND READY TO GO!
ON THE OTHER HAND WHITNEY YOUNG GOES BACK INTO THE PLAY-
OFFS, COMING OFF A LOSS TO A CALIFORNIA TEAM, BOTH THESE
TEAMS STILL ARE SHOWING OTHERS, IF YOU WANT TO BE A TOP
TEAM YOU MUST SCHEDULE, JUST LIKE THEY ARE DOING!
YOUNG PLAYS CRANE NEXT, WILL CRANE PULL THE RABBIT OUT OF
THE HAT? STAY TUNED!

I understand everyones personal picks.Just because their hearts lean with teams they have some form of contact with. But to put one team down, just because you have some personal hurt with them is totaly worng! The playoffs is played in high school for the pure level of youth!Never knowing what can happen! No matter what great mind ,you think is coaching!Or top players are playing. It was proven last year with Curie vs.Whitney Young playoff game!Just watch which team show us all the prue level of the unknown again this time around!

Yes,yes, yes! It's CPS playoff time! Secound round match ups are like thrid round games. Which will make all these games hot pits for the home teams to host! The true basketball junkie will love to be at any one of these secound round games ! Just to see which one of the road teams pull off the so call upset, and how! And you cat bet there will be a overtime game. If not more then one . Let the games be played !

How does it feels to be a phoenix flyin' high into the sky how does it feelb to be Hyde park we dont know we dont scoop that low.... Yall already know what it is North Lawndale Taken City with out a word so hyde park step ya game up cuz we taken it all...
