On Friday, February 23 the Illinois Senate passed SB 13 which places the Expanded Homestead Exemption at $60,000; assures seniors that they do not need to reapply for the senior exemption each year; and creates a Returning Veteran's exemption.

Representative Lou Lang has been assigned as Chief Sponsor in the House, and yesterday Speaker Michael Madigan placed himself as Alternate Chief Co-Sponsor.

Also, on March 1 this bill was moved into the Revenue Committee.

On Tuesday, March 6, the Democratic Caucus will be holding a meeting at 10:30am in Springfield (Room 114) and Cook County Assessor James Houlihan has been invited to speak to the caucus on the 7% legislation.

We are hearing that the leadership is coming to understand that the current $20,000 "cap on the cap" may no longer be enough to give significant relief - and we are looking for an increase along the lines of the $60,000 contained in SB 13.

For more information on the bill, go to ilga.gov and type in SB13 in the search box.
