Patriots will roll

Underdogs are often sexy picks. It's fun to go against conventional wisdom and go with a hunch. But if you're putting money on the Super Bowl, be careful.

NFL picks: championship week

BY RICKY O'DONNELL

Kind of an anticlimatic championship week, no? But while everyone wanted to see Colts/Pats and Packers/Cowboys this week, we may be left with two even more interesting matchups.

Since both these games are on Sunday, I’ll just leave this post up until I check in on Monday. I finished an unimpressive 2-2 last week, and I think these games could be even more difficult to choose in this round. To the games…

Sunday NFL picks

BY RICKY O'DONNELL

Not a bad way to kickoff what many consider to be the NFL’s best weekend, huh? We had two pretty exciting games on Saturday, and in both the favorites were able to hold on and advance. Lambeau Field never seemed to never live up to the ‘frozen tundra’ moniker as well as it did yesterday, and the game was just as wacky as the weather. Those oh-so-overachieving Packers found a way to overcome Ryan Grant fumbles on their first two possessions of the game, and rallied back to victory behind….Ryan Grant, who ran for over 200 yards. Seattle just looked hapless at times, clearly a team that only went as far as it did because of a poor division. But throw a real running back on that club next year, maybe someone like Illinois’ Rashard Mendenhall, who could be available in the mid-20s for the Seahawks first pick, and that team may be able to contend next season.

The Patriots rolled as expected, though the Jaguars sure are tough. Is David Garrard, who I felt played magnificently, one of the leagues ten best quarterbacks? More importantly, why can’t the Bears ever find someone like Garrard, a former fourth round draft pick out of East Carolina?

I went 1-1 against the spread on Saturday, and today features, in my opinion, the two toughest games to pick of the weekend. To the spreads…

Dallas Cowboys (-7.5) over New York Giants

A lot of people like the Giants this week with TO being dinged up and Eli Manning never playing better. Personally, I’m rooting for the Giants in hopes of Eli celebrating a playoff win by heading to his favorite karaoke bar, but, alas, I don’t think it will happen. I always get nervous when everyone goes with the same Upset Special (never a good sign), and I expect a big game from Romo. Speaking of Romo, we learned yesterday that new girlfriend Jessica Simpson likes to sleep in his practice jerseys at night and even refuses to wash one of them. That’s, uh, kind of weird.

San Diego Chargers (+10.5) over Indianapolis Colts

Antonio Gates not playing in this game raised the line a couple of points, which is fine by me. Receivers Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers still give Phillip Rivers two underrated and reliable targets to pass to. More then anything, the Chargers have just been clicking on all cylinders lately after starting the season in a funk. Winners of 11 of their last 12 games, San Diego is peaking at playoff time, which is always a good sign. I might pick the Chargers if this line was a touchdown lower, and I really think they could win straight up. If it happens, expect a big day from cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who led the NFL this year with 10 interceptions and is a standout on special teams.

Saturday NFL picks

BY RICKY O'DONNELL

Green Bay Packers (-7.5) over Seattle Seahawks

This game will be built up as a Favre vs. his former mentor Mike Holmgren, but whenever these two teams hookup, I can only think of one thing: “We want the ball and we’re gonna score.” Matt Hasselbeck returns to the scene of the crime for his first postseason appearance in Green Bay since uttering those famous words, and has quietly put together an awfully impressive season. Hasselbeck has been so good, in fact, that if Shaun Alexander hadn’t morphed into a poor man’s Anthony ‘the A-Train’ Thomas this season, it’d be enough for me to go with Seattle. ESPN’s Bill Simmons may have summed up Alexander best:

To poor Shaun Alexander, who caused me to write in my notebook, "How small would a tackler have to be for Alexander to break his tackle? 140 pounds? 150 pounds? POSSIBLE ESPN REALITY SHOW!"

I’m sorry, but if you can’t run the ball, you aren’t going to win a playoff game in Green Bay. It’s that simple.

New England Patriots (-13) over Jacksonville Jaguars

The Patriots are going to win the Super Bowl. If you’ve watched football this year, you probably already knew that. I expect that Pats to win two blowouts, and have one really close game on their path to 19-0, so the trick will be to figure out who matches up best with them. Unfortunately, I don’t think that team is the Jags. Even if Jacksonville did have a chance, they certainly don’t anymore after Paul Spicer’s comments, and whole website-asterisk fiasco. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a complete beat down (remember what happened after Pittsburgh’s Anthony Smith talked smack) as New England gears up for a tougher road ahead.

Brett Favre already has stayed too long

THIS ORIGINALLY WAS POSTED ON JAN. 31, 2006. A FEW READERS HAVE REMINDED ME OF IT RECENTLY, SO I'M HUMBLY REPOSTING IT: I gave my esteemed colleague Elliott Harris a little grief the other day for writing that if Brett Favre does retire, the Bears better hope he doesn't run on the field in street clothes and beat them. My point led to a debate that's raging hotter than the buzz for the Super Bowl.

Someone should tell Donovan to talk to Rex

Donovan McNabb said on Real Sports that black quarterbacks are criticized more than white quarterbacks. Wonder what Rex would say about that.

Vick pleads guilty

So Michael Vick is going to jail. I don't think anyone doesn't believe that. It's just a matter of the length of his prison term. Should he ever play again?

Is Vick new face of NFL's lawless image?

This isn't Tank Johnson or Pacman Jones. This is a superstar, and what he did - if the indictment proves accurate - should put him behind bars and forfeit his NFL career.

Ditka vs. NFLPA

Who do you side with? Do you care? Some believe that since former players still made more money than the average worker, they should be able to fend for themselves. But considering the NFL is a multi-billion-dollar industry, it's a crime so many ex players - crippled by the game - are living in abject poverty.

A race to hire

You have got to be kidding me! I don't like to jump on the PC bandwagon and cry racism every time a white male is hired, but when John Shoop gets an interview for an NFL head coaching job, it's time to speak up.
