Chalk it up

I'm excited that for the first time all four No. 1 seeds advanced to the Final Four, and there is some hometown pride in two of the teams being led by Chicago-area guards.

Friday Sweet 16 preview

BY RICKY O'DONNELL

UPDATE: Uh, I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but I just went 8-8 on Sweet 16 games. Worth noting. Sometimes you have to take solace in these things when you pick Duke to go to the Final Four....

(10) Davidson v. (3) Wisconsin

How awesome is Stephen Curry? He’ll probably be like Jannero Pargo in the pros, but Curry really may be one of the ten best college players in the country. If Wisconsin can’t shut him down, no one can. Unfortunately Davidson’s greatest strength- random, explosive scoring outbursts from Curry, where he’s money from 35 feet in- is also their greatest weakness. What if he can’t get hot, like he did in the second half against Georgetown? Hopefully this game is at least closer than the last style clash game in the Sweet 16, UNC and Wazzu.

The pick: Davidson

Thursday Sweet 16 preview

BY RICKY O'DONNELL

(3) Xavier v. (7) West Virginia

Even though they’re the lower seed, no one would be surprised to see West Virginia get past Xavier and advance to the Elite 8. In fact, the Mountaineers are favored by one point. Having the better coach (Bob Huggins) and the best player (Joe Alexander) will make that happen. West Virginia also draws the public's affection for knocking off Duke last round, which makes just about everyone happy besides for those who went to Glenbrook North, like Duke sophomore gunner Jon Scheyer. Still, don’t write off Sean Miller’s Xavier squad just because you’re looking to pick an upset (not that this would be one anyway). Drew Lavender is the quintessential college floor general and forward Josh Duncan can fill up the box score.

The pick: Xavier

Full Court Press March Madness pool

By Ricky O'Donnell

Greetings, friends. As you may have heard, sports most glorious event, the NCAA Tournament, is upon us. Roman and I decided that this would be a good chance to start a public pool. We'll be doing it through Yahoo, so you need to register for a Yahoo ID/email if you don't have one already. It can be done rather easily by heading to the Yahoo homepage and clicking the Free Mail: Sign Up button. If anyone is having trouble, I'd be glad to help.

Once you register, just click here. You can sign up now and then fill out your bracket when the matchups are released on Sunday.

To the winner goes the opportunity to run the blog for a day. We'll figure out how it'll go down later (besides, I'm gonna smoke you clowns anyways), but we'd like everyone to sign up, if you want.

If you have any questions, just list them below.

Later this week: Full Court Press Fantasy Baseball. That will also be through Yahoo.

Is Derrick Rose the nation's best player?

At least one Web site - nbadraft.net - projects former Simeon star and Memphis freshman Derrick Rose as the No. 1 pick in next year's NBA Draft.
