Closing thoughts on Opening Day

The Cubs game was a wash. The positive of Fukudome offset the negative of Kerry Wood. Those were the main elements. The Sox game was a letdown, despite the postgame comments.

What's your overriding emotion?

Ok, Cubs and Sox fans, your teams lost today, but not all was bleak. What do you take away from today?

Prediction time

I'll take the Cubs winning their division with 87 wins and the Sox being better than expected with 83 wins.

Anybody looking forward to this hearing? I am, but I'm a trial junkie.

Roger Clemens got off easy with Mike Wallace. Swear.

Did Mike Wallace really ask Roger Clemens to "swear" that he never took steroids? Why not "Cross your heart and hope to die"?

Your thoughts on the Mitchell report

As a media type, I have to say the report did not live up to the hype. I mean, Jim Parque?

Bonds is indicted, are you surprised?

Most people who follow the legal system were shocked when news spread that Barry Bonds has been indicted, figuring if the feds hadn't made their case by now, they would more than likely give up.

Which is better deal: Z's or Dye's?

I'm glad Zambrano got the money, but I'm not sure it was a smart business move for the Cubs. History suggests injury will paint the contract in a negative light. But the Cubs have just one goal: Win this year. And if this makes Z happy and affects his pitching, it will be worth it. We'll get a glimpse tonight. As far as Dye, it proves the Sox aren't going young and will try to tweak their way back to being a contender next season.

Pods to the Cubs?

The Cubs reportedly claimed Scott Podsednik off waivers, but that doesn't mean a deal is going to get done. How much would that help the Cubs? Memories of Kenny Lofton? It's interesting, if nothing else.

New home run king

Ok, so Barry Bonds has the record. And the sun still rose this morning. I'm glad it's over, because the more I thought about the situation, the more troubled I got.

Soriano out; Sox show a pulse

Interesting day for Chicago's baseball teams. The Sox, who are 7-3 in their last 10, finish off a sweep of Detroit and the Cubs' playoff chances took a huge hit with Alfonso Soriano's strained his right quad and is out 2-4 weeks.

Any Bonds fans out there?

He's about to break the record. Would you go to Wrigley if he comes to town one shy of Hank? Would you cheer or jeer?

Frank to the Hall?

Did Big Hurt cement his Hall credentials today with No. 500? I think he's a lock for Cooperstown.

Give me your 4 most disappointing players on both ends of town

I'm putting together a list for Sunday's paper. My four most disappointing players are: 1. Zambrano. 2. MacDougal. 3. Eyre. 4. Konerko. Dishonorable mention: Soriano, Pods, Barrett. What do you think? I can be convinced to change before it goes in the paper.

No relief for this city

Scot Eyre finally surfaces and is torched; Angel Guzman walks two batters in the 11th and Carlos Marmol loses on a hit batter. Meanwhile on the South Side, Andrew Sisco and Mike MacDougal have Ozzie Guillen looking to Charlotte for answers. Why can't this city get a decent set-up man or middle reliever?

Who are you more worried about, Lou or Ozzie?

Or maybe you're not worried about either. Maybe Lou's flip-flop on Ryan Dempster as a starter doesn't signify a major lack of confidence in his closer. And what of Ozzie's outburst on Mike North's show? More passion, or desperation? How do you guys see it?

Cubs, Sox shakeups

Ozzie's talking about flip-flopping Erstad and Tads in the lineup? What do you think Sox fans, and what moves would you make? Same with you Cubs fans, Piniella's also talking about tweaking the lineup, what are your changes?

Baseball Prospectus predictions (don't look, Sox fans)

Baseball Prospectus, which is a fairly respected publication, is predicting the Cubs to win their division and the Sox to finish fourth.

Hendry stays hot, Williams stays aggressive

At the Cubs news conference introducing Alfonso Soriano to the local media last week, Jim Hendry tugged on my coat and said "Down in front.'' But it's going to take more than someone standing in front of Hendry to put him in the back
