Surprise, surprise: Orton, Favre out of this world

kyleorton.JPG

Kyle Orton guided the Broncos to another upset victory Monday night at San Diego.

It's the last thing we would have expected coming out of the preseason: Kyle Orton, who was error-prone and injured while the Broncos were losing all four of their exhibition games, is playing like a Pro Bowl quarterback for a Denver team that is 6-0 after Monday's convincing 34-23 victory at San Diego.

Meanwhile, in Minnesota, 40-year-old Brett Favre has found the fountain of youth in leading the Vikings to a 6-0 start. Despite first declining to come of retirement and then, after changing his mind once again, barely breaking a sweat in the preseason, Favre is flashing his gun-slinging style, rallying Minnesota to yet another come-from-behind victory Sunday over Baltimore.

Orton and the Broncos. Favre and the Vikings. Who has been the NFL's biggest surprise so far this season? Here's my top-5 list:

No. 5 Surprise: The New Orleans Saints, like the Broncos and Vikings, are unbeaten (5-0) after Sunday's impressive 48-27 thumping of the talented and previously unbeaten New York Giants. Drew Brees has been magnificent in the Saints' diversified offense (seven different players scored TDs vs. the Giants).

No. 4 Surprise: The perennially awful Cincinnati Bengals are 4-2 despite losing at home Sunday to the Texans, and they will present problems for the Bears' defense this weekend. Quarterback Carson Palmer is healthy again and dangerous, whether he's throwing to Chad Ochocinco or handing off to former Bears bust Cedric Benson. If not for a fluke tipped pass that cost them a victory in their season opener vs. Denver, the Bengals -- who boast impressive wins over Green Bay and Pittsburgh -- would be 5-1.

No. 3 Surprise: How could Jeff Fisher's Tennessee Titans possibly be this horrendous? A year ago, the Titans were 13-3 and the top seed in the AFC playoffs. Now they're an unthinkable 0-6 after Sunday's humiliating 59-0 loss in the snow at New England. Sure, they lost Albert Haynesworth to free agency and were missing both starting cornerbacks against the Patriots, but there's still no excuse for them to be this dreadful.

No. 2 Surprise: OK, it's no shocker that Favre has been a boost to the Vikings, but no one could have foreseen that he'd be this effective. Most figured he would need a little time to shake off the rust and get acclimated with his new teammates. For Minnesota to be 6-0, with Favre seemingly getting sharper every week, surely exceeds the expectations of even the most optimistic Vikings fan.

No. 1 Surprise: I'm a Jay Cutler fan, and nothing Orton does in Denver will convince me that the Bears made a bad deal. Cutler has been carrying a flawed Bears offense and will make his new team a Super Bowl contender for years to come. But, stunningly, it's looking like you can say the same about Orton in Denver. Give the Broncos' resurgent defense most of the credit for their unbelievable start, but tip your cap to the Bears' QB castoff for doing everything right directing an efficient offense. Orton and the Broncos get the nod as the NFL's biggest surprise.

So what's your call? How surprised are you by what Orton and Favre have done for their teams? And has Cutler been pretty much what you expected so far, or have you been pleasantly (or unpleasantly) surprised?

No surprise at all about Kyle, Cutler and/or Favre. With each of these 3 QB's, it's really about the players that surround them and guess what, Kyle and Brett's respective offensive lines are among the best in all of the NFL. It's amazing how time and time again, the O-Line gets no respect at all when giving credit to an offense. I saw some of the Denver and San Diego game earlier tonight and did you see how much time Kyle gets to throw in this offense? That O-line is a wall of pass protection. So for me, call it what you want, coaching, the GM, whatever, but it all starts in the trenches on both sides of the ball, the offensive line and the defensive line. The Bears need to improve in those areas the most. If that's Angelo's responsiblity, so be it. If it's Lovie's probelm to fix, so be it. If it's Ron Turner, ok then. If Marinelli, fine. I don't care who's ultimately to blame, but the O-Line and the D-Line both have to improve, period.

It's TERRIFIC for the NFL to see Favre back and playing as well (it seems) as he ever did. As for Orton, good for him. Much maligned in Chicago, now thriving in a new system that seems to really suit him. Broncos, Saints, Vikings, Bengals.....new blood. I love it!

Denver has quite possibly the best pass blocking O line I've ever seen...

Stu..you would be 6-0 with Denver's O Line in front of you or AD behind you.

Please....talk about wheels coming off the fruit cart...both of these teams are in for a rude awakening.

You have to admit Stu that the whole Orton-Cutler-Chicago-Denver thing is becoming this strange tragic comedy so far.

Denver, luck or not, is 6 AND FRICKEN' 0! With Kyle Orton of all people! You think he goes to his home and Denver, opens his window, and just screams out, "You got what you asked for Chicago!" "You could have had me, the great neck-bearded one but you traded me away!" While a sad jay Cutler, perhaps sobering up from a long night of drinking post Atlanta loss, opens the morning paper or sports web site and sees his Bears record, checks Denver's record, and just exhales,"You got to be kidding me."

It's kind of surreal. I have seen all of Orton's games with the Bears, so I know what he is capable of. I believe he went 10-1 to start a season with the Bears at one point, but when that O-line isn't dominating the line of scrimmage, when your big time receivers aren't getting open or making unbelievable catches, who do you want in the backfield in November making the big time throws? Do you believe Orton can gun that 20 yard out pattern in a swirling wind? Of the two, there is still no doubt that Jay was the right choice for the Bears. it may not seem so now, but you have to be patient.

umm..."super bowl contender's for years to come". Ok koolaide Whatever. So far the Patriots, Cowboys, Chargers, Bengals, Browns and Raiders have had the rude awakening.

Stu - I am on record as saying I never thought Orton was a bad QB AND that the Bears should have picked up Farve. But our line would have retired Farve. Farve is in the ideal situation and he is going to the Superbowl unless the Saints have something to say about that. I am not mad at him. Denver is going to get chewed up in the playoffs by the Colts or the Patriots. Thanks for tipping your hat Stu. We need to apologize to all ex-Bears who played in our offense. Line terrible and so is the play caller. I listened to that idiot Boers on the score yesterday defending Turner. You simply cannot argue with RESULTS. I watch players that leave here to see if its US or THEM. ITS DEFINITELY US.

If Cutler wasn't as good as advertised - HITMAN would be spot on with his assessment of the Bears. Sunday was a kick in the stomach and was extremely revealing. The Bears are pretenders. They came out of the bye and looked unprepared like they were resting on their laurels. You don't get in the red zone that many times and not score. But the most revealing thing was the no-huddle adjustment at halftime that completely exposed the defense. Its going to be scouted and used to neutralize our defense. Bears dominated the first half and came away with 7 points. Pure ineptitude. Especially when you have ONE offensive weapon that is not broken. KNOW THYSELF BEARS and PASS the ball its called PLAY ACTION. Forte sold out, either because he is hurt or just an average back. I think he is hurt. Now all of a sudden he's gotten Benson disease. But Benson has a cure for his disease! All the way to the #1 spot on the charts this week. I think the Bears are going to lose on Sunday.

Awwwwww, poor ol' culzie wants to take his toys and play elsewhere.

Thing is Cutler DID have that o-line in front of him, but because he is a childish boor he couldn't stand the thought of a little competition and asked to be traded.

His wish was granted.

So Culze, sit down and STFU

And from the archives...

I played Golf with two Bronco Die Hards yesterday. CLASSIC. They were so pissed about the trade, and they want to trade back.
We all had a good laugh about Orton's left handed jump pass that coulda been picked off by 3 different guys. Although, I sensed my laughter was more of a Warrior King who just burned done the village, and theirs was more of a Whimpering laugh of a guy who was facing the firing squad and found it a bit ironic that they were given a last cigarette to enjoy.
Eitherway....you have to laugh at the trade of the centur..er...scratch that...Trade of the EON!
BEst part about the Bears game was when Cutler watched Eli, call an audible from the line in his first possession and then didnt get the first down...and Jay...then on his first possession countered with an audible of his own, and kept the drive alive.
What a stud!

Don't look now, Culzie, but the "trade of the EON!" looks to be favoring Denver.

PS I love the Broncos throw-back uniforms!!! They are so ugly, they look good!

The Cutler - Orton trade is interesting because of insights it offers to the pro game.

1) O-Lines Matter - Denver's O-Line, like most O-Lines, are not given the weighting that their contribution makes to the success or failure of an NFL team. Denver's O-Line was notorious for its zone blocking schemes, athleticism and intelligence that could turn anyone into a 1,000 yard RB. Now they've installed an entirely new blocking system in the Amoeba Offense and Orton doesn't get pressured and the RBs are cranking out solid YPC. Ryan Clady is the best LT in the NFL. So, the line that made (fill in a name) a 1,000 yard rusher, now makes Orton a 100.0+ rated QB.

2) QB IQ > Arm - McD got a NFL HC gig at 33 because of his skill with QBs. He didn't dig Cutler. That doesn't mean that Cutler can't win and be successful in another system, he just wasn't McD's kind of guy. Cutler is a Farve. Orton is a Brady.

3) Conditioning matters - All teams in all sports should take advantage of their home field advantages. The BoSox have the Wall, the Dodgers have a Pitcher's park, the Bears have late season Cold. Denver has elevation - one mile of it. My hometown is filled with Olympians training there in a multitude of sports because of the conditioning advantage they get. Ditto the Broncos. Denver's history of playing at home is no statistical fluke it has causality. McD knows it and made conditioning the reason for D's 2H domination of people - home and away. Orton is handing the ball of to an offense that it out conditioning tired Ds. Everything opens from there. Orton's 2nd half rating against SD = 143.

4) It may be that Cutler in a ball control, strong D, cold weather game is the right guy for Chi-Town ala Farve in GB. When you need a gun at the end you have the weapon. High risk - high return potential. Cutler can put up points fast if you need them late.

Maybe it was a win - win trade?

Go Favre, go Vikings!

Love 'em both.

LOL... Culzie sounds a little bitter... While you're still sitting, pouting, and waiting for the Broncos to implode, I'll be enjoying the rest of the AMAZING season. I'm sorry whatever losing team you must be a bitter fan of most likely won't make the playoffs. Sucks for you! :)

Favre...HOF'r on a mission...nuff said

Surprised about Kyle Orton?...lmao...this is what I've said since Orton's rookie year.....recap...he woulda been a first rounder if he didn't go back for his Senior season...he was 10-5 as a starter his rookie year when he didn't know the playbook but could recite the words on the label of a bottle of Jack...and then gets replaced against Atlanta?...and doesn't get his second full year?...So Rex could get his "first" full year in after what? 5 years?

Orton is a pro bowl QB...and the Bears should have at least 2 titles with him...I can put Kyle Orton, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning in the same sentence...same type of QB...calm, cool, collected LEADER "with pocket insticts" ...and dabears... got a strong armed cheerleader who can run out of the pocket...what the frick ever

Angelo has destroyed the Bears....

I think we're down to a bunch of bad, broken down free agents and no draft picks....AWESOME!!...we're the Redskins!!...Jason Campbell and Jay Cutler have identical numbers, btw...in case you want to pump your fist for Jay...son cambell?

Orton's better...I told you so and deal with it...honestly, it's not even close...as the numbers dictate..a big arm does not a QB make....

and just how badly would Denver beat the Bears this year?...lmao...badly...

Chicago a top 5 team?....LOL, and Denver's getting a top ten draft pick?...new math, Culzie?....I'm in tears....now, get in the Limo and snap that picture like a good boy....

and if you're wondering if I'm enjoying this....immensely

Hey Stu, could you look up how many teams have gone to a Superbowl with a top ten draft pick the following year?....and if that doesn't get Angelo fired...

lmao, and people ask me why I wear the "C" on my hats facing the back or inside out nowadays...and boy, they aren't ready for nor do they like my answer...

BUT I'M RIGHT

Good head coaching and good drafting by the GM lead to a 6-0 start.....who knew?

Yet another Bear player flourishing after they escape from the mess that Lovie and Angelo have created.

Maybe the lack of those traits explains the current Bears performance?

But not to most who post here, they think if only we fire Ron Turner all we be well.

Kind of hard to call plays when your offensive linemen are on their backs and the QB has two seconds to throw a pass.

Kind of hard to call a play action pass when the defense knows you can't run the ball.

Kind of hard to throw a screen or slant when a 6'4" defensive end is a foot away from the QB right after the snap.

Angelo will probably hire Zorn after he is fired from Washington....

Not surprised. Angelo never gave Orton a chance.

First, he pushed him aside every time Rex-Honey came off of one of his many injuries.

Then, when Rex-Honey FINALLY was given a pink slip and Orton started doing things, Angelo kept threatening to find a replacement.

Glad Orton's gone from Angelo's Clown College. He deserved a fair shake and wasn't getting it here.

Thanks for your kind comments on Brett! I am amazed at some of the negative press that he gets. I think there is a lot of jealousy due to the amount of coverage he receives. I have watched him play for 18 years (missed Atlanta) and he seems more at peace in MN than I have seen before. The dome is perfect for him now, and the win over GB may have helped him get over his treatment by Thompson. I think Ted had to make a decision for the future of the Pack, but he treated Favre like dirt. As a Pack stockholder, I will not step foot in Lambeau as long as Thompson is the GM. My only worry is that Brett cannot last the season, but hopefully Childress will be monitoring that better than the Jets did. Brett is the most exciting player to watch! No wonder he gets record ratings. Go Vikes!

and Kieth...I assessed the bears...and Cutler is as advertised...especially in the Red Zone

Jay Cutler is to Red Zone Interceptions as Dave Craig was to QB fumbles...

NOT-A-WINNER....I've said this....and now you all get to live it

You people are insane... Orton a pro bowler..? yea right...!!! It's only been 6 games and most of them
have been lucky. Were not even in half the season an you all are praising the guy. Enjoy it while it last.

Stu, did you even receive my post on this topic from last night?
Stu responds: Edgar, sorry about that, thought it got posted but there must have been a glitch. Should be up now.

Anonymous --

Yes, we are all insane.

Yes, we are enjoying it while it lasts.

And here's something to munch on...

In 2008, the Broncos were 8-5 and needed to win only ONE of their three remaining games to get to the playoffs. 0-3 finish with Mr. Cutler at the helm.

In 2008, the Bears were 6-6 and needed to win FOUR in a row to get to the playoffs. Bears go 3-1 with Mr. Orton at the helm.

Wonder if that 0-3 finish by the Broncos raised any red flags with Josh McDaniels?

Orton is not always pretty -- never has been, but before you diss Orton, perhaps you should take a hard look at Cutler's career winning percentage. It is still below .500. I believe Orton's record is 27-12.

I believe in Orton. Always have.

Just win, baby.

Jerry angelo is a moron. It was obvious last year that the bears wouldnt have won 9 games last year without orton. If Orton didnt get his ankle twisted he would have gotten them into the playoffs at 10-6. Why angelo hated this guy is beyond me. Orton is a leader, he himself has said it many times even from his rookie year that he will not put the defence in a bad position and he wants to play complimentary football. If Joe Tiller purdue coach, hadnt been such a jackass as well Orton would have been drafted higher. There was rumors that Tiller was pissed off that Orton was being a candidate for Heisman and he wanted him to focus on Purdue who where ranked fifth in the nation till Orton got tackled by two defensiive linemen, fumbled in the last minute against wisconsin and got returned for touchdown to loose the game. From then on Tiller methodically took apart Orton leading him fourth round in the NFL. Even Ortons game in 2004 capital one bowl against Georgia was a masterpiece. He single handedly kept purdue in the game till they lost by a touch down 27-34 in the end. Is Purdue ever going to see a number 5 ranking into the sixth week again, probably not.

The point is Angelo doesent see potential all he is sees is a lousy rex grossman playing for spurrier and Florida and he falls in love with him. Cedric Bensons success in Cincinatti is another feather in Angelos cap.

Cutler sucks at playing defense. Orton is a much better defensive player than Cutler. Last year Denver was 29th in defense and now with Orton their first. Orton is way better at running back than Cutler. Orton is a better blocker and tackler too. Orton doesn't have to score as many points as Cutler because he's not a selfish crybaby prima dona. Orton is way tougher than Cutler. Orton calls better plays than Cutler.

Orton may be as good as Ditka!
If the Bears just ran more they'd get more yards. Don't let that selfish Cutler call the plays anymore.

Everyone should probably calm down a bit - Kyle Orton is a above average to good quarterback playing in a very controlled system under one of the greatest offensive play callers the NFL has seen with two great wideouts. Look at what Josh McD was able to do with the likes of Matt Cassel last year and a year removed from Josh and the Pats people are asking "who is Matt Cassel again?" The Broncos would be just as undefeated if Jay Cutler was back there carrying out McD's plays. Look at the schedules, the Broncos will lose three perhaps four of their next seven games (Steelers, Giants, Colts, and perhaps the Ravens/Chargers) and finish at a very respectable 12-4 or 11-5. To toot the Broncos horn you guys should look at who they have played....the Pats are the only real legitimate victory to show so far. Now you go to Jay Cutler, he's a gunslinger so you knew you were going to get the interceptions but also the big plays. He is also working with an offense that wasn't really written by a offensive guru but they are sitting at 3-2 with a very favorable schedule. He is a great young quarterback and this week as well as weeks and years to come will show that.

You may think that Chicago got a deal with Jay Cutler, but they also got a big baby. Hope they can deal with that. I'll take Kyle Orton any day.

Orton never got the opportunity to make the position his when he was in Chicago. Winning wasn't good enough for Angelo, who was determined to see his boy, Rex, succeed.

I too was excited when they drafted him, knowing that he came out of a good program in Purdue, and was in the Heisman conversation. If he had came out as a junior he would have been drafted ahead of Rex, but that senior year hurt him.

If the Bears don't catch fire, than I sincerely hope Orton takes the Broncos to the Super Bowl, and shoves it up Jerry's rectal duct on national television.

A big, "Howdaya like me now, Jerry?" would be great to hear as he holds up the Lombardi Trophy.

My other dream scenario, (provided that the Bears aren't in the playoff picture) is for Farve to do the same with Green Bay's GM.

I wonder how much Goodell would fine him for giving the finger to Thompson in front of a national audience?

omg - why does anyone engage in this cutler vs. orton nonsense. Obviously a good trade for both teams.

Different situations, teams, etc and judging a trade after 5 games is equally assinine.

nuff said...

Orton has the Broncos by the short and curlies.

He was shipped to them as a piece of merchandise in the final year of a paltry contract. He had nothing to say about the deal, but he'll sure have something to say about it at the end of the year if he keeps playing at this level.

They can franchise him for one or two years, but sooner or later they'll have to empty the piggy back if they want his signature on a long term contract.

Orton will be making the pro bowl is my bet. But it is because he is using his head more than his arm. Throwing away the ball when there is no play. Protect the team from turnovers and just aim for 5yards to march slow and steady down the field chewing up precious minutes for teams trying to compete with one of if not the best defense in the NFL. Go Broncos. I hope everyone keeps believing they are overated my boys always play the best as underdogs.

So here is the deal. Kyle is a winner. That it plain and simple. Call it what you want but if the Broncos were loosing games everyone would be pointing the finger at him just as they did in here in Chicago
The state don't lie. And Whitman hit it right on the nose.
Being handcuff by Turner for years never showcased Kyle's ability to show his sound decision making.
Now we here in Chicago are stuck to deal with Grossman 2.0.
Turner falls in lover with guys with big arms.
No one needs to throw fifty yard passes into the wind to win football games.
Just hit open receivers when they are open and don't force bad passes into double coverage.
I'm a few credits shy of my Offensive Coordinator degree, but it seems to me that Josh McDaniel is not.
And he is proving to a league of Favre lite lovers that decision making wins games.
Not arms.

Um... as a correction there, New Orleans is 5-0, not 6-0 as you said. They had a bye-week last week. I suppose after that blooper, the rest shouldn't surprise me too much.

As far as bad deals, Cutler has had more red zone INTs than any QB in the league over the last two years, to say nothing of his fumbles. Living in Seattle, I remember a guy named Dave Krieg. Definitely had a good arm, but with his little woman's hands, couldn't protect the ball worth squat. That's what you gave up two first-round picks and a solid QB for.

Cutler, Orton, Peyton Manning... pick any QB you want, with the Bears' offensive line, you're not going to have great success. Denver's line should prove that. Enjoy Cutler, and thanks for taking him.
Stu responds: Fixed; thanks for the catch.

Orton was winning before he got to Denver. He led the Bears to 9 wins last year with a worse receiving corps, defensive effort, and O-line than Cutler currently has.The Bears last year were 3-3 at this time coming off a loss to the FALCONS where Orton leads the team on a game winning drive like the one we wished jay couldve executed only to see it squandered by a bad coaching decision and a defensive breakdown.

We saw the signs in Orton last year so this shouldnt surprise anyone and now hes taken another step just as he has pretty much every year since he was drafted .

I like the Jay trade and think eventually he will do great things here but Orton is a stand up guy who is becoming a top QB in the league and deserves everything hes getting now.Its not luck and there is no need for us to knock Orton.

Hitman, I'll say this. A good preacher needs to bear fruit and you've certainly done that. You've got quite a little congregation going at the Church of Orton. It's growing by leaps and bounds. Amen Brotha!

I'm still not buyin' it. Call me a heretic. Call me agnostic. Call me an atheist. But, I'd still rather have Jay Cutler over Kyle Orton on any Sunday when people are going or have just come from church (not Sunday nights).

The lack of focus on the differences between the offensive lines on the teams in question defies logic let alone sound football sense. The game is principally won at the line of scrimmage. That's not me talking. That's been a football axiom for eons. A great line can make a decent quarterback into a very good quarterback and vice versa. The Denver Broncos have one. The Chicago Bears do not. Throw a running game into the mix and the defense has to be aware of anything. It's a little too simple to blame the Mile Highers three end-of-season losses on Cutler. It's just as too simple to credit Orton for their 6-0 record.

Oh, that's right, a blind faith is better than no faith at all. I've also noticed a lot of Denver fans on this blog. That's fine. I'm just saying "how predictable!" Keep that congregation agrowin' there Hitman.

Stu, you can call it surprises with Denver and Minny, or you can call it what it really is; two luckier teams with better offensive lines and better coaching.

We came out ahead on the trade though, cause without Cutler our 'O' line would look much uglier, while I'm gonna say, in all honesty, the defensive line and it's schemes are much improved this year. We've played very well, considering the injuries and new starters on the 'D' side of the ball.

We could easily be 6-0, as well as 2-4, but at the same token both Minny and Denver could easily each be 4-2. There's a lot to the bounce, and so far it's gone their way, but I guarantee you, neither the Broncos or Vikings are any better the Bears.

We, in Chicago, have the better QB, and in the end, when all else is measured, may be the difference.

Go Bears!!!

Gig says "A great line can make a decent quarterback into a very good quarterback and vice versa." So, Gig (talking to himself), vice versa would read "A very good quarterback would make a great line." Hopefully, I spared the time and typing from an observant reader. My bad. Of course, I meant that a bad O-line could make a decent QB awful.

Incidentally, I do want to reiterate that I was one of the more supportive of Kyle while he was here. He's been a decent QB with a so-so line and a good-to-very good QB with an awesome line. Have O-line will travel--maybe to a Super Bowl and even a Pro Bowl!

Be careful a lot of you who whistled a completely different tune about both Cutler and Orton prior to the season. You guys may be windsocking....I hear the breezes blowing as I type.

Gig....Blind Faith is a Cubs fan ...ummm Rexx fans umm 'post the Arizona followed by the Miami games?' debacle...ummm big Fat out of shape Entitled High stupid quotin Cedric Benson fans?....you mfean that kind of blind faith?

no, loyalty is earned, my friend...think about this, lol, they pulled Kyle off of a Barstool his rookie year and put him behind Kruetz...he won 10 games...he needed to sober up and did...friggin Rex....Kyle could have been another Kenny friggin Stabler....partyin throwin TD's

get in the limo culzie

I'll say it again...it's Orton's pocket awareness....and he has a strong arm but it's more in the line drive laser rope sorta way....not the bomb like Rex could throw...the short to intermediate of the field and let the playmakers make the plays....and he gets that

and can make those throws

I don't buy the crap that Orton couldn't succeed with our O Line...He's a pocket passer and they are easier to block for....it's all about how you step up into it...and Kyle can...and again...fire a laser...and sorry you had to hear it like this....I figured yall saw it....I want my doggon Superbowl victories and my #18 Jersey thank you very little..

ehh, what do I know and TJ got 200+ ...in a loss... and Mike Brown isn't sucking although I love me some Afalava....and to all the x beears who force me to go to other teams websites....

this is gettin wordy...however

NE Way...we're gonna hang our hats on Jayson Campbell Cutler Farrah Fawcett Majors and we'll see won't we?

lol, they'll probably go to extend him and he'll say no

could Gaines Adams save Jerry's Job?

is Lovie going turn his back on the no huddle?

is Matt Forte really dating Cedric Benson behind Hester's back?

Find out next week on... Jump the Shark, Sunday, 3 central

Gig:

You hit the nail.

I was always an Orton fan, but nevertheless, I liked the Cutler trade from day one.

God bless Orton for thriving behind a first class offensive line, and a dominant defense. If he would have had those tools here in Chicago, Angelo never would have considered the trade to begin with.

I think that Cutler can make more out of the NOTHING that exists here than Kyle could have, and will suffer the consequences of coming to a team with fewer weapons and less protection around him.

This is all on Angelo, and I hope that both of these QB's thrive in spite of him.

OK..so I guess i should just trade in my Bears Pit Viper status for a throw back Broncos jersey like you and Hitman..huh Seedy?

Gimme a break...

Orton had a bazzillion chances to succeed here..and the facts ....i repeat...the FACTS are he couldnt. He couldnt even beat out Rex Grossman. What a joke. I watch him make those same throws behind recievers and at their ankles that he made here.

The only difference is...now he has 45 seconds per play to stand back there and decide which Piece of S throw he wants to whip out of his weak armed arsenal.

Dude is a total phony...and I would much rather watch Cutler...and win some lose some, than watch Orton and just pray for a first down all game. Like we have for the last however long.

as for Hitman being a preacher...

you all remember his hymnal about Rex and Ced?

yep..you nailed that one Hitman..Cedric Benson is some bust alright!

I like that there are actually other people out there who understand the importance of the offensive line. I figured that out during the Broncos' 39-9 run from 1996-98. Sure, Denver had John Elway. But they also had a 6th round pick at RB (Davis), an undrafted WR (Rod Smith), a journeyman WR cut by at least one team (McCaffrey), and a 7th-round TE (Sharpe). That line -- Gary Zimmerman, Tom Nalen, Mark Schlereth, Brian Habib and Tony Jones -- did what the current line is doing for Orton.

The evidence that the line turns skill positions into superstars is everywhere. Just look at the Chiefs. LJ turns from stud to spud after the line is disbanded. Take Cassel out of NE and put him behind that line and he looks like ... gasp, Orton the Bear or worse, Grossman.

Cutler has the tools, but he needs the protection if the Bears want a title.

I used to be a Huge Bears fan. Heck They practiced in my home town when I was a kid. I would watch them with my grandfather and listen to the games on the radio, (lol) talk about throwback. So when I hear about "THE TRADE" I was excited. We have some Kyle Orton autograph and I looked at the recievers and Oline for the Broncos and said now this boy will go. I have never been one for the big talk no walkplayers and old her after all these years I could not watch the bears this year with someone so cocky and nothing to show for it. I did watch the Green Bay game to give him a chance..... 4 int. I did watch Phillip Rivers and LT last night, fired up pacing the side lines waiting to get back into the game in the second half, ( two special teams touch downs can keep ones offense off the field as well) then sitting on the bench waiting to get back in the game. Thie offensive rythme GONE. Game Management wins football games not arms. Kyle Orton is not gods gift to football but I'll take his style of sportsmanship and hard work over the all talk and no walk of Mr Cutler ( Rivers missed Jay last evening). And by the way I'll be back when and if Cutler can lead a team better than McMann. He was a decent Bears Quarteback wasn't he?

Just think what Grossman would be doing now...if he went to Denver. Record after record. Sorry, you idiots just admitted that by'trying to show football knowledge' with offensive line garbage. Can you name any one on either O-line? Do YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A GOOD OLINE????? what skills,technique?....is your fantasy league success based on your OLines performance???? Do you losers even draft o lineman for fantasy football??? I don't know how it works. Not one single coach would take Orton over Cutler(including Mcdaniels...remember it wasn't his choice..it was Jay's)....regardless of the offensive line.
For future references...this is an era of three step drops....the O-line has very little to do with passing success..except for failing to pick up blitzes. Back in the era of seven step drops, the O-line was very significant in the passing game.
Today, the O-lines success is 75% based on their ability to run block. That is where the Bears O-line fails....simply because they went out and got a pass blocking-five step drop era- tackle. The Bears have abandoned the run game in an effort to develop the passing game. Just watch and enjoy(they have two great tackles)......don't look for our run game to get better any time soon.....but soon we will be a passing machine. The Bears are transforming...get over it and deal with it.
If the Bears were able to consistently execute like the Broncos.....they would absolutely wallop the Broncos, based on pure talent and coaching. Instead, many teams are struggling to consistently execute(that is because the NFL is changing-philosophies are changing), and the Broncos are getting by very cheaply.
The Vikings? Not even worth mentioning. Nothing special about them. Peterson is already worn down and we are only 25% through the season. Brett was all used up in the 49er's game. They are about to take an extra long bye 'week'.....maybe showing up in week 14 again.

If Orton makes the pro-bowl I will never watch the NFL again! Cutler is a better QB and anyone that says they would rather have Orton than Big Jay is lying. Come on Speedy they have only played 6 games so far.

Kyle Orton is a WINNER !
He has a career winning peercentage as a starter of 27-12. 69%
NOTE: Some of that time was with "the Bears" offense.

Jay Cutler is a whiner.
He has a career winning percentage as a starter of 20-21. 49%
NOTE: Some of that time was with "the Broncos" offense.

"Idiots?...Losers?...Football Fantasy Leagues?" Wrong...wrong...and...wrong

Stuck, you're a piece of work Mr. Sunshine. Wherever did you get your ever-pleasant and always respectful personality? Bill Belichek?

Ahhhh, now there's the Culzie we all know... and have fun with.

Culzie, you and Angelo were (and still are) the #1 and #2 fans on the "Rex is our Quarterback" bandwagon. The only reason Kyle didn't unseat Rex is he was a higher draft pick (and more expensive) and we know how Lovie and Angelo are with high draft picks to whom they pay a lot of money to underperform.

The facts are Kyle is a winner. Cutler someday may become one, but right now, his career record is below .500. His teams have never won 10 games in a season (or 9, either).

One last question to which Hitman and I want to know the answer: Are you polishing your 21s with that old Bears #8 jersey?

Hitman -- Do you know where I can buy a throwback Denver Broncos jersey - say the 1960-61 era? And how about a pair of those socks, too?

We stylin'!

Rob, do you know just how much damage you'd do to the networks if you stopped watching Football??......None at allllll

and Culzie...just as you fell in Love with Forte's Tulane highlite track meet reel....you've femnamored yourself to Benson's string of 14 games in his 5 year career...so fatboy got into shape, what's your point?...TJ put 210 yards up last weekend...and yes..Splitting Carriers....that concept seemed to elude you last time we had this convo

Enjoy your Jay....how lovely for you

LOL, wanna make a bet Orton gets more money from Denver?....and if he does, you get a T2J tattoo on your arm...and a #8 Broncos throwback jersey

Seedy, that's all I'm wearing right now are those socks....have some time to be on the computer, so I got my uniform on...

and a Grossman Jersey?..Me?..no..if you still have one....throw those on the Enis-Spellman pile; The Quinn-Hutchinson pile is too full...the guard at Halas Hall knows where they go....

and I only wear either my number or someone in the HOF if I"m gonna plunk down a testee for one NE Way

Hey anonymous, show yourself or stop stalking me. Please do not associate me with Belichek. Coward.

Orton will break the bank in Denver if he keeps this up.

He'll have Peyton, Eli, and Tom Teriffic all trying to rework their deals.

It was a mistake. I noticed it a millisecond too late as I pressed "submit." Thankfully, Stu apparently backtracked or something to located the one I tried to send subsequently and immediately.

what are you going to do if he doesnt get more money?

LOL...I'm sure you can come up with somthin, man....bettin tattoos is pretty funny, tho...I can guarantee it'll get me prayin Kyle doesn't get hurt..weell..a tattoo bet should have an injury providing clause in it

you shouldn't lose your job or have to get a tattoo just because ya got hurt or something like that..

I'm not going to, but if I lose, I could get a ...well, I'm not going to lose...you can bet if ya want, tho

T2J vs ?

You have to get a Tattoo of that picture of Benson Partying on the boat on your chest?

then I guess the other half of the bet is "the winner of the bet pays for the other guy's tattoo?"

Allow me to settle this for you:

The loser of the bet has to get a tattoo of himself wearing a pink lace teddy, being flogged by the winner, who's dressed in full dominatrix garb.

And I'll pop for the tattoo.

Win/Win!!!

Mark..sounds like you want to pay for, give and receive the tattoo...

this bet is getting way too creepy for me...

Nah. But the voyeur in me would like to watch.

As a broncos fan, I thought that the broncos were going to be terrible this year. I thought with a rookie coach and Cutler gone and a no named QB, that we were going to have a few years of rebuilding. How happily wrong I am.

Cutler is a good QB, but he has ADD or something and will lose focus and make bad desicions and throw interceptions.

Orton is very impressive. I have been watching all the games and all the interviews at denverbroncos.com Orton is an intelligent man, tough and makes great choices. His only interception so far this year was to randy moss on a hail mary play.

However, this game against the Ravens tomorrow is going to be the one true test. I think the Ravens defense is going to present a lot of problems for the broncos. If they can find away to beat the Ravens, they are going to the playoffs. Then the Steelers next week, the broncos have a hell of a schedule.

Another thing about the Cutler-Orton trade is that the Broncos got another first round pick next year, so hopefully the Bears do bad so we get a better pick. The broncos are going to look good for years to come.

The Bears should beat the Browns this week, and Im going to watch it, but if they don't, im guessing it will be Cutler's fault. I hope not though, I hope this trade works out for both teams.

I just wonder if McDaniels will keep Orton, or try to find another guy, but so far Orton has been a great leader. Thank you Chicago!
