Jake Peavy's debut with the Sox on Saturday is lacking the anticipated luster.
Good seats still available! Jake Peavy will make his long-awaited Sox debut Saturday against Kansas City, and it's a home game, so a huge gate at the Cell would fill the team's coffers. Trouble is, at this point, does anybody care anymore?
As Sox fans are painfully aware, Peavy was acquired at the trade deadline with an eye toward putting the South Siders over the top during a September pennant push. The Sox were neck-and-neck with the Tigers for first place in the AL Central at the time, but after Wednesday night's 4-1 loss at Seattle, they are mired 6.5 games back and all but out of the race.
So Peavy's start Saturday actually is more about the future. Some think Peavy should've just been shut down for the season after his Sox debut was delayed by a line drive off his pitching elbow during a late-August rehab start. But given that he finally is fully recovered from all his assorted ailments, it makes sense to get back on a major-league mound in a real game, so he can prove to himself that he is back in top physical form.
Yes, there won't be any pennant-race drama when Peavy takes the hill against the lowly Royals. But if he's on, the former Cy Young award winner could offer a tantalizing taste of what Sox fans have to look forward to next season. A rotation that features Peavy, Mark Buehrle, John Danks, Gavin Floyd and a rejuvenated Freddy Garcia would be the envy of most teams.
So, when Peavy toes the rubber Saturday evening at the Cell, will you be watching (either in person or on TV)? I plan to be in front of the TV, at least for part of the game, just to get a glimpse of Ken Williams' trade-deadline dream scenario: Jake Peavy, pitching in September for the Sox (not the Cubs), putting on a show .... oh, what might have been.
Yes
The only reason I wont be there is because I will be out of town at a prayer retreat and unable to watch the game.
Kenny spent and we should support the Sox. Say what you want about the Cubs - they spent money trying to provide loyal fans with a winning team. As long as its still possible to win the Central the fans should keep the faith. On both sides of town. You will have the entire summer to be disappointed, stick with your team and support them. Build some momentum going into next season if possible.
KLS?...Retreat and Pray?....I didn't hear about another Bears fan convention..
you should be learning to skate..
and no I'm not gonna watch baseball...
Probably not, but I wish him well and also wish the Cubs had gotten him. I suspect he will show both his talent and his character. The Sox are lucky to have him
On another note, I am becoming a Neil Hayes fan. His article in today's paper about a city of whiners is right on. Criticism should be directed to matters related to performance, and lord knows there were enough of those in last week's game.
I already have something else going on so no I won't see it.
The White Sox starters should be very good in 2010.
I hope they get the set up and long relief situation shored up before then.
Can we say '69 Mets, anyone?
Darn right I'll be watching! I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say, if Detroit loses 2nite and we win, the Chicago White Sox will overtake the Tigers and Twins for the Central.
Why? We miss Greinke for this weekend. Big.
The Twins will be sky high against Detroit for the remainder of the season but will NO LONGER have Chicagos' number.
Peavy overcomes all doubts and pitches strong the 'rested' rest of the way.
The White Sox win 5 of 6 left with Detroit and take the division on a 'GEM' by Floyd in the last game of the year.
Dye breaks his funk, Rios wakes up from his s'lumber, we save the best clutch hitting for late September and the pitching staff engages in a friendly war of attrition after watching Garcia, of all guys, excel.
Hey, Detroit has lost 6 of 9 and Morneau is out. It's not over, and the schedule, and numbers, say so.
I've seen stranger things happen. Hey, you had to take Romans' seat, didn't you?
Stu responds: Love the way you think, Anthony.
I like the way you're thinking too Anthony, but I think they have to win tonight. I'll do all I can to make sure that happens here in Seattle.
Stu responds: Gig, be sure to wave to us from your front-row seat.
GIG, I'm watching now and looking for you.........is that you in the black shirt with the neck beard, yawning?
What is with that damn train whistle?
I will be watching Peavy Saturday from Sect 159 row 10, wearing my sparkly new shirt.
And I'll have whatever Navarro's smoking.
Pray for me, Keith
Sox are now "officially" done. I'm also ready to see Bobby Jenks replaced unless he has some kind of personal epiphany and gets himself in shape. I have absolutely no time in my days to follow them the rest of this season even if they're mathematically alive and play the Tigers six times. This is "show me" time. If a miracle happens and they're within a legit striking distance, fine.
No, Bubba's Mom, I never had a neck beard. I can't even grow a face beard!
Stu responds: Yeah, Gig, this was the final nail .... they were one out away from creeping back with 5.5 games of the Tigers and Jenks totally blows it. But our Joe Cowley already is predicting the Sox will win the division in 2010 (after some Ken Williams fine-tuning).
While everyone has been bashing Linebrink, rightfully so he's stinking up the place, my beef all year has been with Jenks. This guy couldn't get a 1-2-3 inning if his DINNER depended on it. I DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT care for Jenks as our closer.
I had a strong feeling Detroit was going to lose, and I felt if we could get a win last night, and I believe the STARTING pitching odds were on us, we'd turn that corner. Well, we didn't turn that corner cause we ran out of gas trying to drive around our BIG FINISHER!
I'll certainly watch the game (on recorded TV/DVR), but no way will I judge him as a White Sox pitcher yet until next season. This should only be about getting him back into rhythm on the mound as long as both Peavy and the doctors are on the same page in making the start. I don't understand why so many writers were suggesting that the White Sox shut him down for the entire season and start over next year. This is more than just a physical issue, but it's also mental for Peavy. Besides, the injury wasn't even arm-related! But I'm sure Peavy will be on a very limited pitch count.
