Kellen Davis hangs on after a hit by James Farrior for a second-quarter TD catch.
What a difference a week makes! So much to like about the Bears' 17-14 victory Sunday over the reigning Super Bowl champion Steelers. Jay Cutler showed the poise that was lacking against Green Bay, avoiding the rush and making clutch completions. Johnny Knox, Greg Olsen and Kellen Davis provided Cutler with dependable targets. The defense, even without Brian Urlacher, was rock-solid again.
And Robbie Gould came through one more time, making the game-winning kick after two big misses by his Steelers counterpart Jeff Reed.
*Who impressed you the most? Who was your MVP in this game?
*Does this change your impression of Cutler (27-of-38, 236 yards, 2 TDs, no INT, 104.7 QB rating) after what you saw in Green Bay, or were you already convinced that his four picks vs. the Packers were an aberration?
*How good can Johnny Knox (six catches, 70 yards, 1 TD) become? Do you feel a lot better about the receiving corps after what you saw from Kellen Davis (five catches, 38 yards, 1 TD) and Greg Olsen (three catches, 41 yards)?
*Are you concerned about the inability to get a running game going vs. Pittsburgh? Matt Forte was limited to 29 yards on 13 carries, but he did catch five passes for 33.
*What was the key to the outstanding effort by the defense, keeping the Steelers' ground game in check and containing Ben Roethlisberger?
*What did you think of the game plan and Lovie Smith's coaching performance?
*The newly re-sodded Soldier Field turf seemed to be causing problems. Would you like to see FieldTurf installed?
*The Seahawks lost 23-10 at San Francisco. What's your early-line forecast for next Sunday's game at Seattle?
Sound off, everybody!
*Who impressed you the most? Who was your MVP in this game?"
The guy who impressed me the most was Johnny Knox, with an honorable mention to Kellen Davis. Cutler was the MVP however with an honorable mention to Robbie Gould.
*"Does this change your impression of Cutler (27-of-38, 236 yards, 2 TDs, no INT, 104.7 QB rating) after what you saw in Green Bay, or were you already convinced that his four picks vs. the Packers were an aberration?" T
This is what I expected from Cutler. Last week was an aberration.
*"How good can Johnny Knox (six catches, 70 yards, 1 TD) become? Do you feel a lot better about the receiving corps after what you saw from Kellen Davis (five catches, 38 yards, 1 TD) and Greg Olsen (three catches, 41 yards)?"
Johnny Knox needs to play. He multi-talented: moves, speed, hands. I wouldn't say I feel a lot better, but I do feel better.
*"Are you concerned about the inability to get a running game going vs. Pittsburgh? Matt Forte was limited to 29 yards on 13 carries, but he did catch five passes for 33."
I am concerned about the run blocking. Perhaps it will be better against a 4-3 defense.
*"What was the key to the outstanding effort by the defense, keeping the Steelers' ground game in check and containing Ben Roethlisberger?"
The Steelers really aren't a great running team anymore despite what you'd think. Nothing really stood out defensively. It was an all-around effort. I thought Charles Tillman looked good.
*"What did you think of the game plan and Lovie Smith's coaching performance?"
I think Lovie's doing a solid job calling defensive plays. With the run blocking being so poor, I'm not displeased with the offensive game plan. However, the 3rd and 13 draw play in the second half irked me a bit. Still, it didn't hurt after all.
*"The newly re-sodded Soldier Field turf seemed to be causing problems. Would you like to see FieldTurf installed?"
It would be sinful if the Chicago Bears would ever return to anything artificial. That would be wrong. On the other hand, there is no excuse for not having ready-to-play-on turf for Game 1 of an NFL season. That's bush-league! If it means that Bono can't sing at Soldier Field a week prior, then so be it.
*The Seahawks lost 23-10 at San Francisco. What's your early-line forecast for next Sunday's game at Seattle?"
The Bears will win in a close one, say, 24-21.
By the way, the Packers losing to the lowly Cincinnati Bengals shows me that they had nothing left after they played the Bears. In other words, I think they played over their heads.
That was a good win.
Starting 0-2 would have been bad.
They still dropped too many passes but Cutler was cool and he delivered. Olson blew a sure TD but Cutler did not let it bother him and that is what I like about him.
I love Knox. He looks like he can be a real threat in the league once he gets some experience under his belt.
The defense looked really good in the 2nd half. They were not getting to Roethlisberger in the fist half and it was killing them. I knew that if they could get to him then they could win this game.
That first drive by the Steelers was impressive and I was worried about that.
I did not like the way they went into a shell a couple of times when it was 14-7 but that is classic Lovie.
"Better to lose by 7 then maybe lose by 10"
With the defense doing a much better job of getting to the QB this year they can hide the soft spot on the D a little more.
I really want to see the running game put up some yards against the Seahawks next week.
Set up the play action.
Am a lifelong Bears fan. Also followed Denver and Cutler for many years (I live in Colorado). I listened to the game on WBBM. Was astounded to find out after the game that most people thought Cutler had a good game. The radio announcers took delight in criticizing him all night. They also gave more credit to the great offensive line, and our crack receiving corps. Special repeated mention was made that Cutler's helmet was knocked off by a referee.
When Cutler was cheered at the end of the last drive-the announcers stated, "The crowd is cheering as Jay Cutler is being taken out". Then they laughed when his helmet got knocked off. They actually discussed it.
I had to wait until Jay Hilgenberger came on to find out how well Cutler played. Listening to the announcers I thought Rothlisberger was cleaning Cutler's clock. I found out later that Cutler beat Rothlisberger in every category. There was no overall critique by the radio announcers except that Cutler didn't use his running game.??????!
This is one of the reasons he left Denver. His contract comes up again at the end of the year.
Stu, are you putting words into our mouths? Isn't that what Mary Mitchell is for?? "does this change your perception of cutler?"
Are you forgeting, it's your colleagues that flopped- not us?
* Johnny Knox did as expected. Cutler did as expected. Gould did as expected. It was weird to see a Bears team make Defensive adjustments in the first half(actually, any half)!! So Lovie is the MVP.
* Not concerned about running game...Forte is overrated( don't diss me, I know too much about football than to believe Forte is the answer)....he will
prove that against the hapless Seahawks run Defense. Is our Adrian
peterson on steriods? Seriously, I was watching the game with a
bunch of dejected Packer fans(they didn't believe me when I told them the Packers were not actually good, and would lose to the Bengals)...we all agreed, that he gained an unusually large amount of upper body mass in a rather short time.
* No field turf...all grass is slippery when it is wet....slips are for losers....did you hear Lovie? The "turf was not a problem".
* The Key was to wear down the Steelers O-line so that they were
too tired to hold, because obviously the refs weren't gonna call it
against the Steelers.
*Do you think Hassleback will play? No matter, Wallace is adequate...
Bears should Run, run,run all over Seahawks.
Bengals beat packers, who beat the bears, who beat the steelers.
is kind of embarrasing to be the Steelers now that Cincinnati is
better than them. HA! And they have to play them next week. HAhA!
So.....the Bears can't win without Urlacher, eh?
That was a gutsy win - they pulled together when they had to. That hit on Greg Olson was scary. I thought he was done, along with the baseball season....
Lil Joe, I'm still waiting for you to come out.
sdw2is... what are you talking about?
Cutler signed a six-year, $47.86 million contract in July of 2006 so he is signed through the 2011 season.
That means this year, next year and the one after that too.
It is Orton's contract that expires after this season.
I also don't know what you mean about Cutler "did not use his running game"
Cutler does not call the plays and the Steelers defense is one of the best in the league against the run.
You also said that the radio announcers said that "The crowd is cheering as Jay Cutler is being taken out"
What?
The Bears scored a TD so he was not being "taken out" of the game.
He was leaving the field because his job was done.
MVP? I'd want to go with Afalava or someone on the defensive front, even though there aren't any statistical standouts to defend that choice. Marinelli is looking like the best hire of the year, and that includes Cutler. And while the corners are getting beat deep from time to time, the risk/reward factor is high on the Bears' blitzes. That is, when they create pressure, it's a game-changer.
sdw2is, sorry about your bad experience, I really like Joniak...but that's it...the others are idiots......kep on listenin'
There are several good things to like about the Bears win -
Cutler played well. Not as good as he can, but still a nice effort.
Cutler is making our receivers better - Johhny Knox = Eddie Royal? Could happen.
Marinelli is as good as advertised. Lots of pressure means you are always in a game.
Defensive adjustments - we actually learned from the first drive, and did some things right to correct our problems.
Unfortunately, there are bad issues, too -
Our run blocking schemes need review - Cedric Benson gained more than 140 yards against GB today, while Forte had a 2.2 yard avg. against them. Our line isn't that awful, it has to be the schemes.
We continue to have a terrible streak of injuries. Now Alex Brown is hurt. We started the season with 2/3 of our secondary either injured, or coming off of virtually no preseason work because of injuries, a 1st string defensive tackle, and our best back up RB out for the year. Then entered this game missing Urlacher for the year, and one of our starting LBs out for the game. We have already had more injuries than most playoff teams do in a season. Unless we go the rest of the season without any further injuries, I don't think we will make the playoffs - we're already too deep into our bench.
Will we ever get any calls by the refs? I agree with the other poster - the Steelers were holding CONSTANTLY. No calls. Only really great teams can beat the opposing team AND the refs. I really think Lovie needs to lobby harder to get some calls.
Dumb penalties - since the refs are more than happy to call penalties against us, it would be great if we quit getting dopey penalties on the D-line. Aggressive is awesome - stupid is another matter.
game ball to Jeff Reed
Bubba's Mom I doubt we'll see Joe Cow(ard)ley again since he let his mouth overload his a$$.
I was more impressed with the defense in the red zone than on the rest of the field but also give credit to Lovie for making adjustments on the fly which had not been done prior to him taking over the defense himself. IF Reed had made those 2 FG's I believe the offense would have been more aggressive in the laste minute and a half and the final score would have been 21-20, a Bears win regardless.
The O line did a better job of protecting Cutler this week and Cutler did a better job of handling the blitzes while the recievers did not quit on routes. Knox, Hester, Davis, Forte, Olsen and Bennett just may prove to be a formidable receiving corps giving Cutler a wide range of options and defenses headaches.
Generally i try to stay away from predictions but after consulting my ouija board this morning look for a Bears win over the Seahawks 27-20.
First of all, to the Sun-Times headline geniuses; we did not STEAL this game. We WON this game.
Considering all the dropped passes, and the 'worst of timing' penalties by the Bears, I'd say those two missed field goals balanced out very well. It's all part of the game.
Knox and Davis played well. I knew Cutler would be on the same page, for the most part, with his receivers this week. Knox did over-angle a square out on a 'third and long' that would have kept the drive going, but I'm sure Jay talked to him about it so that's another check mark corrected for future reference. Alex Brown was the only 'D' lineman of significance today, but the line overload had something to do with that. I just wish we would disguise our blitzes a bit longer and come from the corner a little more. Defense was 'SOLID'. If not for a few BLATANT holds on Pitt, they may be less 50-75 yrds. On Mendenhalls' long run, a lineman had the 'two-arm clamp' around Hillenmeyers' neck. Sht, Stevie Wonder saw that!
Cutler was very good! You throw the ball with that much accuracy while backpeddling as much as he did, and you're a very good, strong armed QB. He makes the line better and we said that at the beginning of the season. Plus, and I say this very seriously, there are passes that this man completes that would have been tipped or blocked at the line, had it been Rex or Orton. You'll have a better idea at the end of the season when you 'haven't noticed' any tipped passes at the line. One of those may have been what got us over the fence. Who knows?
Knox is fast, and with a little more experience, and a little more strength, he's going to be a force to be reckoned with. You CAN'T teach speed. Doesn't mend the need for a BIG receiver, but surely softens the pain. I've liked Kellen from day 1; he has all the tools, what's not to like. I didn't tape the game this week; could somebody please tell me if that hit on Davis after the TD was an illegal blow to the head with a forearm?
Nobody really runs on Pitts line, and GB blitzed like crazy, which helped fill lanes, so I'm not too worried about the running game, just yet. Let's reserve comment on that part of our game for a later vote. Benson ran roughshod on GB because Cincy is not the patsy people think they are. They beat GB, as we did, on both sides of the ball. They were able to overcome their mistakes just a tad better, though. Hey, I picked Cincy to beat us!
Last week was the exception, rather than rule, for Cutler. As he holds the OL, he also makes receivers. I'm cool with it.
Once we start to get rolling a little earlier in games I think it'll make for a much easier road. Detroit ran on Minnys' vaunted defense yesterday, and I wasn't very impressed. Their eggs are all in one basket; Adrian Peterson. Nice container to have, but breakable.
Well, I picked the Monsters to beat Seattle, so I'll see you in the same atmosphere next week.
GO BEARS!!!
Big time win for the Bears.
This win could easily catapult them to a major winning streak as their next 6 games are very winnable before they have to play Philly and @Minn back to back.
Game ball goes Jay as he was able to settle down from the disastrous opening day.
We even got to see some young young players emerging with Knox and Davis making some huge catches.
How clutch is Robbie Gould? There was barely a doubt in my mind that he'd nail that winning kick.
The running game (or lack there of) is a major concern. Next week should be better as they play a Seattle team that just got 'run over' for 200 yards by Frank Gore. If they can't run against the Seahawks, then it's definitely time to worry.
Stu responds: You're right, RPK. Also, it looks like QB Matt Hasselback (rib) might be out for the Seahawks, which would make this game quite winnable for the Bears.
1. MVP of the game - Jay Cutler. Who impressed the most? Johnny Knox and Kellen Davis, albeit because of the MVP of the game.
2. His 4 picks last week were an aberration of course, but it doesn't mean that he won't throw more interceptions down the road. I just get tired of all the articles about his facial expressions and demeanor. Everyone thinks they're a psychiatrist!
3. Knox has the potential to be a great one, but he still has to get stronger. That'll come with time and work ethic. I wouldn't say I feel a lot better about the receiving corps, but again, that'll take time. I don't jump the gun on just 2 games like many casual Bears fans do.
4. Yes, I'm very concerned about the running game. We couldn't get anything going last week against the Packers and Cedric Benson ran over them for 140+ rushing yards. Next week, we have the Seahawks who just gave up 200+ rushing yds to Frank Gore, so if Forte and co. can't get anything going next week, then this will have to be the next big topic of conversation for the Bears.
5. I actually didn't think the Defense played all that great, but their "bend but don't break philosophy" worked this time around with the 2 missed field goals. I thought Pittsburgh moved the ball with ease and were only pretty much slowed down when the rain starting falling. Only 1 sack by the defense? Not good, especially when there was a statistic out there showing that Big Ben has been sacked over 100 times in the last 2 years because their O-Line has been struggling in pass protection since Alan Faneca left the team. And now that I witnessed 1 single Bengals player sack Aaron Rodgers 5 times yesterday, I'm beginning to wonder if the D-Line performance last week was a fluke?
6. Overall, the game plan on offense worked just fine, but the defense was not very good I thought, especially giving up a 92 yard opening drive TD in the very first home game. Sorry, I gotta nitpick on the defense in this one. I wasn't impressed at all yesterday, but at least Tillman and Bowman looked good for the most part.
7. Personally, I like playing on natural grass the most when I play football, but for the Bears team in general, they're best suited for fieldturf because they're a team predicated on speed. It's not exactly "homefield advantage" when they can't even get the grass sodding corrected, but what do I know, I'm not a landscaper. This is all on the Chicago Park District.
8. If Matt Hasselbeck plays, it could be a close one again, but either way, I expect the Bears to win. I just won't be surprised if they don't, that's all. That running game is absolutely the key next week.
I think the Bears will annihilate the Seahawks, say 35-10. I also think Kellen Davis was a standout yesterday. He made some key catches in addition to the touchdown one. Olsen showed his toughness by coming back after that sideline hit, Hester made a key catch in traffic,Cutler was what he was supposed to be, and the defense played well but got a lttle bit lucky too. The Bears in general lucked out in this game because the Steelers will probably not miss two field goals in the same game the rest of the season. Bears and Bear fans have a right to feel great about yesterday's win, but don't forget that it took two missed field goals for them to accomplish it.
Hey,Stu, I expect a word of praise for my prediction that Carson Palmer and ochocinco would beat the Packers. Who would have thunk it besides me, the world's number one Packer hater?
Stu responds: Props to you, Paul. I had the Packers as my top pick in my weekly pool, I should have listened to you.
90.9 vs 71.5???
Here I am asking for someone to help me on whether that hit on Davis after the TD catch was an illegal forearm, and it's the caption photo, d'oh! I need to pay some attention to these stellar pictures Stu's putting up. My bad!
Why wasn't this called!!!
Anthony, forget about that illegal forearm play, Kellen Davis got the touchdown and that's all that mattered. I'm more shocked about the non-call in the long Rashard Mendenhall run that led to Pittsburgh's 2nd TD... didn't anyone out there notice the blatant hold and takedown of Hunter Hillenmeyer that caused that big hole? When I saw the replay 2 and 3 times, I couldn't believe Phil Simms didn't say anything about it! I thought that was the worst non-call of the game.
Who was your MVP in this game?
Jeff Reid - If he hadn't missed the FG's, we probably wouldn't have won.
Does this change your impression of Cutler (27-of-38, 236 yards, 2 TDs, no INT, 104.7 QB rating) after what you saw in Green Bay, or were you already convinced that his four picks vs. the Packers were an aberration?
The jury is still out. Cutler only had 6.2 yards per attempt, should be around 8.0
How good can Johnny Knox (six catches, 70 yards, 1 TD) become?
We will see now that teams realize they need to cover him and can probably single cover Hester and Bennett. If he can adjust and still get open, then he will be good.
Do you feel a lot better about the receiving corps after what you saw from Kellen Davis (five catches, 38 yards, 1 TD) and Greg Olsen (three catches, 41 yards)?
Feel a little better....
Are you concerned about the inability to get a running game going vs. Pittsburgh? Matt Forte was limited to 29 yards on 13 carries, but he did catch five passes for 33.
Yes, very, very concerned - especially since it appears that Cedric Benson had no problem running all over the Packers. Another Lovie player development fiasco......could have gotten another receiver with the Forte pick last year......
What was the key to the outstanding effort by the defense, keeping the Steelers' ground game in check and containing Ben Roethlisberger?
Way too few running attempts (only 22 with a 4.8 average) by the Steelers. If they had stuck with the run, we would never have gotten the ball back at all. Bad coaching by the Steelers....
What did you think of the game plan and Lovie Smith's coaching performance?
Not much....
The newly re-sodded Soldier Field turf seemed to be causing problems. Would you like to see FieldTurf installed?
We may have to since it turns to dirt after the 3rd home game every year.
The Seahawks lost 23-10 at San Francisco. What's your early-line forecast for next Sunday's game at Seattle?
Bears 17 - Seahawks 21
A win is a win after a loss being a loss. Nuff said.
And what would this blog be without a little shout-out to Hitman?
Yo $Hit! JaMarcus has sure looked fine so far. I can see him flinging the Raiders into the playoffs ... no problem.
7 for 24 should get them there easily.
I wish we had him instead of Cutler.
Paul, I said the Bengals would beat the packers last Sunday, and I am the number one Packer hater, plus I am surrounded by the cheese heads.
I guess there are kegel exercises for men...go villano go!!!
and why you gotta call me names across a keyboard?...(ie...kegel)
Bears blew their wad and still needed the other teams kicker to win...
21-17 sound about right, John
Hey, stuckinwisconsin, I'm in wisconsin too, but on the west side of the state, which means I'm not only surrounded by cheeseheads but also by silly looking people wearing Viking helmets.
Edgar, I mentioned the hold on Hillenmeyer. OK, I can live with that miss in traffic, no matter how blatant, but the blow to Davis is something the league outlawed this year. Not to mention it was in the open, on a TD, with everyone, and their mother, watching.
THAT should have been called!
My bad, Anthony, I didn't catch you mentioning the Hillenmeyer hold already. To be honest, I'm not familiar with the illegal forearm rule in the NFL. Or perhaps you were trying to say that it was an illegal blow to the head area? That rule I'm aware of, but even then, it wasn't really mentioned as an afterthought anywhere from the commentators or from the radio geeks, neither from Kellen Davis himself complaining about it, but it still was TD for us, nevertheless. Let's call it as it is then, a no harm, no foul non-call? ;-)
"why you gotta call me names across a keyboard?..."
Why not?
Paul, I find Viking fans far more palatable than Packer fans and
their stupid affliction for Favre. I suppose you will get the worst of it in two weeks when the Pack and Vikes meet. Good luck with that.
The only other team I have to put up with here are the Badgers. Bucky this, Bucky that. F%$k that.
Hitman, props to you and your Raiders. With both teams being on the
west coast this week, I hope none of us fans in Seattle will get
hit in the head with a J. Russell pass. No North Korea Missle attacks this week okay?
yeah stuck..too many blows to the head....bears fans...I know
...and Jeff Reed will lead you to the Superbowl...
and Villano...because you wouldn't do it in real life...well, not twice anyway....but go ahead and show your Kegel on here
and Villano...because you wouldn't do it in real life...well, not twice anyway.
If you say so.
*Who impressed you the most? Who was your MVP in this game?
KD: Cutler, Offensive Line
*Does this change your impression of Cutler (27-of-38, 236 yards, 2 TDs, no INT, 104.7 QB rating) after what you saw in Green Bay, or were you already convinced that his four picks vs. the Packers were an aberration?
KD: Jury was out of Cutler for me, but he changed my mind. He showed why we will win every close game we lost last year.
*How good can Johnny Knox (six catches, 70 yards, 1 TD) become? Do you feel a lot better about the receiving corps after what you saw from Kellen Davis (five catches, 38 yards, 1 TD) and Greg Olsen (three catches, 41 yards)?
KD: Was more of an indication of how good Cutler is for me. Defense will figure Knox like they did Hester and Olsen before him. But Cutler will have to be a step ahead of them and make a new star every week.
*Are you concerned about the inability to get a running game going vs. Pittsburgh? Matt Forte was limited to 29 yards on 13 carries, but he did catch five passes for 33.
KD: Yes because I think Forte is just average. But No because Cutler will cause teams to move those 8 out of the box. I thought it was the line, but it appears to be Forte.
*What was the key to the outstanding effort by the defense, keeping the Steelers' ground game in check and containing Ben Roethlisberger?
KD: Stepping up. Urlacher's absence made them all play better. Being at home helped. Playing against the defending Champions. The bad loss at Green Bay. But mostly - sheer effort. Our defense is good so far.
*What did you think of the game plan and Lovie Smith's coaching performance?
KD: Lovie knows how to get down and dirty. If the defense is playing well - you have to credit him. But anytime the team wins, its because of him directly. But I look at coaching by seeing if we had a chance to win. And should we have won. Lovie snatch victory from defeat on Sunday. He managed that clock all the way down and got the victory.
*The newly re-sodded Soldier Field turf seemed to be causing problems. Would you like to see FieldTurf installed?
KD: Yes. We have a fast team. Its to our advantage.
*The Seahawks lost 23-10 at San Francisco. What's your early-line forecast for next Sunday's game at Seattle?
KD: Either SF is very good, or Seatle is very bad. I am thinking Seatle is bad and think the Bears will beat them 21-14. Bears could run off 5 in a row.
Report from the Great Northwest:
The Seattle Seahawks are very beat up and Matt Hasselback may not play due to a broken rib (as of this morning). Actually, it's my opinion that Seattle knows he won't play, but will not divulge until absolutely necessary because the Bears have to prepare for both he and his backup thereby splitting their focus. The backup Seneca Wallace is almost strictly a running QB in what he does well and a huge downgrade from Wallace. About eight other starters are reported to be out. If the Bears don't win this game, then either Seattle truly has a monumental home field advantage, the Bears really aren't very good, or a combination of both.
Go Bears!
"*The newly re-sodded Soldier Field turf seemed to be causing problems. Would you like to see FieldTurf installed?
KD: Yes. We have a fast team. Its to our advantage."
Back in 1980 I purchased a three flat with a back yard that was in terrible condition, as far as landscaping was concerned. I took that patch of debris and created a lawn that my 165 lb. Great Dane was unable to destroy. Despite her repeated attempts, she couldn't kick up so much as a divot on that lawn.
Here's how I did it:
After pulling up all the garbage by the roots, I stripped it of any remaining grass and weeds. I tilled and graded the yard, and used a broadleaf weed killer on the barren soil, letting it sit for two days.
Then I added another inch of top-soil and sand, tamping it down.
Next I seeded the yard, adding more top-soil as I raked it in. I watered the yard for one day ... let it dry out a bit and THEN I sodded over the freshly planted grass.
After rolling the sod, I seeded the yard again, and continually watered it 24/7 for six days. (a light, steady mist)
When I finished that grass was so well knitted into the substrate that you'd have needed channel locks to pull up a clump. The seed I planted below the sod pushed it's way up, and the seed I planted on top of the sod took root between the blades of grass in the sod.
That was one tight, tough lawn. There was no room for a weed to even think about taking up residence.
I don't see why these so called professional groundskeepers have such a hard time putting down grass that will stand up to some serious punishment. They have all the tools, and a semi-controlled environment. There's no excuse.
We Should be 2-0
You know what, Mark: I've seen guys give opinions because they want to be a coach and they use blogging as a way to see it to fruition. But I've never seen one that looks like a guy is angling for a job as a .....groundskeeper. Well, good luck with that, old buddy.
Are you dissing my horticultural skills William?
My botanical acumen?
My green thumb?
*thumbing nose at WRD with my green thumb*
I'm just glad that only the thumb is green. Hate to think that you would give me the green finger.
I'm just glad that only the thumb is green. Hate to think that you would give me the green finger.
I'm saving that for Hitman.
Hitman has had his share of Green....that much I know.
seriously Villano, now you are in my area of expertise. I am surprised
if that actually worked, and you didn't kill your lawn. Shall I point
out your shortcomings? It was 1980 after all. Perhaps you remembered it
wrong.
1.) broad leaf weed killer only kills current weeds. Putting it on
bare soil will do absolutley nothing( vegetation killer would have made your soil sterile for years). Wasted money.
2.) returning your parcel to the beginning of the vegetation
succession cycle(bare soil), then tilling it...you brought
to the surface weed seeds that had been dormant. It's well
known that seeds may lay dormant in the soil for hundreds of
thousands of years.
3.) however, you covered up the weed seeds with fresh Sod, thusly
making it impossible for these dormant seeds to germinate, as
well as the grass seed that you for some reason planted
underneath sod. More waste of money.
4.) Sod is Kentucky Blue grass. Kentucky Blue grass takes a long
time to germinate, so when seeding one would use a mixture
Ryegrass, which germinates quickly. Eventually, because of the
way Bluegrass grows, it will 'choke' out the ryegrass. By
sodding, you are skipping the whole ryegrass cycle, so seeding
is fruitless, unless you seeded with Bluegrass, which takes
a month to germinate, and surely your sod seams would have
healed by then anyway. Again you wasted money on grass seed.
5.) Tall fescue is very durable and Ideal for dog areas, however
that would have been choke out by your bluegraass Sod as
well. So if you seeded with that-waste of money.
6.) it is also well known that the gradient of soil tension
is stronger than gravity, thusly when water comes in contact
with soil it spreads out first, then goes down. A thorough deep and infrequent watering would surely create root depth and
lawn durability. A 24/7/ misting would only create an environment
ideal for fungi, and other conditions detrimental to a healthy lawn, including poor root development.
Are you sure you are remembering correctly? Perhaps you were one
of the 'lucky' ones. Anyone else who follows your method, would
surely be disappointed. So it must be posted ** Do not try this
at home***.
Groundskeepers are simply not going to do anything close to what you did, nor will NFL coaches take advice from any of the armchair coaches that try to post here either. So, in a sense, your
post is on track with the rest of the posts here.
We are in the peak growing season for cool season grasses, thus, I would suspect that a couple of weeks off will do the Soldier field
sod just fine. Except the Park district keeps having concerts. That
is the only thing we can do. KEEP OFF THE GRASS.
What is this blog called again: Full Horticulture Press? I sometimes suffer from insomia. When a bout come on I know exactly where to come and get some shut eye. Then again I've left others to read my self-serving lengthy blogs before so I was due to get my comeuppances. Thanks karma.
And Stuck you have to do more than your last request. Keep off the meth, shurms and crack as well. After reading a few of your blogs I know for sure that recreactional drugs are being used in wisconsin.
Yes, Stuck, you had that coming my friend. What was that all about? Who invited you to give us a full chapter from a book on greens keeping? Where did that come from? I'm really interested in music, piano and performance. Maybe I'll write a chapter on that myself for all to see on FCP.
Heck, I think we should all write our own chapter on in whatever it is we're interested. O.K., we now anoint you "Roger Bossard of the North."
Give us a break man!
I was simply trying to keep people from trying Villano's method. Second, while I have given advice to Roman regarding the types of plants for his balcony, I have never talked about horticulture here. Of course, it goes without saying, I don't do drugs. I keep off the grass. Hitman, where we gonna party???? I guess I just got my 'come downance'. Buzz Killers.
p.s. please do not compare me Roger Bossard. I have no respect for him and his over-thought drainage systems.
