Here's the catch: Bears' WRs lacking

Buffalo's Leodis McKelvin picks off a Jay Cutler pass intended for Devin Hester.

We know it was only the first preseason game. We know Jay Cutler played only one quarter and threw just 10 passes. We know the Bears were missing Matt Forte and Greg Olsen and admit they came into the game with no intention of showcasing their real offense.

Still, what we saw Saturday in Buffalo was enough to make Bears fans feel rightfully uneasy about just how smooth the transition to the Cutler Era will be.

The Bears don't have any proven wide receivers, and there are signs that this could become increasingly frustrating to Cutler. Popular wisdom in Chicago is that a great quarterback can make a great receiver by consistently putting the ball where it needs to be, but that only applies if the receiver has sufficient skills that can be nurtured. Who on the Bears fits that description?

Devin Hester is blessed with dazzling speed and will be a dangerous deep threat, but he is much too inexperienced at the position to be considered a No. 1 receiver. As we saw Saturday, Hester will struggle to get open on shorter routes, and Cutler will become reluctant to look for him if defensive backs are able to outjump him and win battles for the ball, as Buffalo's Leodis McKelvin did for an interception.

Cutler implicated Hester in his postgame remarks when he noted that "Devin is more of a go-get-it guy; he's not really a jump-up-and-get-it [guy]." Never mind that Cutler threw an ill-advised pass off his back foot and left it short; the Bears' new QB had Brandon Marshall and other talented receivers who could bail him out in Denver, and it's understandable that he could become disheartened with what he has to work with now.

Cutler did hook up with tight end Desmond Clark for a nice gain, and will benefit from the return of Olsen and Forte. But no passing attack built around tight ends and running backs is going to be very explosive. As Bears columnist Mike Mulligan points out in Monday's Sun-Times, if not Hester, then who can be counted on at wide receiver? Rashied Davis might not even make the team, Earl Bennett has yet to catch an NFL pass, Brandon Rideau is a practice-squad reject and the other top candidates are rookies.

Maybe things will look much better Saturday when Cutler makes his home debut against the Giants. But the suspicion here is that the Bears' passing game is going to be a serious work in progress that extends well into the regular season, and it might be time to revise those lofty 12-win projections.

Hitman, again this is preseason game 1 and you should know better than to make such silly comparisons. I was at the preseason opener at SF in '06 and the Bears looked terrible, Antonio Bryant ate them for lunch and the niners fans were all chanting 'DA BEARS!' after the game. Come regular season the Bears killed them. If preseason is one thing, it's meaningless. Do you really think the Raiders would 'slaughter' the Cowgirls in reg season? I don't think so. And your comment about Cable getting more out of his Raiders than Lovie from his Bears leaves you lots of wiggle room, more than you usually leave yourself. What do you mean by that exactly, do 4 Raiders wins = 10 Bears wins? I can tell you that the Bears have a much better chance of taking the nfc north title than the Raiders have of beating out SD for the AFC west title, you can count on that. How can we guage the Bears offense with Olsen and Forte out at the same time? What if the stars align and the Bears beat Pittsburg? Your probably right on that front(jury's out on 0-2), but what if? You don't strike me as the type to ever admit to being wrong, hitman, but just because you use three periods after each sentence doesn't mean you can tell the future, noone can. Excuse me for posting on two seperate threads but I would love to hear what you(hitman) have to say.

The cover 2 once again rose its ugly head,In the dismal pass defense the Bears once again played Bill receivers ran unmolested,as Lovie once again looked bewildered on the side lines. This scene is all to familiar. We watched it all last year. As Einstein said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.Lovie Smith apparently is incapable of change. Cover 2 is all he knows. Until he's gone bear fans better get used to seeing opposing teams march up and down the field unopposed.

Let me see if I have this straight...

Any sane mind knows we're better at QB now..

But for the last 3 weeks, every beat writer in this town (including Mulligan) has been going on about the receivers...how Cutler will make them better, how he and Bennett look like they're back at Vandy, and how they've all been lights out at practice.

So which is it?

Bottom line is that it's preposterous to make any judgements after 1 pre-season game without your top RB, and your top receiver (Olsen).

First off, the Bears had no running game. Forte better be 100 percent for the season because they will desperately need him.

Secondly, Cutler did not look good at reading defenses. He forced that pic. Hester had no chance, and he needs to admit that he tried to force that pass into double coverage.

Hester may not be a number 1, but the ineptness of the offense in game 1 was a team wide issue.

And it's true, Hester isn't tall enough to be a "lob it up and get it" type guy, be he;s fast enough for the crossing patterns and deep routes. Curl routes may be a concern since he's not wide enough physically to block out the defender from running in and deflecting the pass. But his speed should give him a large enough cushion so that can also be negated.

Those two passing situations ( curl routes and lob passes ) are perfect for Olsen. He excelled at those last year and it's waaaay too early to be concerned. Remember, the Bills already have a pre season game under their belts.

And in the "it's only preseason, but that guy looked good" category, anyone else impressed with Caleb Hanie? Obviously Cutler is the man, but I am very happy with out back up situation as well as the starter. I remember him impressing in last years preseason. Eric Kramer even commented how "Hanie was the probably the best QB in camp last year."

Let's look at some other positives.

Urlacher looked like the Brian of old!

The man was all over the field and I actually saw him shed some blocks. Amazing, forgot he could do that. I also thought Dusty Dvorcek looked pretty good too. Hopefully he can stay healthy.

Not sure about Gilbert. He looked a bit too skinny, but not ready to call him a bust yet.

It's amazing how there seems to be more hoopla in the local media about Cutler's post-game comments to Hester than from the fans themselves. Are people mindreaders now saying that Cutler threw Hester under the bus with his comments? Just a few months ago, most of us were all so happy about JA finally making a trade for an all-pro QB and now people are ready to say that this guy can be a locker room cancer? What Cutler said about Hester is a FACT! Maybe the guy just can't say it the right way in a press conference, but just let him play football instead of asking the same type of questions almost every day it seems like. I can see it now, Cutler addresses the media later in the week and will say that his comments were misinterpreted. Blame the coaches for trying to rush Hester into an All pro wide receiver. Blame them for trying to transform him into something that he really isn't. It's one preseason game and yes, I guarantee you, if this was a real regular season game, no way does Cutler try to force a floater pass to Hester in coverage like that. A laser beam pass down the middle maybe he'll try to force it, but not a floater pass on the fly. It's a meaningless preseason game for Cutler to try to see what he has in his receivers against real opposition and not just practices without all the game pads. Don't forget also, the Bills were already playing in their 2nd preseason game and running a no-huddle offense of all things in a preaseason game! Give the team a chance to play more preseason games. We already just got over the Vick nonsense about playing for the Bears and now Caleb Hanie looking good again in a preseason game just like last year. Can we now put that backup QB debate to rest please? It's a BACKUP QB, folks! And yes yes yes, we all already know about the WR issues on the Bears. We've known about this since Berrian left the Bears almost 2 years ago. Quit panicking and let the kids on the team develop. If it doesn't work out early on, then keep at it with Burress (who'll be suspended for half the season anyway) or the Boldin trade talks during the season. JA surprised us with Cutler, maybe he'll do it again later this season or maybe not, but geez, enough with the quick judgments already!

Good to have you back Stu....ROD is a top notch replacement, but at the end of the day he is still just the back up QB.

Speaking of lifetime backups....how about that Kyle Orton? Whhheeeewwweeeee if I were Denver TODAY....I would be standing at the Bears Customer Service window waving my reciept in their face like a sailors wife bidding her husband bon voyage!!!

I watched the Bears game twice....and here is what I took away.

FINALLY WE HAVE SOMEONE WHO CAN ACTUALLY THROW TO SOMEONE IN STRIDE

FINALLY WE HAVE SOMEONE WHO CAN STEP UP IN THE POCKET AND AVOID THE INITIAL RUSH OF DEFENDERS

FINALLY WE HAVE SOMEONE WHO CAN CONSISTENTLY HANDLE THE CENTER/QB SNAP

FINALLY WE HAVE SOMEONE WHO LOOKS LIKE A BONIFIED QB WEARING A BEARS JERSEY.

HESTER NEEDS TO MAN UP AND RETURN KICKS AGAIN

WE NEED PLAXICO BURRIS IN A HURRY. EVEN IF WE DONT GET HIM UNTIL THE 5TH GAME.

LOVIE BETTER COME UP WITH SOME GOOD PLAYS. CAUSE IF IT COMES DOWN TO HIM OR CUTLER. LOVIE"S GOTS TO GO.

Seeing as we continue the Tampa 2 Chicago tradition of 80% or better pass completions, a tight end-running back efficient offense may be just the neutralizer we need.

I'll be optimistically cautious until I see more.

This whole weekend was filled with 'opposite ends of the spectrum' in sports. The good/bad, high/low, crazy/sane, whatever you wanna call it, but I saw it!

You had the 'New Look Bears' looking like the Bears of old, and the slightly slimmed down Bobby Jenks pulling another rabbit out of his hat; for the other team, of course! YING.

Then there was that 22yr. old, slightly out of shape Lightning Bolt, proving he's from another Galaxy, and Tiger Woods, proving he is human after all. YANG.

Hey, I wonder if the Bears can sway Usain to don some pads. What!?! You haven't seen stranger things?

Nothing to comment on. The only thing worth watching in preseason is the new names on the roster to see if they can play. Cutler has two of the BEST tight-ends in football. He also has a decent running back. I am not sold on any receiver we have including Hester. I will believe them when they get on the field. I just hope Cutler finds good chemistry with them early enough to win at the beginning of the season. And I don't care how he does it. Chew the clock and reserve the defense. Force the other team to take chances because the score is out of reach. That is the blueprint we need. But I would love to run up the score most games. But its all wishful thinking. Just win baby.

well Ben...when I'm wrong...which hasn't happened yet...I'll let ya know...and I love how people add to what I say...with you, you accused me of saying the Raiders will win the AFC west...never said that, but they have a way better shot than the bears do in the North...Ben, the Raiders were "prepared" on Saturday...ummm, the Bears?...Tom Cable is the next John Madden...deal with it, and I don't expect you to be happy for me....

remember last year when Tampa and Houston ruined Chicago's season?...who spanked those teams?...Cable and the Raiders?...yes Ben...Cable and the Raiders...."Tom'll take his'n and beat yours'n and then take yours'n and beat his'n".....

and I'm glad my ellipses freak you out.........

I've already said...many times....it hasn't and won't change.... the Bears are going to be 7-9 at best, but I'm calling 6-10 due to long season, injuries, and no depth...and no WR's, and no DB's, and no pressure on the QB, and an O line that has Olin and only Olin (Pace and Williams will both need to be replaced at some point and by who, lol)..not to mention a coaching staff that gets out coached every halftime...Do I hear a 5-11?...an 0-4 start being capped by losing to the Lions isn't out of the question...

I don't hate the bears; I hate what Jerry and the yes men have done to my team....and if you've paid attention to the things I've said the last couple of years....you'd know my team is much better than Jerry's

and blind loyalty is very unbecoming and I'm embarrassed for youz that subscribe to it....check yourselves for crying out loud

Is Matt Jones still unsigned?...I mean, if all Cutler can do is throw jump balls under pressure.Ed Hochuli isn't going to bail his grandson out every game........

I can’t believe that there are Bears fans that are so desperate for something to complain about with the QB situation.
After decades of really bad players taking the snaps here now you don’t know how to react to a real NFL talent at the position and it is embarrassing.
Accept that the Bears have a young and talented QB and stop looking for a dark cloud to park under. Would you rather have Rex or Kyle instead of Cutler?
If so then you need to follow Soccer.
Caleb Hanie looks like he is good enough to be the back up without going out to find a washed up Brian Griese type. The more playing time he gets the better and please do not for a moment take that as him competing for the starting job. This is about him being the back up QB and nothing more and this stupid QB controversy thing that we have all participated in for so many years died the day that the Bears picked up Cutler.
Basanez can be cut right now.
He just does not have it and it is a waste of time even thinking about him as an alternative as the number 2.

Ron Rivera had a lot of experience in a variety of NFL defenses and knew how to mix in elements of the 4-3, 3-4, 46 and the Cover-2 to keep the other teams off balance.
He did not approach the game with blinders on and that is why he is gone.
Lovie is all about the “Can’t” Cover-2 and it is all he knows. A one trick pony that has not tricked anyone for several years now.
You have to have a disruptive tackle who can push the O line back into the QB in order to make it work and they do not have that.
Lets be honest here…. Tommie Harris is no Warren Sapp no matter how much they hype him up. The truth is there and it is not pretty.
Tampa did not win anything until Lovie and Dungy were gone and the Rams won their Super Bowl because they had one of the best offensive teams in league history.
It is easy to play defense when you are up 35-7.
The same goes for the Colts.
Look at the offense that they had while Dungy was there. Was it the Cover-2 or the fact that they could score 40 points any Sunday that made them successful?

The high percentage of completions against the Bears D is alarming and it is not just because of the injuries to their CBs.
This defensive scheme is full of holes and the QB does not have to look very hard to find them.
Teams have studied this defense and know just how to take advantage of it and that started to show through during the last half of the 2006 season.
The flavor of the day has now grown stale yet they continue to serve it up on a plate because it is the only recipe allowed in Lovie’s kitchen.
That works at KFC but not in the NFL.
The Bears have the personal best suited to play a 3-4 but not the defensive coordinator to implement it. Rivera was replaced with Lovie’s friend and fellow Cover-2 yes man and he is going to stay the course no matter what.

As far as the WRs go….. Jerry could have made a move to pick up someone that has some real experience catching the ball and he did not do it. I know that they did not have enough to offer in a trade for Boldin but Joey Galloway was available as a FA and they never even looked in his direction. Funny how he was good enough to find a spot with the Patriots.
Antonio Bryant was available. Not good enough to replace Rashied Davis?
Give me a break!
The fact that the Bears now have a revolving door at the punt and kick off return spot while Hester looks like a man out of position says all you need to know about Lovie.
I saw a DT trying to return a kick the other night and I did not find that to be the least bit entertaining. If I want a good laugh I can pop “Super Bad” into the DVD player and the caps off a few beers.
They have taken the greatest return man in NFL history and have turned him into a non-factor. Dumb… dumb… DUMB!
No one could stop this guy…. except Lovie.
Too bad he can’t shut down the other teams’ playmakers like he has done with his own.

Bear fans sometimes I think you missed your true calling in life and should have been coaches....you make more sense than most of the coaches and GMs in the NFL.

I finally watched the Bears preseason game on NFL replay today. I do not blame Jay Cutler at all. Hester sucks. Even the commentaters said it look like Hester just gave up. There is no way I see Hester developing into a #1 receiver. He gives no effort I saw him just give up on plays just give up. The Chicago bear team did not look fired up for that I blame the coaching staff. I suspect if Lovie doesn't get it right Shananan will be the coach in Chicago soon.

The Chicago Bears made two crucial mistakes in the offseason. Not signing Toomer or signing Hood. Vasher looks terrible he got beat so bad in the first quarter I just laughed because I can't do anything else. The secondary is bad...Tillman is out but Vasher looks horrible. I hope recovers and decides to play football if not...there is a new league available for underachievers. In theory we need a pass rush to help the secondary...but we need some talent in the secondary. Why is Mike Brown in KC? Why take one of the most talented safety's in the NFL and move him out of a almost talentless secondary? Graham looked good....is there a trade available for a safety beside Afalava?

Matt Jones is still available. All of the Chicago receivers are backups. on any playoff team from last year. Are there any starters on the roster? Can anyone name one bear receiver that can start for any playoff team from 09? Is there a trade possible for Antwan Boldin? Chad Johnson? Andre Johnson? Michael Crabtree? Steve Breaston? Brandon Marshall? This offense needs help at wr? Is there any wr that will get a double team?

The offense has to be able to win in many ways. Able to win running when the defense plays back. Able to win passing when 8 are in the box. Able to win on special teams and able to win with a defense with turnovers. Imagine how good the team would be if we had a wr who commanded a double team and Forte in the backfield running for over 1000 yards a year. That would give a defense fits. Defensive coordinators will retire becasue of the Bears. I demand an explosive offense with talent and a defense that gets turnovers and doesn't give up first downs like it is going out of style as a fan I deserve that.

Go BEARS 2009

I agree with ALL of Culzie's Critiques. Especially the SNAP. I wasn't even watching for that. Hester is a NATURAL at returning the ball. Why would you mess with that? Like asking Robbie Gould to line up in the backfield.

Phil - you are right. The Bears might have Derrick Rose'ed us. Pick up ONE player and just fill the seats. Joey Galloway should be a Bear for sure. I just don't get Chicago. Its making me mad. I have been hearing about Superbad - is it good? I almost got a hernia watching King Pin. How does it compare?

I also cringe everytime I read Hitman. His logic is very hard to argue against. And his track record is pretty good. Hitman, I need the Bears man.

Hitman, time to admit your wrong. At no point did I insinuate that you said the Raiders would win the west. I asked you what you meant by your statement that Cable will get more from the Raiders than Lovie will from the Bears. And you conveniently dodged that question. I wanted you to put some value behind your statement, did you mean Oak would have a better record? I didn't put squat in your mouth, my statement about chances of divisional titles favoring da bears was all me. The Bears clearly have a better shot against Minny or GB(we split with each of them), than the Raiders do against SD who thoroughly dominated their division last year.

You also dodged my other question. Do you think oaktown puts up 456 yds total offense and 'slaughters them cowgirls in reg season? I don' think so.

Tom Cable = next Madden, I'll believe it when I see it but thats another bold assumption that'll probaby be moot after this year cuz i don't think Madden ever coached Raider team with a losing record. If Oak finishes '09 with a winning record I'll be the first to personally congratulate you on your infinite wisdom and foresight. But if they don't I'm sure you'll have forgotten this conversation.

I've read your posts for about 2 years now and they make for an entertaining read, but you, like everyone else on every blog over the last few days are caught up in the preseason tease, it's meaningless. The sky is falling! The Bears are doomed! To say your never wrong, hitman, is dumb and pompous. You, Me or noone else on this blog knows whats gonna happen til the games are played, predict all you want. But I'm gonna tell you when your wrong.

man, why is everyone so down on the bears after only 1 preseason game? why don't we as fans wait until after the 1st regular season game to give an opinion. okay, hell with that, thats why we have this blog, so here's my opinion.
first off this is buffalo's 2nd game, and they're playing at home, so why wouldn't they look better? everyone is bitching about the D-line not getting any pressure on the QB. how do you expect for them to get to the QB if they only have like 2 seconds to get there? the defense done really good when they had 3 or 4 seconds to get to the QB. personally i think lovie should have had the D-backs up on the line to bump the recievers a few times to throw off there rythem, that way it would give your D time to get to the QB! the offense didnt look bad, i think the O-line needed to block a little better to give jay some more time. im gonna wait until after i see forte and olsen in the mix to give more of an opinion on the offense.

A couple of years ago, I spoke with a Marine who went to high school with Devin Hester in Florida. He said the problem he had back then was that he had difficulty reading a playbook. Maybe that's why, for the most part he returned kicks and punts in college. He's not a number 1 receiver. Maybe not a number2 or 3. I guess well see.

How can you get mad at a team who didn't do anything but play football. No gameplan. But I guess if you don't do what is expected even in preseason they will 2nd guess you. All the positive comments I agree with. I agree with you wholeheartedly this time Culzie. I even liked the way you dotted you eyes and crossed your Ts. You had great structure and left really no room to add anything else because no one else hit it on the head that well. Gold star for you young man... Didja appreciate me backing you up buddy? Anyhoo, how can you guys take what happened on the field as a barometer when they even had a backup DT returning kicks. That looks like a team that was just doing work. Who really expects the guy to return anything once it matters? I'm sorry but you guys who want to be negative waited for this moment and got it. How does a guy who beat his opponent "give up"? The only thing i'm disappointed in Hester doing is not break up the INT. All hail Ben a new kind of Hitman. Dude you've been just reading for two years? Man you should've jumped in with that foresight a LONG time ago. Honestly Ben you belong with us.

One preseason football game...that's it, one lousy preseason football game in which several starters were withheld, played very sparingly, or were either dinged up or injured (i.e. Tillman).

It would seem that if I were to drive through the streets of Chicago, I'd see thousands upon thousands out on the ledge ready to make the jump. Mercy!

Now, I grant you that the day Lovie focuses on anything other than a "cover-2" defense--as well as make halftime adjustments on both sides of the ball--will be the day when I might venture into the zone of thinking of the man as a quality defensive mind. Still, it's just one preseason game and Lovie has never been one to show his hand in any way, shape or form before the actual schedule begins. Now, that's his personality trait and I don't agree with this method, but it should at least give us cause to get back off the ledge.

I will also concede this. This is Devin Hester's "make-or-break" year. If he can't become a top-tier receiver this year, then this wide receiver experiment will have been a shameful failure. The Bears would have taken a guy from being the "best there ever was" as a returner only to become a virtual "has been" after just two years being the greatest and little else thereafter. That would be a shame. Here's hoping for the best. I'm not going to go to the ledge after one preseason game. However, it's interesting to me that Hester was a defensive back in college. Don't defensive backs have to fight for balls even more than receivers?

There are things that are cause for concern, but nothing more at this stage of the schedule.

I'd like to see Matt Jones...and Plaxico

Sweet baby jesus,
Somebody else has finally said it! There are NO #1 RECEIVERS on this team. What we have is a bunch of project receivers that couldn't get on the colts/patriots/steelers team even if someone bribed them. The bears will not go out and get an explosive receiver because that would mean they would have to PAY MONEY! That's not happening...Forte, Olson, or not this is not a balanced offense and there has been too many people running around this city thinking that just because he came that we would rival the explosiveness of the Colts and Patriots. Those owners paid alot for the offensive pieces that they have and they're not using a punt returner or Earl Bennett. This is what happens when you're STUCK ON CHEAP! Every bargain deal is great but then you wonder why Peyton and Tom have true #1 receivers. This organization will never change:THE BEARS ARE CHEAP, HAVE BEEN CHEAP, AND WILL STAY CHEAP!

I think the Bears need to re-think Hester's role on offense. I see Hester as more of a home-run, slot receiver, rather then an every down wide out. If he could make just a couple big plays a game, stretch out opposing secondaries, and focus on returning punts, I believe we could maximize his abilities. Let Cutler throw the ball to his two big receivers, Rideau & DA (you know, his suppossedly favorite targets in camp). Use Bennett as your possession guy, and then work in Forte and Olsen. The Bear's offense should be called the "KISS" offense, because they need to "keep it simple stupid"..Rather then trying to make your receivers be what they are not, try utilizing the abilities that your receivers already have.

"Still, it's just one preseason game and Lovie has never been one to show his hand in any way, shape or form before the actual schedule begins."
____________________________

He doesn't need to show his hand Gig, because they both have "Cover 2" tattooed on them. Everybody knows what's coming, so there's no need to "game plan" or adjust to the Bear's defense.

It's almost as bad as a pitcher yelling to the batter, "Yo batter! I'm coming in low and outside with an 85 mph slider."

Lovie doesn't just telegraph his punches, he puts it up on the Jumbo-Tron.

If your opponent knows that your next punch is going to be a left hook, you'll have a hard time landing it.

I would not wait to see how this season plays out before putting Hester in a different role.
Put him back where he belongs returning kicks. It was not just the TDs that made him great; it was the great field position that he gave them over and over.

Starting at your own 40 makes a world of difference compared to starting at the 20.
A defense that was attacking when they have you inside your own 20 will be on their heels when you are starting near midfield.
That is just common football knowledge.
That opens up the short passes and it lets your RB get to the line of scrimmage without 10 guys waiting to take his head off.
That is how other teams attack the Bears D so they should have gotten the hint by now.
Not only does that increase your chances of scoring points but also it keeps your own defense in good field position when you have to punt. Something that has been missing since they killed the golden goose known as Hester.
Having him on offense is fine but do it in a limited role, use him in the right situations and play him in the right position.
Right now he is being wasted as a receiver and as a return man.

Bringing in Matt Jones is a good idea and that is why it will not happen.
“We really like the guys that we have” is all you are going to get at the WR spot.
In all the years that I have been watching the NFL I have never seen a more stubborn coach than Lovie Smith.
He never addresses the situation at hand and once he starts the season the script is written in stone.

One of the worse traits you can have as a manager or coach is stubborness, and Lovie has it spilling out of his shorts pockets. That is why we will possibly be in below average limbo another year; the man sticks to his guns until he almost bleeds out, almost. I've seen it through Ozzie, Lou and Mr. Smith enough to blend an obstinate shake that would be the envy of the snottiest, spoiled brat this side of the Mississippi.

I'm sorry, but it should be 'Just win baby, just win'. Not at all costs, of course, but damn, get off the beaten horse already!

yes Ben, the Raiders will win more games than the bears...and their defense and offense will be ranked above chicago's...

you asking me to spell things out for you is a crack up....oh, and I haven't been wrong on this blog...I've been wrong before...a lot.....I called it dating...

Nope, no aneurysms from me, Hitman. Pretty easy to figure you out as the know-it-all persona. There's one or 2 in every sports blog and every sports talk radio host. You and Dan Bernstein of the Score would get along just fine. Like I said before, your act is old and annoying, not even funny at all, but whatever, the bad boy anti-Bears fan suits you just fine. Oh excuse me, I meant the anti-Jerry Angelo fan. Thanks for the clarification. It's amazing that you've even gone on dates.

Hey, Stu, don't revise that twelve wins prediction unless you revise it upward. I agree that there is a bit of a cause for concern, but Cutler was keying first on Hester and was better off when he didn't. In addition, give Buffalo a bit of credit. They are not a patsy and are likely to cause a number of teams big problems this year. I am anxious to see how Greenbay fares against them and am equally anxious to see the Bears against the Browns. I suspect they will do even better against the Browns than the Packers did.Remember, this was Buffalo's second preseson game, and there is almost always a big improvement after the llayers get their feet wet in that first confrontation.

Dude...enough with your man crush on Thomas Jones.....

seriously...its making my stomach feel all queezy!!

He wont gain over 500 yards this year.

Watch!

Culzie, lol.....Matt Jones

Married to a model, Edgar....Amazing!!!

Okay Tom Brady Hitman, whatever you say...

So since you're apparently God's gift to football knowledge, which 2 teams will fight for the Super Bowl this year? You care to at least give that prediction like you do so much about the Bears record this season or do you plan on twisting around another unanswered question directed to again with another set of your sorry "lol" "lmao" and "lalala" interjections?

well, since Tom Cable did to his assistant what I would easily and readily do to you (I really wish you'd grow that pair, btw)...I'll go with Da Raiders in the AFC and the Vikings in the NFC

and I told you Favre was coming back....look it up, chick

would you like me to send my pic to your Wife...or do you have one of those?...If so, my Wife just added.........

give her something to paper the ceiling with

lol, la la la, and lmao...and go sit down

Sure, attach whatever pic you like for whatever it's worth which is likely nothing. Ooo, ouch, back to the juevos stuff and name calling again eh? I'm really shakin Hitman or should I call you Patrick Kane now with the Tom Cable analogy?

Alright good.... I have you down for Raiders vs. Vikings in Super Bowl 2010, Bears going 6-10 or 5-11, whatever, and Kyle Orton to the Pro Bowl after this upcoming season. Man, can't wait until the end of the football season! It'll be put or shut up for you, big man. Go Bears and all hail Jerry Angelo!

I have always learned to be careful with people that come out strong like Hitman. They are usually crazy or confident. Hitman doesnt strike me as crazy. But if he is wrong, I don't know if he will be able to get a post in Edgewise (pun intended)!

We need some wagers on the line. Hitman, Bears Win and - we have to see your "I was wrong" post complete with a photo of you wearing a Pink Bears Hat. Edgar, if Hitman is right - Raiders Pink.

Thats how me and Culzie settled it concerning the Sox and Cubs. And Culzie was a man about it. He didn't welch! That is what I call INTEGRITY.

Hitman is a Raider fan so he obviously has no credibility.

Using a football game as an excuse to play dress up like KISS automatically makes you a bottom feeder in the NFL knowledge food chain.

I say, a Pink Raiders hat with a huge metal plated Raiders Logo on it...like the one Easy-E used to wear.

Who was it that first said that if you can't say something pleasant about someone, don't say anything? Perhaps most of the bloggers never heard that old adage. However, another one states that one should not hide one's light under a bushel ( no matter how dim?), so perhaps the two cancel each other out. Personally, I like Hester as a number one receiver and the newbies as well, but I would not mind seeing Harrison show up in a Bears' uniform.

Whats up with Iglesius? Is he doing anything in camp?

There are reports and twitter updates from Bears beat writers that Juaquin Iglesias has been sort of a disappointment in training camp so far. Same with Jarron Gilbert, but of course, it's still early and you never know, some guys take longer than others to develop. Iglesias did catch a TD last weekend and it looked nice actually, but then again, it was still against the third and fourth strings. The only rookie to have really stood out so far in camp and in the actual game/s is Al Afalava. Kind of sad considering he was a 6th round pick, but nice at the same time that we might have found a diamond in the rough basically out of nowhere. Overall, jury's still out for this 2009 rookie class and there are still 3 more preseason games to look at certain position battles.

Culzie - Eazy E!!!! Dying! Man you are an interesting character. Forget that guy on the Dos Eqis commercial.

Okay Stu, what do I get for being the 40th over here?

Happy B Day William...

Did I catch that you turned 60?

HOLY SMOKES...you Rant like your not a day over 40!

Edgar Bennett seems to be coming into form however after a lousy rookie year (too much to learn all at once?) with similar complaints about him lending credence to the notion that it often takes awhile for receivers. I think Iglesias will be turn out to be a fine investment for the 99th pick in the draft even if we may have to wait until next year.

Edgar Bennett? For a few minutes this past Saturday i forgot the guy's name too and said that it couldn't be true, then I remembered the Duke of Earl.. that's it Earl Bennett!! shut my mouth. If he keeps making solid plays I won't get his name wrong again. Right Gig.

I heard Vick was looking to moonlight as a mechanic at the Airport.....to make a few extra bucks....he was recently pictured with his screwdriver...right?

*Hey...at least it wasnt a dog joke!

last comment was meant for the Vick thread...oops...Culzie
