Dan McNeil is returning to WSCR-AM ("The Score") after nearly a nine-year absence.
The worst-kept secret in local sports-talk radio finally is official: Dan McNeil, cut loose by WSCR-AM (670) back in 2000, is returning to "the Score" after his long and successful run at WMVP-AM (1000) was abruptly ended in January. Starting June 15, McNeil will man the midday shift (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) as part of a lineup revamp that the Score hopes will help it rebound from a poor showing in the most recent ratings book.
Love him or loathe him, McNeil moves the needle. When my FCP predecessor Roman posted a blog item about McNeil being canned by WMVP, he got 144 responses, split pretty much down the middle. Half said they would miss Mac's irreverent outlook, his no-holds-barred interview style and his in-depth sports knowledge (especially in football and hockey); the other half said good riddance to someone they felt was an arrogant blowhard who had lost touch with his audience.
Since last fall, McNeil has been writing a weekly column for the Sun-Times. It usually gets more than its share of comments from readers -- again, half praising him, the other half heaping scorn. You can always count on Mac to get a reaction, pro or con -- look for McNeil's column every Thursday in the Bright One.
It will be interesting to see how McNeil fares in the midday slot, going up against "Waddle & Silvy" on ESPN-1000. It gives the Score a formidable lineup: The Sun-Times team of Mike Mulligan and Brian Hanley is a lively, entertaining, Chicago-oriented alternative to ESPN's "Mike and Mike in the Morning," and McNeil will provide a perfect lead-in to "Boers & Bernstein" in the afternoon, joining them for the first half-hour of the show.
So how about it, sports-talk listeners: Are you looking forward to hearing McNeil on the air again, or will this have you pushing the button for ESPN-1000? Which of the two stations has the better overall lineup and the best show? And what about Mike North and his fledgling ChicagoSportsWebio.com, which just brought former Bears Doug Buffone and Ed O'Bradovich aboard? One thing for sure: Chicago is overflowing with sports opinion on the airwaves.
Don't really care if Mac is back. Only listened to him on ESPN 1000 because I dislike B&B so much and he was the lesser of two bad shows. Just don't let him interfere with Mike Murphy...the only reason for me to tune into the Score.
it's great that danny mac is back
it is nice to listen to someone is as passonite about chicago sports as i am
I will miss Danimal (Dan Hampton) and Mike Murphy. I like Hanley and Mulligan, other than that I will be listening to ESPN 1000 - real sports talk radio instead of these jokers!!!
I have always been a fan of Dan McNeil and am glad that he is back on the sports station that he helped launch! I will miss Murph though, hopefully they can find a regular time slot for him!
Mcneil is OK. I'd rather have him 9 A to 12n. They have to keep Murph 12N to 4pm. Get rid of Boars and Bernstein. Bring in Holmes
and Hampton 4P to 7 P. Thats a winner!
I couldn't stand the mumbling rambling of the great Dan Hampton but I will TRULY miss Laurence Holmes. His contribution and sports knowledge to the mid-day show completely trumped that of Waddle and Silvy. I am very happy Dan McNeil will be on the mid-day, I hope they have a place for Holmes...As for Murph, good riddance!
Welcome back Danny Mac. The best thing about this move, which can't be considered a big surprise, is that we can finally say good bye to the interminable repetition of Mike Murphy. The world's thinnest book is the list of callers who got to stay on the air more than 5 seconds if they disagreed with him. I hope he finds a spot selling Cubs paraphernalia next to the Addison L stop.
At long last there will be some intelligent discussion on the Score.
It will be great to have Mac back but I was hoping they would take B&B off the air.
Great move. Lets get Mike North back!!!!!!!!
This is a travesty. He is gonna bump Murph out of his slot and I will never listen to the Score with Murph gone. He is the smartest sports radio host in the city.
If it means getting rid of Laurence Holmes, I think it's a mistake, but high popularity ratings and my personal tastes have rarely converged.
In a way, it was nice for awhile to hear Dan Hampton if only to show a side of him one might not ever hear about as he would meander down the lanes of other sports. Nevertheless, the next sentence he utters on the air without stammering would be his first. It grew very annoying for me personally and his meanderings proved just that--he was simply meandering--he really didn't have much to say apart from football.
I'm personally glad the Mike Murphy is leaving, but it's not because I didn't think he worked hard--he clearly did--or that he was a Cubs fan (I always thought he was fair). He just came off too much like a fan, his style was too "corny canned" for my taste, and he was not enough of an expert or master of insight for my liking. He also had that annoying nasalese voice that would sound like fingernails scraping a blackboard after a while.
Dan McNeil? He is one gigantic PRO and CON in my book with both columns pretty much evening out. Some of my PROS: hockey fan, Sox fan, knowledgeable, good vocabulary, intelligent. Some of my CONS: arrogant, acts as though he forgot where he came from, can often be a real a--hole.
All in all, I'm pretty ambivalent, but hate to see Laurence Holmes leave the landscape. Maybe they should be blaming Hampton for Holmes' timeslot not doing so well.
I like mcneil but waddle& silvy are good to. Get rid of Murphy hes a moron.
Once again I'll have to change my listening schedule due to exec's trying to justify their jobs.Mully-Hanley until 9 then over to Waddle.Hampton-Holmes had some of the best insight into Chicago sports.Hamp impressed me.Holmes was great but angered the chucklehead fans who think a regurgitated Macneil is an improvement.Being a homer and stroking the same listeners who call/email over and over.
Danny Mac is a pro. He knows the spectrum of Chicago sports better than anybody. I see a big boost in WSCR's midday ratings. Yeah he is a blowhole.....but so are the rest of them.
The only reason why I was listening to the score was because of Mike Murphy,,I wish you luck and hope to be listening to you again soon...got to go listening to espn1000....
McNeil is irrelevant. I used to listen to him on WMVP because I was so incensed by the poor quality of programming on WSCR. Boers Bernstein, and North drove me from there. I am amazed that this highly arrogant, non entertaining person can command any job in the media. He would make a great bartender until he drove the clientelle out the door. I would like to see Boers, Bernstein, and McNeil silenced. They have no talent, and they are so arrogant that they disrespect anyone that disagrees with them.
The idiot moves to another station.
Great news. Excited Danny Mac is back and equally excited that Murph and the waste of airtime is gone. Murph was HORRID for almost 2 decades. Hamp is a legend on the field, but out of his element in the s-st-stu-stud-studi-studio. Holmes should find a home on the Score still. Finally a reason mid day to turn off the satellite radio.
I don't care about McNeil being added. He's fine, but the fact that they are finally removing Murphy from the air signals the station is now conceding that more than 15% of its listeners are indeed literate.
Mike Murphy's show was an absolute abortion, and was insulting to pretty much anyone with an IQ over 85 that listened to it.
Maybe that's a bit harsh? I'm sure some baby boomers with an eighth-grade education may have average intelligence, and this was the demographic to which the show appealed. It was fraught with idiotic noises, classless, redundant and infantile marketing, and a childish acerbity and impatience from its host. Many of the topics of discussion were obviously latently racist, and often were drummed up to be controversial to those who couldn't see through their transparent artificiality.
Murphy is palpably disingenuous, and his radio voice is the worst this side of NY's Mad Dog. I truly hope he never lands another full time job in mainstream media.
P.S. Keep Holmes on full time somewhere, and NEVER let the inbred Hampton near a microphone again.
I don't really care one way or the other.
Mike Murphy was really hard to listen too. It was sitting next to some weirdo in the bleachers who would not shut up.
Dan Bernstein has become the new Jay Marrioti. Just an obnoxious know it all while his half dead partner just rambles on about who the hell knows what. They were entertaining for about 5 minutes and that was years ago.
I do like Jason Goff. Give him more air time.
I will miss Doug Buffone a lot.
His Bears post game show with Ed O'Bradovich was the best sports show on radio. They made a Bears lose easy to swallow because they could voice what the rest of us were thinking and their rants were dead on. They know the game and they are Bears fans who actually care.
Can't wait to hear Danny Mac. Should be interesting.
As far as Holmes and Hampton? Holmes is a great Bears reporter and Hampton will be great doing the Bears post-game show. As a show host, Laurence felt the need to insert personal stories throughout the show, which is O.K. if they are funny or entertaining. Also the "Bernstein Jr." shtick wore pretty thin. Way too contrived, always seemed to try to force bits that weren't real funny to begin with. Hampton is what he is, an ex-football player who should be commenting only on football.
And Murph? Good riddance. It's amazing that you could see how thin Murph's skin was even through the radio. From the blowup with Mully to the ongoing feud with B&B, he just doesn't seem to get it. But what do you expect from "Out of step Charlie"? I'm sure the meatball contingent will be upset about losing their mustachioed leader, but they will survive.
Nothing but an arrogant condescending jerk and he fits right in before the Bore and Weekend with Bernie show. Other than White Sox games, there is no reason to listen to the Score any longer.
I'm convinced that me and three of my hairy buddies could do a better job talking sports than the donkey keysters that are now going to be braying on WSCR.
All the changes the score the score makes means they are trailing. Fire no penis Mitch
anything is better than harry and silvy who don't know anything ab out sports except for harry whose dad is buddies with reinsdorf which is far as that can go. he should stick to betting on horses instead of looking and sounding like a horses ass!
Things keep changing. I haven't listened to McNeil yet but am looking forward to trying him.
As for losing Hamp and Holmes, Hamp will be missed. Holmes won't. He's been listening to Bernstein too much in planing his radio career. Holmes went from a decent knowledgeable sports voice, to an abrasive smart ass. That change reminds me too much of Boers and Bernstein. They've been a garbage mouthed, condescending, alienating show and now they have another hour? What gives? I haven't been listening in the afternoon for a long time now anyway so, so what I guess. Hamp isn't smooth but Buffone isn't smooth on the air either, but they both have a lot to say. When will I get to hear it now? As for Murph, he is old time sports radio. I am ready for a change there though. Good luck Murph. I'm looking forward to the day that B & B are gone. They are just too good for Chicago. Go to New York or anywhere, soon.
Bores and Bernsteinberg are "Beavis and Butthead". I can't believe they're still on the air. Mully and Hanley are the best hours on sports radio. Sorry to see Murph go. He emphasizes the facts and stats, not just opinions. I'll listen to Dennis Miller on 560 after Mully and Hanley.
Please...if there is a God...get rid of Ronge. His depth of baseball knowledge is paper thin. He's an idiot. Can't stand listening to the post game (or pre game) with that complete moron.
Oh, and MacNeil....he's an arrogant, pompous a**. I was elated he left WMVP. They've never sounded better without his crying and pouting. He needs to stay on his medications.
I like listening to Danny Mac, but I will greatly miss Mike Murphy. Yet another intelligent and class act (Les Grobstein was the first) to be pushed off the Score. Sad.
Since we're mentioning the other Score personalities, I can't stand Boers and Bernstein. They are condescending and disrespectful to their listeners and callers. If you don't 100 percent agree, they make fun of you and call you a moron. IF you agree completely, they can't wait to label you a genius.
This is a bad move by the score who had narrowed down their unlistenable stuuf to boers and bernstein. I had written off the score long ago until they dumped North and added Holmes and Hamp. Mac is an arrogant putz of very average intelligence who rarely offers any real insight into one of our local teams. Lots of hot air bravado from him which doesnt cut it for my listening pleasure. He was barely listenable to for awhile on espn radio then before he got fired fell back into his hyper negative dog manure mode.
Murph will not be missed by many. He lost me as a listener one day when he stated that Shawon Dunston was not a good defensive shortstop and should have been playing center field; just look at his fielding % and range factor and you'd know for certain that Dunston was a top-flight defender.
Who? Some guy that can't keep a job and people soon grow tired of? Well great.
This whitesox radio station keeps driving off it's loyal listeners, must be hard keeping Reinsdorf happy.
Hanley and Mulligan have voices made for newspapers, they are raw, broadcasters with little to no talent, unless you count braying. They should stick to writing, or maybe they don't expect to be long employed there.
Danimal and holmes were also inexperienced but Larry actually had some talent, ahd Hamp is an icon. Wonder how danimal ticked off Reinsdorf, oh yeah bashing bulls player Deng's character. Strong stance but wrong target, seems a more recent high draft choice may have other character issues, like cheating.
Losing Buffone and OB dammit, is the biggest lose and the sin that will sink the current score program director. Talk about icons and popular broadcasters? Now the score will be left with the mealy mouthed, spineless one, the hubster.
Murphy was a hit or miss host but for cubs fans he always delivered. He and Fred carried the Score for awhile in the morning hours, now the station is really going to sink like a stone, the current morning team are way way far from grabbing listeners.
Wmvp must be laughing all day and all night on this lineup. Maybe boers will make some funny noises and save the day.
It's funny how Danny Mac used to rip on AM670 when he was with his buddies on AM1000. That show always had something to it that made listeners stay tuned in except for Danny never passing up the opportunity to bite the hand that once fed him and now will feed him again.
Here's hoping he has at least just a little class to keep his derogatory AM1000 comments to himself this time and concentrate on being the best sports guy on ChiTown radio at 9-1. He'll be challenged though as the guys on AM1000 in that time slot have established themselves and are rather cohesive.
I look forward to his coverage of the Blackhawks and hope he can come up with some new version of his Cubs vs Sox bets like years past on AM1000.
They really need to get rid of Ed Farmer, who in a 2003 broadcast made fun of retarded children, and apologized for this incident the next day on the air. This went under the RADAR, but I will never forget
This will be short lived. Dan McNeil is certified garbage who is a poor man's Jay Mariotti. He lives to make comments that make people mad and doesn't use his head too often when talking sports. What a sad state of affairs that this guy gets to talk sports on the air for 4 hours a day. I could find a trained monkey to do better.
I'm amazed that so many claiming low or average intelligence on the part of various sports talk hosts, cannot themselves properly structure a sentence!
Hey, great, another HYPOCRITE has bounced back to the station from once he came. How is McNeil going to retract all the vitriol and hate he spewed when he was let go by the SCORE. Let me guess, he'll chalk it up to a program director he didn't get along with. Guess you can overcome all that hate and loathing when you're not getting a steady paycheck. What a joke.
I'll miss Dan Hampton on the air; especially am athlete's take on professional sports.Lawerence Holmes was a good broadcasting partner for him. These two I think gave a honest take on the chicago sprts scene. I do like Danny Mac though and you can't beat no more John DuJuan on the radio; woot!
So much love for Murph, WTF?! so glad to see him go. I've never heard a talk show host ask so many 3 minute questions and get 1 word responses back. HORRIBLE! Danny Mac at least tells it like it is and will be a perfect segue into the Boers and Bernstein show, which is 1000 times better than Carmen, Harry and Jurko.
B&B are the ones that need to go. Mack is a knowledgable host, but his ego has to be kept in place. Is the radio field really this thin? The man didn't even get a chance to really taste unemployment. A hiring this soon might make him feel like he was right, and doesn't need to change. We need to be reminded of why he was fired from ESPN 1000. And more importantly - he needs to be reminded.
This is great. Now I can listen all day instead of switching the dial from noon to two. I hope McNeil brings in a little more sports talk from slightly more national scope.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of McNeil. Include me to many of those who feel that his head has gotten too big to be likable anymore, but I understand he still has his legion of followers who enjoy his style and will probably be fine for the Score in his planned time slot. Mike Murphy is a "nice" guy, but too old school and just not confrontational enough to some of the more (and I'll say this nicely) "questionable" callers to the show who deserve to be talked down to sometimes. Hampton is just not a good enough radio personality. Lawrence Holmes is ok, but a bit "nerdy" if that makes any sense. Boers & Bernstein - can't stand them. Their arrogance and silliness is way off the charts for my tastes as well. I like Jason Goff, he needs more air time, and Mully and Hanley are fine in the morning while I take my long morning rush hour drives to work. Buffone and O'Bradovich are the best in the business for post-game Bears talk. Good luck to the Score and ESPN though. I tune them both in when I can since I like the flexibility of having to choose more than 1 sports station depending on the topics discussed.
Thank goodness The Score is doing something about that dead air that they have been dealing with from noon to 2. Welcome back Danny Mac!!
Dan Mac stated on his last day he wouldn't get out of Bed for less then $250,000, the Score is definetly overpaying.
Give him about two weeks before he starts attacking Jurko, Harry and Silvi.
I am interested in Sports not vindettas.
The one thing about Mac is that he's pretty much the only Chicago sports talker who actually goes to the games. He was always talking about his experiences, and it adds an authenticity to his commentary. Although, I think Waddle is just too good.
This is bull, Macneil is the worst, and who can stand his voice. All he does is talk about himself, looks like AM1000 will be where I'm going. Thanks for nothing.
Here is my lineup that I listen to every day:
Mike and Mike in the Morning - Best show on sports radio!
Hamp and Holmes - Lawrence did a great job, If you could get Waddle and Holmes, now that would be a show!
The afternoon saloon - I can't stand Carmen, this used to be my favorite show until Mac left, However, the B and B show is AWFUL.
I want a show that is informative and entertaining.
Good riddance to Murph, Hampton and hopefully B and B, Carmen and Silvy.
Welcome back Mac! Not only is Da Ma Ne back, but I won't have to listen to Laurence Holmes on a daily basis anymore either!
Can't listen to sports radio during the afternoon anyway. But when are they going to realize that B&B are TERRIBLE????
If you want a real winner, put Danny Mac along with Chester Coppick in the afternoons and they'll have more people listening to the score than they'll know what to do with........
That would be must-hear talk radio.
As it stands now, their morning show is fantastic. Those guys stay on topic and talk sport. B&B are so arrogant, I don't even bother listening anymore - even if there's a huge story that came out. Thats how useless those two are.
They don't talk sports. The premise of their entire show is to debate how smart they are compared to everyone else - the callers, the GM's in town, the players, the owners. They'd rather debate that more than they'd actually like to talk to x's and o's about the local teams.
Bringing McNeil back is a bad idea, there was a reason that ESPN decided not to bring him back. He constantly fights and argues with
co-workers and insults fans, players and other media members.
The reason the score let him go the last time was because of
an off air dispute with a co-worker, he is a bad guy and an embarrassment to Chicago sports radio.
Zack Zaidman is another guy that can go.
When he is not sucking up to the players and making excuses for them then he is talking down to the callers because they call him out on his stupidity.
He actually believes that because he rubs elbows with the Bears then he and Lovie Smith are the only two people on the face of the Earth who understand what the responsibility of the Safety is in the Cover-2 defense.
Hub Arkush is another bitter know it all that can disappear while you are at it.
Boers & Bernstein are the most arrogant guys on radio.
They are also the most negative.
I don't want to hear a rah rah homer type of guy but they try to throw a dark cloud on every single positive that comes along.
*Bears going to the Super Bowl? Rant and rave about how bad they are until they actually lose in the big game and they ramble on about how “I told you so!”
*Bulls sweep the Heat? Nothing but luck and the wheels will come off soon enough!
*The Illini are playing in the NCAA Finals? Just smoke and mirrors and let me tell you my long list of things that they do not do well.
Brow beating, pompous, I am better than you are dolts.
What a depressing way to be in life.
I for one am happy that Danny Mac is back! After he was forced off MJH, I switched over to the Score full time. The afternoon saloon is horribly boring without him.
Now that Hamp and Holmes are gone, the Score has a far superior radio lineup than WMVP. B&B are hilarious in the afternoon, and I hope they find a place for Murph afterward. He's an oddball, but for some reason I like him.
I will give Mac a chance. I couldn't stand his show on ESPN because Jurcko and Harry are just plain BAD. The B&B show is the best program in Chicago--damn funny. They are smart, insighful and damn funny. Yes I said smart. Terry knows excatly what he's doing and thankfully neither have a problem telling people the TRUTH about Chicago sports.
This is a great move. Mully and Hanley are serviceable in the mornings. Danny Mac did carry ESPN's afternoon show. The show is pretty awful to listen to now. Carmen has a bright future but can't carry the dead weight. Danny Mac should be great for mornings/afternoon. I'm looking forward to the transitions with B&B. They should provide some priceless radio together. B&B are by far the best show in the City. The meatheads are usually the ones that can't stand them. I guess not everybody is able to formulate an opinion without defaulting to "come on" or "just because."
Mike, I gotta agree with you 100% about Bernstein & Boers. For those who are fans with these 2 clowns, I'd like for them to speak up and say exactly WHY because apparently plenty are listening or else their ratings segment would have been a concern by now. Maybe once a month, I'll tune in just to see if they've changed their tune over the air somewhat, but they just seem to get worse every time. I remembered the time when the Bears first announced about the Jay Cutler trade and by the time I wanted to get a chance to hear about the news on radio and turned on B&B, all I listened to was 15 minutes of back-and-forth obnoxiousness about a Clint Eastwood movie. Never again with those guys and then they get an extra hour on the air? Sorry Score, you just lost another afternoon listener for now.
Danny Mac is back that is very good. Welcome Back Dan McNeal!
Listening to Terry Boers trying to complete one single sentence is like having a root canal.
"And I just want to say.... ahhhh...ahhh... ahhh. No! No! No!"
While his punk sidekick snickers in the background.
At least he got his name right because that is exactly what he does.
I agree with those who believe that B & B would be better served owning and operating a B & B. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Dan Bernstein, with the right attitude, could be one of the finest "thinking sports fan's" entertainers in America. Instead, he's reduced himself to the juvenile, sexual innuendo-indulged, asanine, ways and means of Terry Boers (who is himself a highly intelligent man, but that's his form of entertainment).
Together, they are ultra-arrogant and condescending waiting on their collective precipices like Hawks ready to prey upon the next dolt or even semi-dolt caller so that, like a band of junior or senior high school bullies, they can make good fun of that person thereby creating hystrionic laughter aplenty at the caller's expense. Funny thing, I routinely teach a bunch of boys that could do the same thing at the drop of a hat. Way to get the most out of your talents "gentlemen."
After once making such references concerning B & B, someone replied, "Gig, it's about cracking up. You just don't get it." O.K. you know, I guess I just put that behavior behind me pretty much when I graduated high school. You're right. I don't get it because I guess I chose to mature a little bit which includes treating others with a at least a modicum of respect.
I've heard Dan Bernstein do solo shows, even a number when he isn't around Boers or having to continue in that same production mode. At those times, he's brilliant! He's respectful of the caller first of all. Then, he creates these highly entertaining, sardonic, and thought-provoking images. For example, I recall how he had an "altar" erected to the almighty Calderon (Ivan Calderon, RIP). The images he would relate about his ongoing worship pilgrimmages to this altar and the man of necklaces and hairdo left me in stitches. Dan has that ability. I believe his talents are being wasted.
I don't listen to talk radio because I'm a music while I drive kind of guy but I have to comment on Doug's post...I've never laughed so loud sitting at my computer. Thanks for the $#its abd giggles. Everyone else, thanks for letting me know what I'm missing or may not be missing.
Doug,
WRD's latest post caused me to check on what you'd said. I had read it, but not like now. Great stuff...Phil Collins would be proud. LOL
Incidentally, I also wanted to give yet another "shout out" to Doug Buffone. He truly is "Uncle Doug." I love his personality and his sense of humor. Moreover, he along with OB, help me get through Bears losses. I think I might pay to hear him after a Bears loss--the worse the loss, the better he is. Priceless!
I'm fairly indifferent but if I had to choose I'd say I'm happy he's back. What I'd really like to see is Boers and Bernstein dropped from the line up. I usually agree w/their opinions, but they are such pri**s that I find them very hard to listen to. I'd like to see Lawrence Holmes get their slot. Also not overly bummed Mike Murphy is outtie. Finally, I do my best to avoid Mike North at all costs.
Why does Chicago put up with such horrible sports talk radio? There isn't one locally produced show that gives listeners what they want. Every show is the same - slam Chicago teams and players. They all play up the pessimistic fan role to the hilt. The sky is falling and we're doomed. What fun is that day after day? Mully & Hanly should stick with print, very hard to listen to Mully try to finish a point. Laurence Holmes laughing at the listeners when he was speaking got old quick. Hampton's speech impediment doesn't allow him to speak a coherent sentence. Mike Murphy, while offering a heavy dose of Cubs, did the same boring show everyday. Dan Bernstein is obviously the most talented but when paired with Terry Boers, there show comes off as old guys going back through puberty. Boers is unlistenable.
WMVP is not much better. Mike & Mike is a winner, but Waddle & Silvy is as vanilla as it gets. The Afternoon Saloon is decent but was better with Danny Mac. That was the best show in Chicago, not great by any means, but the best of what was offered.
I'm looking forward to McNeil's new show - I'll give it a listen. Dan, when humble, is as good as it gets in Chicago. Just, please, never bring back Mike North to radio! Taking the contrarion position on every topic might taught in talk radio school, but listeners want knowledgable hosts who mix humor in sparlingly with straight forward talk about the teams we love. We strive to hear more in depth analysis. We're tuning into a sports talk show because of our need for our sports fix - not to hear your funny sounds and schtick.
I am happy D-Mac is back, thought honestly I don't know where he is at after 8 years (I can't get AM1000 where I live, so happy that the Sox switched to 670).
Having said that, I am sorry to see Murph go (if he is gone, hopefully he will move to a new slot). For those who say he appealed to the LCD, STFU - he brought stats backed knowledge, an understanding of the game, and an (biased, so what?) insightful view to Chicago sports. Yes, he evokes old time radio, Yes, he has a voice fit for the Sears catalog, and Yes, he has proven to be impatient over the years - BUT, he brings a passion matched with insight that is unrivaled in the locker room (read arrogant and blantly homophobic/staunchly anti-rascist and indigestably arrogant) bash-first0culture that is the Chicago sports talk scene (see specifically Bernstein and Boers).
B&B's obvious and blatant hatred of homosexuals makes me sick, and the flip-side 'we are progressive, we hate rascists' posturing is infuriating. Something tells me that if our society was 50 years younger we would be hearing '[racial slur]' instead of Homer's 'gay' whenever B&B thought something was stupid, and Boers would be going on and on about how X picture of Y radio personality was the absolute worst because he looked 'black/hispanic/asian/et cetera' instead of 'gay'..

what's the over-under before Mac hooks up w/chicagosportswebio.com? :))
I only listend to wscr from 12-2 weekdays....I'll give Mac a few listens, but most likely its time to just keep it on 1000 here on out.
This guy was FIRED at the TOP of his game, from the #1 sports show in this town. Everytime there is a thread about him it goes up to 100. Do ANY of you guys know why a guy at the top of his game and clearly the best of the 3 hosts at the time got fired? He had to REALLY do something bad. ESPN fired their TOP radio stud and nobody really knows why??? Hmmmmmmm.... Just asking.
One step forward with the rehiring of Dan McNeil
Two steps backward with the termination of Mike Murphy
Keith: Mac didn't do anything particularly bad, and he did not get fired.
The show had dipped in the ratings, the economy was in mid "tank", and they chose not to renew his contract.
It's as simple as that.
He was making around $600,000 at the time and would have no doubt asked for a raise on his next deal. The numbers just didn't add up for WMVP, and that's all there is to it.
I'm sure that the feather's he ruffled during his tenure didn't help his cause, but I don't believe that any felonius actions on Mac's part were responsible for his departure from the station.
But you're a big conspiracy theorist, so I can understand why you think that there was another shooter on the grassy knoll.
Villy - are you sure? You sound very certain. ESPN - thrifty? Didn't they just hire Roman? I didn't think the man's actions were felonious, but if we are going to give him and entire blog about his departure and now new found employment, don't you think we should know a little more??? Hey, just asking.
I'm excited to have McNeil if only because it means that the cheese ball doofas that's on from 12 - 2 will be gone. I hope the "new job" they offer Murph will be cleaning the bathrooms. I think it would suit his talents well. I like every other show on the score and espn and hope that Holmes finds success back at 6:00.
Villy??? Anyone??? I guess only the Athletes deserves to be openly skewered.
Keith, the bottom line here also is that the general public will never know the entire truth behind ESPN releasing McNeil from his contract. McNeil’s contract with ESPN had an option clause and they basically made a BUSINESS decision to not pick up the option. There was never an explanation provided from the Executives of the show other than a prepared statement to the press. It’s possible that the decision may have been a cumulative effect of controversy, past suspensions and other run-in factors with guests on the show, but that was never explained. Keith, no matter how big a company is, it doesn’t matter. That final option year in McNeil’s contract was reportedly worth in excess of $600k. That’s a big chunk of change for a radio jock, my friend. In my opinion, it’s almost always about the money, especially in the sports industry, until someone starts messing around with a public relations nightmare that may cause irrepairable damage to a company’s image and reputation, which of course… leads to more millions of dollar losses. It's just "business", Keith, nothing more. I'm just glad McNeil isn't African-American or else you and Culzie would just continue your back-and-forth Social Studies lectures in this blog thread, god forbid. ;-)
Edgar thanks for the effort. The truth is out there. And I KNOW some of it. The first day Jurk and Harry had a show without him a nice portion of it came across the airwaves - and a lot of posters mentioned some of the controversy surrounding Mack on the first thread. But since there was this follow-up of the man I thought we would hear some of it, but nothing. Say what you won't Edgar - NOBODY gets rid of a top performer on a #1 Show without a good reason - and MONEY is never the reason. Even the Bulls paid Michael Jordan, and you don't get any cheaper than Reinsdorf. Now where are the dumpster-diving to-hell-with-ethics reporters/sport's writers when you need one? My fault - THEY ARE ALL COVERING THE ATHLETES!!! Chicago Bears 85 Secondary couldn't cover that well.
Glad Mac is back on the air although and I don't think to much about his partner, Matt, who just doesn't speak naturally. Haven't pinpointed it yet but sounds like he's been practicing too hard for voice-over work. The Score should recruit Jurko from ESPN.
