Sun-Times online columnist Neil Hayes wrote an open letter to Bears general manager Jerry Angelo today.

In the wake of the news that the New York Jets have contacted the Broncos regarding Cutler, Neil pleads with Angelo to do whatever he can to get the young quarterback.

Write your letter to Angelo here, and there's a chance he'll see it.

It can be about Cutler or anything else. The only requirement is there is no profanity or personal attack.

And remember: it's possible - I would say probable - that Angelo has called the Broncos to inquire about Cutler. The Bears just may not have enough to offer in return.

Mr. Angelo -

There is a potential possibility that you could acquire Jay Cutler from the Broncos. You may say that you already have Kyle Orton, but he's is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and has not proven consistency in his short career. In addition, you have not acquired a solid backup. With Orton's health concerns, it would make sense to have a reliable proven young quarterback to guide your team back to the Super Bowl.

What about Kyle Orton's confidence in the team if you were to bring in Cutler? If Kyle is out to prove himself as a NFL quarterback, then the challenge of competition should further drive him to prove he is the starting quarterback for the Bears for today and beyond.

I know this is tough decision to make, but a man in your position should know that when an opportunity presents itself, you should not hesitate to act on it.

Dear Jerry,

All you have to do is to back up the statements you made to the press about the Quarterback position, period. If it truly all starts with the quarterback, then do what it takes to get Jay Cutler if he's available in the trade market. If you don't at least try, then you'll forever be ridiculed for that press conference just like Lovie's famous "Rex is our Quarterback." punchline. This is as simple as it gets, start with the quarterback first and then rebuild from there. The Cutler detractors will always be there, but the majority of fans and local media want him here. Just do it!

Mr Angelo -

You're an awful general manager. Can we trade you for Chris Harris?

Jerry,

I understand that in your defense, there is a belief that Kyle Orton is the quarterback of the future. I was a firm believer in Rex Grossman and believe that this team(including yourself) gave up on him too early. I understand the game of football as I have played it all my life, and it's easy for Bear fans to throw their blame on Rex or whoever, but to say that Kyle Orton is better than Jay Cutler is wrong! And to me that is what you are implying with your strongarmed approach at not even looking at Cutler.

I strongly encourage you to go out and get him. I'm sick of seeing this team not doing what is necessary. Get Jay Cutler

Hey Mr. Angelo You said yourself that wide receivers really don't make that much of a difference and that it all starts with the QB. Think of what getting Jay Cutler for quarterback for our team would mean a star for once. Sure there is a chance kyle could be decent, but there also a possibility he could be just another guy. Why hope and pray that the search for the next QB could be over why not be sure. We as bears vans deserve this, we do love bragging about our run game and our furious defense but we would love talking about our passing game for once. You could have someone
behind center for next 10 years. Who knows if you make a move and get him and he some how takes us to the playoffs maybe management won't have to clean house and you'll all keep your jobs.

Jerry, this organization year after year consistently has problems with one of the most important postions in football. If we had a chance to get a pro bowl calibar QB in his prime, we should do everything posible to try and make that happen. The bears fans would be so excited, so happy about the next several seasons. It would give us some real hope. please if there is any chance do this for the fans. we are always faithful to this team and always will be reagardless of whether we have a good QB. please give us something for all that faith. as the reporter said if it fails I will not get angry at you. I will be happy for you trying to make our team better.

Dear Jerry,
The time has come where you have worn your welcome and the welcome of everyone on you staff including your head coach Lovie Smith. You have passed on so many trades and free agents that it almost seems to Bears fans the you have no interest in winning a super bowl or any thing close to it.For you to pass on this Jay Cutler is just another example of you not making a move to better the team you control. As a Bears fan I'm still upset that you would not risign the only true #1 receiver we had in Bernard Berrian and trading Thomas Jones away not yet knowing what we had in Matt Forte. So if you and your staff would like to join the rest of us in the unemployment line just simply continue what you doing and keep a blind eye to the fans. But if you would like to deliver on all the promises you and your people have made in your time with the Bears look outside the box and start making some moves for some real talent hint Jay Cutler. thankyou for you time
A Very Concerned Fan

Dear Jerry Angelo

I imagine that right now, you're feeling a bit like Alice. Hmm? Tumbling down the rabbit hole?
You can see it in your eyes. You have the look of a man who accepts what he sees because he is expecting to wake up. Ironically, that's not far from the truth.

Do you believe in fate, Angelo? Maybe you don't. Because you don't like the idea that your not in control of your life. I know *exactly* what you mean. Let me tell you why you're here. You're here because you know something . What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the Bears. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad. It is this feeling that has brought you to this point. Do you know what I'm talking about? The Quaterback Angelo, it's starts with the Quarterback.

Even now, in the very room you sit in. You can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work... when you go to church... when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.

Try to free your mind, Angelo. A person can only show you the door. You're the one that has to walk through it. Do you really believe Orton is the answer?

If real is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain. Angelo, sooner or later you're going to realize just as we all do that there's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.

This is your last chance to change the Bears fate. After this, there is no turning back. You stay with Orton - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take Cutler - you stay in Wonderland and he shows you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.

Dear Jerry,

This letter is like writing a letter to Benito Mussolini. You're both Italian. You're both stubborn to a fault. You're both about as good as dead at whatever it is that you do. Moreover, neither of you will bother to read it.

Fantasy being what it is, please honor your own words--if they mean anything to you--and go after someone who can take the Bears to the next level perennially. Maybe it's not Jay Cutler although I think he's better than Kyle Orton. Whomever it is, please so something that makes a splash.

I think anyone who knows football could have done a better job drafting than you have with this organization.

P.S. For an example of what a good G.M. does, please look no further than the Halas library for the accomplishments of a man by the name of Jim Finks.

Dear Jerry,

If you don't go after Jay Cutler could you at least give us an explanation?

Hint: Please don't say Kyle is our guy

Dear Mr. Angelo,

I obviously don't know what it's like to be a General Manager. I won't pretend to know how to tell your to do your job as I was taught common sense and manners. I will simply say this, how excited do you think the Bears' fans would be if Cutler was throwing to Devin Hester? I'd like to also point out that I am aware we may never know if you did go after Cutler; this is probably a good idea for the sake of team unity and Orton's confidence. Regardless of that, please make a run for Cutler.

COME ON JERRY ! GET THAT DAM GRIN OFF YOUYR FACE & GRAB YOUR MARBLES & GO AFTER CUTLER !!!!!! FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!! HE WANTS TO PLAY IN CHICAGO SO MAKE IT HAPPEN CAPTIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Jerry,

You are on the hot-seat! Early in your GM career you made at least two errors with regards to free agency: you forgot to check a square to prevent certain players from leaving without draft compensation. You have failed miserably drafting in the first round, if not first two rounds, each year. You have done a serviceable job keeping our best talent in the fold. You made the correct call this off-season by telling the world that it high time the Bears organization gets it priorities straight, and get a franchise quarterback. Just when it seemed that Byron Leftwich was your best alternative to an injured Orton along came Jay Cutler's anger against his new coach. You laid down the groundwork. You laid down the principle, by admitting to the world that a franchise quarterback is key to a NFL team's success. So now let's see you live by your own words. Let's see you live up to your own principles. Otherwise, I do not see you employed with this organization past next season. You have proven to be a mediocre GM. Time now to prove you are above your peers. If Cutler fails, if Cutler gets injured and the Bears must rely on a third-stringer, WE WILL ALL FORGIVE YOU, because at least you made the extraordinary effort. Extraordinary efforts do not equate with mediocrity. Prove to the world, let alone Bears fans, that you are not mediocre.

Dear Mr. Angelo,

The quarterback position is the most important on the field. You have intimated as much by your own words. You have gone on record as subscribing to the belief that the quarterback makes the receivers, makes the line, makes the backs play better. You currently have a roster with an unsettled offensive line, a very slim and unproven receiving corps., good tight ends and at least one very good running back. In short, what you have assembled is not good enough to carry a sub-par quarterback. If you are correct, then a great quarterback will be required to make your offensive roster into an NFL-caliber unit.

Much has been made of the quarterback merry-go-round that has plagued the Bears for, well, decades. Part of the problem has been that the Bears often employed quarterbacks who were aged, limited physically, limited in their ability to make decisions, or were simply overmatched by the NFL. On top of that, the list of retreads and never-weres that took snaps for the Bears all felt the need to overcome their limits to be the savior of a QB-starved franchise.

The Bears' QB situation is probably too much for a rookie to handle. The Bears QB situation is too dire for a veteran to recapture old glory or try and restart a fizzling career. What the Bears need to succeed is a QB who still has the physical tools and the confidence of having succeeded in the NFL. Jay Cutler is the prime example.

Jay Cutler has been to a pro bowl. Jay Cutler's best years are yet to come. He has rare physical abilities on the field, and doesn't need to question whether he has any good seasons left or whether the pro game is too fast. Jay Cutler is the answer to a very old problem in Chicago.

But you know that. You know the league and the players. Jay Cutler isn't a secret. Lots of teams would be better with him than their current starting QB. The Bears are included, all due respect to Kyle Orton and neckbeard nation.

Kyle Orton isn't bad. But the Bears have had "not bad". It didn't last. Jim Miller wasn't bad, but a bad offensive line caused him to take hit after hit until he was too hurt to be a starter. Erik Kramer, same thing. Jim Harbaugh wasn't bad but his receivers often failed him and the line made him more runner than passer.

Its time to try something different. Bears draft choices have flopped under the pressure...Rex...Cade...and the best and brightest QBs are often off the draft board by the time the 8-8 to champ teams pick. You could sign Byron Leftwich and see if he's any better than he was in Jacksonville, but don't we know that answer? Jeff Garcia is available, but old, small and weak armed have played here too and gone nowhere. Your choices remain retreads, rookies, low-grade prospects and one pro bowl QB.

If you are right and a great QB can make weak offensive players better, then you have to go out and get a great QB. Jay Cutler may not be the greatest in the league, but he's in the conversation with the league's best. No other option open to the Bears now, or likely in the near future, is in that conversation.

Make it happen Mr. Angelo. Bring us the QB we've needed. Give the fans a jersey to buy that isn't a middle linebacker. Give Devin Hester the guy that makes him a lethal WR. Give Matt Forte a break.

And if you do get Jay Cutler, and he turns into another crappy Bears QB, at least we'll know we're doomed for reasons beyond those explained in this world.

A curse can be accepted; failure to act cannot.

Please Jerry, get this done.

We need a Franchise Quarterback here in Chicago, there is one available just DO IT and get him ! NO MORE EXCUSES! Enough said.

Dear Jerry:

I realize that your experience in Tampa showed that it is possible to win a Super Bowl with a flawed offense. This strategy was similarly repeated in Baltimore. Unfortunately, those teams are the exception rather than the rule in the modern NFL. Successful teams usually win with balance. The Bears, as presently constituted, spend a greater share of team salary on defense than any other team in the league. This imbalance must be corrected if the Bears are to be anything but an anomaly.

You correctly have labelled the quarterback position as being the most important on the field. Kyle Orton is, at best, an average quarterback. I agree with you, we need to upgrade that position. Jay Cutler would constitute an immediate upgrade. Now, it's simply a matter of putting together a package that would compensate Denver fairly for their quarterback. I believe that the Broncos have the right to expect a Pro-Bowl player for their own Pro-Bowler.

You can restore balance to the Bears' salary structure by sending Tommy Harris to the Broncos. I realize that he is a very good player, but the Broncos aren't going to give Cutler away for nothing. Furthermore, given Tommy's history of knee problems, I would submit that Cutler will be playing longer as a franchise quarterback than Tommy will be playing as a franchise Defensive Tackle.

Should the Broncos demand even more for Cutler, you might consider packaging an aging Brian Urlacher and asking that emerging wide receiver Eddie Royal be included in a block-buster deal. I do not think that the Bears should send any draft choices to Denver. Such a strategy mortgages the future and reduces the team's flexibility to fill holes.

The Bears are a founding franchise of the NFL, and its fans are the most loyal. We deserve to have a team that we can be proud of!

Mr. Angelo-

I do not claim to know how tough and stress filled your job is. I do not claim to know what it takes to run an NFL Football team. But what I do know, whether it is football or Business, the person in charge should have the responsibility to its consumers to provide the Best product available and have a committment to excellence. Unfortunately, the product that is the Bears in NOT excellent nor is it the Best Product Available.

Signing Jay Cutler would be monumental for Bears fans. He is the type of person that would make EVERY player on the Bears better. Matt Forte could be more efficient by not haveing to produce 60% of the Bears offense. Devin Hester could count on running a fly pattern and actually being able to catch the ball thats thrown to him. Even the whole Defense would benefit by having an offense leader that could move the sticks rather than going three and out! Shoot, i think the punter and Robbie Gould would even benefit from having Cutler around, which means you, Lovie and the whole staff look better as well.

Please please please please give us something to look forward to and get excited about this season.

Mr. Angelo,

Please don't listen to these Fantasy Football Addicts. Just 2 full seasons ago, we were on the brink of an NFL Championship. Cutler and the Broncos haven't sniffed the playoffs. I think we have one of the best talent evaluating teams in the league. I liked Kyle Orton from Day 1 and once he become's successful it will re-illustrate the Blueprint for developing a QB in the NFL. The Peyton Mannings (starters from day 1) are rare and hard to find for 31 teams in the NFL. I'd like you to focus on the Offensive and Defensive lines then work your way over to the WRs. The coaching is fine and the scheme is set. Believe in your picks, your players and your coaches and you'll see yourself deep in the post-season again.

Cutler: Change we can believe in. At least try. Please.

Dr. Mr. Angelo,

I am a die hard Broncos fan who has watched every pass Jay Cutler has thrown in Orange and Blue. Moreover I am a football fan who has watched the Bears struggle through poor offensive talent and schemes over the past decade or more. I honestly believe that Jay is the third most talented quarterback in the NFL already and no price would be too high. This would make the Bears a Super Bowl contender tomorrow and rid the Broncos of a terrible situation. Neil is right, the price will be four players, two first round picks and two players. But the value will come in the form of two or more Super Bowl rings in the next 12 years.

So called "experts" equate this trade to the Jeff George trade of 1994 but to me it is closer to the Shaq and Kobe split up in 2003. How did the Miami Heat do after giving up too much? World Champions. How are the Lakers doing now? Best in the league. Rid us of this drama, improve our defense and most importantly for your franchise enjoy the second coming of Brett Farve in his prime for the next dozen years.

Please take Jay Cutler off our hands. I don't want an unhappy QB bringing my team down (*cough* Brian Griese *cough*). Maybe he could thrive in your organization.

Love,
A Broncos Fan

Dear Mr. Angelo,

Absolutely right Paydirt!!!

Not too many Bear fans will agree with me but I believe that you and the staff are making the right moves in regards to the QB situation and how the other team needs have been addressed so far as well. If we can get a dominate pass rusher, shore up some of the offensive line depth, keep building the special teams and bring in a good hands receiver to compliment Hester then I believe, especially with the coaching changes made, the Bears will be good to go!

Dear Jerry:

Get lost.

Cop a sneak.

Take a hike.

And bring Lovie along with you.

Sincerely,
Mark

MR.ANGELO, you need to wake up&do something for a change!! we as fans are getting sick & tired of seeing every other team but the bears aquire all the best players. Every year is the same with you guys in that you look for reasons to not spend the big bucks on the big time playmakers of the N.F.L. The bears were lucky to get to the superbowl a couple years back & are nowhere close to getting back there soon without adding the real players needed to get the job done. you cant be cheap forever & expect us fans to follow you to the bottom of the league-AGAIN

Dear Jerry

Please quit.

Sincerely,
Everyone

wonder whose going to volunteer to get these great letters to him.. any takers?

Dear Jerry,

The fans are so tired of the QB parade. If for some reason Cutler did not pan out the fans would not be angry. They would be annoyed but would not blame the organization for making a move that would have much more of an upside than any possible downside. The fans need a good QB. Give us someone to at least put at the top of the franchise that we can remember and some day we may be able to say the best Bears QB we ever saw was Cutler and not have to imagine Sid Luckman being the best, since most of us weren't alive when he played. We're begging you, Please!!!

As far as Cutler, Just Do it!

Trade Harris, Vasher, and Orton and get Cutler.

Harris and Vasher have not demonstrated what you paid them and maybe somewhere else they would do a better job.

I like Orton and think he is a winner, but he does not have the skill set that Cutler has, and this is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity, go get him.

Dear Mr Angelo

U owe it to us hint (Rex Grossman) thats just punishment.

Dear Jerry i understand that you believe in Kyle but its time for the Chicago to make a change. Now I am not saying Kyle is a bust or anything I am just comparing pro bowl QB to average. Kyle can manage a game but has to work on some things. Cutler is a QB who has it all leadership, game management, can make every throw, and is smart. Lets go from an average football team to a great football team. Jay would be a perfect fit PLEASE lets make it happen. Its been long enough. PS I doubt you will read this but hey its fun to think about.

Dear Mr. Angelo,

Do you know how many Hall-of-Fame quarterbacks have played for the Bears since the 1950's?

(Clock ticking, silence, elevator music)

That's right! Zero.

Yes, I know you want us to think you're smart, what with your Sarah Palin lookalike man-glasses. But we're Bears fans, and most of us are Chicagoans, and we can smell bull***t a mile away. You've done nothing to inspire confidence in your player choices, especially at QB. Dazzle us. Here's your chance.

Words cannot express how angry I am with your non-moves this offseason. But you can reinstill my confidence in you by making this move. I always supported Kyle(especially over wrecks), but as I think Kyle is better than wrecks I also believe that Cutler is better than Orton.

If you do decide NOT to even attempt to go for Cutler, can you at least make sure the Orton has the BEST wr's out there? Do you actually believe in that head of yours, that we have a receiving core that anyone will respect?

GO GET HOLT!

DO WHAT YOU ARE PAID TO DO ANGELO, GETS US BACK TO OUR WINNING WAYS. SHOW THAT YOU ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT THE BEARS...

BEARS

Can we trade Jerry Angelo for Jay Cut

Dear Mr. Angelo:

I don't honestly believe for a second you're going to read any of these letters. However, on the off chance that you do, allow me to take a moment and thank you for the things you've done right so far in your tenure as General Manager of the Chicago Bears. I think those things are self evident, so I won't waste any of your time by going over them.

I'll cut to the chase. Kyle Orton, no matter what you or Head Coach Lovie Smith say about him, is a fine backup QB. Solid, unspectacular, and has little to no upside. In short, he is not the guy who is going to get this team to the playoffs, let alone the Superbowl.

Jay Cutler, on the other hand, would instantly be the best QB this franchise has had in over 60 years, maybe ever. Tall, strong, cocky, cannon arm, and--can you believe this--a BEARS fan. He WANTS to be here.

If you found a way to get this guy, he would instantly improve every area of the team--the offense wwuld be light years better, and the defense would not have to carry the team any more. But I assume you already know this. He is a franchise QB, a proven commodity in perhaps the hardest position to play in all of sports.

If I cannot appeal to your football sense, perhaps I can appeal to your ego. If you brought Cutler to the Bears, you would be forever known in Chicago Sports lore as a hero, the daring GM who pulled off a massive coup and made this team a contender again. AND he would be instantly the biggest sports star in the NFL's third largest market. Hands down, Cutler's a much better horse to hitch your wagon to than Kyle Orton, wouldn't you agree?

If that fails to register with you, perhaps the possibility of losing your job will. This team has fallen far short of expectations since the Superbowl loss and you must know that your time is limited. Unless you can somehow find a way to win THIS SEASON with the rabble currently on the roster, you will almost assuredly be gone. Why not give yourself some job security NOW? Curler would buy you another 2 to 3 years here easily.

If nothing else appeals to you, do it for the fans! These are tough times, and Sports is the one place many of us have to go to escape the drudgery of our everyday lives. Don't just think of making the McCaskeys richer--they have made enough money. Think of the bus drivers, the ditch diggers, the painters, the CTA workers, the guy who mops the floor long after you've gone home to sleep on your 1,000 thread count sheets. For them, sports is all they have, and the Bears are their team. Don't THEY deserve a bailout plan too?

This offseason you said that you were "fixated on stabilizing the QB position". All of Bear Nation took you at your word. Now's your chance to make good on that statement.

I'm begging you, please...keep your promise, and...

BRING US CUTLER!!!

That is all. Thank you for reading.

Lifelong Bears Fan,

Muntz

Dear Jerry,

A few months ago you said that the Bears were "fixated" on getting the QB position right. Whatever your head coach, or your coaching staff, or the teams other talent evaluators might have told you since then, your own instincts told you that the QB position needs to be fixed.

Kyle Orton had a decent season, until he got hurt. But even before he got hurt, he was no better than average. The fans - and maybe the coaches - get excited about average QB play around here, because we used to a steady diet of horrendous. Even if Kyle has a full, uninjured season of average play this year, do you really want to shell out big bucks in free agency for a QB who is average? Remember what just happened with John St Clair? The minute a player thinks they have you over a barrel, the price goes up - way up.

And there will always be someone willing to pay it, if you don't.

It is also important to see if our line, RB and receiver play improves once we have a QB other teams have to respect. i don't know how you can hope to do a consistent job evaluating performance at any of these positions if the QB play is erratic. It's just possible that one pick up might improve play across the offense.

Therefore, follow your own instincts. Fix the QB position - long term, and for a price that you know and can plan for up front. Offer Denver 2 number ones, 3 number ones, and any combination of Urlacher, Harris, Vasher, and Orton it takes to get a deal done for Jay Cutler.

Mr. Angelo,

As a Bear fan for over 40 years I have suffered through such great and notable qbs as Bob Avelenni, Mike Phipps, Vince Evans, Mike Tomczak, Jeff Fuller, Cade McSomethin...King Rex.. the list of inept arms and 2 cent heads that the Bears have called qbs is impressive only in its length and reputation for futility...

PLEASE, please take a risk and obtain a 25 yr old Pro Bowl QB in Cutler... Give them what they want and more; sadly even if they wanted Forte.. While Matt is definately your best pick and player I would even part with him to obtain a QB with a chance to be great.. as you said it is the most important position on the team...

While I was born and raised in Chicago and go back every Christmas and summer to visit our great city; I spent about 10 years living in the Bay Area where the 49ers had nothing but GREAT qbs during my time there... Montana, Young and even Garcia was better than ANYTHING the Bears have had... I have seen the power of great qb and would love nothing more than to see the proud and great Bears have one...

Please pull the trigger on this trade so I can stop feeling like I need to pull the trigger on myself with each dropback then subsequent inept incompletion each Bears QB executes flawlessly..

Appreciate your consideration.. GO BEARS !!!

dear jerry i not even worried about qb rite now i think kyle is good and we got hanie i say u should of got a wr it was good ones out there but what you do sit there like a dummy you suppose to be a good gm and at the rate you goin you just suck we could of got tj we could of got t.o we still can get holt or harrision we need somthin cant alway relie on the draft so get it to gather before they put you on the hot seat

Jerry,

Please, for the love of God, make an attempt at making this trade. Cutler is a viable option for the future of the Bears franchise. He has proven himself to have the potential to be great, and is a pro-bowler already. Orton is just another in a long line of mediocrity. He will never see the pro-bowl. I believe that you do a good job finding talent late in the draft. However, your future in Chicago will be short lived if you don't do something to prove you want to take this franchise to success.

Kevin

I've been a long time Bear's fan though thick and mostlty thin... During the Bear's super bowl run i was luckly enough to finally have a chance to go to a Bear's game. It was a game againest the Dolphins, which they lost. I spent alot of money that day...But the Bear's of late make my interest in the sport wain. It seems they are content on a on a sub par team. That the ever dedicated Bear's fans will still be there forever no matter what we put on the field. Sure we have a solid defense. But the constant pressure the defense faces will only break if we don't put out a offense that atleast resembles something that can score. At the very least hold onto the ball. I can understand not signing a T.O. but a poistion that can make a difference is the Qb spot. Jay cutler is that man. please atleast look at him make a atempt at some greatness. I for one find my interest for football diminishing unless the Bear's do something to improve there chances for winning. Cause to me the nfl isnt the nfl its the bfl(bear's football league). I may not spend big bucks but i spend bucks all the same. Maybe that will get a fire under you're butt to do something

Bubba's Mom - "your Sarah Palin lookalike man-glasses"

I AM CRACKIN UPP!!!!!!

Mr Angelo, First thanks for the moves you've made to make the Bears successful ...when the Bears have been successful.

i'm not going to try to tell you who to get , or how. Yopu know what's out there ( Cutler can throw, old man Holt can still catch, etc.)

All that I ask is that our coaching staff do what I don't recall seeing in my adult life. Develop the talent. I know that's what they profess to do , but are apparently a pretty poor franchise when it comes to developing talent. Because this dates back to papaBear halas' days , you are personally off the hook. It's a stigma with the franchise.
We can't develop a QB to save our life , here in Chicago ( yes I know I said "we") Jim Mcmahon wasn't developed, he just came as is
kind of a "brittle Farve-like" QB).
The way Lovie is personally working to develop Daniel Manning a nickel back. That's what we should have seen with the WRs.last year. Someone should have been spoon feeding Bennett the playbook.
I know that they are professionals and all, but they are also your investment. You can't wait for them to fail ( Benson) . At the risk of babying them , you need to personnally insure that these guys absorb the playbook and advance their progress at the maximum rate that is allowed.
We've ( you and the Bears that is) had the talent, you just struggle at getting it to contribute in our system. it's not the system, it's not the players , it's not the coaches, it's the ability to getting it all in sync. The coaches need to develop the talent in a better way. This goes back as I said decades, so it's not a matter of getting new coaches. Buddy Ryan developed defensive talent , but the offense of the 85 Bears basically was raw ( tons of 1st rounders) talent that gelled at the right time.

I don't know how to develop talent, so all ican do is hope that you guys recognize that as the biggest deficit for this franchise.

New England and Pittsburgh as well as Sf of old , didn't always aquire exceptional talent, they just knew how to get the best that talent had to offer and get it to work towards their teams philosophy. ( get of the bus running and force turnovers)

It's not rocket science but it is a bit more work than finger painting requires. That said , I have to go develop my own talent , or I'll starve.

Dear Neil Hayes,

You just got nominated as the

Honorary Chairman of the * PIT VIPERS *

This picture is great. It looks like Jerry is awaiting your letters!

BubbasMom - I too cracked up at the "Sarah Palin" joke" (so timely;)

It seems that this blog is about 80% Pro Cutler and about 20% Pro Angelo. I hope he has some little assistant who runs in the latest FCP blog posts for him to peruse before he makes or doesnt make the biggest move of his career!

This is the Bears Kobe Bryant Moment! Will we blow it again?

Please for once in our lifetime let me brag about Cutler being our franchise quaterback since MCmahon.

Mr. Angelo, I don't know about the business end, but wouldn't the Bears organization reap larger revenues if we had a star QB and were legitimate upper tier contenders. I have been a Bears fan all of my long life, but I gotta tell you, it is absolutely disgusting to watch second rate QB's parade through the decades. PLEASE, try a star QB just once! If a Cutler deal isn't it, SOMEONE! We fans would be eternally grateful, you would have a contender and Chicago would be a happier place.Isn't that what life is really about? Do you even have a clue the excitement and good will it would generate (yeah, yeah, it's not a popularity contest, but sometimes it should be). Signed, Can't take it much longer. PS. I am seriously considering asking fans to boycott if you don't "address the QB situation".

Dear Mr. Angelo,

Please do your due dilligence and look into bringing Jay Cutler into the fold. If it cannot be done, so be it. But, please tell us you are exploring every opportunity to look at Cutler. Your lack of moves this off-season is a bit dis-heartening to us fans.

This franchise and fans deserve better than what we've seen over the past 2 seasons on offense, defense and special teams (barring Mr. R. Gould).

Thank you.

I always want my Bears to succeed, but I do not feel that we have the talent. We have had QB problems for YEARS, our offensive line ( and yes it is OFFENSIVE TO US ) has also been a problem for years. When have we had a decent receiver for more than a year or two?

When are you going to wake up, check and make sure the phone at HALAS HALL, is not off the hook, and do what a good GM does. The Chicago Bears front office is not like Pittsburgh, New England, the Giants, Bill Parcels, Indianapolis, ETC. You clowns fail more than you succeed.

You and all of your hires need to go, we need people who are qualified !!

Dear Mr. Angelo

Do yourself and all us BEARS fans a favor find a QB do something take your finger out of you ear and do something if you don't get Cutler go for Garcia or a QB that has started, and been very sucessfull a player who has not been hurt. Also, don't get a first rounder that has a history of problems use your brain.

jerry, i know what you said about the qb position was just talk and
nothing will get done. but lets do a what if here. the one thing denver needs is defense. why not trade some defensive players, tommie harris with his knee and contract, how about vasher, the reason why i'm saying this is defense is the one thing you can draft
so why not some defensive players in a package and next years first
round pick, it won't be as high if we improve. also trade orton to
denver so they are in a good position also. here's the kicker here orton could become a star in mc daniels offense. now if this doesn't play out how about getting one of those cleveland qbs while sending orton over there, he's a free agent next year. you could package some defensive players and orton and may not have to give up next years number one pick. if cleveland number one is better than ours then you could swap with them and get a better quality player for us. a change in teams would probably help these players.
jerry, if the denver deal doesn't work, how about a draft day trade
with cleveland, alls quite over there. fans the reason the defense
has fallen on hard times is because that rocket scientist lovie smith forced the bears to get rid of ron riveria, one of our 85 bears, one of our own, who by the way is doing good where ever he is
i think san diego. we have never recovered from that one move. now
he's desprate enough to call defensive signals. lovie will fail and
is coaching on borrowed time, oh and the money the bears still owe him. lovie doesn't develop player's talent, i feel jerry has given
lovie more than enough players through the draft, but lovie can't
coach, he makes mistakes in games. lovie caught lighting in a bottle
in 06, got lucky. remember the year they were 13-3 and the next year they showed their true colors. jerry, you have two options here
do something for the fans and do something right. fans maybe jerry
wants to fail so he can force the mccheapees to get rid of lovie and
build a great team himself.

Culzie you are right! Maaaaan it looks like he is anxiously waiting. I had to stop typing and started laughing again!!!! I just keep scrolling up looking at him!!!! He looks fresh than a mug!!! Looks like Count Olaf! Roman - beautiful work!!!

There is some consensus out there that ownership hamstrings what you are able to do Jerry. Certainly this reputation is not one that developed in the recent years. You knew what you were getting into. It seems as though ownership wants the team just good enough to be profitable. Maybe the truth lies somewhere between the conspiracy theory and some objective reality. I don't know. This is simply something you are going to have to transcend. No one said it was going to be easy.

The Chicago Bears are a flagship NFL franchise. We are the Yankees of football but without the recent title's. One thing is certain, the NFL is a better league when the Chicago Bears are contending for a title.

The inability of this franchise to land anything close to a "franchise QB" is not simply an odd coincidence. It’s unfathomably incomprehensible and simultaneously cosmically laughable. There are no doubt inter-dimensional beings out there with powers that make them gods by comparison to human beings and even THEY are completely bamboozled by the Bears inability to land a premium QB. This is a moral and existential issue that transcends space and time. If you are able to actually land a franchise QB in a Chicago Bear uniform you will have not only improved the Bears, you will have mended a massive rip in the hole of the fabric of the Universe.

Go after Jay friggin Cutler with all you have. I'm hoping "fixation" isn't just a bunch of hot air.

Jerry --

Please don't act rash. The Bears are fine as is.

When you drafted Rex Grossman, I fell to my knees and kissed the ground. When he developed just like I anticipated, God, was I excited.

Kyle is a different story. I think he has the tools to be a good quarterback, which has kept me lying awake at night in a cold sweat. Fortunately, at every turn, you diminish his abilities, erode his confidence and undermine the team's belief in him.

Way to go!!!!

What we don't need is Jay Cutler mucking it up for the Bears... and me.

Don't sign him. Please continue to stick your head in the sand and do nothing to improve this team.

Best regards,

Sid Luckman, ongoing holder of all Bears' QB records

Jerry, go get Jay cutler and be a hero.
the next 1st round pick will probably be busts so u might as well just trade those 1st round picks to get Cutler.

Mr.Angelo i dont blame u for not going after a franchise qb when we dont even have a good offensive coodinator why mess up this man so young in his career when he can have a chance to be a hall of fame qb but please dont feed us the bolonga that kyle orton is the face of the franchise i do think he can be a very effictive back up but he's not the starter that we need i think after we get a good coodinator then we can start to work on a qb but please hurry time is ticking and ur on the clock

Dear Jerry,

I have been a Bears fan for over 40 years.
Do you realize that the best Bears QB that I have seen in my lifetime was Walter Payton?
Do you realize that the best Bears QB in the Jerry Angelo era is..... Rex Grossman!
He just beats out Jim Miller.
My patience for this ran out years ago.

The word "Pathetic" does not do justice to this long running joke just like you do not do justice to the title NFL General manager.

Mr. Angelo, I too am a lifelong Bears fan, and have watched and cheered (and booed) this team for 35 years.I do not pretend to have all the answers as many of these "bloggers"do. I feel that more than a 1st and second round pick is too much for ANY player.J. Cutler is a bit of a head case and his long term health is a concern. There will be several good Q.B's available in next years draft and I see no point in mortgaging the future of the franchise for 1 player. If he can be had at a reasonable price, fine, go get him . Otherwise, use this years picks WISELY, build the future of the franchise and make us all proud to wear the Orange and Blue. P.S. I think young Mr. Robiski would be a great 2nd round pick. Good pedigree, good hands, good head .

Trade everyone for a QB. I've never witnessed a real QB. By accident you'd think we could get one. Bottom line - the Bears are too cheap and Angelo doesn't have the nerve to make this move.

Lee Pendarvis says "THERE ARE NO DOUBT INTER-DIMENSIONAL BEINGS OUT THERE WITH POWERS THAT MAKE THEM GODS BY COMPARISON TO HUMAN BEINGS and even THEY are completely bamboozled by the Bears inability to land a premium QB. This is a moral and existential issue that transcends space and time. If you are able to actually land a franchise QB in a Chicago Bear uniform you will have not only improved the Bears, you will have mended a massive rip in the hole of the fabric of the Universe."

Lee, you had me 100%. I truly mean that. It was like I was reading my own material. Then, all of a sudden, you come out with that! Now, if you're joking--and I think that's possible--you just missed me on the joke. Actually, if you had eliminated the text that I capitalized, I'd be laughing too hard to post this! However, if you're serious--and I believe that's the case--you are more "out there" than the 'gods' you referenced my man. Still, I am refreshed by anyone who uses the word "existential." If Kierkagaard were alive today, he would truly agree that "This is a moral issue that transcends space and time."

I've been telling people for over a decade now that the lack of championships throughout Chicago sports history defies any sense of logic or probability if you subtract Michael Jordan, the '85 Bears, '05 Sox, and the very early history of our teams. My BRIEF take(I could write a book)is as follows: The early days of sport just didn't have a lot of what is expected from franchises to win today--namely money and innovative management. Moreover, we fans have perhaps been far too loyal--even to the point of taking pride in our fanaticims--for our own good as well as giving management an "east out." MJ was testament to the fact that it took a super human to overcome whatever the "negative powers" were in order to win six titles. The '85 Bears were just so good that they had to win, but they should have won more! The '05 Sox (and whenever the Cubs win) still can't erase nearly a century (or more in the Cubs case) of futility. Unbelievable futility! And, no hockey team has a longer streak of championship futility than the Blackhawks.

So, Lee, while I believe you're "out there," there is certainly something very strong in what you're saying. Chicago's sports teams, not just the Bears, have seemingly defied even the "laws of space and time." The truly funny thing is that I believe America would be a country better off in terms of its sporting fabric if Chicago's teams were perennial contenders with many recent and/or current championships under its belt. However, no one is going to make sure that we don't get out of our own way! Furthermore, I think there's a semblance of humor in it all. People like to see us a bit like some sort of joke however "lovable" that joke can be.

GM of the Bears,

If you are serious about stabilizing the QB position, run to the phone and do whatever it takes to get Cutler. We Bear fans are sick of seeing futility behind the center position. Franchise QBs like Cutler do not come along to often. If you're serious about winning you would go out there and get this guy.

Mr. angelo
get jay cutler or you are going to lose another fan. Eventually we will all turn on the franshise if you dont show us that you care about winning. The blackhawks went through that and it was not fun for them. I will not represent the bears if you dont stop filling your pockets with fans money. We WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS ANOTHER SEASON.
God Bless
lol
ej

Mr. Angelo,
I will not pretend as though I understand the finer intricacies of the salary cap, player contracts, or revenue sharing. I understand that the Chicago Bears are a business to the McCaskey family. But for as much as I don't understand, I do know this much: Adding a player with the ability possessed by Jay Cutler would enhance the Bears' chances at winning in ways that we may possibly have never witnessed prior.
Winning is all I care about. But who am I? I'm the guy with Chicago Bears tattoos. I'm the one who owns the Bears jerseys and wears them only on game day as good luck for MY team. I cried upon hearing that Walter Payton lost his fight for life. I cried, too, in January of 1986, but with joy. For better or worse, my life is partially defined through my interactions and associations with all things Chicago Bears. I am a third-generation die hard - and I am far from alone.
Mr. Angelo, you owe me. You owe all of us who pay hard-earned money to dress our two-year-old daughters in an Urlacher jerseys, purchase NFL Sunday Ticket SOLELY for Bears games, or take the time and care enough to write you a letter. Though I consider myself to be more than just some fanatic, the Bears mean a lot to me.
I'll make this as easy as possible. If I were you (and I'm not), there is little with regard to present or future draft picks that I would not offer to get something on this team that fans have not seen for nearly sixty years - A REAL QB.
Do the right thing. Bring Jay Cutler to Chicago.
Thank you.

CALLING ALL BEARS FANS What does everyone think of starting a boycott of any/all Chicago Bears merchandise? I am realistic enough to know we will always support, watch and go to our beloved Bears games. But if we all stopped lining the owners pockets with that extra cash, maybe they would smell the coffee. Therefore, I will not purchase ANYTHING NEW that has Chicago Bears logo on it, until I feel they have made a legitimate effort to to put this franchise on the next level. I can't do it alone. Let me hear some feedback on this idea. I need a strong voice here.

Dear Jerry-
I am a huge Cutler fan, but if you don't go after him I personally can understand giving Orton another year to develop. I thought after all the letters about Cutler you would appreciate something different. I will say this though, which you may not like, it has to be completely obvious to you that if the Bears don't win the North this year, you probably won't be in Chicago in 2010..food for thought.
Go Bears

Hey Jerry,

Us Chicago born and bred are definitely a hard crowd to please, we tell you to get us a QB, so you get us Rex, he doesnt pan out, and somehow it's your fault.

I'm one of the few not on this Cutler bandwagon. no one has ever screamed for cutler, everyone will say because he wasnt available, but still.

I like Orton just fine, he fills the role. What i do have a problem with however, is... not getting him SEVERAL serious talent receivers to throw too. it will open up our running game tremendously. Cutler, with no receivers is just like any QB we havent heard of yet.

Orton has a decent arm, if we had good receivers, we'd have a pretty solid game. shore up our D a bit, not even 06 style, but just a tad better than last year, and some passing game, bam... playoff bound.

work on a QB the next season or after that, lets see what Orton's got with somebody to throw it to.

my only serious issue is releasing Mike Brown... and then signing Earl or whoever, who has played less than Brown.
My prediction Bears: 11-5, with several squeak by victories.

but if Marinelli doesnt pan out as the ultimate "FA signing" then yeah, off with your head, because that was crap. just tell us, we arent going to be big players in FA this year.

Much love from a Die Hard Fan. Go Bears

Dear Jerry, fix the line.

If you want to make yourself look like a genious, fix the line. Fixing the line will make your QB and RB look and play better. It will keep your old Defensive line and Secondary off the field longer. And it will put points on the board that would have definitely put your team in the playoffs this year. Its cheaper than spending money and will actually make you more money and appease fans like me - who just want to see PROGRESS.

Oh one last reminder... fix the line.

Gig, of COURSE I was kidding. Though I will point out that I find it odd that people can go into a building every Sunday, eat the body and drink the blood of their God, but that inter-dimensional beings strike you as crazy.

Then again the Chicago Bears have had TWO Earth based biological entities in their ENTIRE HISTORY that could be called "franchise QBs". I only refer to McMahon as a "franchise" guy because when he was on the field, which was only about 35% of the time, the Bears were virtually unbeatable. I think he could have put up big nubers in a west coast system.

Lee,

I take back what I said about my "out there" belief. In review, your original post was fantastically statirical and humorous. Keep it up.

Jerry,

I get it now!
You act like you are not happy with Orton and suddenly your new golden boy is questioned in public. The press picks it up and runs with it and after a year of the fans complaining about not getting Jay Cutler no one will want Orton around after 2009.
Another toxic Bears QB situation.

Cutler will put up better numbers than Orton and the fans will boo him for not being Jay Cutler as if it is his fault.
Discredit him all year and make his leaving for another team and more money easy to swallow after getting the fans to boo him out of town just like Rex.
The truth is that you are afraid that Orton just might have a good season and with his contract coming to an end you don't want to pay him.

Then you can move this Brett Basanez stiff into the picture.
He will be grateful to have the job given to him and you get yet another scab on the cheap.
It is all just a P.R. game.

You may suck as a G.M. but you sure know how to play the McCaskey's penny pinching game to the T.
Nice work!

Two things come to mind; Jay Cutlers' demeanor and the Bears O-line and receiver situation.

I'll have to pass.

Dear Mr. Angelo---

Marty Grebb here---I'm a 53 year Bear's fan, currently age 63---I greatly respect your position---I realize you would not be there if you did not know quite a bit about this great game of football---
I myself have long standing connections with the city---
I am an orignal member of the Buckinghams, and was a member also of the group Chicago---the year the Bears last went to the Super Bowl,
FOX sports used a song of mine during games called, "The Bears are Back"---Hope you heard it---David Haugh even returns my emails--
(ha ha)
I am not on the front lines of what goes on with the Bears by any means, or is any other fan, as are you on a day to day basis--
I'm sure you are doing what you feel is the RIGHT thing--- but I AM a rapid, deeply rooted Bears fan---I live out here on the left coast--I watch all Bears games on NFL sunday ticket
Now to the point:
I know you or any other GM are not mentalists---No one can predict the future----but I believe firmly in my heart that YOU
have a great opportunity to do something for the city that will never be forgotten, or will you yourself---YOU have a once in a life time chance to get, all in one fell swoop, possibly one of the best NFL quaterbacks of all time (in my own opinion) that is ALSO a died in the wool Bears fan---Quite a rare chance---My belief is, you can resusitate the heart of a Bears team that does not seem to all be pulling in the same direction---
So with respect I ask you---from myself--just one "Bears everyman"---please don't get out gunned or outsmarted on this one--
Sign Jay Cutler ---given the chance, beat them all out---I think
destiny cries out for you to notice this great opportunity--
thanks for listening---

Gig sez: "Still, I am refreshed by anyone who uses the word "existential."

I wrote a book titled:

"JUMP! A Guide For The Existentially Challenged"

Ask Roman to put you in touch with me and I'll send you a PDF copy.

You might need it after watching the 2009 Bears stink up the NFL.

If you have to risk many star players for one then CUTLER IS NOT THE ANSWER!!!!! hes only one guy an the risk we would have to take to get that one guy is to great, HESTER, FORTE, URLACHER, HARRIS, ORTON, FIRST ROUND PICKS, giving up players an picks like theses will only damage the team more than it already is, we would only cause more problems then we would solve. Look at what those players do for the team an then think about what the team would be without them.....

Listen up, Putz..

Quit deciding who plays on Sundays...shut up...that's not your job...Jesus, it wasn't far from yesterday you learned how to check the correct boxes on contracts...Didn't Rex and Ced teach you anything?...

Go get a veteran backup QB if ya have to...

Still can't believe you got Orton in the 4th round, but even you get lucky sometimes...

Cutler is a Putz...and I'm confident you know the difference

Jerry, I have been a loyal Bears fan since 1962. One constant I've observed the last 47 years has been the quarterback position. We have had at least 50 QB's start in that span. Wade, Avellini, Douglas, Evans, Tomzcak, McMahon, Flutie, Harbaugh, Kramer, Krenzel,
Stewart, Hutchinson, Grossman, Orton, (you get the picture). I've watched and played alot of football in my life and you can not win consistantly (Super Bowls) without stability, longevity and some talent at the QB position. Examples 1. Packers (Starr, Favre) 2. Jets (Namath) 3. Dolphins (Griese, Marino) 4. Steelers (Bradshaw, Rothlisburger) 5. Cowboys (Staubach, Aikman) 6. 49ers (Montana, Young) Patriots (Brady). My point is less is best (QB's). I am so sick and tired of all these teams (many of them expansion) having better LEADERS than us. The BEARS are the NFL! Papa started it! Chicago is the second largest market in the NFL. Please, I'm begging you, do whatever it takes to bring Cutler to the Bears. If it doesn't happen wait 2 years and trade as many players as needed and get Tim Tebow. Thank you.

Dear Jerry:
First, you have my deepest condolences for your bad luck in your job. After your careful and crafty statement that you were fixated on the quarterback and this was the most, the only, important position to get right, and you needed to evaluate and pursue every possible avenue, knowing fool well that there were no good qb's available in free agency or even in the draft where you'd be picking. You had it all set up perfect to run your game on low balling orton on his contract and holding up false hope and promises to bears fans that you knew what the team needed and you were just the man for the job.

And then, this had to happen, Cutler became available out of the blue and now you are stuck in your own trap. You created this expectation that you were going to do all you could to solidify the qb position, knowing you really never intended to do anything, and maybe even holding out hope you could sneak rex back if he goes unsigned and you are short a backup that knows the offense. And now you are faced with the very real opportunity to sign and deliver a bonafide qb to the bears, and you have no excuse for not doing it.

Not that you need an excuse, you have been getting away with just jabbering incoherently and getting a pass by the bears owners and the hapless bear fans. Jerry, your biggest supporters are Packers fans and they always enjoy your public statements. After being called hicks by bear fans, packer fans like watching the shoe on the other foot. In fact, the whole NFC north division will be watching carefully how you extricate yourself from the mess you are in. The other teams are hoping you survive and are the bears gm for years and years to come. You do more for those teams chances than anything they could ever hope to do for their own teams. Keep up the good work, maybe you could get your head coach to come out publicly and say "we like kyle, kyle orton is our quarterback". Oh wait, he already did this didn't he.

Good luck Jerry, I'm sure you will weather this storm like you always do. Maybe one of your character, floor guys will get arrested or have a baby to distract your fans from what you are up to. Keep up the good work, remember what they say, you can fool some of the people some of the time, and that's usually good enough!

best regards dean wormer

P.S.

Can you start having some of the old 85 Bears hang around a little more too?

I am a Broncos fan and wrote a letter to you last week asking for you to trade for Cutler. Thank you for doing it. We appreciate all the picks, and I honestly think it will be a win win for both franchises. The picks will shore up our defense, plus Orton is good and you get the most talented young QB in the league. Hope to see you in the super bowl someday soon.
