Bulls fans boo Hinrich - over Big Macs

When Kirk Hinrich missed a free throw with 17.9 seconds left in the Bulls' 99-91 win over the Pistons at the United Center, I knew what was going to happen.

Bulls fans booed Hinrich for not reaching the 100-point mark, which means free Big Macs for everyone with a ticket.

Big Macs. They cost 3 bucks and change. An average Bulls ticket is over $50.

I realize there's somewhat of a thrill in getting anything for free, but sideline reporter Steve Kashul - who does postgame interviews aired on the scoreboard - said he had trouble interviewing Hinrich because the booing was so loud.

Ridiculous. And it didn't seem like fun booing, it was loud and real. And some of it was on national television on TNT.

By the way, Hinrich scored a game-high 24 points, dealt 8 assists and played his normal stellar defense while Derrick Rose sat out with an injured wrist.

And Hinrich ended up apologizing to the fans at the end of the interview.

This is chicago. We Love our food. and its always fun booing. I hope the players understand its all in fun.

This is an absolutely ridiculous marketing venture. Our players understand the reason the boo's happen, but the opposing players don't understand why we are trying to score in games where we may be blowing them out. Last year we almost got into a fight because the other team thought we were running up the score...END THIS NOW!

Actually, when Hinrich had the ball at the absolute end of the game with the clock fast approaching zeros, it appeared he almost wanted to toss up the three to get over that hundred mark (and make up for that missed free throw)...but he didn't.

That said, I believe he should have looked over and asked the head coach on other team (I believe he was right in front of him, and would've had time) if it would be okay for him to try to hit the bucket. And I think if it was done like that, I don't think that coach, nor the opposing players, would have been too upset.

You don't BOO, you either Moan or Groan that the team didn't score 100 points. Sheesh, there is people out here who can't even afford to buy sporting event tickets.

If a Moan of a Groan was heard that is in line with losing out on the burger. But to Boo is totally ridiculous!

As a season ticket holder, I can tell you that most Bulls fans are overweight. Kirk obviously recognizes this, and was just doing his part to help us all get ready for thong weather.

It's fans' game so if "they" to want to promote the Big Mac free for every 100 pts and a win, then that's their gig and deal with it. For me personally based on past experience as a former season ticketholder, I think the booing (for the record, I don't boo my own home team) is more out of fun because I rarely see any continuous heckling and no garbage being thrown onto the court after the fact. It was a good victory last night, let's not ruin the moment or make this a distraction through the media outlets because of a silly Big Mac. Of course TNT would misinterpret the moment, they're a national syndication. I'm sure Kirk knew that the booing was meant all in fun. If the other team thinks the Bulls are trying to run up the score, then they should be EDUCATED to learn why or just get rid of the darn promotion if we're all so overblown about sportsmanship over sponsorship these days.

Hearing the fans boo on nationalized television because they didn't get their free Big Mac was embarrassing.

Has it been that long since Bulls fans have had a championship that they've totally forgotten how to act? I mean a little bit of booing out of fun is one thing, but they zestfully went after Hinrich. And this was not the first time, they've been doing this for a couple years now.

I wonder if McDonald's will capitalize on this with some sort of ad campaign.

Kirk got booed for missing those free throws. His miss costed the 300 section a free samich. Look, that is a LONG standing tradition at the UC and the players like Kirk know better. It means something to the fans and especially the little ones.

When do you boo a home team? When the team is under .500 and not meeting your expectations. That's when you boo.

Doenst matter if they win or lose - you cannot fool Chicago! This team has no heart. Big whoop, they won a home game. The Bulls are going no-where in the play offs. We are grounded in reality. The crowd that night...and every night..know the Bulls situation. Show some heart and give us free Mac's! Is that too much to ask? Not asking for a ring! Heavens no....we suck!

This is so stupid. The people booing him aren't really Bulls fans. They're at the game just to be "seen" and don't even know what's going on during the games, or what's at stake. This is really annoying, because the real fans are stuck in 300 section, while all the pretty boys who don't really care what's going on are all sitting in the 100 section just because it's the "cool" thing. There wasnt even one DETROIT SUCKS chant. That's because maybe half the crowd doesnt even know what's going on. I bet if the Bulls do make the playoffs, those exact same people will be cheering on LeBron.

It's really sad that the United Center crowd gets more into the stupid Dunkin Doughnuts race than the game itself. God, I miss the old Stadium.

This would happen at every venue, for every sporting event, 'til kingdom come.

It's a promo, for crying out loud. Let the crowd have its moment. We know they're booing at the missed opportunity, and who wouldn't want a free $3+ Big Mac. It's moments like this where we need to separate sneer from jeer, shucks from WTF, bummer from JO.

The league knows by now what is going on, and the players can't let situations dictate the proper thing to do in a blowout. Otherwise, what the hey, let's eat!

Kirk has been around long enough to know that us Bulls fans are just having a good time and care much more about getting back to the post-season than a darn Big Mac. Honestly, Kirk should have thrown up a three at the end of the game. It's the freaking Pistons! Who cares if the Pistons get upset that we run the score up. Their the biggest whiners in the NBA. All they do is cry about fouls and how the refs are out to get them. This isn't high school or college this is the pros. They get paid to play 48 Min. a night so play 48 min. God how I would have loved to see Kirk drain a 3 at the end. Big macs for all and a group of pissed off Pistons. What could get better.

I was at the game last night, the booing was really loud but a lot of fun! Yes, it was a $3 Big Mac, but look out for the fans! We were a little disappointed and as you know Chicago people love to eat! We still love you Kirk, we're just greedy!

Im just tired of people who have nothing to complain about in the moment trying to find something to be disappointed about. Bulls fans have been doing that to Kirk since he got drafted. NOPE, hes not the most talented point guard, but he IS a winner. Mark my words, this guy is ending his career on a talented team with a Chip. Look, there's a BIG DIFFERENCE between the booing over a silly Big Mac than let's say, booing Rex Grossman or booing the Cubs when they choked last year in the playoffs first round. Maybe if some people would just get off the high pedestal already and UNDERSTAND that the Big Mac promotion is meant as a nice gesture from the McDonalds sponsorship team to the loyal Bulls fans, then get over it or really, just don't go to the stadium anymore. If you can't tell the difference between booing out of fun and real courtside heckling, then you don't know sports, period.

I was at the game last night, and the boos were extremely playful in nature. I don't think Kirk's feeling are going to be too hurt.

It's moments like that "Booing 4 Big Macs" incident where I wouldn't mind seeing a huge meteor
fall from the sky, landing right on the whole section of booers.

What is it about our country that everybody feels entitled to getting something for nothing?
And when they don't get what they want, they whine, complain or "BOO!"

Our ancestors, (the ones who built this country from the ground up with blood, sweat and tears)
would pimp slap us all back to the stone age if they were here witnessing what we've become

Let me give you a perfect example of what I'm talking about:
We live in a country where there are three different, yet specific, "eating disorders".
While at the exact same time, all over the world, millions of people are starving to death each year.

disasters and secretly wishing that they would keep getting worse and worse.

Alright, fine, perhaps "nice gesture" is too complimentary a word for a typical greedy corporation entity, but it's still a promotion nevertheless and they've been doing this for YEARS, not just this season and last. You make it sound like it is a marketing scam to make more money... from a rebuilding Bulls team playing less than .500 ball?

I mean look at some of these comments already describing the booing as "sick and demented" and "embarrassing"... these people were probably never at the game and passing judgment based on what was reported in the papers or from a nationally syndicated broadcast that does not cover the Bulls on a daily basis! I was actually at the game last night with my buddy and yes, the booing was loud enough, but it was by no means malicious. Being a sports fanatic and watching hundreds of games at a stadium over my lifetime, I know the difference between playful booing and real booing to Bears quarterbacks or from fed up Cubs fans. I actually found Steve Kashul's criticism on the incident over the air more offensive because he misunderstood playful bantering with heckling. I wasn't impressed with his preaching at all.

Honestly Hinrich should be cheered for helping 20,000 or so fans keep their cholesterol down by missing that free throw that would have rewarded the fans with a $3.59 heart attack in a sack. A few years ago I lowered my cholesterol from 245 to 161 in just 6 months simply by not eating at McDonald's, Burger King or any other fast food joint of that nature. Maybe the Bulls could get Suoer Wal-Mart or some other grocery super market to honor winning tickets when they scoe 100 or more with $5 off their next grocery purchase.

Roman my good friend: not everyone can afford to attend a Bulls game. Up at the 300 level you will find a bunch of youngsters. For many of them its their first time EVER attending not only a game, but a public event. They got there through a reading program at their school, or church or community organization, as an academic achievement gift, etc. These students are bussed to the game which they have waited to attend for the entire symester. Its circled on their calendars, they are on their best behavior and they go out and buy matching tee-shirts and hats and have those disposable cameras from walgreens. They get to the game and they are mesmerized, and feel like they are on TV. Their seats are so high up they can't believe it but don't care. (They are really watching the jumbo-tron.) And they have a hand full of cards in their hands hanging on every promotion! Hoping to win a jug of water from Ice Mountain, a donut from Dunkin or God forbid - the holy grail of freebies - The Big Mac. There is a guy with a slingshot with a free teeshirt teasing them all game! He has them up cheering to the top of their voices "Lets Go Bulls...Lets Go Bulls"!! Why are they cheering so loudly??? Because he has threatened to leave their section if they don't cheer loud enough!! Louder! He beckons with his hand to his ear to one section...and then (in grinch like fashion) to the other side!! They are working so hard that they are getting hoarse...and with one flick of the sling, the shirt lands in the 200 section. And the big tease goes on until late in the evening, the creshendo of excitement fluctuates like an economic barameter and all hope of winning something wanes, BUT WAIT! The Bulls are going to win!!! And there is one last chance to walk away with something. The Bulls have 98 points and Kirk Hinrich at the line... ONE LAST TEASE for the ride home.

Hinrich missed the free throw on purpose. The Big Mac 100 point prize is fixed just like the rest of the NBA.

I'm going to take a wild guess here that I'm the one you referred to describing the booing as "sick and demented".
I apologize if that's how it came off, that wasn't at all what I was referring to as sick and demented.

No, what I think is sick and demented is how we have three, count them, THREE major eating disorders in this country (Obesity, Bulemia and Anorexia) while at the same time millions of people die of starvation around the planet each and every year.

I understand why the fans were booing. I understand that they were upset that their team didn't come through with a free Big Mac for them by scoring 100 points. They bought a ticket, it's their right to boo or cheer, or pass nauxious gas from all the beer and brats they consumed the night before. It's a free country, I get it. However, with their team fighting for a playoff spot, and just beating their biggest rival on National TV, I don't know... maybe cheering, rather than booing would have been the smarter move on the fans part.

I could be wrong on this point, but I doubt it.

Nice post. By your loquacious descriptions I can tell that you've attended an NBA game, or any other professional sports venue for that matter. In a lot of ways it translates pretty well to an Alan Watts musing about life I heard some time ago.... You should watch the animated version of it on Youtube. "Alan Watts - Life and Music"

Another way to look at it is how George Carlin put it, towards the end of his life. After 70 years of living in this country, George Carlin finally figured it out when he said: "When you're born into this world, you're given a ticket to see the freak show. Those who are fortunate enough to be born in the USA are given front row seats."
(Or in this particular case, perhaps it's more like court-side seats)

Marshall, the argument about obesity in this country is a debate for another topic of discussion that is non-sports related. I’m in no way trying to defend a stupid Big Mac promotion for all the unhealthy qualities it represents on the nutrition table, but I’m defending what was misunderstood at the end of the game and blown out of proportion by not only TNT television, but also by our own local media in the papers and over sports talk radio. For the record, I wasn’t one of the people at the game booing Hinrich, but I did laugh out loud when it happened because at the time, hey, it was funny and clear that the booing was meant more out of fun. If you weren’t at the game and if you don’t attend too many sports events, then you wouldn’t understand or you just had to be there to know what I mean. As loud as the booing was, you could also hear all the laughing in the background. This has NOTHING to do with this being a free country or what rights we have or don’t have from buying a ticket. What I don’t like is the all the preaching on a pedestal by the commentators and radio jocks saying what’s right or wrong again and then categorizing Chicago people as terrible sports fans. All I’m saying is that before anyone passes judgment and make preposterous comments or opinions, get the entire story first before you preach the high morals! Look at all the people in this blog topic alone who were at the game that night and what did we all say in common? The booing was all in fun. Consistency, proof, witnesses… all there, yet, I’m still hearing and reading about how “embarrassing” it was or calling people “stupid” and such for the playful booing. It was a great game, the team played well, lots of cheers and Hinrich actually had a nice game individually. For as expensive as it is to buy a ticket to a Bulls game and the outrageous prices at the concession stands, it’s pretty much common sense that if you asked people at a Bulls game, I bet 8 out of 10 people who actually paid a ticket to go to the game would not really care about losing out on a Big Mac. It was just a funny moment seeing a career 81% free throw shooter clanking on a free throw for a marketing promotion that ALL the Bulls players are well aware of, that’s it. Spare me the lecture. It’s still a GAME. Enjoy the moment.

Marshall the great thing about written lectures is you can scroll right on by them. My post earlier saying the fans should have cheered the fact they were spared a $3.59 heart attack in a sack was made toungue in cheek. In fact as I watched that free throw clank off the front of the rim I sat cozily in my living room laughing because I knew the boos were coming and so did Hinrich. last night as the bulls buried Miami there were three times the cheers in the United Center really shook the rafters. The first was when Derrick Rose entered the game, the second was the alley-oop by Rose to Tyrus for the dunk and the and one, the third-you guessed it man- when the Bulls hit 100.
Edgar and Keith I always enjoy your posts even when and if I disagree with you because you are true fans. Sometimes I'll admit I like to play devils advocate with ya'll just to provoke a little more detail but I'll have to say I am really disappointed that Culzie had nothing to say on this subject. Maybe he's busy negotiating a deal with McDonalds for free Big Mac's for first time home buyers in Phoenix. LMAO

Tim - you are killing me! I know there is a big mac photo there, but the topic is about freedom of expression, class, culture and yes, sports. Unless you know the Chicago thing, you just could not understand why Chicagoans booed Kirk. But Kirk got it, and rightfully so. A good entertainer - gives the people a great show - See Shaq for reference. Kirk missed his moment. But its cool, because he didn't do it on purpose, and showed contrition.

I am so happy the Bulls beat the brakes off the Heat. It was especially nice to see Kirk and Ben high-fiving a Gordon trey in the 4th. I was at the game last night and it was a glorious experience! I have a buddy who goes in with me once a year for one game. (we have been doing this for about 6 years and started in the 300 level). I sat in the 100 section, courtesy of stubhub.com!!!!! It was magnificent!! The players looked like giants! And I giggled the entire night as I watched those fans working HARD for those tee shirts in the 300 section. The only fans cheering "lets go Bulls" in the 100 and 200 sections were the children for the most part. They were really enjoying themselves and into the promotions. Kids we sat by had Ice Cream and Popcorn and everything. The parents were into the game and cheered the Bulls on. Then they got up and left after halftime, by the end of the 3rd most of those folks were gone. I couldn't believe it! My buddy and I stayed until security asked us to leave. We hung our heads and departed quietly. Until next year... I got a chance to see Dwayne Wade, Luther Head and Derrick Rose on the court at the same time. AND I got my big mac!!!!

Booing over a sandwich is absolutely ridiculous! They won the game! When they paid to go to the game were they paying for the Bulls or spent 50+ for a Big Mac? Instantly the Big Mac became the most expensive sandwich on earth lol! As people have already said, to boo your team on national television is embarrassing and unacceptable especially when they are winning. Dumb....just dumb! Homeless people should boo everytime someone doesn't give them a dollar or some change! No wonder it is so unappealing for top notch players to come and play here. Stupid stuff like this. I have heard it all!

No Marshall, I won't ignore your "lecture". In fact, I find it hilarious when certain bloggers love to show off their literary knowledge by spewing Latin phrases and copy and pasting quotes (isn't that what some call, plagiarism?)... in a sports blog of all places! This is NOT a book club discussion! Are you even a hardcore basketball fan or just a casual Bulls fan, Marshall? I ask because if there's one fact that I know, you're not a regular Bulls blogger here. I am, and as some of the regulars here know, I can be quite confrontational in a conventional SPORTS discussion. Obviously, this discussion is not conventional, but someone calls me out, then I’ll snap back to anyone because I’m a very passionate sports fan. A couple of weeks ago, I attended and did volunteer work at a charity basketball tournament held at Northeastern University in Chicago and I happened to catch the high school girls Championship game bracket. The game was tight all the way through and near the end of the game, the play heated up and there was an altercation between 2 girls from opposing teams. (yes, this was a girls’ basketball game!) No punches were thrown and the altercation didn’t last long at all, but the referee called a foul on one of the players. Well, after the foul was assessed, a man from the bleacher seats stood up, started booing and cursing and then yelled at the officials to throw this girl out of the game and out of the gym. Yes, all this in a high school girls’ game for charity! Talk about ruining the moment on an entertaining close game! Who knows, the guy was probably family of one of the girls on the team, but he looked like a sharp-dressed educated businessman who came to the game straight from work. Point is, to me, this is the type of booing that is out of line and very disturbing, a good topic of discussion about overly passionate fans, regardless of race, class and gender, getting carried away. What happened to Kirk Hinrich was nowhere close to being malicious and should have been a non-story in the local and national media. Unfortunately, Mr. Steve Kashul and Marv Albert chose otherwise.

One other point about the Detroit game that nobody mentioned was
that Tyrus Thomas walked up to Kirk after the first free throw and
said something to him and had a huge smile on his face. I'd like to
think that Thomas told him that the pressure was on and he better
make that second free throw to get to 100 or the fans were going to
boo him out of the stadium. Hopefully that "pressure cooker" moment
will help Kirk knock down both free throws at the end of a game 7
in the playoffs to seal the deal. You never know how these things
will work themselves out.

Tim, I did catch the game last night and I did notice the 3 times
that you mentioned where the crowd "raised the roof".
The best part for me was the standing ovation from the true die
hard fans that stayed until the end.

I knew that not all Bulls fans are ignorant and selfish and they
proved me right last night. My opinion is the ignorant and selfish
ones left early because it was a blow out and I say good riddance.

I agree, the beauty of this life is we get to choose what we read,
listen to and watch. If someone isn't into lectures, the mouse has
this cool thing on it that scrolls you down the page, just like
most TV's nowadays have power, channel and volume buttons on them
but also on the remote control for the lazy ones who don't want to
get off the couch to do it. Last but certainly not least, the radio
has two knobs, one turns it off and the other changes the station!

All I know is, if the Bulls make the playoffs and especially if they get a 7 seed or higher, there are a lot of us, myself at times included, who need to give them some serious credit on putting together a nice little squad and no matter what happens we can be excited for next year with D.Rose as a second year player...and more exp under his belt.


Keith my man sometimes you need to read between the lines. I am well aware of the "Chicago thing". I may live in NC now but I've only been gone from the Chi-town area for 6 years. I've been in the 300 section in the UC and I attended games in the old Stadium before MJ had the place sold out 30 seconds after tickets went on sale for the season. During the Championship years I had to buy tickets for the games played in Indianapolis's Market Square Arena in order to see MJ play because tickets in Chicago were as scarce as a ham sandwich at a bar-mitzpha. Like I said when that second free throw clanked off the front of the rim I laughed knowing the boos were coming and I know Kirk knew it also.
Marshall I'd be willing to bet Tyrus's remark to Kirk was about exactly that. He probably said something like if you miss this one these folks are gonna be eatin White Castles tonight and you're gonna be toast LOL
Edgar you're 100% correct, it's never personal. In fact I think it would be great if sometime a few of the regular bloggers here could manage a block of tickets to a game. Doesn't have to be a Bulls game, I'd even consider (shuddering at the thought though) driving up and attending a game at the Cell, but I'd be wearing Cubbie blue LOL.

You never answered my question before, are you a hardcore Bulls fan or just a casual sports fan? How about you, Romero, were you even at the Big Mac game that Tuesday night at the United Center? Of course not, both of you weren't, yet like many of the self-righteous writers like to do, passing judgment without first, understanding the FACTS and analyzing the ENTIRE story. But alas, that's ok Marshall, just stand in line. You're not the first non-regular sports blogger to try to talk me down with the fancy words and the copy and pastes. More often than not, most usually end up making a fool of themselves with the name calling and stereotyping and coming off as hypocrites (for example, I rarely hear the boo-bird critics say anything about fans booing halftime entertainment acts or criticize the booing towards other fans who participate the games on the court in between the commercial timeouts). And Romero, top notch NBA free agent players won't sign with the Bulls because Bulls' fans boo their own players over a Bic Mac? Yeah, what an astute observation. Boy, it's no wonder I rarely hear from guys like you when I get into a REAL analytical Bulls sports discussion where I'm at my best. Do us all a favor, Marshall, and preach your etiquette guide to fan behavior in another blog topic. It's not gonna work here. Oh, sorry for the bad grammar... I meant, it's not going to work here. My bad.

Tim - that statement wasn't directed at you. After I said you was killing me, I should have started another paragraph. I KNOW you KNOW, fah-show. My bad.

Culzie - right there with you! I gave PAX his due a minute ago. His biggest criticism IMHO was NOT pulling the trigger and doing his part to cultivate the growth of Rose. But he rolled the dice and it paid off big time. He should be applauded, but after the playoffs, he has to bring in a star to compliment Rose. I would get a seasoned STAR (not Bosh). Bulls need someone who can handle the pressure of dueling with the likes of Paul Pierce.

I like Indiana and the Rapters rosters. See that is what your team is supposed to look like lengthwise. Salmons was finally exposed at the 3 spot. He is a fill in, and Deng is the prototype for that position. When or if he ever comes back, Salmons slides over to the two spot and Gordon comes off the bench like Superman coming out of the booth. I know Gordon wont like it, but he will accept it because he will be the man on a winning team. Gordon and Hinrich coming off the bench is going to make the Bulls take off like a rocket. Salmons is going to be even more effective offensively and defensively.

Not a problem Keith we're cool. And finally an appearance from Culzie! My faith is restored. Edgar I wouldn't be too concerned with grammar, I think as bloggers we have a literary licenseto be grammatically incorrect and occasionally mis-spell words and names. After all some of us were raised to be simply hukt on foniks LMAO.

I think they were booing because they wanted the taco, like before.
