Hall of Fame third baseman George Kell, who played late in his career with the White Sox, died today.

He played 71 games for the South Siders in 1954 and then played the entire '55 season with the Sox, hitting .312 and driving in 81 runs.

As I was looking up a pic on Kell, I saw this Wheaties trading card that's pretty cool. It also features Chicago native, DePaul star and Hall of Famer George Mikan.

Here's the AP story:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Hall of Fame third baseman and longtime broadcaster George Kell has died at 86.

A funeral home in Newport, Ark. said he died Tuesday. Kell was severely injured in a car crash in 2004 but was able to walk with a cane about six months later.

Kell outdueled Ted Williams for the 1949 American League batting title, hitting .3429 while Williams finished at .3427.

Kell played 14 years in the AL with Philadelphia, Detroit, Boston, White Sox and Baltimore. He hit more than .300 nine times and had a career average of .306. He was selected to play in 10 All-Star games. After his playing days, Kell was a Detroit Tigers broadcaster from 1959 to 1996.

I was in the heavens when Kell was on the scene. His numbers say he was a great one.
