What was your take on Alex Rodriguez's admission? Here's a collection of what sports writers were saying about A-Rod as well as Peter Gammons.
The Trib's Rick Morrissey says he's not sure what to make of the story, but he can't look away.
Phil Rogers writes that we shouldn't suspend our disbelief because we still may not know the truth.
Fred Mitchell says Ernie Banks' 47 home runs in 1958 should be recognized as the record for shortstops.
The New York Times reports that the Yankees are rallying behind A-Rod and are glad he came clean.
The New York Daily News' Bob Raissman rips Peter Gammons for being too soft on A-Rod.
The New York Post's Joel Sherman wasn't crazy about the interview and insists there better not be any more revelations.
NY Daily news column was spot on - Gammons interview was similar to questions Lovie gets on Mondays.
NY Post...Joel Sherman...right..and it better not snow any more this year. What a dummy
He was soft on A-Rod.
If you are going to put this guys name out there for the public then show us every name that tested positive.
The public loves this kind of stuff but only if it involves certain players. Will anyone really care if and when Gary Sheffield's name comes out as a cheater? No, because he has been labeled as a jerk for years and the day time drama story is not as juicy there.
The 1970s Steelers were roided to the gills and no one seems to be asking for their trophies back or saying that they have really won 2 Super Bowls and not 6.
Why is that?
This is crazy. Another overhyped story. I took my time to respond on this topic, but this is my take: First, I wasn't surprised at all. Plus, I really don't understand how anyone can even remotely accept his "apology" in the first place when, 1) A-Rod only came clean AFTER the fact, after his name was leaked and reported by S.I. or else he would never have admitted anything at all. 2) it took him 3 or 4 days to respond after obviously going back to his agent, to his lawyer/s or his p.r. manager for help in finalizing a written and memorized statement. 3) Of all things, hand picking Peter Gammons to conduct a scripted interview in which any intelligent person would know that Gammons would NEVER in a million years even remotely try to put A-Rod on the spot with tough questions. And worst of all 4) he outright lied on 60 Minutes denying steroid use with an absolute straight face. Ridiculous. And I love how he answered some of the Gammons questions by starting off with "To be honest,..." blah blah blah. Second chance, people say?
For me, it doesn't matter. The problem is so deep enough as it is that there is no way this issue will ever be cleaned up in any sport. Baseball fans are already pretty much 50/50 on wishing their baseball team have A-Rod on the roster regardless if he takes the juice or not. They'll come to the ballpark anyway to cheer him on or boo him outright, either way they'll be paying to go watch him play. I don't really care about the players using the enhancers. In this case, I just want to see Bud Selig exposed ridiculed like these guys are.
I have a feeling A-Rod's people demanded they got to pick who got to interview him. Gammons is so old and unintimidating that there was no way he was going to forcefully control the interview. Plus, he has been a past apologist for steroid-users in baseball. I think he's a good writer, but he lobbed way too many softballs out there for A-Rod and didn't follow up enough after some of A-Rod's lame responses. The whole thing is just a circus, much like A-Rod's career.
what do I think?....they are all fake...all of them...none of them should be given any credit for any accomplishments...their names kept out of the record books...and their busts kept out of cooperstown...fictional characters...simple as that
at least Pete Rose accomplished being the best ever...and he's banned for life?...for betting he'd win?...Selig is a homo
On the other side of the token...it (no roids) makes me sad...I would have loved to let them keep injecting roids....my dream of the 750ft bomb...is going, going, gone....watching someone tag from third and get thrown out from the warning track..."He's OUT?!?!"...well, that's over, too...and Every team having a Nolan Ryan...well...I'm not gonna get that either (it was close,tho)...at least Robin Ventura still flinches at "Hi Nolan!"
Baseball is boring...but that's the American League's fault...and if have to explain why, well..then it's your fault, too
"How about an orange baseball?"...Charlie O'Finley, 1973 (LaPorte Resident, no less)
I thought that I posted a lengthy reply to one of these baseball related threads, but it's disappeared.
Now I've forgotten what I wrote.
Must not have been that good to begin with.
Oh well.
