Need another reason to go to a Blackhawks game? How about a million of them.
In what may be some kind of cosmic sign that this really is a special season for the Blackhawks, one fan already has won $1 million, and another was just three seconds off from winning on Sunday.
The Hawks and the Illinois Lottery put together a contest that when a Hawks player scores at the 10:00 mark of the second period, one fan wins $1 million. Can you imagine the odds of that happening? It took less than a week into the promotion for the first fan - Cary Stolarczyk, a first-year Blackhawks' season ticket holder - to win $1 million on January 19.
Jonathan Toews (pictured) nearly made it two fans Sunday, but he scored at 9:57 of the second period.
Good luck getting tickets to a Hawks game this season, but if you do, don't leave your seat in the middle of the second period. Might be fun to watch.
Gig, your wish came true with a Blackhawks topic here! Good job, my man. See, you whine enough in the posts and you'll get your wish eventually from Mr. Modrowski. haha
That being said though, I agree about this hockey team. They are still a long way from being a perennial elite NHL team, but they have been fun to watch grow dating to last year. Whoever the marketing geniuses are in the Blackhawks' organization deserve raises, that's for sure. It's just too bad that as good as Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are (Chris Versteeg included), none of them are in the class of Alexander Ovechkin or Sidney Crosby, but the team is fun to watch nevertheless.
I don't know anything about Hockey or Golf. I guess you have to have a lot of money to play them. I heard golf costs a grip to play! Man, why don't brothers play? Are there any brothers in hockey? Do hockey players make good money?
Keith,
Here's just some "brothers" who play in the NHL:
1. Jerome Iginla (perennial All-Star, Calgary Flames)
2. Dustin Byfuglien (talented forward for your very own Blackhawks)
3. George LaRocque (enforcer, Montreal Canadiens)
4. Mike Grier (San Jose)
5. Anson Carter
6. Donald Brashear
7. Bryce Salvador
8. Trevor Daley
9. Shawn Belle
10. Kevin Weekes
11. Anthony Stewart
12. Ray Emery
13.Johnny Oduya
14.Jamal Mayers
Another one to keep in mind from the past was the former very good goaltender for Wayne Gretzky's Oilers, Grant Fuhr.
The 'Hawks have another one working his way through the ranks in Akim Aliu (born in Nigeria).
Yeah, Edgar, I did get my wish! I'll savor this one while it lasts!
Hockey players make a decent living and probably very, very, very few, if any, deal with steroids. Moreover, they tend to be really good guys away from the rink.
Hi Keith -
Um.... there IS a brother who plays golf.
Gig and others may know more details but I can tell you that there are about 25 current black players in the NHL, including our own Blackhawk, Dustin Byfuglien, a Minnesota native who is 6'3 and someone I personally would never want to dance with on the ice. There is at least one black player in the Hockey Hall - Grant Fuhr.
Yes, hockey costs money but I am not one who knows enough to draw comparisons with other sports. When I played, our biggest expense was always renting the ice. You can always find great used equipment and decent skates, although the elite players will get the customized stuff.
Cactus League Opener is tomorrow!!!! Clayton Richard on the mound to start.
Whatever - I won a free Big Mac on Valentine's Day because they scored with under 2 minutes in a period. Reason enough for me to go!
Keith I'm not a brother and I can attest to golf being expensive. As a matter of fact several years ago I quit playing golf and started hunting and fishing more often because no matter how long I boiled those damn golf balls they just never got soft enough to eat.
Dustin Byfuglien (pronounced BUFF-lin) is not only 6'3" but also 247 lbs.! Yes, he would be a nice-sized linebacker in the NFL.
I just wish he'd make his presence known a bit more often on the ice. They could really use that.
Thanks for the info Gig and Bubba's Mom. I knew about Dustin Byfuglien (bufflin), but I didn't know he was a brother? Some of those names look suspect. I happen to know hes a good player too. I have been trying to get into the Hawks. I wish ALL Chicago teams well, including the Wolves that don't get any love. I even root for Chicago State!
Tim - I am dying! A brother I work with is addicted to Golf. He swears its the best thing under the sun. But he told me, its expensive and not for someone on a budget. I respectfully recieved that as my cue to stay away from it.
And Julie you were missed by me also.
Wow, that was a nice vacation. Anyway, Hawks games can be pretty good. I particlarly liked the Rangers vs. Hawks game from a few weeks back.
yes...Go Blackhawks!!...G'Bye Rex!!
go hawks
