A YouTube tribute to Derrick Rose

| | Comments (20)

The kid is unbelievable. He's already made more highlights than any player I covered in five years beginning in 1999-2000.

Derrick Rose's crossover Sunday when he broke Andre Miller's ankles is one of the best I've ever seen.

He just won Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month, and there's no reason to believe he won't end up with rookie of the year.

He's making his teammates better, and his teammates seem to have bought into the fact that the rookie is the team leader. The Bulls winning three games on the annual circus trip is evidence of that.

The move on Miller wasn't Rose's only highlight crossover:

Leandro Barbosa found out how explosive Rose can be to the hoop:

Gordon's alley-oop to Rose:

Rose's debut:

A Rose mix:

And get to know him.

His favorite sports movie?

I actually saw that entire Bulls vs. Sixers game last Sunday afternoon since the Bears were not on until the evening and witnessed all thos highlight plays live. The block was actually incredible while the crossover play was more comical because Miller didn't just break his ankles on the play, he fell on his a--. What more can we say about Rose? The kid's a player and he's only a rookie. I remember Jordan making tons of highlight reel plays in his rookie season as well. Of course Rose will only get better as he matures and gains more experience in the NBA game, but the only question mark is if he has the drive to fully succeed and bring his game over the top as most special players do. I think he'll get there eventually. Even Chris Paul didn't make this kind of an impact on his team during his rookie year that Rose is doing right now for the Bulls. Good stuff.

Edgar I also witnessed that game. The Block was Scottie-esque, the Cross - BETTER than Iverson's (because Miller fell), and the Alley-oop Vince-like! A ROOKIE point guard catching a alley-oop with one hand on the break!!!! You have got to be kidding!!! A good player has one of these highlights in a game, but this was the stuff of stars. This was a virtuoso! A Van Gogh! I know I am jumping the gun a little, but excuse me, its been a while. And I know the genuine article when I see it. Ai can cross with the best of him, but that block and that oop - nope. Isaiah was as vast and could score, but that block and that oop - nope. ONLY SCOTTIE could do what Rose did in that game and Scottie could not cross like that. Um smellin the ROSE baby! Um smellin the Rose! MEASELY my fanny!

I expected Rose to be a great player but not this fast.
It has been a long time since we have seen a player like this in town.
I believe that Matt Forte is going to be a very good all around player and maybe even semi-great but a player like Rose only comes around once every 20 years or so.
He is the real deal and fans around the NBA are going to look at the Bulls with envy.
How many assists would he have is the front court was not so worthless?
Get this kid some help up front right now because he is ready to lead this team. Pretty amazing for a guy his age and just think how good he will be in a couple of years.
Michael Beasley who?

I also watched the game and almost wet my drawers when Miller went down on the cross-over and the look on his face after the block was priceless. Rose is quickly becoming all-star caliber. Now to get others like Hughes to quit taking ill-advised shots and begin showing some consistant transition defense and we could start talking deep play-off runs again.

Uh, highlights? A block from behind on a layup? And a crossover dribble where he goes down the lane and gets his shot blocked? I guess if you are used to watching NU, Depaul, loyola, and the baby bulls the last 8 years, you haven't seen much to compare it too. Rose is talented, but he's not much bigger than Ben Gordon, and he can't shoot. He is much more fun to watch than Hinrich pounding the ball but he's just a point guard. Teams don't win with just point guards, even a star point guard can't carry a team, ask Oscar Robertson, remember him, probably not. He was twice the player Rose will ever be, and was probably better than Jordon.

This is certainly one time when you can truly believe the hype. Paxson has one mandate: get him some help FAST! He needs that help so that he doesn't fade back to the pack or lose his competitive aggressiveness. Its difficult to work hard when you know its all in vain. Malaise is contagious. And that spark that only comes from winning can be snuffed out by a steady diet of losing seasons. Paxson, you can turn it all around by simply getting at least ONE star in this place to compliment Rose. The rest will take care of itself. We as fans in the city of mediocrisy will give you more time and even forgive your mistakes. We just want to return to competitiveness and respectability. We want to come to the UC and see Chicago Style Defense and heart. Thats all. In spite of last nights debacle, I remain hopeful and definitely enjoy my look through this Rose Colored Glass.

Touche'! Didn't take long for Miller to pay the Bulls back. Ben Gordon played matador defense all night, the Bulls played like they were at a mandatory midnight scrimmage, and if they continue to play passive 'D' and constantly give up easy baskets, to go with numerous, unforced turnovers, we're in for a SHORT season.

I had no idea Rose was that fast. Deceptive! Even his jumper looks far ahead of expectations. Now if only we could get;

1) Noah out of his two left feet syndrome

2) Thomas to get off 'CLOUD 9'

3) Dang to develop past the 'SLASHER' stage

4) Nocioni to fall 'out of love' with his jumper

5) Hughes to take the blinders off

6) Gordon to shoot smarter (O.K., that's not TOO MUCH to ask)

7) Gray to go after every ball like it's the last Big Mac at an after hour binge table

8) One big body to roll to the basket every time Rose penetrates

Once the defense learns to clamp down for 48, things will turn around. All sharp athletes know that good things happen when you play tough 'D'.

I'm just worried we may have too many dull knives in the drawer.

Willie you lost me at "cant carry a team" and "better than Jordan". "Better than Jordan" is a phrase ommitted by the NBA and most periodicals. The player know as "Jordan" is currently defined as "best ever". And as for the phrase "point can't carry a team", please see, Magic Johnson and Isaiah Thomas for reference to that phrase.

Now Rose is not there yet, but come on....

I don't know what all the hype is about. Rose looks like a first round draft pick should look. He looks like he will be able to play the point too, but I wouldn't want him to have to score 20 a game, that is a lot to ask for a point guard. Well, that is if you want him to play any defense and get assists. That's what most point guards do, stop the ball and get assists.

If the bulls offense relies on Rose to penetrate and to score, then the bulls will be getting beat in transition and be losing a lot of games. But you can still enjoy watching Rose. I guess after watching Hinrich and Gordon try and play the point probably forgot what a point guard looks like. Watch Chris Paul then you'll remember maybe.

Oh, anyone see the knicks point guard set a team assist record, that is more than clyde ever had, 22 assists with the team scoring 138 and winning. Now, what would the bulls have done if they ever had a guard like that? Demand they get some scorers for him like everyone is asking for rose? Or just blame the point guard for the rest of the teams deficiencies. Oh well, have to see how long Rose lasts in chicago, driving and getting decked in the lane won't be long, doesn't he already have bad knees and a bad back? Better enjoy him while he lasts.

My guess here is that Willie over there is not all too impressed with Derrick Rose, eh? He even had to go all the way back to the annals of Oscar Robertson for comparison. You really think that the Big "O" would have averaged almost a triple double in today's era of the NBA? I don't think so, but hey, just my opinion. Wow, it sure takes a lot to impress this guy. He's already comparing Rose in just his rookie season to Robertson's lifetime stats! And don't assume that some of the regular basketball bloggers here are not old school and don't know their own basketball history. It's amusing when some of you assume that.

Willie, most of us all know that Derrick Rose will need more help on this team to Championship contenders! Just enjoy the ride while the kid grows into his game and becomes a perennial all-star! I mean really, give the kid a break! If not, then I'll be more than happy to to send you a copy of a book of the Life and Times of Oscar Robertson Biography for you to display in your basketball shrine at home.

And Anthony Navarro, my fellow Gordon Tech grad, all of your points have already been covered in prior posts long before even when Scott Skiles was fired from the Bulls. ;) This is a rebuilding team, remember that! New coaching staff, new offense and defense philosophies -- it's going to take time for the entire team to gel. Don't give up on them and continue the support!

Sounds sort of desperate to me, has it been so long since Chicago had any good basketball players? Be better to not put any pressure on the kid and let him develop for a few years. Not like the bulls are going to win anything unless they sign a big free agent after next season. And what are the chances of that?

Oh, Deng is best in motion offense, he has soccer instincts and no one on one moves. So is pretty limited in spot up or slashing games. He'd be a good player in an offense like the suns run or maybe the jazz even. With Gordon and hughes holding the ball, and no low post players, Deng has very few offensive options to play off of, except spot up, or dribble drive. He's a wasted player with the bulls, may as well trade him.

Edgar, unfortunately I have little time to read blogs anymore. I catch the caption and go from there. Also, my thoughts have no bearing on Pre-Skiles talk. They are in response to the last few Bulls games I've caught, but you bring up a good point.

How long does it take a new staff to instill defensive intensity?

I say preseason. No less, no more!

I could live with these guys forcing the dribble on 'O' and dribbling off their foot, or right into three defenders, but defensive intensity is driven.

And by the way, if all these points have been covered in "posts long before even Scott Skiles was fired", the fact nothings changed does not bode well for the new philosophies. Where's the philosophy in getting someone to practice basic footwork, roll to the basket, develop new moves, take it to the hole every now and then, pass, think before you shoot, go agressively after EVERY loose ball. I've been around this stuff way too long to take your philosophy comment to heart for the basics I've mentioned.

Now, if we're talking team 'D' or offensive motion, I hear ya, we are a team in transition.

TRANSITION, not rebuilding!

Anthony,

Yes, I was talking TEAM D and offensive motion. All that requires chemistry and cohesiveness of course. As for rebuilding vs. transition, I say rebuilding because the Bulls didn't "replace" Skiles, they started over with a brand new coaching staff, assistants included. Guys like Myers and Wilhelm are still on the team to lesser roles as assistants. To me, that's not transition, that's starting all over again. They drafted a kid #1 overall and are basically thrusting him into a leadership position as a rookie. I believe that the Bulls are making us believe that they're only in transition because they want us to think that the team can get back to the playoffs again as legitimate title contenders as quickly as this season. I don't even think we're close, especially when guys like Gordon, Gooden and Hughes are basically short term . I don't believe that management expects them to stay here long term. I wasn't knocking you earlier with the highlighted comments, Anthony, I was just making fun of it, that's all. But really, just 1 preseason only and you expect chemistry on both sides of the floor to gel that quickly? When I watch the games, the team doesn't lack effort. What most of the guys lack is toughness and attitude. It looks like most of the guys are trying their best, but guys like Thomas and Noah often look confused on court. They're probably trying to soak in too much too soon. Vinny and the assistants must continue to brainwash their minds that their roles are to bang and just go after the ball first and then utilize their "other" talents separately. Keep it simple for them. The development of those 2 guys are key to this team. They can't just sit on the bench or else they'll never learn to play with Rose.

Rose's rookie stats so far as probably some of the best in NBA history. Anyone who isn't impressed by this kid is super jaded. I mean 18 pt, 6 assists a game for a rookie is more than impressive.

His rookie stats are way better than Stockton's, Deron Williams and Steve Nash....I'm not saying he's better than those three but come one, he is obviously a special player.

If he's this good now, imagine in 2-3 more years...plus his jumper is already way better than Jason Kidd's ever was. His only weakness is defense and interior passing.

If Tyrus can have some games like he did last night(14 pts,13 rebs) by just staying active, being aggressive and not shooting long jumpers, then this team can be a real factor.

YES C SMOOVE!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm thinking, that we need to form a special Joint Chicago Spots Recruiting Research & Review Committee, that basically TELLS the Chicago spots owners, who we approve and dont approve of them drafting, trading for or signing.

Keith, Hitman and Myself will sit on top of the Review Board, and all decisions will get scrutiny from the best scouting staff EVER.

Keith, we need to draft up a Constitution or Mission Statement...

Can you whip up something?

All this Rose hype reminds me of how all the locals were raving about Eddie Curry. Just imagine how good he'll be in 3 to 4 years. Well, imagine that, not very good. I really hope Rose does better but doubt he has much of a chance with the bulls. Unless the league has already rigged a deal, to make up for the bulls getting stiffed in the Garnett deal. If the bulls can land Lebron then there will be playoffs hoops in chicago, other wise probably 3 or 4 years, a new gm, and a couple more coaches away from winning anything. If that happens doubt Rose stays beyond his rookie contract.

So, you still havn't named a team that won anything that was carried by a point guard. Magic and Isaiah just prove my point. Oscar and Magic both won with the same guy, different name. Isaiah just had joe, vinnie and bill, plus a few others. Point guards who try to carry teams wind up as undersized 2 guards, see iverson and anderson for example, don't win much either. Doesn't mean they're bad players or not fun to watch, just aren't effective point guards.

Rose is a good player, but if people expect him to be the main player in a championship team I think they'll be disapointed. He'll need either one superstar or two great players to win. If he was a better shooter maybe one other great player would be enough, but i haven't seen it.

And Jordon was a bigger marketing phenom, and got more exposure and a boost from "jordon rules", but O was the better all round basketball player. Chamberlin was probably the greatest of all time, but he wasn't as skilled all round as Oscar, free throws for instance, but he didn't need to be. Jordon got to be league icon for his era, but when Oscar played it was the guy on the nba logo, so come on...

Willie, I don't know how you are comparing Oscar to MJ. Averaging a triple double is huge, but how many ships does Oscar have? See in the NBA - WINNING is the ultimate measurement of the game. The great Oscar should have more than one ship - especially in that era. And statwise, I really don't think Oscar measures up. Even on the streets if you are about to run a full court and Oscar and Jordan are standing there, tell me how you pick O over MJ. Chamberlin was a beast, but he didn't win anything either.

And if Magic didn't carry LA who I believe won without Kareem, I don't know who did. And NOONE I know will argue that Isaiah Thomas let the Detrain. EVERYONE has help, but I think you are having a hard time identifying who is the major contributer. Its a given to say - without Magic LA doesnt win. Without Isaiah, Detroit does not win. Iverson is not even in the same volume as an Isaiah. It takes more than just scoring points to LEAD. Its not that you score - its WHEN. Ask KOBE.

I made that D-Rose mix! Be sure to check out my other ones, which have better/ more recent footage.
