Cubs general manager Jim Hendry is reminding me of a mad scientist, tinkering with the chemistry of a 97-win team.

Hendry traded

why would the cubs trade DeRosa, that made no sense to me, the only way this works out as a positive is if the cubs get peavy or another star player, if they don't, the cards or brewers will catch us next year

what the hell!?!? this better equate to a Peavy or Roberts trade bc we are worse off today than we were yesterday...

Lets just hope the Lab doesn't blow up! And I hope the monster Hendry is building is in the form of a pure heat rotation pitcher.

95 days and counting down.

GO CUBS in '09

The Cubs will miss his leadership the most, yes, but the guy had literally a career year last season. I doubt he'd get close to living up to the expectations Cubs' fans will put on him. I know he's a fan favorite, but if this clears space for a Bradley or even a Lowe, then it's a good move. I'm sure the ladies are most upset

I hate this move...... Mark you will be missed. Go out there and beat up on those "Dirt Sox" on the South-side.

Hendry, I hope this move is opening up a move for - Roberts / Bradly / Peavy or any combination of the two.

Nice move on getting rid of Jason, though. Thanks Jim

All good moves, so far. Now sign Bradley, and deal for peavey or better yet, roberts from a position of having met all your needs.

Dumping Marquis salary is a big plus, even if vizquik never pitches for the cubs, they may just deal him on to balmer or Sundaglo.

Miles is a good pickup he is a true utility player, who isn't overpaid, and doesnt have a big head and think he should be a starter, or think he is the team leader and clubhouse spokesman, or blow an easy grounder double play ball in the biggest game of the teams season. In other words, Miles is a huge up grade over derossa. Derossa is a stiff and good riddance. The only ones hyping him are sox fans and media shills, the same ones who blathered about Jaque Jones being the cubs MVP and a great player, and also how great Michael Barret was and what a team leader he was. Of course, Jones and Barrett are both out of baseball now, playing in mexico somewhere.
Derossa won't be missed either, and the real cubs team leaders will be glad he is gone.

Good work so far Hendry!

This almost brought a tear to my eye with trading DeRosa. It is definitely a down-grade in getting Aaron Miles, but he seems serviceable and we will be happy if he puts up last years numbers. But I agree with Steve, this better be a part of getting Peavy.

I would much rather have Abreu then Bradley, but Bradley is very good WHEN healthy. And NOOOOOOOOO, the Cards and Brewers won't catch us this year. Both teams are much worse now then they were last year. The next best team in the division is the Astros and they still aren't near the Cubs talent.

I think the Cubs are just putting themselves in position to land a few more players. DeRosa was an excellant player. However, getting Miles made Derosa expendable for less money. That means more Money available to get one or two more big players such as Bradley and Peavy. By the way, Miles can be a leadoff hitter. Time will tell if this pays off but, Jim Hendry is doing what he needs to do to keep this team on top. Good job Jim.

both of these moves equal jake peavy.... after all, they need another starter with marquis gone.... you can't put marshall in the rotation fully with harden's injury history and no other lefty in the bullpen....

mark my words, jake peavy to the cubs soon to be announced

For all those weeping about losing Derossa, he wasn't that good. Don't believe me? Look what the cubs were able to get for him after 2 months of trying to deal him, 3 minor leaguers. Not even one major league player, just a few prospects, a couple of class a guys, nothing much really.

If Derossa was such a big time player, where was the demand for him? Nowhere, because he is what he has always been, a decent utility bench player. That's it. Oh, he happened to be a good talker and liked to talk to the media whenever he could, so guess the media will miss having a source in the cubs clubhouse. His teammates won't miss having him yapping all the time.

I think this move was a good one IF we get PEAVY. Miles is a good player but we didnt need him. We need a top of the lineup guy who will get on base and he's not it. I do think bradley will be a good pickup,he will give us a fire that lineup needed. I wish they would trade soriano and hoffpaur to the angels for figgins, kendrick and ervin santana and then sign dunn with bradley and peavy. THAT WOULD BE A GREAT OFF SEASON.

This is horrible, i understand that dero was no more than a bench man and was in his final year of his contract, but you don't trade away a guy like derro who was so consistent and reliable for simply prospects. this especially, when you had a chance to get people like brian roberts, who definetly would've helped last year, peavy, who would've definitely solidifed the rotationa dn put the cubs' starting five at a whole new level. now, we must get either one seeing that dero was the only obstacle in acquiring either of the two in the past 2 seasons.

we also need a little more help in the bullpen, for which i recommend signing a decent reliver in someone like arthur rhodes or others

as far as left handed hitters go, don't go after abreu, which i'v heard for a while, go after bradley and get him in the fold asap! resign edmonds for a year, who was great help as far as leadership and numbers

soriano in left, reed johnson and edmonds platooning center bradley in right, full-time with some help from fukudome if injured, lee @ first, roberts? or miles :( at second, theriot at second, a-ram @ third, soto behind the plate

starting five: Peavy, Dempster, Big Z, Harden, and Lilly (Marshall and Smardjiza filling in when nec.)

bullpen: hart, marmol, gregg :((((, rhodes-like man?, wuertz, and cotts, with marshall and smardjiza when not filling in

How's that?

I for one am shocked right now. This guy brings alot to a team. His versatility being one of the bigger things. Miles is not the run producer that Mark is and will be a part time player. When RAM was out he filled in very well at 3B. Want to get Fontenot some AB's, move Mark to the OF. Soriano on the DL, Mark goes to LF and fills in well at any of those slots. As Bobby Cox said, Mark is a professional hitter. For those excited about Bradley, look up some numbers, he played very few games in the OF and DH'd over 100 games. HE hit much better in Texas than on the road. Mark has been far from a stiff and the person that said it is clueless. IF Mark and Marquis were dealt to get the money for Peavy I'll agree to this. Otherwise right now, granted there is tons of time before the 2003 season, I am not in agreement on this deal. I'll agree with Steve Stone on this one. Miles is a part time player with no pop and not very good in the field. There has to be more to the deal as far as strategy.

Couple things. First off, even with the prospects this is a mistake. Aaron Miles doesn't begin to compare to Derosa by any stretch except he had the fortune of riding Larussa's coattails to that one World Series win.

Ryan from Wisco: A career season? Are you nuts?? What about the year before that? Career years dont happen that many times in a row.

Getting Gathright might've helped our baserunning lack, and the three prospects should help us long term, but how does degrading to Aaron Miles help us in the now? I'm cringing in fear of the day they announce Milton Bradley as the newest Cub. Why cant they just spend money and go after Adam Dunn!?

The Angels would have to under some kind of illicit influence if they gave up Figgins, Kendrick and E. Santana for Soriano and Hoffpaur.

Mark DeRosa was one of my favorite Cubs and there is no way I trade him for a bunch of minor league kids that may or may not make the bigs. I DO NOT want Bradley. He is a disaster waiting to happen. You know why people loved the '69 Cubs and that era's teams? It was because not only were they pretty good(not quite good enough in the end), but they were good guys you could root for. Besides Theriot, Soto, Fontenot, Marmol, and Reed Johnson( maybe Derrick Lee) who can you say you really like on this bunch?

More like a Meth lab.
If he brings in Bradley and it blows up then Hendry better pretend that he did not watch the 2008 Dallas Cowboys season and had no idea what could go wrong.
I agree with Steve in NC because if this does not lead to getting Peavy or Roberts then it was a dumb move and was more about getting attention than anything else.
Not that DeRosa was Mark Teixeira (who was not good enough for the Cubs to pursue by the way) but they got nothing in return but wishes.

kj sez: "granted there is tons of time before the 2003 season"

Not if you use Mr. Peabody's "Way Back Machine".

*sorry ... I couldn't resist*

I'm now a Cleveland fan!!

Go Wood and DeRosa!!!!

Go Go White Sox!!! Bad Bad Move. Why mess with a 97 win team..... Mark is one of the best utility players in the league. Santo is having nightmares. This is the year!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, forgot over 100 years!!!!!!!

I liked DeRosa, but Bradley and Miles together constitute a definite upgrade. I don't really think the Cubs need another starting pitcher, but Peavy would certainly be a great addition. Getting back into the Cub scenario after the Bears' debacle is a pleasant change. Maybe the Bears should play 162 games to earn their salaries.

I don't understand how Bradley is an upgrade at any position.
He's a DH moving to a national league team. The guy is always hurt or suspended. This could be a Dennis Rodman-like pick-up or it could be disastrous.
I, for one, believe it will be disastrous.
The Cubs needed Derosa's leadership and bat more than Bradley's me-first attitude.
Miles is a downgrade (and only a year younger than DeRo). They already have a left-handed unused bat in the form of Fontenot. Maybe they should let him lead off again.
The one thing that kills me about the DeRo deal is that they traded the only guy who consistently hit in the playoffs. While Alfonso was swinging at balls that a sand-wedge couldn't catch, Dero was getting on base or popping a home run to give the Cubs their only lead.
If they really wanted to upgrade, they should have dumped D.Lee, went after Texiera, and tinkered from there.
They're overhauling a 97-win team. I wouldn't mind Roberts or Peavy, but I really shudder at the thought of Bradley in Cubbie Blue.

I liked Derossa too, although when he was getting interviewed all the time by the media he sounded slightly unctuous. Then there was the time there were Derossa feature articles in both chicago papers on the same day, one by Missy and one by Carol. These are things that make you say hmmm. Perhaps Derossa was going for clubhouse Miss Congeniality award? Could it be that Dero self promoted himself right out of town?

Soriano..choke
Ramirez...choke
Fukudome..will never hit a breaking ball and will never see another fastball...worst all-star ever...needs more Calgon...how much Yen was spent for the big Fuku?

Kerry Wood?...stupid move

The whole city has turned into Rex Grossman...Gee..Ay...Why

I think Hendry is starting to lose it.
First of all, Kerry Wood didn't want to leave and would have played for anything. He should have won the come-back player award.
Then,Hendry gets rid of Derosa!!! Is he nuts?? Mark was one of the most valueable cub we had in a long time.Multi-positioned player, career year. And now traded. That's crazy.
I would have gotten rid of Fukodome, after all,he did turn out to be a bust.Sat most of the time getting paid all that money. Cubs version of wall street.

This is Jim Hendry's equivalent to Lovie telling fans to trust him, Bob Babich will be "much" better than Rivera.

First Wood, now DeRo...Cleveland, here I come. :(
