Is "Weis Watch" on?

| | Comments (26)

Neil Hayes wrote a column today in which he said the "Weis Watch" has begun at Notre Dame.

I'm not sure how many ND haters - or Irish fans for that matter - would be sad to see Charlie go.

Neil points out Weis hasn't done much more than Willingham or Davie after the same amount of time. These are his guys, and there are no excuses.

The most damning stat is Notre Dame is 1-15 in its last 16 games against winning teams under Weis.

So will Notre Dame can him? He's got a lot of money left on a long-term contract, which was done to prevent NFL teams from plucking him away. Wonder how many people think that would happen now, even if Weis were unemployed.

I don't see the Irish firing Weis during this season. What's the point? And Weis still is a good recruiter.

But Notre Dame will bite the bullet on a long-term deal if it believes it's for the good of its football program. The question is how much heat is Weis getting from the alumni.

It's not an extremely patient bunch, as Willingham could attest.

The "Weis Watch" may be on, but I'm not sure it will result in anything before the season is over - at the earliest.

That is hilarious how you have Willingham's photo up there. I am cracking up!!!! Will looks like he wants to steal on Weiss. Man I am in tears! Weiss looks like and is chilling like Rodney Dangerfield.

Are you serious? Do you follow college football? Weiss is has 2 years minimum, and he'd have to really be awful not to get more.

Just another example of the Suntimes trying to fire up a fan base to sell papers. Where's the "Zook Watch" article? When is this paper going to fold, and put us out of our misery?

Roman responds: Do you think he deserves two more years?

Depends how they play next year. This year has seen a very young team blow decent leads against 2 good teams, a loss to a good Mich. St. team, and a very uninspired loss to BC. They have to win 3 of 4 of those same situations next year when they are a year older. If they don't, perhaps, the conversations start then. To write articles about firing Weiss is a gimmick, not news. Let's face it, Zook doesn't get that treatment because Notre Dame is Notre Dame, not because he is more deserving of keeping his job than Weiss.

Seriously? You guys honestly don't watch ND on a regular basis to make the statements your making that they are young and give him 2 more years! He is 27-19 0-2 in bowls...Here is a list of 5 head coaches hired at the same time as Chucky.

*Les Miles(LSU):40-9 3-0 in bowls and 2007 National Champions
*Urban Meyer(Florida):39-9 2-1 in bowls and 2006 National Champions
*Kyle Whittingham(Utah): 34-14 3-0 in bowls
**CHARLIE WEIS(Notre Dame)**:27-19 0-2 in bowls
*Tyrone Willingham(Washington):11-34 NO BOWL APPEARANCES

Its kinda sad that the 2 coaches with the lowest winning percentage not to mention coaches with 0 bowl wins are ND's current coach and former coach! Its pathetic and something needs to be done...

He must've been listening to Cowland Cowherd, cause he said the exact same thing today.

You can't compare Zook to Weis for one reason! Expectations. Notre Dame has set the bar very high in regards to what they expect from the football program. The expectations are considerably lower based on the history of the Illini football program. Not that I agree with this per se, but this is the reality. The arrogance that is Notre Dame has created this mess (specifically fans and alumni, NBC), and they are to blame, along with Weis. He is a grown man, he knew what he was getting into, and he signed on for it. He could have stayed with the Patriots, but chose not to do so. He claimed at the time, this was his dream job, and his background would lead the program back to respectability. Zook, on the other hand, has great recruiting skills, but suspect coaching skills, so say the experts. Well, with credentials like that, who would expect them to win 9 to 10 games. As a fan, I would like to see it, but unless Zook surrounds himself with better co-ordinators, they will continue to struggle. And yes, Zook should probably be on the hot seat if they have another year like this one in 09. So Domer fans, deal with it. You laid the groundwork for this, now shut your pie holes, and sit back and watch.

Most Norte Dame fans are lost in the past like Tom Drysdale. This guy has been one of the most over rated coaches I ever seen. Name a top ten team Norte Dame has beaten since Weiss has been at Norte Dame. Come to think of it I cant even think of a top twenty team. All of the mostly racist Norte Dame fans continue to blame Ty Willingham saying he was a bad coach and recruiter and all he did was recruit all the players Weiss made his fortune on while winning all those games his first season. This guy was given credit for mmaking Tom Brady great and for making Brady Quinn a first round draft pick and in reality all he ever did for Quinn was schedule bad teams so Quinn could throw a lot of passes. Note to the honest Norte Dame fans and staff you deserve this how you did Willingham.

Understand that all of those coaches inheireted solid programs too. Solid programs that do not have to worry about the academic requirements.
*Les Miles inheireted a LSU team stacked with talent from it's previous coach Nick Saban who was 48-16 (3-2 in bowl games). All he had to do was keep the ship floating.
*Urban Meyer was a hot coach with an exciting offense going to a school Florida in a warm weather State. They were only 3 years removed from Steve Spurrier.
*Kyle Whittingham again took over a program Urban Meyer had built up, all he had to do was keep the ship floating.
*Charlie Weis took over a Notre Dame class that was some of the worst recruiting classes ever for Notre Dame (recruited by Willingham) and he took them from mediocre to pretty darn good. He has righted the ship in recruiting. Now he is playing with a lot of young players and they are playing like young players. Sheesh how many Freshman and Sophmores are starting? Compare that to other programs.

I know EXACTLY what Roman was/is hinting at with that photo and HE IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. The guy before him wasn't given that much rope. In fact, some say Ty's rope was made of wet cotton candy and that Weiss bought himself some time using Ty's recruits. I aint mad at Charlie, I would have done the same thing and partied all the way to the bank.

Great stats Chris. How can you argue with those?

I think its a little premature to talk about firing Weis. Grant that I am a diehard Notre Dame fan and have been through the thick and thin for 24 years, but before judging the man look at the past for a minute. Bob Davie was a mediocre coach who only had success due to Holtz's recruits. Tyrone Willingham came in and although I respect the man, his recruiter was terrible. Now before you jump the gun, yes he brought it great athletes like Quinn, Samardzija and Zbikowski, however the supporting cast was mediocre at times. He was hurt by Bob Davies mediocre recruiting as well. Now, Weis was able to produce his first two years, but due to Willingham's poor recruiting during his 3 year tenure, Weis was left with a bare cupboard by last year(3-9, worst season in school history). Being an ND fan and looking at the depth chart, other than a great tight end and defensive back, we had no depth and 3/4 of the offense/defense were first year starters, some freshmen. Now, Weis needs to step it up, finish this year out strong, win a bowl game and produce 9 wins at the least next year. To talk of firing him already is not taking into account the recruiter prior to his arrival. He is just getting his recruits in there and situated. I say give him 2 more years, if this all continues, then buy out the remainder of his contract. I am just being realistic. Looking back on the last 10 years, I can see the situation we are and guarantee that most of it has nothing to do with Charlie. Had he had the athletes in place that Urban Meyer had at Florida when he arrived, Weis may have won a National Title. But to fire a man bc he lost two close games in the past 3 weeks, one that went to overtime and the other that went down to the final play is ludicrous.

Here is what needs to be done.

1. Take all the SEC games off ESPN and ESPN2, Ensuring that N.D. is the only game on National TV again.

2. Raise the average Northern Indiana winter temperature by about 35-40 degrees.

3. Drop the Super High admission requirements

4. Relocate the Playboy Mansion to South Bend. to help offset the amount of ugly girls (not inlcuding Bubba's mom).

5. Bring back my GrandPa!

No. If the Irish are playing on Jan 1, it's been a very successful season. If they are playing in the next tier of bowls it's been a decent season. If they barely make a bowl it's a passable season.

Weis has maintained top recruiting classes & that's a major difference between him & his preds at ND. If the Irish win 1/3 they'll make a bowl. If they win 2/3 they'll get a better bowl, & if they win 2/3 & compete vs USC they'll get a Jan 1 bowl.

If by some miracle they are able to win 3/3 (beating USC) the college football world will be crying when ND gets a BCS invite.

If the Irish go 0/3 ND should be working under the scenes to get the Texas Tech coach to come to ND.

Notre Dame has been a program in decline for some time, for all sorts of reasons. Weis inherited plenty of problems, sure, but he also hasn't helped himself. Too much hype. I'm surprised he's recruited so well, since the results haven't been there. For being such an offensive "genius," it looks like a lot of sizzle but no steak. I'm a bit tired of hearing the excuse of the team being "so young" -- that's what separates the good coaches from the furniture: developing young talent.

I'm neither an ND fan nor hater, but it's sad to me to see the program in such shambles.

The "Weiss Watch" articles, which are in every paper in town, and are all the same, are written to sell papers. Anyone with any knowledge of ND football knows Weiss isn't going anywhere. Greg Couch's (who was the poor man's Mariotti, and now apperantly has inherited the mantle of worst writer in town) statement that "If I had to predict, Notre Dame will beat Navy and lowly Syracuse, and if not, then Weis is gone. But his last stand figures to come at USC. A blowout loss, and he's gone" is total nonesense. I will bet Greg Couch the amount of his measly paycheck that regardless of what happens in the next three games, Weiss remains. In fact, I'll bet him his paycheck on my end against his writing, "Tom Drysdale knows more than me about Notre Dame Football" on this blog on his end. He won't take that bet, becuase like Jay, he hides behind his by line.

His first recruits are going to be Juniors and Seniors next year. Lets see what they do. Wies was left with nothing when Brady Quinns class left. And as a ND fan, I think they have been playing pretty well for a team that was in shambles when it was handed to a new coach 4 seasons ago.

Beat SC!

And-

Bring back Woody Guthrie

Enough already with the excuses ND fans. Weis' recruiting the last 3 years has been in the top ten. Other schools with lesser talent are starting younger players and winning. If you can recruit, and WEis certainly can, then he has to be able to coach them and prepare them to play. Remember the hype that surrounded Clausen?? That was generated by the School, not the media. He set the standard with his comments when he was hired. ND is just another division 1 school like any other now, deal with it.

Weis is an utterly hapless head football coach. Time to fire him, NOW!

I heard some interesting comments on Mike and Mike this morning. The Mikes were making the case for ND because of the recruiting. Mike Golic a proud Alum, said that he would not want ND to increase recruiting by lowering the grade standards. Mike Greenberg a proud NU alum emphatically said he would not want NU to do that either. I will tell you this, I don't like those kind of comments because they always reflect poorly on the GOOD athletes, most of which happen to be fine academically. Those statements make it seem like talented players cannot be SMART or that other schools are inferior to ND and NU intellectually. That is a load of steaming crap. The challenge for IVY league schools etc. is to simply create an atmosphere of comfort or acceptance for such student/athletes - but they WON'T. Bottom line, sometimes your snooty image and high-priced education is just a big turnoff. I know I would not want to attend a school where my sport was really not important, and where I would be treated funny because I didn't have any money or the bloodline to fit in. ND and NU are fine institutions of higher learning, but they are other fine institutions offering the student/athlete MUCH MORE - personally. And I hope all of them kick that silver spoon right out of ND's mouth!

As long as ND refuses to offer scholarships to D students they will be no better than Northwestern. When you read Weis is having solid recruiting classes keep in mind they are only C students. They miss out on all of the D students that can be rated higher.

While you're thinking they should just relax their standards & take in the D's, keep in mind they are a private school & the faculty pukes at the suggestion. For ev scholarship you offer to a D student, you have to take away 2 scholarships to C students because of Title IX. Private schools like Stanford, Northwestern & ND won't do that.

So what can ND do? They have to maintain their rivalries with USC & MI, but they could stack the rest of the schedule with stronger academic schools.

The pool of strong academic schools ND should schedule: Air Force, BYU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Wake Forest, Boston College, VA Tech, GA Tech, Rutgers, Syracuse, Penn St, Purdue, Northwestern, Rice, Stanford, Vandy, LA Tech, Navy, & Army.

What all of these schools share w ND are smaller windows for success because of their tougher academic standards.

Let's put this in perspective -

the drumbeat for Weis starts because he is a pompous ass. Afterall, he came out of Bill Belichick's system. The difference? Belichick wins (and so writers put up with his pomposity), but Weis doesn't, so writers are exacting their pound of flesh.

Know what? It goes with the territory. Charlie needs to hitch up his pants and illustrate what his alleged "schematic superiorty" is. So far he hasn't. In fact, it looks like Clausen has regressed the past few games.

Another thing, Cassell may be no Brady in New England, but he definitely hasn't been all that bad. So it makes me wonder how much of ol' Charlie's claim to be the man who moulded Brady is all smoke n mirrors -- just like his claim of schematic superiorty.

Good perspective KTLTSS

lets be honest though...

Notre Dame hasnt had a gang banger with speed in a long time.

Culzie you show nuff can interpret. They need some Folks on the team. And ONLY true Chicagoans will interpret that one.

Hi guys,

I saw my name somewhere in this thread, alongside a reference to ugly girls.

Obnoxious and arrogant - accurate descriptions of Charlie Weis. Also accurate descriptions of Notre Dame. Yes, a Domer girl said that.

ND write and re-writes its own rules of engagement. This is one of the things that will never change about ND. As such, it's really impossible to know what they'll do with Charlie. I think Swarbrick's quotes in the S/T yesterday were fairly neutral about Weis, but let's face it, he alone won't make the decision to fire him. Jenkins may not even make the decision. I think the Board of Trustees will end up doing it.

Keith and Culzie, I like Golden Tate's speed and finesse. I just don't know if he qualifies as "folk."

I will feel bad for Weis's family if he gets canned. They've already established a home near South Bend for their daughter, who is disabled.

My final observation - Faust, Willingham and Davie were decent guys, but poor coaches. Holtz was a jerk, but was good enough to earn a bronze statue at ND. Weis seems to be neither a decent guy nor a good coach, at least not at the collegiate level. I wonder why ND can't find a coach who can be both.

Keith be gang banging up in this mug.

Throwing up all kind of signs.

People...Folk...enough already!

I am dying laughing!!! OK Culzie you qualify as fam. Now call Charlie and tell him to get some straight up geezies from the tray and he will be bowl eligible in 3 months tops.
