Robin Williams: Wrigley Stadium

| | Comments (9)

Went to a comedy show at Lakeshore Theater last night and Robin Williams showed up foro an impromptu set.

I've liked some of his movies like Good Will Hunting, Bird Cage and Insomnia, but I've never been crazy about his stand-up.

Still, he's a legend, and it was pretty cool to be in the second row for one of his sets.

He talked about the Cubs a couple of times, and the punchline revolved around "Wrigley Stadium" being in Boys Town. It's no big deal. I don't expect every person on the planet to know it's "Wrigley Field," but the first thing I thought of was Jeff Gordon making the same mistake while sining the 7th-inning stretch.

If Robin should happen to sing during the playoffs, I hope someone tells him where he's at.

I particularly liked his performances in "Dead Poets Society", "Caddilac Man", "Goodmorning Viet Nam",and "Mrs Doubtfire".

But if you look at the body of his work in films, (which is quite substantial) the vast majority of them were forgetable flops.

It surprises me that, considering his comedic timing and acting ability, Hollywood was not able to find better vehicles to showcase his talent.

He should fire his research staff. And really Robin, which came first Wrigley or boys town? So who is in the middle of who?

He probably asked whats hot in Chicago and someones said duh... the Cubs. And he said, "Anything funny about them?" duh...their stadium is in the middle of the gay section of town, its called boyztown. "OK cool I will use that"

Lazy prep. Ro but hes getting old.

GO CUBS

Mork from Dork!

YOu mean he wasnt making a joke that involved Wrigley "field" being called Wrigley "stadium" by Gordon? But instead was actually referring to Wrigley Field as Wrigley Stadium? Good Grief, the man is from here---grew up here, albeit on the North Shore raised by wealthy car dealer father, there is no way on this earth the man doesnt know its called Field and not Stadium...the guy was best coke buds with John Belushi another fellow Chicagoan and lover of the Cubs...he came here in the Spring for the Ellen show taping...

If he screwed this up it proves he is back on the coke and booze for good and/or senility is creeping into the lightning fast mind he apparently once possessed.

Disgraceful if true.

Okay, seriously, I've been trying to not be so nit-picky about grammar and spelling, but an editor ending a sentence in a preposition??? UGH!!!

I figured it out.

He said "Wrigley Stadium" on Saturday night at the Chicago Theater gig as well, but it didn't bother me or most of the other folks in the crowd, who, of course, had the prior disposition to see his standup.

Not that good grammar style and sense isn't good, regarding ending a sentence with a preposition, here's an old joke withno offense meant to Julie B :)

Texan at Harvard for the first day: "Excuse me, where's the library at?"

Harvard student: "Sir, at Harvard, we don't end our sentences with prepositions."

Texan: "Sorry. Where's the library at, jerk"

im the one who invited him over there and i got to do a quick set as well. honestly for all you guys, he is the nicest person alive and if he doesnt say something funny every 5 seconds he will explode. ive learned alot from him and next time he comes to the lakeshore ill give u guys the heads up.

Roman responds: Thanks for the note. I liked the guy in the Blackhawks jersey.
