Carlos Quentin has a fractured right wrist that will require surgery and likely will end his season.
Quentin said after the second pitch Monday against Cliff Lee, he held the bat with his left hand and hit it with his right, and 40 minutes later he felt something.
It's a huge blow to the Sox in a tight playoff race, but with the Twins tanking, there' no reason why the White Sox can't hang on.
Do the Sox start playing Brian Anderson? Griffey is staying in center, at least tonight, with Swisher moving to left.
What already was shaping up as a wild ride just got wilder.
I will be at the game tomorrow for my birthday and this is NOT the present I expected.....
Think he got hit in the arm by too many pitches?
Wish I agreed with you that the Twins are tanking....
I am sad.
Uh oh.
I can't believe this.
Not like it matters at this point, but let's hope it wasn't for "punching a locker." This isn't high school ball; this is the Major Leagues. Players need to start taking care of themselves more outside of field.
Thank God for the Twin's situation, otherwise we'd be fighting for the wildcard spot with some tough teams. This is not the time to start worrying about anything else but our bullpen.
Too good to be true.
The Ken Griffey trade is beginning to look a lot better...and Carlos HAS been hit too many times for the league not to notice. We still have enough horses to win the race.
He's the first batter to get hit in six straight games since 1920. One of those pitches did hit his arm, I think. I don't believe this "punching a locker" story.
Good teams always seem to have the backup when something like this happens. It appears it has worked with the pitching when Linebrink and Contreras went down. The bad part is that I believe the post season rosters had to have been submitted already, or do they take into account replacements for injuries? If so, is it too late to pick up a decent slugger?
No worries everything proceeding according to plan. Kenny and Ozzie should be able to ease this team into the playoffs and have them ready to go full out when they get there. Will see how the other guys on the roster do now that they have a chance to step up and help the team.
the pipe dream is over it was nice while it lasted.....the reason Quentin gets plunked so often is bc he crowds the plate, not bc pitchers are throwing at him.
Well, these things happen, but good thing we got Griffey. Why is the Suntimes reporting a RUMOR that he punched a locker and not getting the facts first???
It is over, period. Quentin is the heart and soul of that lineup. The only hope I can see is if Ozzie puts Ramirez third and dye fourth but that will never happen. Were done. Were cooked. It was fun while it lasted.
What exactly is a "self-inflicted mishap" anyway? The images running though my mind are ridiculous, like "altercation with blow-up doll" or "punched something."
Happy Birthday, Bubba's Mom!!! I'll be at the Cell tonight - I'll have a toast to you after I leave Beers of the World but before I get to the BBQ stand!
Now, the pitching will truly need to carry the team. Quentin was, in my mind, the MVP of the lineup throughout this season. Nobody had more clutch RBI's on the club. There is legitimate reason for worry as our starters are still "hope and prayer" starters. There's only one champion team that I can think of in my lifetime who did it with similar pitching. That was the "Big Red Machine" of the mid-seventies.
Here's the problem for the Sox however. While we might actually have a bit more power (even with Quentin out!) than they did, that team was virtually perfect in every other aspect of the game. I could go through the entire list of "no contests" but will spare all of you such length. Let's just start with Johnny Bench vs. AJ. It's almost enough said.
What a KNUCKLEhead!
Seasons over... The MVP will go to that little over-rated Red Sox player. I hate the Red Sox they are like the Cubs of the North East
Julie, I will be passing Beers of the World around 5:45 to get to my seat. Thanks for the wish. I'm almost ready for AARP, though not old enough to remember the last time the Cubbies won the World Series.
Gig I don't know how you can fairly compare Johnny Bench with any modern-day catcher. Bench is absolutely one of the greats - both as a field general and as a hitter. But pitching has changed so much - much more is demanded of them today, and A.J., for all his antics, is a great manager of the Sox pitching staff. He is unbelievably smart. I'll take his relatively predictable bat, because the other stuff he has is invaluable to the team.
Dear "Bubba's Mom,"
Thanks for your post. My point was that it took a nearly perfect team (apart from starting pitching) like the "Machine" in order to compensate for a rather so-so starting staff. I purposely started with Bench not to pick on AJ, but to illustrate my point in a very compact manner. Yes, I agree that AJ is still an overall fine catcher for the reasons you gave. I'd take him over more than half of the others today. Still, he can't throw out baserunners to save his life. His high intelligence is also rarely seen when he's on the basepaths. He seems to leave his head at home plate! Even the latest Doug Eddings dupe was lost between his boneheaded choice to run to third with a ball grounded in front of him--a little league mistake!
Regarding another point you made about how much is expected of pitchers now compared to then? I'm not quite sure what you're referring to. It certainly can't be the fact that hardly any of today's starters will throw more than around 100-110 pitches! Even a guy like Nolan Ryan could throw far more pitches at 100 mph as an every 4TH-day starter! How are we expecting more from pitchers today? Granted, I'd estimate that the average speed of today's fastball is about 3 mph higher than the mid-seventies, but guys like Ryan throw a wrench into that argument.
The WSox have plenty of bench players to fill in for Quentin in LF. Hitting wise, Thome, Kong, & Uribe have heated up & Dye, AJ, & Cabrera have remained consistent. Even Swisher seems to have improved some. So the need for Quentin is not as great now. Let's not forget Griffey Jr's on the team.
My biggest concern remains Crede. I'm happy that Uribe is in a hot streak but I feel much more confident with Crede as a regular in the lineup in Sept.
This team has more than enough hitting. Whether they make and break in the playoffs will depend on the pitching. I think getting Linebrink back is a great lift for the staff. With the expanded rosters they have plenty of arms to consume innings. The key to winning the division is to increase the lead so that a single win in MN will clinch it. With MN facing another formidable road trip before the WSox I'm confident that scenario will play out.
Go Sox!
Hopefully his broken wrist will be healed by the time the playoffs begin.
There is no doubt we have Quentin to thank for the WSox being in 1st place. That being said, the show must go on.
The team has a whole has been swinging the bats well in the last month. So I don't worry about them scoring runs.
This race will come down to pitching & most importantly bullpens. The WSox seem to have found a flow again with the return of Linebrink.
Go Sox!
HAPPY B DAY B's MOMMA!!!
Just wondering:
Whatever happened to Hit Man?
I dearly miss his scatological bloviating.
Happy B. Day Bubba's Mom! Sox are going to survive the Twins, but reaching the series is going to be tough without our slugger. But we still have a change. Tough break - literally.
Villano, I've thought about Hitman a few times too - what happened? He hasn't been around all summer. Hope he's okay........ (ellipses in tribute)
Weird...I was thinking about HITMAN too.
???
ok..no joke...
i went back and looked, and it appears that Hitman's last post was around July 11th-12th
Here is one of the last ones I could find...
========= From Hitman=======
Well..I'm a Region Rat, too..DaGrandfather put 42 years in at US Steel...that ought to cover the collar color...and I don't think I ever heard him say White Sox..
I have no reason to watch the american league since Thurman died...Comisky was gross..but I did love the scoreboard and the shower...
I can say semicolon...if the Cell is anything like Chase Field in AZ semicolon...Please don't use it in the same sentence as Wrigley semicolon...kinda like sterile and detached has nothing to do with friendly confines dotdotdot
OR..
I remember hearing Wrigley/Cubs and a billion dollars in the same sentence....Don't think Cell/Sox and a billion dollars would ever be a discussion...
For Me..baseball should be more of an intimate venue... it should be played by one set of rules...and that's done at Wrigley
Everything Sox will always be second to anything Cubs..but I think it's mostly due to the National League being a better brand of baseball...
and one quick note...Ken Griffey Jr; Only guy from the roid era who should be recognized as great
Answer...Wrigley
