Stop booing Rex - for now

| | Comments (47)

Why were people booing Rex Grossman on Friday night? It was Family Night for crissakes!

Look, if he screws up - I mean when he screws up - during a game, be it preseason or regular-season, let him have it. But for now, take it easy. It's not helping anything.

I've been as big a critic of Rex as anyone, but I'm starting to look at him as a sympathetic figure. Give him a break.

The truth is, he hasn't been a bad guy. A bad quarterback? Yes, at times. Maybe he's insinuated that some bad throws were the fault of his receivers, but give the guy a break - for now.

It's not helping.

I would be against booing any Bear player.Certainly at times bonehead plays are upsetting enough for one to feel like booing or doing something even more drastic, but consider how you felt when you did something stupid. I know the bonehead plays I made were known by me better than anyone else. I strongly believe that most dedicated athletes are their own worst critics and do not need boos to make them aware of their poor performances. If they are arrogant and egocentric, believing they can do no wrong, their teammates will soon bring about a severe attitude adjustment much more effectively than booing fans will.

Tell me about it, Roman. I couldn't agree with you more, but when it comes to football, for whatever reason, the quarterback is the first to get booed on regardless of all the factors behind the poor play of the entire offense. With Rex, I just don't get it at all from fans. The guy gets picked on, made fun of and booed constantly as if he's the worst Bears QB ever and he's not. This year is no exception. Other past Bears QB like Kordell Stewart, Rick Mirer, Steve Stenstrom, etc. were plain horrible, but they were never booed like this from Rex. Like I said before in other posts, it doesn't matter how strong of a preseason Rex has, he will continue to get booed on every tiny mistake and fans will continue to say that the Bears' QB competition is rigged in Rex's favor. I've stopped trying to reason about Rex and the QB position with anyone, really. The QB talk brings out the worst in knucklehead sports fans.

Two key reasons why Bears fans have every right to boo Rex.

1 - It's a boo of frustration at dumb &ss bear mgmt at the fact that Rex is the starting quarterback despite the fact pretty much everyone but the Bears management knows his ceiling and understands that the Bears have zero chance of winning a superbowl with him as the QB.
2- He shouldn't be the Bears starting QB because he's not good enough.

I don't understand your point as to why Bears fans shouldn't boo. Is it because he's a nice guy? Don't take offense, but who cares? This is pro football, he's getting paid a lot of money to produce and he isn't.

In over 30 years of watching NFL football, I've never seen a QB treated as harshly as Rex by the media and fans. Bears fans often remind my of Philadelphia fans who liked to boo Mike Schmidt, among others.

The preseason mags show how unreasonable people can be. Eli Manning is now worshipped by the media/preseason mags because a star Patriot DB can't catch in the fourth quarter and a miraculous catch is made by another bad Eli throw on the same drive. The mag rates the Giants QBs as a B+ and the Bears QBs as a D+, even though the stats over the last few years couldn't be more similar. It pays to be lucky and have the name of Manning I guess.

This lemming mentality among the media and fans is becoming sad to watch. If I'm a GM in the NFL, I take the Bears' Orton and Rex over many QB combos on various team. They aren't great yet, but they're both young and good enough IMO. They have more unproven talent at receiver and running back.

You got to be kidding me??? These guys make millions of dollars and we're supposed to pay good money to watch garbage??? I dont know about you but when I have to pay $6.50 for a beer I'm thinking I'm entitled to boo if I so desire.

Was Angelo introduced at family night? If so, then he should have received the loudest boos. Then Turner. Then Lovie.

Yeah, it's sad to hear about Rex getting booed, but not surprising. Cubs fans were pretty hard on their players last year and will turn on them again should they falter down the stretch.

If Angelo wasn't introduced, then half of the boos toward Rex were really directed at Management. Fans are tired of the Rex experiment. They are tired of Lovie's inability to name a starter. They are tired of Turner's play calling. So, they take it out on the focal point - Rex.

No doubt there were fans booing Aaron Rodgers up at Packers family night.

There probably were fans booing Lou Gehrig during his "Luckiest guy in the world" speech.

Pay the price for the ticket, enjoy the show (booing is included in that price).

Family night? If you think that might stop boorish behavior, you must also slow down and improve your driving every time you see one of those "Baby on Board" caution signs.

Booing doesn't help no matter when you do it, but booing Rex at a training camp scrimmage is laughable. Way to boost the guy's confidence! I've been to countless sporting events in my life, and I still cannot for the life of me figure out why fans boo their own players. I doubt Lovie's going to be swayed in one way or another in deciding our starter because of the booing in the stands. I feel like we're turning into a bunch of unruly New Yorkers here in our lovely city. Stay classy Chicago!!!

Frustration has been noted, as were other past Bear Q.B.s who were just plain awful, but the truth of the matter here is Rex has had plenty of time to prove and improve, but has done neither.

You will always have knucklehead boo-birds, and all that did was cause a chain reaction to others to chirp along, but the key issue here is the managements decision to not bring in another arm. How, or better yet, why is that possible? Does the staff feel comfortable enough with Kyle and Rex, 'cause I sure in the heck don't? I know what I feel has no bearing on the coaches decisions, but how can you continue to build on the same plot that crumbles below you every time?

I'm sorry, but unless this staff feels Orton can do an admirable job of keeping us in the ballgame, I'm going to lose a lot of respect for Lovies' decision to keep running in the mud. Blinders have no part in tradition and what's right for your club. Forget the fans, they're coming anyway, but damn Lovie, where's the pride?

Not coming from Grossmans' arm, I can tell you that.

Oh well, I'll rest on the defense; as will everyone else!

I too have been about as frustrated as anyone when Rex has done the most boneheaded acts such as fumbled snaps. On the other hand, I still count myself among the few who believe who deserves one more season--no more!

Why another chance? There are two main reasons:

1. He throws a great deep ball. True, it's about all he has done consistently well. However, it seems to me that that particular talent is about as special to have as there is for a QB. I liken this to golf in which experts say that if guy can hit his long irons, he can do just about anything else. It represents a complete foundation in his skills. If Rex can throw long well, then I believe he can do the rest well. Granted, beyond that, you need to have a mental makeup which segues into my next reason.

2. I don't believe Rex has been given a proper offensive line, especially one for an immobile QB--and relatively short one--such as him. They have particulary stunk in pass protection. I think he still lies awake at night watching the likes of Fred Miller acting like a turnstile.

While I don't condone his ridiculous dropped snaps which represent a mental problem, I can understand why he's been that way. With a guy in that state of mind, I suppose our chronic boos don't help either. It's unfortunate that Chris Williams can't get healthy portending another frustrating O-line season, perhaps an issue anyway just because he's a rookie, but we can't afford to give Rex more than one more season however unlucky it may be for him. (I might add that we haven't exactly been blessed with outstanding receivers either!)

I would say that we need to try as best we can to give him a break in light of past circumstances, at least for a little while. If I'm at home throwing sneakers at my big screen, he won't know this fan's anger and frustration. Nevertheless, I still believe in Rex Grossman and root for his success. I think he has enough talent to win.

You boo someone for messing up in a game, well that is EXACTLY why they were booing him. They certainly weren't doing it because it was family night! He is a Turnover-Saurous-Rex and they are tired of seeing his mug! HE can stop the booing by playing and management can stop it by cutting his behind! And with that being said (huge inhale) - haaaaaaaaaaaah "BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!"

The Bears are going into the season with Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton. The fans should be booing Jerry Angelo.

You can say crissakes? That's pretty edgy.

Fans do pay their money and are entitled to boo but shouldn't they wait to have something to boo? Whatever he has done is in the past. Having Benson as his feature back should warrant a do-over in regard to last year. Angelo is the main culprit for getting us what we have and getting us what we've had. You guys want to complain about everything. We don't sign a 36 year old safety because a 30 year older didn't work out last year and fans says that's wrong. We won't give up a 1st round pick for a guy who isn't even wanted in the town where he has played for 16 years and we're wrong. Last year we got done in by age and fans want a revival of players who have been playing since most of our current players were in kindergarten. Forget that they are big names what on earth will they do now with another year under their belt? You guys want to mortgage our future on a QB that care more about personal glory and can quit after not getting us to a Super bowl by the end of the year. Forget again that he failed to get a team with a better offense than we have now and an offense that he was familiar with to the big game and yet he's worth all the aggravation that fans are putting their own players through right now. Rex got this team to the Super bowl with an assortment of free agents and drafted players on offense. There is no reason to believe that with another assortment he can't be better than last year. Getting Ced out of here will only help. Angelo got it right before and if it's wrong he'll get it right again. What QB was available this off season who we passed over that was going to help us? Whoever was available to us is still available to others who are also passing them up? Stop hating on your team so much.

Sorry Roman, but I'm all in favor of booing Grossman as soon as he gets out of bed ... breakfast at the latest.

I've seen enough of him, and I don't want to boost his morale or give him any encouragement whatsoever.

Unless we're talking about encouraging him to leave town.

Bears Fan 4 Life:

"Bears management knows his ceiling [Superbowl Starter] and understands that the Bears have zero chance of winning a superbowl with him as the QB."

Maybe we should get Tom Brady. He's guaranteed to win us a Supberbowl. Right?

"He shouldn't be the Bears starting QB because he's not good enough."

Compared to who, Kyle Orton?

Gig sez: "I liken this to golf in which experts say that if guy can hit his long irons, he can do just about anything else."

I disagree.

Hitting the long irons requires brute strength, size, and speed.

Crushing a 280 yard drive and keeping it on the fairway does require a certain amount of skill, (and luck) but these talents don't necessarily transfer to the short game.

You can't be a scratch golfer by virtue of your long game alone, and without the steady nerves, excellent eyesight, and deft touch required on the putting green, you can drive the ball a mile and still not break 100.

It's simple. Booing -ANYONE- at a PRACTICE makes us Bear fans seem like we just don't understand the game. Really? At a practice? C'mon, folks - let's have a little class and composure...

agreed.
If you like or hate ANY Bears player you shouldn't boo him because like it or not he's part of the team.
If your a real fan you would show support.
Like many have said what is booing going to do for you?

While Rex ain't the best QB in the league, he's still the most successful QB this franchise has had in nearly 25 years. But the lemmings just want to make him the whipping boy for the front office's poor decisions. Fact is, a combination of Manning, Favre and Brady would have looked similarly lousy behind that sieve of an offensive line last year.

That said, I have no problem with fans booing poor performance during a game. You can't charge $250 per ticket and expect people to golf-clap failure.

But booing during introductions to a "Family Night" practice, before one down has even been played in exhibition season? Low-class. And ignorant.

Exhibit A, from upthread:

"too have been about as frustrated as anyone when Rex has done the most boneheaded acts such as fumbled snaps..."

Yeah, that wouldn't have *anything* to do with our alleged all-pro center, Kreutz, who's had the EXACT SAME issue with every other Bears QB during his tenure (remember Jim Miller fumbling some key snaps back in '01?)

All aboard!!! Welcome to Fantasy Island, Jdigg and Sahrish. Well, it's not exactly a fantasy, more like a nightmare, but we love our Bandwagon!

P.S. I like when Roman uses phrases like "crissakes." Makes me feel young.

Grossman deserves every BOO he gets because for years the Bears have given him every opportunity regardless of what he did on the field and in the real world he should be given no more chances.

Hey Will....you a cheesehead?

Entitled to boo....certainly, if it's the end of a 2-14 season and your team has no chance to go anywhere and it's been graced by incompetency all season. Practices? Give me a @%$# break! Ever played any sports that didn't involve a joystick? Confidence is just as important as ability. This is OUR team, dude! Rex has had a few bad games, granted, but compared to the other quarterbacks we've had in the 30 years from Avelini to Huchinson, he's certainly one of the more gifted ones. This guy's probably going to get some playing time this year--wouldn't you rather he be confident rather than doubting himself?

If I hear you booing Rex (or any other Bear) at any of the preseason games, I'll be the first person to empty a soda on your hear (one of the BIG ones!).

Go Bears!

True Chicago Bears Fans will always support their team, good or bad. Booing is low class and ignorant. Rex did a great job for most of his games. True he had problems, but so did the receivers who seemed incapable of getting separation, especially Muhsin. And the offensive line was less than average. Yes, you ignorant, low class jerks can boo all you like, all you do is bring disgrace to yourself and your team. Why not drink your beers at home, in front of the TV, at least then you won't look stupid to other true fans.

I can not believe some of the comments and boneheaded things that are being said here...The posts that regard to booing their own players at a practice have the lowest sports IQ in history.

Also if so called fans even payed the slightest attention Rex Grossman was with the second team offense going againest the 1st team defense at some points.

This city claims to be "A great sports town" WOW so far from the truth after this incident, we have never had a good QB because of behavior like this, nobody likes any of the Qb's we have had.

Somebody mentioned the ticket price to family night and having to pay for the ticket...it was $7 , so take that money and put it in the bank if you going to boo.

This reminds me of baseball in chicago. I love good baseball, and the cubs and white sox are playing extremly well this year but...If you want to go to an atmosphere where you drink and have a good time, you go to wrigley. If you want to go to a game and talk about when to move the runner over you head to the south side. Where the baseball IQ is twice of what it is in wrigley any day.

You want a lower IQ for a football you go family night and even regular season games, you want to talk good football you stay at home on your couch so you dont have to listen to most of the fans chanting something the will A. Never Happen B.Because they dont know the sport.

We asked for an open competition, and let the best QB win.

P.S. The people booing most likely had on #32 cedric benson jersey on and were wondering why he was playing defense....FYI his name is Trey Brown and he is a CB.

I said it all last year and I'll say it again. We need a better O-Line. That's where it all starts. Drafting Williams will help but it's not going to make that much of a difference from last year. Remember this comment at the end of the season. If anything we're a year older. Which in my opinion isn't a good thing when you have 250 lb twenty year old d-linemen all amped up on Monster and Ripped Fuel. I don't care if we have the greatest QB in the world, he's not going to be able to be successful if he doesn't have a good O-Line. Hell, you couldn't pay me $20M to stand behind that O-line from last year. Actually, yes you could but thats for another opinion. Getting back to my point if there even is one anymore. I read "Orton completed all his passes during the 7 on 7 drills". He did? Wow! He must be the next Bradshaw! Orrrr maybe it's because it was a 7 on 7 drill and not with his pathetic O-line in there blocking our tenacious D-line. I'm sorry but be careful what we wish for here. I believe even with Orton in at QB we are still going to suck because we don't have a good O-Line which means...Orton can't pass the ball because he doesn't have enough time, Forte or Jones can't run the ball because they're getting hit in the backfield, then we have to punt, which inturn leads to the defense being on the field more, which means more defensive injuries, which in turn leads to the other team putting up points on us and us palying from behind. Sound familiar? It happened all last year. And I'm the dumb one for staying up till 3 am here in Japan to watch the Bears when i already know whats going to happen durring the game. But whatever I was born and raised a Bears fan and I'll always be a Bears fan. At least we have Hester! Go Bears (i hope)!

Here we go again. Some new loser trying to start something. If that dunce had read my entry he would see that I said that people should wait to have something to boo about. I'm backing my team until I have reason not to. And regardless of what has happened over the last 30 years I've backed them until the last whistle of the last game. Quick question; what does a person do after you pour a drink on their head? That's why so many idiots fight at the games. Some other idiot feel it's necessary to inflict some measure of punishment on someone. I know if I wrote what I'd do under the circumstances it wouldn't get printed so please use your imagination. Why does football season always bring out the tough guys behind the key boards? I'm tired of people mentioning that we should get Favre so I refuse to use his name anymore. If you've mistaken what I've said then for you I will type slower next time.

Why boo rex? because angelo wasnt available. Only reason rex is still with team is angelo trying to keep his job. Angelo should go, and take no offense lovie with him. So far in 5 years they havnt found a qb or a reliable safety. If mike brown gets hurt again, this team will be in deep trouble, and it won't matter if orton or rex is the qb. Foisting Rex off on this team and city again isn't just hubris, isn't just stubborness, isn't just incompetence, this is sheer fraud. The booing just shows the fans aren't as gullible as the Mcaskeys.

Rex does NOT deserve an NFL uniform. Plain and simple.

Yall are CRAZY! Anytime I hear his name it is going to be followed by the words "BOO"! And I will boo Cedrik Benson and Bob Avelini if I hear their names introduced also! Don't try and equate - booing Rex with booing the entire team. Don't even try it! Pah-leaze! And yes, last year does count! That is why Harold Baines has a statue! Last year is why Eli will be CHEERED! Now would you say its wrong to cheer someone that hasn't done anything this year??? NO you wouldn't! No default cheers! We are smart enough to know when to cheer and boo thank you VERY MUCH! And booing a turnover machine who cant take a snap from an all pro center in the superbowl is my American right! Show me the rule that says you can't boo someone based on what they have done in the past! Save it! The same people who cheer the Bears with all their heart have invested their time and money into that team (more than REX), and have earned a right to VOICE displeasure with a player. Booing didnt stop Eli from stepping up did it? He had a TON of pressure on him, but still manned up! HE HAS TURNED HIS BOOS TO CHEERS WITH HIS PLAY!!!

I will boo until i am booed out and dare someone to throw a beer on me! Would be the worst decision of his/her life! Now that is something to protest right there. Censureship! I guess we are going to say when its ok to cheer next!

How can you be surprised that he is boo'd in a country where we BOO our troops for protecting our safety and we BOO our President because we get our information from the Daily Show instead of real news outlets, and we Boo real hero's like the Cops and Firemen...and we cheer THUGS and we Cheer for violence and we cheer for Terrorists...

gimme a break...that you are surprised that people boo...

People are just confused and people just love to hate...its that simple.

B

"How can you be surprised that he is boo'd in a country where we BOO our troops for protecting our safety and we BOO our President because we get our information from the Daily Show instead of real news outlets, and we Boo real hero's like the Cops and Firemen...and we cheer THUGS and we Cheer for violence and we cheer for Terrorists..."

Bculz:

Thank you for over generalizing/twisting the SPORTS issue and even making the ridiculous connection that Rex is somehow a "hero".

Made for a good laugh.

Culzie we do have some misplaced or misinformed boos, but Rex (and the president) have earned theirs based on performance. This guy has a canon for an arm and he is still "Rexing" things up. (my own little word for describing life's mishaps, mistakes and foibles) I could have easily used the word "Bushing".

Now the troops and the cops and Firemen are misplaced. Especially when you lump them together. But that cop who beat the brakes off of that female bartender should be booed everytime somebody announces his name also!

Make whatever connections you want, I just know that people are so quick to build up and then tear down.

It makes us feel closer to those we once idolized.

You all voted for war, you have no real reason to not like Bush other than thats what you have been spoon fed by liberal media elite, who have been proving wrong 1000 x's over and are now the people are speaking and they are tired of being fed lies from Anti-American chumps...who also probably boo Rex..

no connection, other than the "desire to BOO your own"

its weird to me.

B

Horse walks into a bar. Bartender says, "Hey buddy, why the long face?"

:)

No Poodle or 2 foot Salami?

Julie B:

So what did the horse say?

Horse says, "Rex is our quarterback."

Horse says, "Wife's a night'mare'.

I am dying laughing because you have ALL the right words:

Rex, Quarterback, night-mare, bartender, JOKE!

Horse sez: "I'm not sure, but that steaming pile of manure behind me looks an awful lot like Rex."

I heard the Packers wanted Griese from Tampa Bay and that TB didnt want to do the deal.

What a joke...

Maybe we can get Griese back for all your cry babys....who called him the savior!!!

remember that?? What happened with that???

what a joke you anti-rex fans are!!!

All Rex has done is busted his ass to win for us, and you cant get over your own self righteous hatred for him.

I have said all along, until they bring in someone BETTER...we should support our guy.

Julie...you are coming dangerously close to experiencing the Bandwagon Ejector Seat that I had secretly installed over the summer.

You better get it together!!

There are some ignorant fans out there, like the ones that boo on Family Night. Boo him during the game when HE messes up, not when other people fail. Remember those 40 dropped passes last year, 3rd most in the NFL? Don't boo Grossman for that. Boo him when he underthrows receivers or throws into poor coverage.

Remember those ignorant fans? Like the Cubs fans that ganged up on a Sox fan and the Sox fan lost his eye. Or the other Cubs fan who punched his sister when she tried to break up a fight with a Brewer fan. I'm a Cubs fan and I'm appalled. I'm appalled by all the Grossman haters who have tunnel vision.

I'm going to be labeled a "Rex Lover" after this post, but I all I want is for the Bears to win. If Rex succeeds, then awesome. If he fails, then he is gone after this season and we'll start over yet again. I understand it is frustrating, but booing a person who has been nothing but professional is obsurd.

Whatever, BC. You're just jealous of my realism and levelheadedness, not to mention my ability to use 15-letter words with ease. I will support whomever Lovie tells me to support. You know this bandwagon wouldn't be the same without me. Who else would compare the facial hair deficiencies of both quarterbacks to their passer ratings?

I think it would be neat if:

When Rex finally enters the game, everyone watching on television opened a window or stepped out the door, and let out a blood curdling, "BOOOOOoooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Fans boo'ed the mess out of him! And how can you really blame them? Orton has no arm, but he moves the chains and eats the clock. Give me orton.

Lovie should say:

"We get off the bus booing Rex"

It was Family Night for crissakes!

Roman, the word crissakes only displays the same frustration Chicago SPORTS FANS have with our SPORTS TEAMS!

Chicago is a major city with a voluminous arrays of suburbs and nearby outer-towners to watch our teams play. In other words none of our teams can cry broke, even though they do it! I believe what you take as a BOO against Grossman is in actuality, if I can speak for the posters who felt Grossman should be booed is a LOUD BOO against Chicago Bears Management.

Aslo, this mean the other sports teams as well. Understand, we don't have sports team winners on a regular basis to keep us encourage. Can I do any athlete's job? No! I don't if they oould do mine either and when I screw up I get terminated!

When we get winners on a regular basis which go to the Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Finals, NFL Finals or Soccer Finals and win some times but lose others WE HAVE HOPE AND FAITH IN THE PLAYERS AND THE TEAM for the NEXT FEW YEARS TO CARRY US THROUGH when winning only just a Divisional Title.

As Al Davis has stated, "JUST WIN BABY!"

Roman, we are not winners man!

And we have two teams in first place or fighting to remain in first place. I am a White Sox Fan, I can live off of what the White Sox's 2005 World Series Championship presently, but I want another damn championship! And this year! If the Cubs win it, I can at least cringe ( or relish ) in the fact Cub Fans will harp about it and we have some good natured debates on their luck and my team demise in a divisional playoff, and hopefully the World Series maybe against the Cubbies!

The Chicago Bears need to have better quarterbacks then they do. I BELIEVE PEOPLE ARE MORE FRUSTRATED WITH MANAGEMENT AND GROSSMAN HAPPENS TO BE A BY-PRODUCT TO WHICH THE ANGER IS RELEASED UPON! This is why the quarterback gets paid the big bucks - regardless if the team fails or succeed.

Give us winning teams and we will stop bytching. Look how we still clinging onto the 1985 BEARS CHAMPIONSHIP! For CRISSAKES - I WAS IN DIAPERS ALMOST BACK in 1985!...*LOL*

It was such a poor showing at the 2007 Super Bowl that most of us don't even count it as being in one. And then come back and play like wussies for the 2007-2008 season. Come on Roman, what do you expect?
