Woe is Wie - Full Court Press

Woe is Wie

Michelle Wie walked away in tears today after walking away before signing her scorecard yesterday. But was her disqualification a fair punishment?

BY KYLE KOSTER

I've had the conversation with a few people before about how crazy it is that professional golfers have to go into that little tent after their round wielding those little miniature pencils and tally up their score.

Today's Michelle Wie situation just reaffirms what I've always felt to be a wildly unbalanced scale of crime and punishment.

If the round is on national television and millions of people are consistently being updated on the player's score, why is it necessary that the player go through the formality of signing their name next to their round total? I realize there is tradition involved, but when there is a giant leaderboard looming over their shoulders at all times, why continue a practice that could very possibly rob someone of a victory and a wheel barrel-full of money?

Anyone out there excited about the rigidly unflinching rules of golf being followed to the letter of the law? Anyone think this is an unfair punishment for a very small crime? Anyone able to muster any LPGA-related passion?

Yes. It is a much better finish then she could have asked for. Another excuse for failure...keep 'em coming.

Stuck, will you be using the excuse of "failed to sign scorecard" at the end of the baseball season? The Cubs are running out of Billy Goats and Bartmans.

Perhaps if in her previous interactions with the LPGA's established players Wie had shown herself to be a little more respectful, then maybe her fellow golfers would be more inclined to forgive a minor oversight. However, I think that Wie's frankly immature and self-serving approach to the game (from her rude behavior on the course directed at other golfers to her withdrawals from competitions when it appeared she might not make the cut) has finally shown its consequences.

Kyle responds: While I agree that she's been less than the consummate team player, I don't think this particular event was a byproduct of any type of "bad girl" attitude. When I see all the types of struggles young athletes and celebrities have and all the scrutiny placed on them, I am extremely grateful that I am not exceptionally talented at anything.

I WONDER IF THE LPGA OFFICIALS LET HER PLAY ANOTHER ROUND BECAUSE IT WAS SELF SERVING. LET'S FACE IT - WHO CARES ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT NOW THAT THERE IS NO MICHELLE. WOULD THE TV GUYS HAVE CANCELLED THEIR COVERAGE WITHOUT MICHELLE??

more like 'failing to fill scoreboard' with anything other than goose eggs. I see Kosuke is doing his twirling in the 7 hole now......"Boy, I hope we don't lose that last engine or we will be up in the sky all day".

In the first place as much as I've enjoyed playing golf over the years I rank watching it on TV right above watching bowling on TV and just below watching paint dry, watching grass grow and sitting on the porch on a Saturday night counting cars with one headlight out. Having said that, I would understand Michele being upset had this been some type of a new rule (when was the last rule change in golf?) that she had over-looked but she's been playing professionally how long now? I'll admit that with the media coverage of tournaments it seems to be a silly rule but it's the rule none-the-less. Back when that rule was initiated the intention was that each player keep the score of the player and at the end of the round they would check the score card and sign it to attest to it's accuracy. Today with the coverage of tournaments it's more of a traditional formality than anything else and one I doubt Michele will forget to do again.

Now what's with the typing in the characters in the box deal? Is it to prevent hijacking the blog and driving it into the Tribune Building? The new format at least leaves no more confusion as to who posted what but come on.

I AM ROOTING FOR A SHARK ATTACK TODAY!!

The requirement to sign a scorecard after a tournament has been around forever. My son plays and they grill that into their head from their 1st tournament. It's not that big of a deal people.

I have no use for Wie and her parental entourage. They have a definite Superiority Complex. Having said that, it seems the LPGA worked behind the scenes here. Why didn't they DQ her immediately after the round? Maybe this has been covered already but had she won, she would no longer need sponsors' exemptions to get into tournaments.

The LPGA has LOTs of issues and Wie is just 1 of them...they will go under right after the WNBA
