Has that immense weight on your shoulders lightened now that the Urlacher negotiations have come to an end?
KYLE says:
The Bears are hoping a happier Brian Urlacher translates to a happier 2008 campaign. And we all know that the root of all happiness is money.
How does this news affect your view of the upcoming Bears season? To me, it's just one less distraction looming, but we all know #54 isn't going to solve the quarterback situation. As far as on-field play goes, the bigger issue is whether or not Urlacher can return to form or if -- as many say -- his best years are behind him.
What's Angelo going to say to the McCaskey's when Brian winds up on the IR three games into the season?
"Nice way to spend $6 million. Way to go, Jerry!" ???
Kyle responds: I'm very confused by that, Villano. More importantly, what would he say to Joe Fan?
Thank god the guy with a "minor" neck condition and an arthritic back was finally taken care of.
Never mind it wasn't the Bears fault that he can't use birth control. And did the Bears hold a gun to his head to sign the supposed "bad" contract in the first place?
He "outplayed" the terms of the current contract? Tough. That's the tradeoff with a long-term deal.
They shoulda not gave him the bump...he should still be earning the same pay. Can't wait for training camp.
Compared to other MLB in the NFL RIGHT NOW, he's the best and also the best fit for this defensive scheme.
He's earned the money, Forget Jay article, he has earned the right to be a Bear and get paid for it.
I don't even care what happens off the field as long as he plays, what no one remembers that we went to the SB? I feel he played injured last year, nuff said!
Gitchoe MONEY Urlacher! Bears were smart. He is arguably the best player on the team, and he deserves to be paid within fair market value. I am for players getting their rewards - especially when they perform. Part of the reason he is hurt is because of the WAY that the man has played the game. With fierce passion.
That said, I am also in favor of taking away a person's salary due to gross underachievement! Rex-Ced-rine!
Kyle responds: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Do not let my bosses catch wind of your salary reclamation theory.
You know what, Urlacher is one of the very few guys on the team that actually earns his keep. And I think it was smart to placate him and keep him here. The revised contract was not outrageous by any means. I want 54 happy and ready to go. Plus, he's got some child support to catch up on. I just hope there's a clause that says "Must stay away from Kankakee County skanks, skanks in Chicago, skanks no matter their zip code."
Can we get some decoder glasses to along with this new format???
I agree in that it was a waste of money! Here the Bears have no solid Running Back,Wide Receiver and O-Line but yet crybaby Urlacher wants to get paid. I wonder if Lance Briggs will get treated the same way another year from now.
I used to be a big Urlacher fan but not anymore. The Bears will really be laughing when he is hurt by mid year and yet owed all that money.
Urlacher is an animal and future HOFer. I dont care about what Jay is talking about.
Yes, he deserves the money. Every last penny.
I'm gld the contract was signed. Let's hope he has a great year.
Immense weight might have described it 5 years ago.
Nice to have him signed up.
Now relieve the Atlas like burden and get a QB.
Speaking of Bosses and Salary's
Isnt it Tuesday? Where the H*ck is Roman?
Kazamel? Vegas? Bocca? Rancho Sante Fe?
Is there a MMA grudge match I havent seen a post about?
and...who are all these new guys on the payroll lately? I thought newspaper readership was way down across the country....i guess the SunTimes is like the Scottsdale of the real estate market...recession proof!
Kyle responds: Payroll? I'm doing this in exchange for a ham sandwich and the possibility of some free Chicago Sky merchandise. Maybe an Urlacher-like negotiation is in order.
speaking of babys Momma's i just got this fwded to me today....very funny...

Urlacher still acts like he's the best player on the team (it's Harris). Angelo should've given that $6 million to Hester.
No, he didn't deserve a new deal and more money. This shows the Bears can be pushed around by an unhappy player. Tillman and Vasher likely have "outplayed" their contracts based on the money CBs have gotten lately. How about Briggs in two years? Why shouldn't others redo deals with 4 years remaining?
This is a bad precedent they have set and will rue this Urlacher deal.
Mariotti is always complaining that team owners in Chicago don't spend enough money on their players. Here is situation where they do reward one of their all-time great players and a future hall of famer. Which is it Jay you are the biggest hypocrite alive. You're probably just jealous. Why don't you just stay at ESPN or go back to Detroit.
Kyle responds: OK, this misinformation has got to end. Here's an excerpt of Jay's bio from our Web site:
"As for the bizarre myth that he's from Detroit, he's not. He grew up in Pittsburgh, not far from the hometown of Mike Ditka, Da Coach.
This is Mr. Know It All Kyle
It doesn't really matter where Mariotti came from Pittsburg or Detroit. He just needs to take his act and column back to where ever he came from he is not wanted here by anyone. He simply a backstabber, 90% of his stories are just negative garbage. And he does more flip-flops than an Olympic gymnastics champion.
Czarge:
You're right ... Mariotti is the penultimate nabob of negativity, and a bandwagon jumper of the highest order.
He's been in "Cubbie Camp" all season long, but if the Sox make some noise in the post season look for Jay to be singing the praises of Ozzie; a guy he's continually trashed as both a human being, and a manager.
Jay can't decide wether he wants his eggs sunny side up, or scrambled.
He wants them both ways.
I'm happy for Brian. Mariotti can go back the east coast, where he belongs.
I am not concerned with Urlacher's personal life. However, I am concerned with the way he plays the game and he is one the best! He deserves every penny of that money and then some! he worked his ass off! Were you even watching last season?! Why are you wasting the loyal fans time with how much money he wants..If you are so hard up for a Bears story why don't you talk about the horrible disgrace that makes a sane person want to gouge their eyes open with a blunt object that we call REX or that hairy nonplaying wildabeast ORTON and how stupid the coaching staff have to be to let Thomas Jones go and KEEP Cedric Benson! Or maybe you'd like to tell us about your exciting life since you are so interested in Brian Urlachers babymama. He was one of the only reason to watch.
I'm from PITTSBURGH like Mariotti so maybe thats where the brain cells come from because the bears took a risk by giving that crybaby his first extension hoping he would last for nine years and now that he made it half way he wants to be rewarded again maybe when he's playing well at 32 he'll want the extension that lets him play until hes 40. Also by then ok lets do Urlacher math the bears will be saving 3 million when Kevin Jones leaves town and 2 million when Orton follows don't forget about the 6 million they won't want to give hester and also the millions they'll save when they fire jerry angelo for his incompetance. So that means with all that and the possibility of an uncapped year then Urlacher should make an additional 46million for being the greediest chair builder. Oh wait I almost forgot with angelo fired the bears wont have a GM dumb enough to give Urlacher another extension; unless maybe they replace him with Ozzy (ha,ha) go cubs.
See, this is what I don't get about this new system here.... where's my comment about Urlacher and the Kankakee County skanks? Skank isn't a bad word, is it? I mean, I didn't call anyone in particular a skank, I just said that he deserves the bump and is also deserving of a new clause about staying away from skanks in any zip code. I typed the practically invisible characters below, waited the prescribed 2 minutes for the system to apparently scan for swear words, and it came up that my comment was being held by the blog owner, and thank you. Speaking of, where the h-e-double-hockey-sticks is Roman?
FLASH: NEW YORK TIMES profit drops 82%...
$18 million more to share with out-of-wedlock moms on child support.
He should be so proud.
Heck, WE should be so proud.
I know I am.
Can we give him a key to the city now?
How about a statue?
How about a St. Gerard medal to wear around his neck (patron saint of expectant mothers)?
I predict within 10 years of retiring, we will see his photo on the back of some milk jug and/or the Bears will hold a "Save Brian from Himself" day.
We get you, Bculz...
Urlacher for Congress!
Villano:
Columnists play both sides of the aisle against the middle. Their job is to be controversial or thoughtful and sometimes both. You may complain, but you read Mariotti. Compare that to Rick Morissey or Downey or Haugh at the Tribune. I don't believe I have ever finished one of Morissey or Downey's columns. They are plain vanilla. Haugh is just so out of sync with everything that I read his columns just for a laugh.
Mariotti may be an ass, but he is an ass that brings readers to the paper. Roger Clemens, by all accounts, is an ass, but an ass who put paying customers in seats. Same goes for Frank Thomas, Barry Bonds, A-Rod, John McEnroe, Nick Faldo and numerous other athletes. So before you go off on a rant about nabobs of negativity, remember all of those other asses you watch (or read) simply because they bring something extra to the game or the column.
Maybe you like your world vanilla white. Too bad. You're missing a lot of the diversity of opinion that makes this nation and its sports great.
Seedy, you are more angy about Urlachers libido than his Babys momma are. Whats up with that?
Also...could you channel some of that Anger towards a good cause, like preventing ILLEGALS from coming over here and having Children at a staggering rate.
At least we dont have to PAY FOR BRIANS BABYS, not so sure about....the rest of them.
Bculz:
We pay for our congressional leaders' illegal and quasi-legal acts, why not our illegals? Arizona sounds like it's getting to you. Stay in the air conditioning.
I don't have any anger towards Brian "Bubblehead" Urlacher. I just laugh at how we pay up for all these folks with "character." You know, that's a hallmark of the Angelo-Lovie-Turner system.
Isn't this the same franchise who battled Dick Butkus for years over a medical claim, yet richly rewards Urlacher, who plays 18 holes a day (if you know what I mean), but is fortunate enough to have loads of "hush money" to cover most of his tracks.
well..its sounds to me seedy, that you have a problem seperating APPLES from ORANGES..
Doing Crimes = Kicking of team
Not wearing a jimmy hat = may make you a real dbag, but not illegal (last time i checked).
If you kicked every guy in pro sports out for not wrapping up their package, then you would have NO SPORTS AT ALL.
your probably isnt with Urlacher, its with proper labeling.
So Bculz, you're willing to give athletes a pass on social mores and personal responsibility? For what reason? Because they can tackle someone? Because they can hit a round ball with a round bat?
Dude, in two words: That blows.
I can live with no sports at all if it means I no longer have to read about whiny, self indulgent, multimillionaires who flaunt rules, laws and social norms solely for the purpose of satisfying themselves or because they believe they can get away with it.
The athletes -- not the agents -- are ruining professional sports. And it's only going to get worse.
Seedy...we need to have my Code A/Code B discussion...
its starts like this..
Everyone talks about living a CODE A life..
by the book, upstanding, and right as rain...and most importantly...the one you tell EVERYONE ELSE TO LIVE By.
but secretly everyone lives a CODE B life...
See John Edwards for a recent example of this...
you seem to care more about what other men do in their free time than what you are paying them to do.
No laws were broken, I am not the moral authority....although you think i may be in here...
but in reality...
Urlachers being a male slut does not equate to gun charges or drug charges or DUI's or whatever else has gotten players kicked off teams.
Having Children out of wedlock...may suck...but...its not illegal.
I think you should channel that anger to more worth whiled issues...
like...Ending Sanctuary Cities...
BCulz...
Such a cavalier attitude...
You must have no kids.
Seedy...dude...which of these definitions are you thinking of when you call me Cavalier?
Main Entry: 1cav·a·lier
Pronunciation: \ˌka-və-ˈlir\
1: a gentleman trained in arms and horsemanship
2: a mounted soldier : knight
3capitalized : an adherent of Charles I of England
4: gallant
How did you know I was a Knight??
also...why would having kids transform my opinion on illegal aliens?
Cavalier:
A cheap, poor handling, underpowered rust bucket, manufactured by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1982 to 2005.
