Favre coming back? You want him Bears fans?

The news today that Brett Favre is getting the itch to un-retire reminds me of an argument I had with a friend of mine on the copy desk.

I wanted to refer to an online poll I put together on whether the Bears should try to get Favre to un-retire and try to sign them.

Jeff said he retired and there's no way he's coming back and it's silly to put a refer to that. After all, Favre's agent said there was nothing to the rumors that Favre was coming back. We all know agents always tell the entire truth.

I'm not sure if Jeff ran the refer, but I'm going to put together another one and make sure it gets in the paper. Looks more and more likely that Favre will play, and I'm guessing the Packers won't have him back as they finally commit to Aaron Rodgers.

So which teams are quarterback-challenged and might want Favre in camp? Gee. I wonder.

Comments

Rodgers is better than Favre, so heck yeah...bring back the pick machine... and Favre will never be anything but a Packer ...he still has two years left on a contract, I believe...so he'd have to be traded...GB wont take Rex...nobody will...muscle memory classes anyone?!...oh boy I can't wait for this year

Newsflash...Favre was great but overrated in the same breath...his interceptions cost the Packers dearly in terms of Superbowls they should have been in/won....like just last year...who threw that pick?...Take two Vicodin, pull off those Wranglers (lol), and lay down, Brettsy...maybe the notion will pass...Marino was twice the QB, btw

and ya know..Kyle made Favre look like the 'just sobered up 3rd year player' last year....he made him look bad...and then Kyle took out Drew...Kyle is our QB

Get used to it...we're riding with Kyle this year...and I'll go ahead and say I told ya so right now...

oh boy..football....I almost had a pulse just now

Although Farve only won one Super Bowl, he does have somewhat of a legacy. With the mentality of today's historically challenged fans, I wouldn't doubt that he holds a higher place in Packer's lore than Bart Starr.

That said; it would be ludicrious for him to sacrifice his standing as a beloved icon in that community just to play one or two more years for another team; let alone a division rival.

I doubt that he'd be able to sell many cars or insurance policies in Green Bay, if he finished his career as a back-up in Chicago.

Personally, I hope he plays for the Pack as we've had his number now for a few years.

If Favre plays, he'll play in Green Bay. If he wants to play, he wants to play not learn a new offense. Imagine if Butkis wanted to come back and he signed with Minnesota. NEVER would've happened.
Peace,
Rick

Would I like to have Farve in a Bear uniform? Yeah. Do we need a QB? Oh god Yeah. Is he better than the guys we have? Ummm yesss. Is there any chance he will be a Bear? No, none, zero, not in this or any other lifetime. He wouldn't even play hear if we offered him the money. He's not crazy, just look at the team. No proven running game, the second worse recieving core in the nfl and a bad oline. Not all the the tea in China is gonna bring him hear. He's a cheese head for life.

It would be the worst/best, saddest/happiest day of my life. But in the end, I'd redecorate the Rex Bandwagon into a Brett Welcome Wagon! (and people think Jim Edmonds looks weird in a Cubs uniform...)

Is it possible that his itch might be due to something else?

Ricky responds: Is that a side effect of pain killers?

Julie...the PV bandwagon
doesnt select its QB's based on LOOKS my dear...i hate to break it to you. NO FAVRE WILL EVER TOUCH MY WAGON!!NOT WHILE IM DRIVING.

I SWEAR I JUST SAW "CATS AND DOGS LIVING TOGETHER" ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK!!!!!

Typical Bears fans. Dumb as they come. You are all just jealous because the Bears (not "you", since I doubt any of you have ever played for the Bears, much less a down of football) haven't had a decent quarterback since, well, we'll leave it at that. Kyle Orton better than Favre? That's brilliant. Once again proving how stupid all you people from Chicago are. I had better set aside time to go to Kyle's Hall of Fame induction.

I was just sitting behind a CHEDDER YELLOW SCION W/ CHSEHED on the PLATES and PACKER HELMUT DECAL @ Starbucks...I made sure to HONK right when she got her coffee.

*and yes, i am doing what i can to keep starbucks up and running...

No thanks! We already have enough quarterbacks who throw interceptions in key games!

I think Anonymous is Favre. He's got nothing else to do!!

I have suffered through a mixed NFL marriage for 20 years (me Bears, he Packers). I can't imagine Favre wearing a Bears uniform, but if he did.....it would be fun to watch the top of my husband's head pop off.

Greenbay would love to have Grossman. They are used to all the picks, but his touch and willingness to 'buck' the system is what they really crave. I would be a packers fan in an instant-I thought that would never happen. Chicago would just love to hammer the over rated Brett Favre any chance they get. He would be the ultimate Excuse for everything that is wrong with the Bears. Unfortunately-he would probably go to Atlanta. There he will end his career just as he started it. On the Bench.

you didn't have to spell anonymous on your own did ya..

Typical Wisconsin-educated idiot...I said Kyle Orton handed Favre his a$$ last year...and he did

Favre crying about the cold should have told you he has lost his edge...

and Rodgers is better than Brett...see Dallas game

Yet another example of GB committing to Favre...and losing

He will always be the all-time interceptions leader..and when it came to the big games...he lost more than he won...deal with it

Farve is on OUT!...don't want him as a BEAR, he will forever be with the hated Pack, If he does come back, I say let the D-line tee off on him. I'm still pissed we let him have a swan song on our field two years ago when he cried about leaving the game....Real BEARS fans hate the PACK....simple as that.....Kudos to cap master negotiating contracts for the team, get them signed , get them in camp, coach em up and let's go....Offense is key to season, if they get in top 20, we are in Playoffs....I'm with Orton....

You didn't know that anonymous? Kyle, he of no playoff appearances or victories, or SB wins. He, who passes like J Quinn, and looks like J Quinn standing in the pocket. The man who had two decent games, and one bad game is WAY better than the hall of fame QB. I don't get it either. Favre is a Hall Of Fame QB, with some off the chart lifetime stats.

But, my friend, Orton is better. His pocket presence, and the fact he does not look like a deer in headlights makes him better than any QB alive. We don't need Brett, we have Kyle.

If we can get the hall of famer, let's do it.

Favre is 22-10 against the bears....as a pack fan ill take that any day!!! Favre was (is?) a qb that might take risks at times but he is one that makes plays consistantely. One of the best qb's our generation will ever see!! and by far the most fun to watch....and dont fail him in comparison to marino you uneducated slob....favre didnt have near the recivers dan had and there numbers are almost exactly the same(qb ratig)!!! and no bears fan can talk about overated as long as you have Urslacker on your roster!!!!! hes not even the best MLB in the division!!!! hell....hes not even the best LB on the bears roster!!! as urlacher said "overated.....you want overated, ill show you overated but youll have to give me a new contract!!!!

I think Favre coming back to the Packers would be to the Bears' benefit, but he's probably not going to come back anywhere. That's fine with me because I am so sick of hearing him praised as the second coming by the Wisconsin cheeseheads. Living in Wisconsin is absolutely great except for the Greenbay Pack-it-inners and their silly fans. By the way, reread Anonymous's grammatically incorrect ( repeatedly ) diatribe and you can appreciate my sentiments more readily.

Who cares about Farve...Pack fan he's gone...stop wishing he would come back, and by the WAY....We Still LEAD The
SERIES all-time.......next time you drop in come up with a name rotted-cheese head....and one more thing....the last thing Farve will remember as a player is the butt whippin we gave him last year in the last Bear packer game he played in........ GO BEARS

I'll say this much though, he is a Hall of Famer and the INT King!!!....LOL

lmao...I rest my case..

I guess sparklers are freaking dangerous for some...Here's to hopin you bought lots of mortars, anonymous...

Happy 4th everyone

Yes, I would like to have Favre but in no way would Favre want to be a Bear. We have RB's who can not run, a line that can not block and WR's who can not catch.

Bears Fans if you think a QB is the only thing that is keeping us from the Super Bowl then you are twisted. This team has a lot of holes offensively. I do not want to see a QB drafted or traded for until the other issues Offensively have been solved. Even ToM Brady could not cure this teams ills offensively.

I would take farve right after he left the bar over what we currently have. I would take McMahon right now!

Wonder if the Bears will not sign a RB until D Hester gets his? They have to be somewhere near the cap, don't they? Harris getting his, Briggs getting his, Urlacher wants his, Vasher and Tillman last year, they better bring us a SB berth again with all this money invested in them. Vazquez looks filthy in the third inning today.

I love when bloggers refer to "Bearsfans" as if we are a seperate group from them.

Then you get the morons who call out bears fans and then take ownership for the team, and say something like "we" or "i" would do this or that....flipping hilarous to watch.

Quite the identity crisis you got on your hands there PJP.

mcmahon's 2 cases of coors light a day habit might bet against you on that one kltss

Regarding his retirement / employment status with the Packers, Farve holds all the cards.

The Packers have rights to him if he decides that he still wants to play, as he is under contract for two more years at $12 million per. As long as he's retired his salary doesn't count against the cap, but things get messy if he chooses to come back for another season.

The Pack used a 1st round pick in 2005 for Aaron Rodgers, and two more picks for that position in '08. They'd either have to play Farve, sit Rodgers, and jetison the prospects, or cut Farve loose.

They have no other options, because the rest of the teams are aware of the situation, and would have no reason to make a trade for Farve knowing full well that he has the Packers backed into a corner. Why would any team sacrifice anything of value in a trade under these circumstances?

Green Bay has two choices here; play Farve, or watch him walk away without compensation. The rest of the NFL knows this.

I love watching the Packers suffer.

The Bears have enough problems at QB with fundamentals and Brett Favre wouldn't listen to anyone.

I hope Brett Favre comes out of retirement after feeling the 'itch' to play again with the Packers. And, if he returns, I hope the Bears make him scratch more than an 'itch' in another 'freezing cold' game at Soldier Field in December. Hopefully, Favre will throw 2-3 INTS, 'sail' countless passes over his receivers heads, and continue his 'poor decision making' as he's been accustomed to doing in recent games.

Favre's possible return would purely be for selfish reasons for both for him and myself after the Packers drafted quarterbacks in the 2nd (Louisville's Brian Brohm) and 7th rounds (LSU's Matt Flynn) along with having Aaron Rodgers as his successor, creating a new offensive identity, and team chemistry.

First, his 'selfish' return would ruin anything the Packers have tried to build since his retirement and possibly cause bad feelings toward him in the Packers locker room. And, secondly, Favre's return would give me the chance of watching the Bears 'pound' him once more.

My only feeling regret is the December 22 game at Soldier Field is scheduled to be on ESPN on Monday night and not scheduled for Sunday or NBC. If the game was on NBC, I could watch and listen to Favre's #1 FAN in John Madden grimace about the shots he would be taking and the 'risk' he took coming out of retirement.

haha yall hav no idea ya u had favres number?????????? u jokin wat u beat him last year because u beat favre bs u won cause we couldnt guard a big reciver or te all year! and thts y we lost the nfc championship plax beat us not favre iif it wasnt 4 the pats cheatin and gettin nmoss brett wooda had his 4th mvp favres the best all round qb in the nfc romo couldn choke anymore and elis too inexperienced theyre not getin bak to the sb and neithr r u bears without a qb and a good runin bak with a eithr young an inexperienced player or a way to experienced vetran player u guys dont hav a hope all u got is urlacher who might not get paid hestr hoo is a freak andf the only reason yall won a game last year and ur big tight end so good luck with ur season nxt year but jst remember the last game before the playoffs in ur sb year which was a joke and ask urself if u want favre bak

The question is would I as a Bear fan want to see Brett Favre as the Quarterback. He-- yes. Sure he'll throw picks, but how much of that was because of his legend status? I'll be happy to indulge further, but I have other points. The Packer O-line was inexpierenced two years ago, their wide outs were unproven, besides Driver, and they had no running game. As weird as it may be to see Brett Favre in a Bears uniform, as it was to see Jimmy Mac in a Packer uniform, Favre would be perfect for the Bears. The quarterback play alone, but the leadership would be priceless. Everybody in that locker room would respect what he'd have to say.

No No No!
There is no way that I can accept Brett Favre in a Bears uniform.
I do not care how bad Rex Grossman may be this season there are boundaries that you do not cross as a Bears fans and bringing in the hillbilly to QB our team is right at the top.
Come on people! It is Brett Favre we are talking about and if you want him then you are not a real bears fan.

Wait! How about the Bears bringing in Favre and cutting him because Grossman beats him out for the job? That alone would kill half of the Packer fans and that is a good start.
God I hate the Packers and their inbreed fans.

first and for most, im a die hard bears fan!!! hell yeah i would take brett favre, the man still has it. you people who wouldnt take him are fools! he started out last year with 1 WR last year and that was all, and he ended with a really good team. oh yeah, and whats this i read about orton should be our QB? thats a joke, he is mediocre at best. good backup but thats it. who said in here that rodgers was better than farve? whoever it was is the biggest fool in the room!!!

My what short term memories Bears fans have.

For you Kyle Orton lovers: He's a vanilla quarterback. His inability to stretch the field will threaten no defense. By midseason defenses will clamp down and stack the box to pressure him taking away his only successful passing routes - the short ones. Kyle succeeded last year because he followed Grossman into the huddle. Teams were preparing as if Grossman were to play by staying back and respecting the deep ball which opened the shorter lanes. Had the season stretched a few more games, you would see defenses start to shut Kyle down.

As for Favre, regardless of how experienced he is, it would take him 2 seasons to be productive in another system. does anybody want to commit to a guy who hasn't been able to decide if he wants to play or not for the past several seasons? How long is the rope for a veteran everybody hangs their hopes on in exchange fo the delay in developing the quarterback of the future for the franchise? Problem with this scenario is Favre holds all the cards because he can retire at any moment and really screw the team if they don't have a replacement ready to go.

If Favre were a bit younger, maybe he'd be an option. But his main weakness is making dumb mistakes passing deep when pressured. That's why Lovie Smith's system works where Wannstedt's and Jauron's fail. Favre is a late Joe Montana or Steve Deberg. He may have something left in the tank, but there's no telling how much because when you get to the end of a tank, the engine sputters inconsistently until it just dies completely. To get the last drops, you have to shake the tank and do all kinds of crazy maneuvers to keep it going. What would the Bears have to do to keep Favre going when that day arrives?

What would the bears do with a quarterback? They've gone for years without one, wouldn't know what to do with one if they had one. Besides, they've got Rex. Why would anyone want Brett when you have Rex? One other small matter, what makes you think Brett would ever want to play in chicago? Think he's in awe of Jerry, Lovie and Ron? He didn't want to play for sherman's new offense, why would he want to play for the Bears' no offense? I think the bears would be about last on his list of teams to play for, right after detroit and arizona. But keep dreaming bears fans, then wake up to 16 sundays of Rexecution.

I changed my mind...as long as they go live in practice..I'd love to have Brett on the Bears..

Anybody else excited at the thought of a healthy Mike Brown and what that defense could do injury providing...or is it notwithstanding?

you're darn right wow withnotprovidingastand-ing

...so I blew off my thumb and pinky last night...yep..makes it easier to draw me as a Simpson!....
no....but if you know someone who blew off those digits...now you know how to cheer em up ("Hey Man?!".."Doh?!")...and if you have enough money..
take 'em to Roswell..

Just one of the many reasons I'm not the make a wish coordinator..

**takes a bow**

Favre was stupid to retire in the first place. People don't just stop wanting to live or succeed or have fun. He should have asked for a brief vacation or gone into semi-retirement.

JB...Roman means do you "want him" on our team....not just in General!

ALL I KNOW IS LOVIE IS 4-2 AGAINST THE PACK..

WE DONT NEED HIM!!!

favrefan, I have one question for you:

WHAT???????

Philtration sez: "God I hate the Packers and their inbreed fans."

This is what happens when you mix Cheddar Head genes with Colby genes.

The end result stinks like Limburger, and has more holes in it than Swiss.

Tye:

That was good!

Jon:

I don't know who said that Rodgers is better than Farve, (the jury has yet to even convene) but I'll tell you this; he's pretty damned good, and he'd start in front of Grossman and Orton on any team in the NFL.

Except perhaps, the Bears.

TAKE HIM RIGHT NOW!!!!

Wait, what? OMG - Hitman, are you okay? Are you typing with one hand? Ok, you don't have to answer the last one.

WHY DIDNT THE CUBS LISTEN TO ME????

I feel bad for Aaron Rodgers. Poor guy must be having the worst summer!

Yep Julie...if I was Rodgers, I'd freaking quit...but it is the Packers...so I hope they eat it on this one

Thompson's reaction to the text message was freaking funny, tho

Farve shouldnt quit. George Foreman never did. Bears are too stupid to take him. But he has enough to help a team like Chicago.

Hitman I hope you are kidding.
