Do the Sox have a team capable of winning the World Series, or should they make a deal?
KYLE says:
With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, teams around baseball are looking at their roster and asking themselves if they can win with what they have or if they need to make a trade-deadline deal. Joe Cowley, Ricky's beat writer crush, explores the White Sox mindset today.
What do you think the Sox should do? With the Twins nipping at their heels, will Kenny and Ozzie decide they need some additional help to make it to the postseason or will they stand pat?
And, will this post come back to haunt Roman if they make the wrong decision?

I would say YES....i heard Gary, Indiana is making a comeback and could use a Ball Team!!!
How about a trade of slummping Paul Konerko, Contreas and Brian Anderson with a Pitching Prospect or two to the Mariners for Ichiro and Bedard? It looks like Seattle is trying to rebuild and cut costs, maybe we could eat some of Paulie's contract for 09'? I think that would give us a more balenced line up and the extra pitching we could use down the stretch? Sounds like a pipe dream but I've see bigger names go for less this year, Harden and Sabathia.
I wanna get on the record for this one: no, the Sox don't need to make a move. Few reasons:
a) there farm system is so dilapidated already, they won't have the pieces to acquire a big name, even if a desirable one became available. I suppose Josh Fields could be dealt, but his value is surely at its lowest point right now, and resigning Crede is still a big if.
b) What do the Sox really need? The obvious answer would be a fifth starter and replacement for Contreras, but having five quality starting pitchers is extremely difficult. Contreras is better than at least 60-70% (if not more) of fifth starters in the majors. The Sox other four starters have to step it up (I'm looking at you, Javy), and they'll be fine.
c) I don't think the Twins are that good. No need to make a big move when you don't have to. Just find a way to win the division and get into the playoffs, and take things from there.
Are you kidding me! Do the Sox have enough to win the World Series. They dont even have enough right now to win the division! Lets just be honest, I have watched or listened to every game this year (mostly watched all of them. Here is a rundown
1. Konerko - Is Dead worthless weight.
2. Contreras - Is History
3. Crede - Is an error waiting to happen and at the plate he is too streaky.
4. Cabrera - makes odd errors and wierd baserunning mistakes.
5. Logan - Is untrustworthy.
We can say all that we want about, oh their going to come around. If we dont make a move for a starting pitched, bench pauly, and get Crede figured out. WE ARE DONE. What is so sad about all of this, this is the YEAR we have an opportunity to win this division. Minnesota is just going to get better and do you think Detroit and Clevland will tank next year too? Not a chance. So THIS is the year to win this division and if we dont do anything, I say we get what we deserved a third place finish.
Here are the moves the Sox should make:
1. Tape Ozzie's mouth shut
2. Light fire under Konerko's a**
3. Put Swisher back at first, sit/DH Konerko
4. Believe in Don Cooper and the pitching staff
5. Get a steal (extra pitcher) if possible, but don't mortgage future
6. Win ugly, play Ozzie ball, win one for the Gipper, play one day at a time, whatever it takes to keep winning 3 out of every 5 games.
Some people crack me up with their proposed trades. No one ever factors in the salaries that would be involved either. This team needs another starter, or long relief guy, and perhaps a speedy guy who can hit for average near the top of the order. Something they can get, if they really want to.
If they do need one, I suggest Psyllium Husks and four liters of water.
Yes, but will they....no. They have a team capable of making the World Series and beating anyone when they play. But that has been the thing lately. Cant get them to play. They are the most underachieving nerve wracking team in the league! They have the veteran presence and pitching to get it done, but play to their competition. THE ROYALS....are you kidding me???
Most of the people calling for a big acquisition have no idea what they are talking about.
PITCHING) Our starting pitching has been a strength and though it is coming back to earth, it is still more solid 1-5 than almost any other team. Javy had Cy Young material at the start of the season and I doubt he forgot how to pitch then since he's been one of the most dependable pitchers (198 Innings or more for the last 8 seasons). Contreras is a better 5th starter than almost any has in the AL and has the added possibility of getting hot and carrying your team for the stretch (didn't he win 17 or so straight decisions 2 years back?). Our bullpen is solid and will improve when the roles are resettled with Jenks' return. A righty specialist would be great since the disappearance of Wasserman though.
OFFENSE) Konerko does not need to be traded now. The man simply produces, look at his RBIs since 2000. If he's simply not the PK he was in past than he's still a great 5 hitter instead of a 3 or 4. NO way you can find an equal, let alone improvement, for cheaper considering the hometown discount we got for him or the trade value lost.
Last year we needed a center fielder, a second baseman and a shortstop. Kenny filled those roles well. In the beginning of the season people didn't want Danks or Flyod to start. Kenny had faith and was right. Let's believe in the guy for once.
Let's prop up the roof before it caves in. Trade. A guy at the top of the order and a fifth starting pitcher.Contact teams that are out
of it and building for next year.
yes, i think they should make a trade ,but we have problems.
1.) yes we should get rid off paulie, but we cant he has the no trade clause because he is been here for 10 plus
2.) we dont have any pitching prospects
3.) we cant get rid of josh fields, because he is our insurance policy if crede goes.
so what do we do?????????
suggestion: look at what we do have:your suppose to have 2 good shortstops in the minors,a couple outfielders that are close to being ready because dye, swisher, and quentin arent going anywhere and crede who will walk we know boras come on dont kid yourself.
offer what you got out of that junk and see if you cant pry aj burnett. we need a true number 11/2.
No one will give the Sox anything but Cabrera has to be removed from the leadoff spot Konerko and Thome should platoon at DH and Anderson and Wise should platoon in center with Wise leading off when in the game, Fields and Owens (when healthy) should be brought up and if Nasset and Contreas fails Lance Broadway should be given a chance. The only way to get a trade done is off the major league roster or pitching prospect on the roster. Konerko may have some value to a west coast contender that needs a bat that's when his history could be a value maybe get real lucky and the Angels will give up Figgins.
