Bears' QB competition? Who cares

| | Comments (62)

Why are so many people excited that Kyle Orton will finally get a chance to win the starting QB job?

It's a competition between two mediocre candidates. It's not between a prized rookie and a declining star.

Rex will start. He's more talented. And he'll probably disappoint.

Kyle Orton had his shot last season starting games. At this point, what I'm looking at is if the players around the QB position are any better. Those are the bigger question marks in my opinion. Is Chris Williams the real deal? Where are the beat reports on the rookie workouts? How is Booker and Lloyd looking out there? I already know what we have in Rex and Kyle. No matter how the QB competition gears up, Rex will still have his bashers and people will still cry that there is no competition at all. It's just old. So yes, for me, who cares?? With the offense, I want to see improvement in the offensive line and receivers, tight ends included. I want to see Greg Olsen actually play like a first round pick this season. Matt Forte, just stay healthy man. PJ Pope, sleeper RB of the year!

Correct on all counts.

I hope Rex does start, but it's not a who cares sort of thing.
Yet this competition should have occured earlier in his career.
I don't think Rex will dissapoint; given the chance I think this year he will show more. I think we all know he has the talent and I believe he will show that on a consistent basis.

Rex Grossman can't play for any team in the league but the Bears.
Unreal.

Rex Grossman can't play for any team in the league but the Bears.
Unreal.

The Gimp Grossman is too afraid, to be a NFL QB. In fear,he falls down and gets put on the DL because he is sooooo fragile. The Gimp Grossman's scrambled brain and lack of courage doesn't allow him to step up into the pocket, he runs backward and throws interceptions while off balance!

The Bears should have dumped the chump Grossman, he is too brittle and has too many brain cramps!!!!!!!!

Go Bears, Go Orton!

Orton had a million chances to start. Maybe would should put helmet on his beard and give it a chance to start. Rex will be good if we can give him a line.

my wife busted up laughing at you just now....nuff said

If you get excited by Rex vs. Orton then you must live an extremly dull life.

I agree - Rex will start, and dissapoint. Have no clue why they brought back these two clowns. Any team with post-season aspirations would have moved on long ago.

It will take a while for other pieces (o-line, new receivers, running game) to gell.

Essentially the Bears have huge questions at QB, RB, O-Line, and Receivers. The Defense is also coming off a sub-par season and with the potential hold out of captain Urlacher, all signs point towards a repeat of 07.

Based on the above, every analyst outside of Chicagoland will have a dismal outlook for 2008.

Neither one of these guys does anything for me (I mean that in a hetero way)
Grossman is still the more talented of the two and anyone who says that he could not start for any other team has not looked around the league. The NFL is full of bad QBs with a hand full of good to great ones thrown in.
I would rather hear about the rookies progress then to rehash this mess again.

Romanator:

Am surprised by you. You might be a little out of touch with your reader base.

If I recall, a number of reporters last year mentioned how good a pre-season Orton had. In fact, I recall some saying he was the best performing QB in camp. Little good it did him.

Then watching Wrecks stumble and bumble around for most of the season, we got to watch Orton win 2 of 3 at the end of the season -- beating the Packers and the Saints -- both of whom had playoff dreams (only one realized).

Of course, all this means that Wrecks will be the starting QB at the season's start because between Angelo, Lovie and Turner, their combined football IQ when it comes to QBs is 78, which means they can spell "CAT" if you spot them the "C" and the "A", but are unable to spell "WIN" when given the "W" and "I".

Wrecks may have the better tools, but he just doesn't know how to use them. Wrecks also has had the full support of the Bears' "brain trust" (and yes, that's a very generous description of Bears' management). I would like to see Orton get that same level of support for at least 8 games to see what he can do.

It's not about who throws the prettier ball, but who gets the job done. Last year, with far more games under his belt, Wrecks could not get the job done. Orton looked like he could.

Time to sit Wrecks and play Kyle.

In 2007, Eli was toasted in NY, and Romo was praised in Dal. at the beginning of 2008, 1's SB winner, and the other is the 64 million dollar baby(who took a pay cut). There is no competition at QB unless, and this is a big if: Orton learns to throw to receiver's hands and not their (feet, knee, back, over their head, behind them, in front of them.)

Don't think that is possible in one offseason, but anythings possible.

BTW, a bigger battle is the line, we need 5 solid starters, and we have about 3 now. Last year was a fluke with all the injuries, people don't realize how important it is to have both starting corners and your starting FS, tackle, and others in there most of the games, not just a few.

Sarish sez: " I think we all know he has the talent and I believe he will show that on a consistent basis."

What good is talent without size, strength, and mobility?

"Consistent" and "Rex" do not belong in the same sentence, unless we're talking about him being consistently erratic.

Villano:

"consistently erratic"

And that would be an oxymoron.

If we cut enough players, maybe we can the Cowboys will win the Superbowl next year.

Suddenly, Kyle Orton's a complete bum?

Not sure I buy it, Roman. I've been an Orton fan from day one (and a Rex-hater since he was drafted), but I'm not sure it's time to write Orton off as not worth the interest. He's not going to get the time Rex had to "mature" (read: show any trace of the talent we're paying first-round money in the hope he eventually demonstrates it), but he's a step up from Jon Quinn, Chad Hutchinson, and everyone else.

I think Orton has potential, but this is definitely a put-up or shut-up year for him. The lack of a competent veteran (sorry, Brian Griese; I'm just not that into you) to mentor him has been a considerable problem; we'll see what happens, though.

Byron Leftwich, anyone?

Disagree with you on this one Roman. I think Orton can be a solid QB for the Bears, he has had a chance to watch and learn finally, he's been successful in a limited but key role off the bench, understands how to play in cold weather, and seems to have the respect of his teammates in the locker room. I'd admit as a life long Bear fan it won't take much to make me happy from our QB, but no turnovers, fumbles, and not making the defense have to work harder than they should to Win the game. These are the traits Rex has shown us repeatedly over the last two years. It's not about talent its about winning games, Man. Get off the Rex bandwagon Roman and help Chicago turn the page.

First of all rex has and will always underpreform, the Bears always have a do their players a disservice by annointing them to a position even when they waiver and everyone else can see it but them. The worst phrase that we kept hearing which i know the bears have banished by now tell me if you guys have heard this one. But he threw three picks and got sacked twice are you still sticking with him? I repeat Rex is our quaterback. Orton is ok with a better arm but not much better. Hopefully the receivers can make them look better than they actually are.

I see Jay Mariotti has signed a contract extension with the Sun Times. This is a great victory for pesimism and for people in Chicago who hate Chicago sports! Congrats Jay! Good job Sun Times!!

Hitwoman?

I think the majority of Rex' problems come from his early injuries. The 'Fear Factor' or 'Yellow Streak' (whichever you prefer) outweigh his talent and reduces him to a bridesmaid. While Orton is not your 'Stud Q.B.', he sure didn't look as bad or undecisive as Rex. Plus, it sure doesn't hurt to be a few inches taller to see where the 'action' is coming from. Grossman, from all accounts, really never had a clue. Sight and feel sure in the heck didn't come into play. The bottom line is, I'll take the signal caller who'll be inclined to give, an otherwise talented team, the chance of letting the sum of the whole win it, than losing it himself, and the "Fumbleceptor" is not that man.

Bradshaw and Favre were both winning quarterbacks with 'talent' and 'gunslinger' attitude, much like Rex, but the cast of characters surrounding those two was head over heels better than what Grossman has to add into.

Talent is not the answer.

Addition by subtraction is.

Comments like these are what have made me a self hating Bears fan, Grossman does nothing but bust his ass, gets us to a superbowl and we treat him as if he were the enemy. I am embarassed and ashamed at some of the dopes that I have to sit next at our own home games and boo our starting quarterback. REX IS A CHICAGO BEAR MORONS!

Val...there is an opening on the REXWAGON...hop aboard!!!

Villano, first of all I realize that Rex hasn't been consistent, but I do think he can be
he does have strenght if you mean arm strenght and it is not his fault for his injuries...it's unfortunate, but it happens and you deal.
yes he's not extremly tall...but many good QBs are not that tall (Brees)
and mobility isn't great, but that is why we do need a great o-line
not the extremly stupid one we had last year
the O-line needs to protect him. most teams build the team to help the QB, but it seems like the Bears don't always do that.

and Val I hear ya.

Ha.

This isn't a competition, no doubt.

Rex will easily win this, and he will prove he can be a very solid IF, a VERY BIG IF, he stay healthy.

orton's has flashes of mediocrity once in a while, while rex has shown flashes of greatness more often that orton shows flashes of mediocrity.

and lol at saying rex fumbles a lot, look at the stats, you have no idea what u are talking about, and you call yourself a bears fan.

orton is joke, and will never start a team unless it is due to injury* (hes not really good enough to be a 2nd stringer either, but the bears are stupid so he is)

Thought it was Chuck Wagon, but I guess it can be REXWAGON as well. Val, there are a good deal of Rex fans on this blog. We argue with the non-Rex fans all the time.

The problem is a few, Hitman for one, kinda overlooks all the good Rex does and the bad Orton does...but he's a rare one, most just don't like him and I can live with that, but they do stay in the realm of reality. Orton isn't accurate, and that is his downfall, he is a stronger presence in the pocket, though.

I'll take a more accutate QB who falls down at times, than an inaccurate QB who can see the field. Usually throwing to the field as well.

Under the topic heading:
"At Least I'm Sticking To A Football Blog" ...

... Is Jevon Walker not THE MOST STUPID S.O.B. on the planet?

His best friend died in his arms; shot after a similar incident ...

... he totally pisses off everyone in a nightclub called Tryst just a few hours before doing the exact same thing at a joint called Body English; then he get's whacked. Who could'a guessed?

If I could afford to be sitting in a high profile, expensive nightclub, wearing my best Do-Rags, I'd be dipped in s#*t before letting some jerk like Walker ruin my clothing, and the clothing of other people in my group, simply because he thought it was a good idea at the time.

Reports are now, that he was accosted in his suite after leaving the club.

I would have never let him get that far.

Is there a quarterback on earth that gets scrutinized more than Rex? Can't say Eli - his bad games were described as "Rex-like." I don't think the microscope he's been put under is fair, and I'm not just talking about the Chicago media. It's a national obsession. Past or present, can anyone think of another QB that's had to deal with the constant nit-picking that Rex has? Maybe Aaron Rodgers will take some of the heat this season. Big shoes to fill up there.

Julie sez: "Past or present, can anyone think of another QB that's had to deal with the constant nit-picking that Rex has?"

Can you say, Ryan Leaf?

Jeff George?

Rick Mirer?

The list goes on and on.

The funny thing is that nobody had the high expectations for Rex that they did for these countless other busts.

But a bust is a bust; by any other standard.

I KNEW someone was going to compare Rex to Eli. See folks, ELI WON when his defense lifted him to the Superbowl. Yall forgot he already choked away our shot didnt you? Rex gave our ship to ELI's BROTHER!!!!

I don't think we are all that bad off at QB. We have a guy who was the starter for a team that went to the Superbowl, and one that might have the make-up to start in the NFL. I started thinking, how many other teams quarterback would I rather have? I could maybe stretch it to 10. That's it. The Bears problems on offense is not who starting at QB, rather what o-line is going to show up? Who is going to be our play makers at the receiver postion and at running back. I have a hard time calling Rex a bust. Maybe that's my ignorance. Orton hasn't been given a real shot to play that postion, yet. We'll see if our O-Coordinator has learned from his mistakes as well. How can Norv be terrific with young QB's and Ron suck?

You're talking about QB busts, and nobody mentions me?

What am I? An orphan?

Yo Keith, did you even read my comment? You're such a skimmer! Come on, go back and read it, you'll get it.

(Hey, how 'bout our Sox!!!!)

Its only June right??

Mark...i thought the same think about Jevon Walker..

I mean...when are these hi profile atheletes gonna realize that

"making it rain" never results in something positive...

its actually at this time that I would want to blame the music industy for this one....and Im not talking about Lil Wayne or Fat Joe......

thats right....im talking about the founding father of "making it rain"

She took all my money
And my best friend
You know the story
Here it comes again

I have no pride
I have no shame
You gotta make it rain
Make it rain

Since you're gone
Deep inside it hurts
I'm just another sad guest
On this dark Earth

I wanna believe
In the mercy of the World again
Make it rain
Make it rain

Night's too quiet
Stretched out alone
I need the whip of thunder
And the winds dark moan

I'm not Abel
I'm just Kane
Open up the Heavens
Make it rain

I'm close to Heaven
Crushed at the gate
They sharpen their knives
On my mistakes

What she done
You can't give it a name
You gotta just make it rain
Make it rain
Yeah -eh

Without her love
Without your kiss
Hell can't burn me
More than this

I'm burning with all this pain
Put out the fire
And make it rain

I'm born to trouble
Born to fate
Inside a promise
I can't escape

It's the same old World
But nothin' looks the same
Make it rain
Make it rain

Gotta make it rain
Make it rain
You've got to
Make it rain
You got to
Make it rain
You got to

Yes Mark..Javon Walker...dumb...but hey..at least he got what he deserved

back to topic..

Break out your 8's people...unsightly brake dust, ya know

I wonder what your 32's are doing right this moment..

Kyle is our QB...Bo knows...and if Tiger is an athlete..find me the best Archer in the world and we'll have them race...

how could you ever rally a team of grown men with a name like Kyle!!!

Rex is bad, but at least there is History there....

Kyle , is American for "Popped Purple Pollo Collar"

Culzie and Mark, despite the names, Tryst and Body English are not strip clubs. Tryst is in the Wynn and Body English is in the Hard Rock Hotel, and I've been to both. They are jam-packed nightclubs with lots of music, drinking, dancing and flirting, and clothes are not optional. I find it hard to believe the "making it rain" story happened at either one of those places. Is it possible he was targeted because of who he is and how much cash and jewelry he likely had with him? He was found outside, not in his suite, so maybe he was on his way to or from Club Paradise which is a strip club near the Hard Rock.

I thought getting whacked was actually getting killed, but my knowledge of that is strictly Sopranos related.

And I'd be remiss if I didn't correct your spelling of his name. It's Javon.

Culzie and Mark, despite the names, Tryst and Body English are not strip clubs.

I never said that they were, nor did I make any reference to throwing money.

Thanks 'culz.

Contrary to Julie's opinion, I believe that getting "cold cocked", and "getting whacked" (upside the head) are in the same ballpark.

Javon got whacked, and his broken eye socket is proof.

that was a quote from the TMZ website dip ship!!

1.)It's a competition between two mediocre candidates
2.)Rex will start. He's more talented.

-The Big 'R'

I hope your shoulder is O.K. after typing that. Or maybe you strained it throwing the Silk carton around after being pulled down to the bottom of the blog page(didn't you use to be classified as a feature blog? What has this world come to?).
Either way Veggie, here is my conclusion:
1.) If Rex is more talented then 'mediocre', that makes him better than average right? Thanks for finally saying that. I can now live happily ever after.

Why does the Bears QB job always mirror what is going on with our countries President...

Last year, we had a guy under center who half the city was divided over, and either you loved him or you hated him.

This year, we have to choose between two people who nobody really thinks can do the job?

No wonder the Terrorists are Packers Fans!!!!

Keith, I've been comparing Rex to Eli for some time now. Mainly because they were roasted in their playing cities for bad football display. Rex did not lose that SB, our o-line lhelped ose the SB. The dancing TJ and his sideshow Ced helped lose the SB.

Mushin "I won't ever lay out for it" M. helped lose the SB. Ron gimme a lead and I'll lay on the ball helped lose the SB. Rex was only part of the problem, and not even the main part. Think Turner and his conservative playcalling had more to do than anything, hope he gets over it next time.

Sorry Roman, I had no wher else to put these, but it has been a banner day for these FCP favs....I wanted to take a vote.....

Shaq raps on New York stage, takes shots at Kobe
ESPN.com news services

Updated: June 23, 2008, 10:33 PM ET
Four years, two teams and a championship later, Shaquille O'Neal is still ripping Kobe Bryant.

Video on TMZ.com shows the Phoenix Suns center doing a freestyle rap in a nightclub on Sunday night in which he puts down his former Los Angeles Lakers teammate.

"You know how I be," Shaq rapped. "Last week Kobe couldn't do without me."

He also implored the crowd to sing along to his oft-repeated chorus: "Kobe [expletive], tell me how my BUTT tastes."

Smiling and laughing often, O'Neal also sang that Bryant broke up his marriage.

"I'm a horse. Kobe ratted me out," he rapped. "That's why I'm getting divorced. He said Shaq gave a [woman] a mil. I don't do that 'cause my name's Shaquille. I love 'em, I don't leave 'em. I got a vasectomy, now I can't breed 'em."

In 2004, Bryant, while embroiled in a rape investigation, alleged that O'Neal paid up to $1 million in hush money to various women. O'Neal told ESPN then: "This whole situation is ridiculous."

DMX Arrested Again -- What Else Is New?
Posted Jun 24th 2008 8:30AM by TMZ Staff

DMX got arrested ... for the third time since May.

He was popped in Miami yesterday for driving without a valid driver's license, according to the local po-po. Why he would do this after getting collared in Arizona on a suspended license just a month ago is anyone's guess. Of course, he then got nabbed three days later in 'Zona for animal cruelty and felony drug possession charges.

Don Imus roils the racial waters once again
LA TIMES

The chances of Don Imus once again becoming a good radio buddy to various politicians probably got slimmer today.

True, when Imus regained a program last December after offensive remarks he made several months earlier about the Rutgers University women's basketball team led to his exile, several friends from Capitol Hill who had once been his frequent guests -- including John McCain -- helped welcome him back by chatting with him on air.

But since that first flurry of appearances, Imus' new show has not evolved into the regular stop it once was for a bipartisan swath of political bigshots (others included Chris Dodd, Joe Lieberman and John Kerry). And an exchange Imus had today regarding professional football player Adam "Pacman" Jones doesn't seem likely to help restore his sway.

During a report this morning on his nationally syndicated show about Jones, who has been reinstated by the NFL after several scapes with the law led to his suspension during the entire 2007 season, Imus asked, "What color is he?"

When told Jones (who recently requested that that announcers no longer use his nickname when mentioning him) is African American, Imus responded, "Well, there you go. Now we know."

It's a surprise that Imus apparently was clueless

Jewels, I responded to an earlier post. I think both of ours posted on the same day. Anywho, anyone being fair with the Rex/Eli comparisons have to make that one BIG comparison: Eli took out the undefeated Patriots, and Rex lost to the Colts. All of this in the same era. This dude is not Eli....he's just cheese cake.

keith..losing to the superbowl winning colts would actually be fairly equivilent to beating the Pats....i mean...it wasnt like we got blown out, and its not like the Giants WON HANDILY...did they???

Spoken like a true Pit Viper! Well done, PV1.

What would a Viper in NEWYORK clothing be?

ANSWER: NOT A VIPER!!!

Culzie we all know the defenses carried both of their fannies to the Super Bowl. And all they asked was that the QB fight and give them just enough to win. ONE did and thus is a champion. And One did not, and thus GAVE the trophy to his brother! Defense wins championships. But the offense has to do something, and if you want to compare Rex's stats to Eli's in the SB, then go ahead, but don't forget the most important glaring stat of them all - W & L.

TSR - TurnoverSaurusRex is terrible. And Eli is good but not great like folks are making him out to be. His brother is great and so is Brady. Um rooting for anyone but Rex. I don't care. I felt the same way about Benson. I might not be able to predict the next big thing, but I know crap when I see it. Bears have just gotten better by SUBTRACTION.

TSR - TurnoverSaurusRex is terrible. And Eli is good but not great

this is where you drive me nuts...

you just said in the statement before this that They both got carried by GOOD DEFENSES...and 1 was able to Make LESS MISTAKES or A FEW MORE BIG PLAYS than the other....

bbbbut that doesnt add up to = 1 is TERRIBLE and 1 is GOOD

Your logic makes too big of a jump here...i took symbolic logic in College...i can break down your sentance structure to prove the falsity of your statement if you want me too??

Culzie the guy who wins is good. The guy who loses is terrible. Both defenses - great.

ok Keith...since you put it like that...

Culzie, Jim McMahon was good only because he was a winner. Jim Plunkett, Doug Williams and folks like that. They weren't great, but winners and good by default. Good QBs take a situation like that and make something happen. A BAD QB will find a way to mess it up and LOSE.

Nice downgrade to "Good and Bad"...down from "Great and Terrible"

hey Keith...i spent 3 days showing houses to one of these QB's, let me just say that he is far from Great these days...

More like a "drunken bimbo"

Culzie that saddens me. I WISH you could be showing me a home! Tis a shame guess he has to get drunk to remember the glory days.

yeah well...when he was taking a leak off the side of a driveway of a 5M dollar home, I doubt he was thinking to himself....

"I shoulda handed it to Walter instead of the fridge"

keith...come on out, ill show you some homes, and we will dip and drink in m backseat...and whizz off of 5M dollar home driveways too!!
