« Edmonds to Cubs? | Main | Pax to interview Ty Corbin »

Your favorite love-hate relationships

So Jim Edmonds drew a nice round of applause from the Wrigley bleacher fans when he trotted out to center today, despite being the guy they used to love to hate. He also was applauded - with a smattering of boos - at the plate and responded with a single. Who else has fit that role?

Dennis Rodman comes to mind. From hated thug of the Detroit Pistons Bad Boys to beloved rebounding machine during three Bulls championships.

A.J. Pierzynski went from instigator punk with the Twins to an instigator punk with the Sox, whose fans have done a 180 with the catcher.

Blackhawks fans hated Bob Probert when he was scoring goals and beating the hell out of people with the Wings, but they loved him doing the latter with the Blackhawks.

John Starks had a cup of coffee with the Bulls after being one of the most hated players among Bulls fans. Albert Belle was a hated Indian before coming to the South Side.

Who am I missing?

Right now it's Urlacher. I love his play but hate his attitude right now. I think the Bears did enough with the $18m/1yr extension they offered. Brian's just being greedy. He's responsible for the mental part of the defense & his hold out only weakens the team.

there's more I can think of later on, but right now, Muhsin Muhammad comes to mind coming from Carolina to the Bears and then back to Carolina.

How about Kordell Stewart? Nah, he's always been hated. Same goes with Rick Mirer.

Dusty Baker? Hmm

In a sense, maybe Michael Jordan because some people didn't like it when he went to the Wizards.

Isaiah Thomas? Mark Aguirre? I couldn't stand those guys, but they were great NBA players.

Chris Chelios and Jeremy Roenick. Yep, they'd fit in this discussion. Heck, why not Ed Belfour and Dominik Hasek?

Ah well, I'll let others come up with more....

I have a love hate affair with Jim Edmonds.

I have a copy of his jersey from the 2006 World Series. I have another from the 2004 World Series. (Hey Cubs fans, do you know what a World Series jersey looks like? It has this really cool logo... oh... never mind.)

Edmonds patrolling Wrigley's centerfield? I hate it.

Still like the guy, though.

Just not enough that the next time the Cards face the Cubs, I would put the first pitch to Jimmy E. right where his right earhole used to be.

Sorry to see you sink to such depths, Jimmy. Now LaRussa won't go drinking with you anymore.

I would say just most any big name in sports could qualify for this. The athlete starts out in good graces..then comes the $$ and accolades followed by the thought of invincibility and poor personal actions...hell even Michael Jordan, supposedly one of the more well liked Pro Athletes had some negative press on his behaviors... where to begin with the list..you hate them because of who they are as people or if they are not on your side but love them for what they can do for your team. The question is, what do they owe us (the fan) and what should we really judge them on?? Answer: Their performance..that is what they are only paid for...not to be liked

people watch hockey?
the entire cubs baseball team for the past 100 years and a 100 more. the cubs are like a retarded cousin. you love him to death cuz he's family and all but you get sick of all his retarded shinagians, sure he can't help that but still. the cubs just like a retarded cousin are losers, thats a mean thing to say but its true. cubs fan will always pack wrigley field or maybe aquanet field next year. the cubs can be awful and still sell out thats love, just like the a retard cousin.

ya i know your think the cubs will are doing good and all but they'll break our hearts again and again. i was thinkin the only difference is that you know you never expect anything from a retarded cousin but every year we do for the cubbies. i'm done with that. i love them but i hate them too cuz they'll bring your hopes up and break. trust me it will happen.

Ron Harper comes to mind, not because he was a J.O., but he was always a thorn in the side of the early Jordan years Bulls. He played well for the Bulls in his 30's, and I still consider him one of the best FINISHERS ever.

James Edwards

Sandy Alomar Jr.

Floyd Bannister (Sox couldn't hit this guy with a garage door)

Jose Canseco (Hate-Hate)

Kobe woulda been the best example of this ever!!

Too bad

...a boy can dream cant he?

I'm not that type of guy, Roman....definitely don't swing that way.....I'm only wary about that player's talent/motivation to play...because mostly, if they blew their wad in another city...that's usually where their heart is...other than that...I don't care...

Yeah..

This is a little, 'Sailor on Liberty dips out of the closet for a quickie' to me..

I Love Chicago Sports...but I ain't that way...

Ok..i have a new one..

My love hate with the Briggs supporters who hate on Urlacher's baby's momma issues.

Baby mamas bear down on Briggs
Chicago Sun-Times, United States - May 15, 2008
BY STEVE PATTERSON Staff Reporter spatterson@suntimes.com Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs is close to settling a high-profile paternity claim filed ...

So many people to hate / so little time (and room) on this blog to squeeze them all in.

I'll have to take a pass on this one.

Oh ... did I ever mention that I hated some guy named Joe at the Chicago Park District?

I think you missed Ron Cey. I hated all those Dodgers in the 70s. lot of people hated Brian Cox AFTER he came to Chicago so that's backwards. When the 42 year old Farve sign with us in a few years we're gonna love him to death. Tim Raines and Andre Dawson were hated at least by me until they came to Chicago and then they were awesome. Just about any marquee player that signed with the Cubs when they were washed up or close to it is right up there with the hated crew. But the Topper was Dave Kingman. That guy was hated until he came to the Cubs. Got a standing "O" every time he came to the plate. He's strike out 3 times in a row and when he came up a 4th time he getting the crowd up and going. I know that very well because I used to go to Cubbie games on Free-whatever day.

C'mon Culz, you can do better than that. That's too "right now" to even matter. Addressing an article that's in the paper right now is taking the easy way out. Don't forget to say you hate people who you feel is stealing your thunder and attention on just about any blog. Brigg supporters just like myself have a tendency to bring Urlacher into the equation because we like to show that there is a double standard on how the media and fans approach them. Plainly put, the face of your team should not have as many embarrassing episodes as he's had. It's a shame how people give them a pass and are quick to judge another person for being just as human outside the lines. A negative article bring out a whole lot of pious posters and the sound your hear is crickets when a guy does anything positive. No one cares about the charitable sorts. How many blogs were started about Jason Mckie's recent charity bowl to give back to families of soldiers who are fighting for Iraq's freedom? Where is that gateway on the internet like the one you put out for Briggs and his baby mama drama? You're always the red-blooded American defending the reasons we are in Iraq but you're not bringing up what your fellow red-blooded Americans are doing for the cause. But from you I see mainly negative gateways to negative articles. Now that Urlacher is asking for even more money after the team was willing to give him more there are more people lumping him in with the greedy players that are out there. Urlacher stood above everything and everyone and was a "teflon Don" for a very long time no matter what he did. He's been human forever but you wouldn't know it because any negatives were swept under the rug or glossed over because he was Superman. As long as you're wearing a cape and playing in Chicago and adored by the masses you'll see nary a bad article. They only write them after you hang that cape up; see Michael Jordan. That guy did no wrong while he was a BULL and once he retired the articles and opinions became negatives. Some people didn't know he was human until after he retired. History repeating itself a little? Even Jordan got a pass for expecting to be paid more every time his contract was up. Maybe that's it right there? His contract was up and he got more. Where is your negative opinion about Urlacher asking for more money even though he still have 4 long years left on his contract? I guess he'll never be a d-bag in your eyes for doing what regular guys do all the time. Double standard? Serial biasness? Let everyone else be the judge.

GOT ANOTHER ONE..

I love to hate...really really really *****ing Confused People who think Horse Racing is akin to Dog Fighting..

Big Brown treated like a champ at Preakness
By DAN GELSTON – 17 hours ago

BALTIMORE (AP) — Like any true A-lister, he kept the masses waiting for hours.

Then Big Brown made his grand entrance.

Accompanied from the airport by a police escort with sirens flashing, the dazzling colt pulled into the Pimlico Race Course shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday and headed for the prime spot of real estate on the grounds — the corner barn occupied each year by the winner of the Kentucky Derby.

For added flair, two UPS trucks flanked the convoy as it rolled through the gates, Those boxy, brown trucks had never made a delivery quite like this one.

Fans, horsemen, the media — everyone, really — had waited impatiently for the BBOC (Big Brown on Campus). The entire sport has its Triple Crown hopes pinned on the star who claimed the racing stage for himself following a 4 3/4-length victory at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May.

Right now he has the fanfare that goes along with the luxe life of a Derby winner and the odds-on favorite for the Preakness. It will continue as long as he wins Saturday and moves on to the Belmont in three weeks.

Right now, it's good to be the king.

"He gets love all the time," trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. said.

And if BBOC broke his leg they would take him out back and unceremoniously shoot him. He'd be just another dead animal that was used for people's amusement. I'd put horse racing in the same category as the zoo and sea world. Anything held in captivity for whatever good there is has a degree of abuse towards that animal. Animals should be in the wild and people can say and do whatever they like by saying that it's for the greater good that they are in captivity. It's like imminent domain. You can stand in the way of progress and have something taken away from you for the greater good. Hogwash. Nothing should be taken away from anyone, just because. Animals freedom are taken away all the time. We don't have to be carnivores but we are because we were raised that way. I know Roman is a vegan and agree with that assessment.

i get sick hearin all these bleeding hearts about animals this and animals that. you know i don't care and a lot of other people don't care too. you know after big brown wins belmont hes going to to be studded. i don't know about you but that doesn't sound too bad. that horse is worth something like 75 mill and you don't think they treat it like a king. come on!

its the same people like you who make people lose there jobs like that horse slaughter house in dekalb or where ever. i read a 130 people lost there jobs because some people like you b'ed and moaned until it was closed. are you gonna feed those people who lost there jobs? i don't think so.

i don't care that you don't get meat thats good for you but you should serious get check out because i think you got a severe case of PETArdation

BIG BROWN for the triple crown! and if he gets hurts he'll make one fine steak.

William R. Donald said: "Don't forget to say you hate people who you feel are stealing your thunder and attention on just about any blog."

You didn't just hit that nail on the head; you actually drove a railroad spike into block of solid concrete with a 16 pound sledge hammer.

Hey you guys, quit all the hatin' on Big Brown. He's the closest thing to Big Red, and I think that's a big deal, seeing as nobody's three-upped in thirty years. If he wins the Belmont by double digits, at 1-9, maybe this'll be the year for a few more streaks to end, say, maybe, a century long streak.

Damn White Sox can't stay out of the negative news to save their woosy-hitting jock straps.

New love-hate relationship on the horizon.

Chicago White Sox Latin American scouts. From swimmers to scimmers.

Wonder if The Wiz had his hand in any of the pockets?

Well, I can honestly say I do like the line-up change.

Who'd a thunk Carlos Quentin would be my favorite Sox player after the first quarter.

Are you listening Konerko and Dye?

People lose their jobs for various reasons. 130 jobs. Is that all that was lost. Outsourcing has added up to a loss of thousands of job. When are you gonna piss and moan about that? Did you feed anyone when most credit card customer services moved to India? Plenty of American jobs have moved overseas when are you gonna picket that? Pick your arguments and pick your poison. You can keep on not caring because there is enough people like you to go around. And to be honest I don't give a flip about horse racing. You make a big deal about something and then it's over in 3 minutes. Kinda like some of you guy's sex life. How do you watch a program for 3 hours about a 3 minute race? I don't like a lot of sports but I'm not downing people who do like any of those sports. My opinion is what it is and you telling me what you believe haven't changed it nor has it muted me. I eat all types of meat but the reality is that an animal was most likely mistreated to be put it on my table. It's just like knowing that in some 3rd world country that a kid probably died of hunger since I started writing this and that humbles me in the ways of the world. And believe me PETA isn't awarding me for my treatment of animals since I don't like having anything around me that doesn't talk. Since Scooby Doo is only a cartoon I don't have a dog just like him. I'm just rooted in the reality.

Roman: I have a question for you.

Did you delete my reply to William R. Donald about what might have happened if Big Brown had gone down with a fatal injury on the track, or did I just forget to hit the send button? (I'm thinking the latter, because it was a thoroughly inoffensive post)

I'm getting senile in my old age.

Roman responds: Nope, at least not that I remember. I'm getting senile, too. But I am considering stopping the political debate with Culzie. Not sure.

i don't know call me crazy but i think gambling makes horse racing fun. as to picking points and all that i think i make sense. now follow me here.. when people acts like nazis about those those "poor animals" its hurts other people. you see your opinion is causing the problem. its YOUR and people like you whos opinion cost people there jobs. all that ammounts to is some fanciful notion you got up in your head, is that worth somebody's job?. as to that outsourceing and whatever you went on about well that a government thing. you think the government listens to people ha!

anyway
the exacta sure thing
big brown and casino drive

which debate?

Please be quiet, man. 130 jobs don't add up to nothing. That was just plain lame. What happened; your favorite restaurant closed recently? Gambling fun? You got me there. I will wager that you lose more than you win. Even a nazi would be confused by you calling me a nazi. What cost people jobs is the inability of some people to spell correctly on their application. I think that's YOU problem or is it YOURs. And dude I said before that I don't cry about animals I compare situations. I already told you that I'm not a vegan nor am I a card carrying PETA groupie. I simply explained that you can actually lump those things together and it all mean the same. Now, please go and make sense from here on out.

since when is defending horse racing politi....oh yeah..I did make the connection between BBOC and BHO didnt I?

Thanks for responding Roman, and I'll try my best to remember, and reconstruct my reply to William about putting down horses. If I remember correctly it went something like this:

William R. Donald said: "And if BBOC broke his leg they would take him out back and unceremoniously shoot him. He'd be just another dead animal that was used for people's amusement. I'd put horse racing in the same category as the zoo and sea world."

William ... I can sympathize with, and totally understand your feelings about this. I do know where you're coming from.

But I've enjoyed horse racing my entire life, and I have a slightly different take on it. These horses are born and bred to do what they love doing more than anything else, except perhaps for eating, and having sex.

They love to run.

The problem here is that the conditions they run in during a race are not natural, regardless of how much they enjoy the activity.

They're running in a tight field, on a surface that they would normally not run on in nature.

It's kinda like a professional NFL player. The vast majority of them love playing the game, but the fact of the matter is that the average career of an NFL pro is roughly four years. Tearing yourself up on Astro Turf is about the same thing that these horses are subjected to; the only difference being that they don't put down an football player if he tears up both his knees.

A critical injury to a horse that has broken both of his or her front legs is beyond medical reparation, and the kindest thing they can do at that point is to put the poor animal out of it's misery. Believe me when I tell you this: up until the time that horse suffered his fatal injury, it was doing what it loved doing more than almost anything else you can imagine.

These aren't fighting roosters, or a pair of pit bulls thrown into a pit to fight to the death. These animals are treated better than many parents treat their own children. They're well fed, groomed, and in most cases treated like kings and queens.

Animals in zoos don't get the chance to enjoy their freedom, or do what they'd naturally do in the wild, be it simply wandering around aimlessly, or eating anything they could catch and kill.

Race horses get to do what they'd gladly do for free, if actually paying them were involved. They wouldn't hold out for more money, or skip training camp. They want to run!

AND!!! They're loved; not only by their owners, but by their trainers, and jockeys as well. I believe that there isn't a single individual involved in this sport that even remotely enjoys putting down a fallen horse.

Back in the day (that's a pretty tired old phrase by now, huh?) I used to attend claiming races at Sportsman's, and Hawthorn.

In a claiming race, prior to the actual running of the race, anyone could put in a claim on the horse at the stated price in the racing form / Green Sheet.

If the horse won the race, the original owner would get to claim the purse, and the person buying the horse would then have to pay the agreed upon price to purchase the animal.

But if the horse died during the race, he was already the property of the individual who claimed him, and the track announcer would say something like this: "Would the new owner of Willy Nilly please remove his property from the track." (that would be the dead horse that he just bought)

Life's a bitch, and dying isn't any better. But horse racing is a noble sport, and no one involved in it has any interest in seeing either a horse or a jockey succumb to a fatal injury.

I hope you appreciate my point of view, because I surely understand yours, and respect it.

i'm glad you can spell its a wonderful thing but it dont change the fact that your opinion is as flexible as gumby. it stretches form here to there but kind of misses the mark. ok nazi was too far but maybe i should have said fascist?

a little fyi about gambling
people do it because its fun. winnings nice but it dont really matter now does it? win or lose its all a good time at the track.
maybe you should try it and chill out a bit. hey and if you can't stand to see those horses maybe you should check out the greyhounds. atleast they end up in chiense restaurants.
so you can bet on a dog and get some sweet and sour "pork" later.
best of both worlds

paulie mo talli sez: "maybe you should try it and chill out a bit. hey and if you can't stand to see those horses maybe you should check out the greyhounds. at least they end up in Chinese restaurants.

best of both worlds..

It's funny, but Greyhounds also love to run.

The problem that I see with greyhound racing is that these animals aren't treated nearly as well as thoroughbred horses, suffer from hip dysplasia at an early age, and are pretty much s#%t canned after their rather short careers, because they're rarely adopted due to the fact that they make very poor pets.

They're hyper, skittish, medically high maintenance, and have an attention span of about three micro-seconds.

I once owned a Great Dane that had similar traits.

I paid over $500 back in 1980 for this certified, "Championship" pup.

It turned out to be around 160 pounds of rompin', stompin', DUMB!

The poor thing came from championship stock, but was over bred or inbred, and absolutely spun the dial off the, "Stupid-Ometer".

Turned out that her mother was on doggie downers when I saw the litter, and had to be drugged whenever she was entered into a show.

Nevertheless, the apple didn't fall far from the tree.

I gave her away to a guy with a farm after about a year and a half; because even with obedience training, Bonnie would drag you down the street with your face rubbing the pavement regardless of whatever kind of choke collar she was wearing.

Thank God I didn't go back a few days later and buy the remaining male who I would have named Clyde.

The two of them together would have killed me.
