The contradiction that is Ozzie
First of all, the Sox want to point out that Ozzie Guillen's rant Sunday was done before his team's fifth straight loss, not after. Duly noted. But as much as I've enjoyed Ozzie's candor over the years, his words and actions Sunday were contradictory.
On the one hand, he wants his organization to be viewed as elite because it won the World Series in 2005. Then he goes on and on whining about how the Cubs get all the love in this city.
Do you remember Lou Piniella saying things like that about Red Sox Nation? I think Hank Steinbrenner might have, but Ozzie doesn't enhance his team's image by talking about the Cubs.
And then I read that there were blow-up dolls in the Sox clubhouse before the game. That is not the way an elite organization acts. It's bush-league. Stuff for the minors. I've been in a lot of clubhouses and locker rooms, and I've never seen anything close to that. Can you imagine the uproar if that was scene in the lockerrooms for the Red Sox or Yankees.
Look, teams slump. The Sox are slumping. That happens. But handle it with class or you'll be viewed as the second-class team in town. And that's unfortunate.
Comments
He is an embarrassment.
They won the series in spite of Ozzie's idiotic decisions and he has acted like jerk ever since.
The anti-gay rants.
The never ending battles with former players.
His constant whining about the umpires and the media plotting against him.
I really did not think that it was a good idea to drag the World Series trophy down to Venezuela so he could pose for photos with a deranged dictator either.
How about his classless choke signal he gave to the fans at Wrigley in the playoffs?
Last year was a joke and it looks like things can quickly start down that path again.
Someone should finally say enough already and restore some dignity to this team.

Isn't he well on his way to becoming the Latin Mike Ditka?
Posted by: Tommy | May 5, 2008 01:00 PM
He's already Miguel Ditka!!!
Ozzie Ball WON the WORLD SERIES for us in 2005, and he can say or do whatever he pleases. Love the piece of Venezuelan (bleep) who took us to the big game, and brought us the victory. Something Cubs fans cannot say. Go Ozzie!!! You jerk(lol)!!!!!!
Seriously, Ozzie, everyone needs haters, and you have a town full of north side haters. Keep on bringing us victories, and let's retool and do this as Sox fans.
If we had to listen to years of Ditka BS, I will gladly take Ozzie BS, and his World Series trophy he won in Chicago, with the team I root for, over any manager on the North side, and the trophies they won in other cities.
GGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SOX!!!!!!!

I just read the Ozzie rant. Priceless. Best line "the Cubs haven't won anything in like 120 years & they're the best." That narrowly edges his "maybe I should play 2nd base."
That kind of candor is what makes Ozzie perfect for the WSox.
As a fan we aren't asking for Ozzie to do anything drastic. We're just asking him to manage the team like he did in 2005. He created a LOT of lineups that year based on matchups & worked out best. Geoff Blum won a game in the WS for us because Ozzie had the balls to play him that day.
That's what we want & I think if Owens were to come up & Alexei to go down we would see it. Swisher can play 4 positions so that gives Ozzie's a lot of options. Especially when you add Koney to DH & Thome sits.
Owens has a healthy competition down in Charlotte right now with the 30 yr old career mLer Wise. Wise is 8/11 in SB's & Owens is 7/10.

Time to dump this joker. His team has tuned him out, so too should the rest of us.

How bad are the local writers when it took the Toronto media to originally break the story about the "blow-up dolls"...

Guillen is an idiot. He was an idiot when the team -- not him -- won the world series, he has been an embarrassment every season since, and he has turned into a joke and caricature of himself. What kind of example is he setting for kids watching the game? You don't like what someone says about you? Then you call him a poofter. You don't like a radio interview? Then call into the show and curse and scream on the air. You're p -o'd that your team can't put it together this season? Hey, why not insult the fans, the media, the other team in town and anyone who ever gave you the benefit of the doubt? Oh, and then joke about your players putting together some bizarre blow-up doll menagerie. And tonight, as his flaccid team was about to lose another game by 1-0, he was laughing and goofing off in the dugout. Pretty classless all around.
Yeah, he coached one team -- one team -- to the world series, like the great Ditka only got to the Super Bowl once, then he went off the deep end and management did what was necessary by then and got rid of him. Sox management should do the same thing with Guillen.

Every club has slumps. But not a two year slump. The sox are so much like 07 hitless wonders. Ozzie has no clues .Things must change & people must be moved to wake up these under achievers. Walker certainly isn't the whole problem but is part of it. He must be fired now! No excuses for a club with this much supposed talent to not hit for two years. Yes these are mlb players, but why have a hitting coach if he doesn't have a clue on what his job is. Sox can not continue to waste good pitching . It will continue unless someone gets gone! You need to shake things up & Walker needs to be gone! If Ozzie doesn't get it,he can take his act out of Chicago too.

There has been a lot written about this in the blogsphere and Sox fans are outraged. Many of them feel that Ozzie has been given the bum's rush and that Sox fans are (by there own estimation) about 3000 times better than Cubs fans.
You want to know who doesn't agree with these Sox faithful?
Ozzie, that's who.
Does anybody really think he was talking about "Chicago fans" in global terms? Can he really be calling out Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Rush, Fire, Wolves and (you guessed it) Cubs fans about not offering proper homage to the White Sox?? No, that would be preposterous.
Ozzie was calling out Sox fans and that venom was meant for them. He did not mention the Cubs out of ridicule. Ozzie mentioned them out of plain old envy. Cubs fans didn't turn their back on the Sox since their 2005 WS season. How could we? We don't care about the Sox. Never have and never will.
Nope, Ozzie was taking aim at White Sox fans and his fury fell on completely deaf ears.
Posted by: DeLeon1935 | May 5, 2008 09:52 PM
If I recall correctly, when Ozzie was playing he was a loudmouthed hothead, so now what do you expect? Its all fun when the sox are winning but when things go south it's just ugggly.
Posted by: evander | May 5, 2008 10:13 PM
Guillen is taking the Sox for a large salary ride. He is a filthy-mouthed loser, and the Sox should fine someone who can manage and talk without all the swear words.
Posted by: howard | May 5, 2008 10:15 PM
I cannot believe you guys are comparing ozzie guillen to mike ditka. Their names don't even belong in the same sentence. Ditka is one of the most legendary coaches in all of sports. Ozzie is just some fast talkin' loud mouth who nobody cares about. He should concentrate on his own team, not what's happening on the north side... Don't get jealous that we sell out every game, and have loyal fans.
Posted by: mike | May 5, 2008 10:25 PM
Ozzie better do something about his team's hitting soon because he has deadbeat Walker as a hitting coach.
Posted by: pAUL | May 5, 2008 10:51 PM
Yes, Roman, and do you know why there would be an uproar if blow-up dolls were seen in the lockerooms for the Red Sox or Yankees? Because a bunch of reporters would be outraged, having little hissy fits and writing all about it. Of all of the things in this world to get upset about, blow-up dolls in the White Sox clubhouse are way, way down the list.
I get sick of hearing his whining about second class treatment. If he wants his team to be treated better, there is one thing to do: play better. He knows that, but he likes to take the heat off of his players when they slump, and he has to find something to whine about. So he is doing his job, even if we don't like it.
Posted by: JimA | May 5, 2008 11:53 PM
Actually, I think it was the White Sox pitching staff that got the team to the World Series, not the idiotic manager. He has no class whatsoever, and proves it every week or so. What a disgrace, and I don't think the blow-up doll story is going to fade away so quickly.
Reinsdorf has been sticking it to Chicago for a long time, and allowing Guillen to remain as the manager - after all of the embarrassments and inept managing - is par for the Reinsdorf course. I'm sure Reinsdorf chuckles every time things like this happen, and every time the media points out the terrible management and bad behavior that Guillen brings to the table.

Ozzie is Sox baseball. Real Sox fans know this and don't care what he says or does.
Chubs fans wish they had someone with enough inelegance and managerial talent to get them to the World Series, let alone win it.
Ozzie can do what ever he wants and I will support him.
Because it all comes down to rings. We have one and Chub fans will never... EVER... get one.
Posted by: j7baseball | May 6, 2008 06:18 AM
The comparisons to Ditka can stop right here. One of them no longer has the sweet pornstache atop his upper lip. I wonder if Ozzie even had to shave - I'm picturing the hair just falling right off his face during the outburst.
Posted by: Julie B. | May 6, 2008 08:14 AM
Haahaha don't you love how much garbage can come out of the mouth of a Cubs fan....Ozzy is the man!, He is a realist, he has a dream, and if you try to ruin his dream he snaps off. What's wrong with that? He did win the World Series with a team that didn't have to sign some outragious contract to get results (Soriano). And if you are offended by a blow up doll, you have some real issues...Couple days ago no one could say a damn thing about the Sox because they were red hot! First place, best pitching staff, least amount of HR given up. Now they go on a bad slide and all the freakin yahoos come out of the woodworks...
Why don't you guys worry about the slide the Cubs are in and why their most over payed hitter (Soriano) can't hit for Sh_t!!!
What's wrong with you pitching staff??? Hill, Marquis, Wood...Cubs fans always got something bad to say about everyone else except their club, bunch of uppity yuppies!! Get your noses back to ground level instead of up in the clouds!!
Posted by: Mike | May 6, 2008 09:51 AM
Roman, that doesn't make sense. Those two things are not contradictory.
(1) Ozzie WANTS his organization to be viewed as elite due to the World Series championship.
(2) Ozzie is complaining that (1) is not the case, as the Cubs get all the love in Chicago.
How in the world are those contradictory statements? They're perfectly in line with one another.
Furthermore, Ozzie had nothing to do with the blow-up doll.
Posted by: Noles | May 6, 2008 11:45 AM
It is time to replace him before he really embarrasses the White Sox. If he was the face of any other company, he would all ready be gone. Dikta waws a clown and so is Ozzie. Don't tell me we can't find someone else to manage.
Posted by: Dean | May 6, 2008 12:20 PM
The guy is a jerk and a clown. Always has been. He throws out the "Cubs card" because he knows that his Cubs obsessed "fan" base will cheer as if it's fireworks night.
If he's already used the Cubs card it means we're about a week away from him pulling out his overused, worn out race card, blaming his verbal diarrhea on some perceived language barrier and how using idiotic and bigoted statements are acceptable "where he's from"

It's so easy for the men in this blog to defend Ozzie, isn't it? I for one am shocked and offended by what Ozzie did. And the fact that none of the players stepped in to say "that's enough" is equally as scornful. As a female, I am hurt by these recent events and feel like my team has betrayed me. This was the team I grew up with. I feel like a good friend has let me down. I'm still a Sox fan but it's just so very disappointing. Go Sox, even though I'm angry with them.
And there's only so many chances Ozzie can get. Buddy, this is the nail in your coffin. Reinsdorf and Williams are spineless if they don't let him go.

Blow up dolls? This is news? Are you kidding me? Blow up dolls are as offensive to women as dildos are to men. They're not, unless you're some bible banging right winged blowhard. Cover the way the team is playing and leave their harmless games to themselves.

As a woman and a huge sox fan I have this to say, Big deal!! Are my feelings hurt? No, I love my Sox. I dont take this personal. Honestly if it breaks the slump I'm all for it. As any true SOX fan would be. I am all for the thngs Ozzy said in his rant as well. I think it's about time. Honestly he only said the things real SOX fans have been talking about for years. Not saying Ozzy and the SOX can do no wrong they are only human but I think everyone should really get off this petty crap. They play baseball they are not saintly. Big Deal!!!! To many other things going on in the world people.

I read with interest Carol Slezaks column in Tuesdays Sun-Times regarding the blow up dolls in the White Sox locker room, how it was infantile and sexist and shows the White Sox have no respect for women blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. What I find most interesting is that Carol Slezak is a sports writer for a news paper that on a regular basis runs titilating photos of scantily attired women (bikinis, lots of clevage etc.) in the very sports section she writes in yet I have never heard her say or write anything criticizing the Sun Times for that. It appears Carol Slezak doesn't have the courage of her convictions when it comes to standing up to the organization that puts bread on her table. I guess that, now, to me, Carol Slezak joins Jay Marriotti as someone who's cloumn should never, ever be read by anyone, anytime for any reason.

I have been a life long White Sox fan. This is not an easy task when you live in Chicago. The hardest thing to put up with is that Cubs fans and the media are biased, but will not admit this fact. As far as Ozzie goes, that man gave the fans a World Series something I never thought I would live to see. I am a female and I cannot understand what everyone is so upset about. Relax!! It sounds to me like these slump busters and clubhouse antics are not that unusual, the Sox just got caught. I am wondering where all these crack reporters were when the steroid age began. Was it too hard for you to leave your offices and investigate? As far as Ms Slezak stating that the Yankees and Red Sox would not act like this, does the name Roger Clemens ring a bell? I believe he has been tied to steroid use and dating a 15 year girl when he was a 28 year old married man. Where is your moral outrage now? I believe he was both a Red Sox and Yankee player. Also what about the Cubs fans waving the racially insulting posters about their newest player from Japan. He has already said he is offended. Where is your moral outrage now? In today's world of war in Iraq, food prices, gas prices, foreclosures, and a Presidential race that is historical. This story was your paper's headline? I think your bias is showing. So relax! Worry about steroid use that has forever tainted the sport and wonder where you were as a reporter the, Its easy to take cheap shots when a team is down. Maybe you should go across town and ask Sweet Lou about the Yankee's lockeroom when Biily Martin was there. So, I will remain a White Sox fan, and loyal to Ozzie because this too shall pass. One thing I know I got to see a World Series trophy up close, now that is something no living Cubs fan can say.
Laura Miller GO SOX!!!

WOW! 32 posts! I guess, I will keep my mouth shut.....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Well, I will say one thing. Just because Steve stone is suffering from separation axiety, doesn't mean you get a free pass to talk about the Cubs too. I have never wished upon my worst enemy, to be stuck in a booth with Ken Harrelson, however, he might be the one to clean the cobwebs out of Stone's head. Just once, they should pair them up.

Folks...keep it in perspective. The ST writer who's making a huge deal about the blow-up dolls is the same one who wrote a few years back, that is was too hot to play baseball when the temps got over 100.
...that's our Carol!
Roman responds: ESPN SportsCenter and Outside the Lines and other national stories made a big deal about it, too. They're still talking about it today on First Take.

William Anderson, you are so right. Elliott Sexist must be higher on the Sun-Times totem pole than poor Carol, otherwise you'd think she'd be offended by his crap on a daily basis. I say all the time that I don't know how a major market newspaper can ethically print his column with those pictures. Maybe Ms. Slezak is not really as offended by this stuff as she says she is, but when she's got a deadline and writer's block, it suits her well.
