Urlacher should honor his contract
Am I missing something? Why does Brian Urlacher think he deserves a new contract?
Urlacher was a big part of a hugely disappointing defense last season, and the word is now he's skipping voluntary workouts at least in part because he wants a new contract.
I know it's April 7, and it's not a huge deal, but it still strikes me as selfish and not befitting the face of the organization.
Urlacher still has four years left on his deal, and it was a deal that gave him long-term security. So now he's got health issues, is coming off a sub-par season and wants more money?
Ridiculous.

Comments
At least one person ragged on me last year for taking the same position with Briggs...I'll say it again, play out your contract...you signed it.
The good news with this story is that we don't have to hear "let's see if you say the same thing if Urlacher threatens to hold out".

in 06 when he had very few (if any?) sacks, he was disappointing, now , in o7 he got a lot more, yet he is still part of a'big disappointment"? Please let us know what your expectations are. It appears you may have been tainted by 'Jaygerms', from your live chat the other day. Peas.
Roman responds: Yeah, they changed the defense last year and let him blitz and he had five sacks. But if you think he was the impact player he was in '06, you're crazy. He had a good last few games.
And he's also had neck surgery.
Why do you want to give him more money?

And he is going to get it too. I am for players getting paid if they can. Owners do.

Why does Scottie Pippen come to mind when I hear this? You signed a contract honor it and quit whining.
Posted by: Tim Little | April 7, 2008 12:38 PM
Keith you are consistent...
The thing that puzzles me is why do players and people point to owners? Did the players union approve this one-sided system? Of course they did...Why do they players blindly put their faith in this clown Upshaw? He is the reason why this situation exists...pay for unproven rookies and allow owners to have the upper hand for pretty much every situation. People think the NBA owners have it good. They don't even touch the leverage the NFL owners have. In the NBA you can get millions for dogging it or threatening to dog it...in the NFL, you can get dropped like yesterday's news and not get a dime.
Upshaw is the most over-paid person in the league...did I read somewhere he makes tens of millions per year? Only in America...

For Tommy, from an article in the NY Daily News:
"According to the Sports Business Journal, Upshaw, who has been vilified by former players angry over what they call a disability system more interested in denying claims than helping the needy, earned a whopping $6.7 million in the year ending Feb. 28, 2007.
Upshaw, who earned $4.3 million in salary and bonuses from the NFLPA and a $2.4 million bonus through the licensing unit Players Inc., according to the NFLPA's annual report filed with the U.S. Department of Labor, is the highest paid union chief in pro sports."

uRLACHER SHOULD JUST KEEP HIS MONTH CLOSE AND PLAY. Why should the Bears pay him more when he has back condition.
Urlacher is losing my respect and along with a lot of other Bera fans.
Posted by: Paul | April 7, 2008 07:06 PM
well put Keith. It's not like NOT paying him will result in lower ticket prices or concessions. Why let the greaseballs keep it? Give it to someone who is gonna be broke in 10 years anyway. Enjoy it while you can.

Did I read somewhere that B.U. gets $3.5 million this year and next year? Goodness, how can one feel secure with such a pittance of a paycheck? Does the president of the United States still make $250,000 a year? Of course, the president has a private jet and one hell of an expense account, while pro athletes only have free room, board, travel, medical coverage, and multi-million dollar endorsement fees. One's heart bleeds for the poor athletes who work half a year for such a meager sum. Give the poor fellow a new contract and raise the price of admission to Soldier Field. One should keep one's priorities in tact.

Either: It's because he's black. Those black guys are always looking for a handout.
Or: It's because he has a weak vertebra in his neck that could shatter at any moment and he wants to stuff his pockets now, before he lands himself in a wheelchair (complete with a feeding straw).

stuckinwisconain | April 8, 2008 12:18 AM - Dying laughing!!! Thank YOU!!!!
Urlacher is going for his while he can. Bears are making a fortune off the guy. There will be a day soon when Urlacher will be done. But the Bears will continue bathing in riches. I am as loyal as they come - but I have learned the hard way - GET YOURS. The company that you retire from will give you a gold-plated watch for 20 plus years of great loyal back-breaking service. But the CEO will get a GOLDEN PARACHUTE for 2 years of outsourcing jobs.
WIKIPEDIA: A golden parachute is a clause (or several) in an executive's employment contract specifying that they will receive certain significant benefits if their employment is terminated. Sometimes, but not always, these clauses apply only in the event that the company is acquired and the executive's employment is terminated as a result of that acquisition. These benefits may include severance pay, cash bonuses, stock options or a combination of the items. The benefits are designed to reduce perverse incentives.
The use of golden parachutes have caused some investors concern since they don't specify that the executive had to perform successfully to any degree. Their concern is understandable since many golden parachute clauses can promise executive compensation benefits well into the millions. In some high-profile instances, some executives cashed in their golden parachute while under their stewardship their companies lost millions and thousands of workers were laid off as a result.

I do have to admit, that was pretty funny Stuck. I'm assuming you meant "clueless," but just didn't know how to spell it correctly. You also could've had me pointing out the grotesque spelling/grammatical errors routinely committed by the regulars. I also wax.
