how's it so easy for the bears to draft over and replace benson, but they can't do the same for grossman. Benson was a higher pick than grossman, no one cares if he gets benched. how come?
I am not high on this dude, but he seems to be better than Cedric Benson. He doesn't have all around break away speed.Maybe his vision will take him farther than anyone anticepates.
Benson is expensive, he cost the Bears another pick just to send a message and make him compete for a job. Alot of good wide receivers went off the board after Forte. A guy like Benson hurts as instead of an upside receiver, his position has to be tuned up. Costly. Hurts down the road in debt lost at other key positions.

I am extremely excited about Matt Forte. I listened to a lot of the research and commentary on the running back group in this year's draft. And, Forte was one that many projected to have a lot of upside. He is a very deliberate runner, with good vision, excellent cutback ability, and good footwork between the tackles. He has a good second gear in the open field, that helps him seperate away from secondary defenders. Plus, Forte is a very good receiver out of the backfield.
All in all, Cedric Benson's time in Chicago is all but up. And I, for one, could not be more pleased with that.
Next up, Rex Grossman (Hopefully).
Two solid picks thus far. Lets hope Angelo nabs Early Douchet along with another o-lineman with his 3rd round choices. Then a QB in the fourth and the rest of the picks you can use on defense.
I would take the Steelers picks over the Bears in a heartbeat.
Here is one of Forte's rankings before the draft...
"Lacks great timed speed and quickness...Needs to get stronger...A 'tweener who may not have a true pro position...Is not explosive or a big play threat...Won't be a traditional lead blocker...Not real elusive...Has some durability & health concerns."
Great! No need to make a move to get Mendenhall when he was sliding down. he should have given up next years number one in a deal to get a real RB but pick a guy who is no better than the 7th best RB in the draft.
Angelo loves to pick the guys that no one will expect much from so when they suck it softens the blow. "Blow" being the key word here. Nice to pass on Brian Brohm and let him go to the Packers Jerry!
Typical Angelo/Smith draft picks. All he needs to do now is draft some unknown injured defensive lineman with the 3rd pick.
Too small. Must be Hester's replacement-have to think about that you know.. My philosophy is that if you take o'lineman in the first round, then you better get the whole line. One lineman does not make a difference.
Another surprise(Hitman you'll like this) as long as I have my future glasses on. Williams is way too tall for Rex, Obviously Orton will be the starting QB. You just can't overlook that one.
Hey fan 4 life I'm glad you can see into the future. Who the heck are you to decide who will be what, you sound stupid. They did not draft what you think they should have so get over it, you and Philtration had to look hard to find a negative report to justify your whining. When Forte starts and goes for 1,200 yards or so you will be eating crow. You can't judge a draft by what every publication says. If you watched the draft and really did any research they were contradicting themselves and falling over each other over analyzing the whole thing. If you would notice the mocks were all screwed up, Mendenhall would have been nice but the pressure would have been immense and distracting, very few hometown players do well at home once again we will see that USC game was so out of hand for the Illini those yards are deceptive, if you watched the game you would know what I'm saying.
This guy should be an upgrade over Benson (it would be hard not to be),but he was running against Conference USA, which not the SEC, Big Ten or Pac 10. Watch and see if that Brohmn pick by the Packers comes back to haunt the Bears.
Can you imagine? This guy comes in and becomes the Bears worst nightmare like Favre was before Lovie got there? If Trex is QB this year, he'll need a Stepladder to be able to see over Williams who's 6'6".
Surely culzie..you can understand the concern...you taut RB's with your eyes crossed...a RB could have 1,200 yards and you'd dump him for a RB who gains 600 if it means your 'fantasy' team would get more points...I'll call it culzie's "Keys to Canton"...
I mean really...The Bears are replacing "your" boy with another one of "your" boys...chucking spaghetti up against a wall is one method, I guess... you would fit right in at Halas Hall ..youre hired!
Pittsburgh and KC made a mockery of the Bears organization yesterday..
Chris Williams is the next Stan Thomas and Forte is an upgrade over Benson...ok...time for round 3
How is it that Philtration makes the Sunday Drive and I don't? What the H-E-double-hockey-sticks!!! The shenanigans at this paper!!! (that was a shout out to you of course, Seedster)
Looks like desperation picks from halas hall. O line but not best player on o line, just a left tackle. Says a lot about the hole they are in.
Also forte pick isn't just a stomp on the benson bust, but also the garret wolfe experiment. this is safe cautious jerry, trying to bail out the wasted picks of "know better than them" jerry that continually over reached for players like wolfe, bradley, olowakandi, and other angelo discoveries that will never play in the nfl. Now he goes for journeyman to cover for his past mistakes, at this rate, in two or three years the bears may improve to mediocre, no wonder urlacher and briggs want out.
Besides, thought the draft geniuses said it took 2 or 3 years to evaluate how good a teams draft is, angelo is doing it for wolfe in just one year. Guess he is just a shrewd after the fact evaluator of his past picks.
I love these fans who basically pick a new jersey to root for every year.
Seriously people..Pick a team...1 team and stick with them.
You cant be a Bears Fan and a Cowboys fan or a Raiders fan or a Steeler Lover.....sorry...folks!
That doesnt even touch those of you who didnt grow up Bears Fans...you know who you are.
There will be a 'Pit Vipers' Meeting soon to discuss some of this stuff...not sure where it will be, and who will be invited...I just know that if you are wearing a Steelers Mendenhal Jersey...you cant come.
Pit Vipers Unite! Being a true Pit Viper means you can gripe all you want, but in the end all that matters is Da Bears. Got it? No jerseys of any kind unless they are blue and orange (and Illini jerseys don't count), no dual alliances, none of that. Pit Vipers are Bears fans for life, no matter what. No matter where you live, no matter whom gets gets drafted, sucky QB, you take it all like a Viper. Exclusivity is a must, and some of you are on the edge. Plenty of others would gladly take your seat on the Wagon.
This draft is teh best in many years. We are addressing all the Bears needs with quality, smart, and great character guys (DT picked on talent and updside alone). For me, QB is a project no matter where you pick them. Take Johnson or Dixon this round or next and let them get groomed if and when Grossman fails. Guys, we needed depth at DT and Safety and we got it. We needed a LT, RB, and WR and we got it. On like last year, when Olsen was a steal, the picks of Bazuin, Okow, and Wolfe were reaches. This is a greta needs draft.
BEARS ARE STUPID THEY COULD HAVE TRADED UP FROM THE SECOND ROUND AND GOT MENDENHALL YET THEY SAT THERE. I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY THEY DIDNT MAKE A MOVE TO GET HIM THEY HAVE ABOUT 3 OR 4 EXSTRA PICKS AND KNOW ONE THEY TOOK ON THE SECOND DAY IS JAW DROPPING. THIS IS WHY THEY ARE STILL A SOSO TEAM, THE LACK OF BIG MOVES
I root for the Bears every year / all year, and I never want to see them lose .... unless the season is already shot, and losing a meaningless game in December translates into a higher draft pick, (which Angelo will eventually blow anyway).
That said; The next quality running back that J.A. selects will be his first.
For all the up front money and cap space that Benson has cost the Bears; at the end of the day, (I really hate using that tired phrase) they will have little if anything to show for their investment. His trade value is less than zilch. They could get more for their water boy.
At this position I've seen Rashan, Enis, Benson, and Wolf.
And at the QB position, I've seen Cade, Mirer, Quinn, Burress, Krenzel, Stewart, Grossman, and Orton, in no particular order.
All in all ... I've seen enough.
Put them all together, and I'd trade the entire bunch for a Happy Meal, and a shot of vodka.
This kid, Forte, might be worth a look, but if past is precedence, I wouldn't get too excited.
Sayers, and Payton are in the rear view mirror, and the road ahead doesn't look all that promising.
What I do know is that in the NFL, "Worst to First" is always a possibility, si in that regard, I hold out a smidgen of hope for the upcoming season.
Without that hope, true Bears fans like myself would have no reason to live.
Williams, Forte, and Bennett are the only players worth anything from this draft. Angelo has lost all crediblity in my point with passing on players like Anthony Collins OT Kanas who could develope into a solid starting RT. Not trading up day one when Mendenhall and Henne where dropping. Passing on John David Booty and just about all other Qb. This draft may set the francise back anther 5 years. Here is a hint Angelo REX GROSSMAN SUCKS, KYLE ORTON SUCKS, YOU NEED A QUARTERBACK!!!!!!!!!STOP DRAFTING DEFENCE!!!!!STOP PLAYING IT SAFE!!!!!!MAKE SOME MOVES!!!!!!!Too bad lets try and look forward to the next draft when the bears go 0-16 and get the first pick. Tim teebow will look nice in a bear uniform but who am I kidding we will probalby draft someone like....I don't know but he will be a bust.
Hey Benson, don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out. Maybe someday, when you're old and grey, you'll look back at the opportunity that you had, one that many would kill for and realize that you blew it. Sure you're rich (from the massive signing bonus), but you won't even be a blip in the history of the NFL and the Bears.
well, a vast upgrade over Cedric the NON Entertainer. Mr. Forte seems to understand the basic concept of the running back position which is you try to ELUDE a tackle, by the use of a stutterstep, change of direction and other basic tools of a normal running back.
I'd prefer Mendenhall though, I wonder what it would have taken to trade up.
Look for the Bears to draft Safety Nate Lyles pf Virginia (Hubbard) in the 7th round to make up for not drafting another Hubbard player Michael Hayden (Illinois). Hayden intercepted Rex Grossman's pass in the Super Bowl XLI for a TD and put the nail in the Bears coffin.
As long as we're going with a Michigan State theme here today, I'd like to suggest RB's Jehuu Caulcrick or Javon Ringer. These guys rock. Then we can really say adios to Ced, which is clearly the direction we're going - a good thing.
Ok, his college highlights look nice. You look at Benson's college highlights or any other NFL players' who was drafted and you'll probably be impressed too. It's nice to see such optimism from Bears fans but in reality, regardless what the tape shows, or what the scouts say, you don't know what you're going to receive from any drafted player.
Benson's not as horrific a player as some of you might believe. You look at 2006 and he had the same average as TJ. In 2007 he's running behind a one armed Ruben Brown, Fred Miller w/ a busted ankle and whatever backup OL guy came in. It doesn't occur to anyone that if all of our QBs and RBs faltered for most of the season, that maybe the run blocking/pass blocking (i.e. the O-line) is partly to blame?
You guys say your bears fans, while prejudging this years draft, If you were real bear fans then you would have a little faith. With our o-lineman picks rex could actually have time to throw the ball and from the looks of forte behind a revamped line we should have a good running attack and receivers will actually have time to run routes. So to all you Jay Mariotti type of fans, the 06-07 season was not that long ago so with a healthy defense and the new additions on offense and not to forget #23 hester, Looks like we are back on track. HAVE A LITTLE FAITH SO CALLED BEAR FANS.
great that we got williams in the first...nice longterm lt. however, when mendenhall started slipping they should have traded their 2nd and 3rd round picks to move up and grab him. for god's sake there were five trades between the 14th pick and the 23rd, when he got drafted...so teams were listening and moving. everyone in IL wanted the hometown boy and jerry blew it by not making moves.
why would we trade DOWN twice and get more picks when we already had more than almost every other team? they should have packaged some together to make a real move and come out of the first round with williams and mendenhall. we still had plenty more pics to work with.
great, now we have TOO MANY rookies and half of them won't even make the team. even though jerry's good at late picks, how many of the FIVE 7th round pics are going to make any difference or even make the team. i would have rather come away with less players but quality players that will make the team and have an immediate impact.
So djssr... I am whining? It is not my fault that you do not know anything about football.
Yesterday I said that Angelo can now draft an injured D lineman in the 3rd round and what did he do?
He picks DT Marcus Harrison who has had injury issues with a torn left ACL last spring and another knee injury in 2006.
On top of that he was pulled over for speeding and found to be in position of Ecstasy and two cigars that tested positive for marijuana. He was charged with felony possession of drugs for the arrest last summer and is working his way through that.
What happened to the O line being the number one priority?
Angelo also drafted WR Earl Bennett who is just average athletically , not very fast and could have trouble separating from pro corners while passing on several receivers who are better. He cannot jump very well and is he is not elusive. That is it?
After picking three defensive players in a row he then picks a TE. The one position on offense that did not need any help.
Brian Brohm and Limas Sweed were not good enough to draft but these 5th round at best stiffs are the answer? Pathetic.
Spin this how ever you want but unless Williams and Forte become pro bowlers then this draft looks like a bust right now.
Wayne 23, I officially proclaim you a Pit Viper. We're a demented and sad little club, but we could use a guy like you. Your official initiation is me correcting your grammar - it's "you're." Welcome to the Jungle.
secondly..you have to see the highlight within the highlight Mike.
Sure, I could make a neat hi light tape of Benson or anyone, but, when you have an eye for talent, there is something just about the way an athlete moves, that electrifys the eyes.
You have to just have hope. As far as I'm concerned, we scored some studs, and we should be headed back to super bowl.
The draft went pretty much what I expected and I liked it for the Bears overall. Matt Forte does look a lot like Ryan Grant of Green Bay, but sure hope he produces like Grant because he was drafted at a much higher draft round. I actually liked Stewart from Oregon better, but he went really quick in the 1st round. This type of draft can only be graded properly after 2 years or so, but I'm satisfied overall. Just wished that they drafted more O-Linemen.
Now to the Mendenhall lovers out there... he slipped in the 1st round for a reason. And the Steelers no longer have Faneca and still have Willie Parker I think. Should be interesting to see how he'll do. Good luck, Rashard!
Julie dictates: "Pit Vipers Unite! Plenty of others would gladly take your seat on the Wagon."
This would mean that we should have no interest in any other NFL games played throughout the season, except for those that might havew an effect on the Bears and their playoff possibilities.
I beg to differ.
I like watching as many NFL games as I can squeeze into my limited TV viewing schedule, and I'm usually rooting for one team to beat the other. Without a rooting interest, there would be no reason whatsoever to even bother watching Dallas play Washington, or New England line up against Indy.
Are you saying that those games are of no interest, or that if you take the time to watch them, you're not pulling for one team to beat the other, whether it's because you hate the coach, the city, or a particular player?
I'll agree that da Bears are priority #1, but there's a lot of football to be played, and it would be a rather boring season if Bears games were the only ones I bothered watching.
Again: Without at least a tepid rooting interest, why bother watching any other games at all?
Besides captain E-Love.. Marcus Harrison....The Bears drafted a poor man's to a no-man's version at every position...dumb
drafting high on the medical charts is pretty special...dumb
trading down to solidify the last 10 picks in the seventh round is pretty indicative of an idiots reasoning, too...dumb
why stop there, tho
They should have just traded all the way out of the draft...smart
All my value guys went to real organizations with real football guys running the show...imagine that...smart
If it wasn't for the Cardinals organization...The "Charter Franchise" of the NFL would be...well..they are the laughing stock....Cards are expected to lose
She didnt say you cant watch other games renob, she said you cant go waiving & wearing around other TEAMS JERSEYS!!!
It's not that hard of a concept to get...little did we realize that 'MarkSez' would find the most benign and innocuous comment to take up contention with.
Its actually amazing to me, that you were able to fabricate an entire argument about watching other games, that was never even remotely present in PVJB's comments. This is the kind of world we are living in now. where People like MarkSez can just put words in someones mouth and then create a whole reality based on those made up words.
UNREAL..
also..for the record..I now like that you repost our entire posts in their entirety, because it gives me a chance to read mystuff again.

The Bears went safe with their two picks. If it was me, I'm taking Mendenhall with their number 1 pick and Brohm with their second.
Both Williams and Forte are serviceable, but neither of them have all-pro ability.

Without that hope, true Bears fans like myself would have no reason to live.
Da Bears!!!

I give the Bears draft a (B-) Though, it's too bad they couldn't draft an offensive coordinator and an offensive identity.

great that we got williams in the first...nice longterm lt. however, when mendenhall started slipping they should have traded their 2nd and 3rd round picks to move up and grab him. for god's sake there were five trades between the 14th pick and the 23rd, when he got drafted...so teams were listening and moving. everyone in IL wanted the hometown boy and jerry blew it by not making moves.
why would we trade DOWN twice and get more picks when we already had more than almost every other team? they should have packaged some together to make a real move and come out of the first round with williams and mendenhall. we still had plenty more pics to work with.
great, now we have TOO MANY rookies and half of them won't even make the team. even though jerry's good at late picks, how many of the FIVE 7th round pics are going to make any difference or even make the team. i would have rather come away with less players but quality players that will make the team and have an immediate impact.
mommy make it stop.....

Awesome mission statement..
secondly..you have to see the highlight within the highlight Mike.
Sure, I could make a neat hi light tape of Benson or anyone, but, when you have an eye for talent, there is something just about the way an athlete moves, that electrifys the eyes.
You have to just have hope. As far as I'm concerned, we scored some studs, and we should be headed back to super bowl.
BEARS ME!

I can't believe I saw the Bears pass up John David Booty twice. Man, that was stupid.

Wrong. I have a satellite dish so I can watch every game. Don't mess with the Vipress.
Posted by: Pit Vipress Julie B. | April 28, 2008 09:07 AM
