Let the Bulls playoff battle begin...
The Blogfather is off on vacation this week (feel free to guess where he went in the comments section) which means I’ll be steering the ship until he returns. Luckily Roman’s absence coincides perfectly with my spring break, so while some college kids are doing things they’ll immediately regret in Cancun, I’ll be desperately trying to make sure Hitman doesn't sneak any expletives past the goalie. Both options are equally fun and dangerous.
Something that isn’t fun: watching the Bulls!
I’m sure no one saw it because there was far better basketball going on elsewhere, but yesterday’s beat down at the hands of the mighty Spurs was even more depressing because everyone knew it was coming. No way was Tim Duncan going to lose his fifth straight to a team as bad as these Bulls.
And jeez are the Bulls bad, 27-41 to be exact, good enough to be two games out of the final playoff spot in the horrid Eastern Conference. This team’s inconsistency has been maddening (I mean, how can you not win three straight games all season?), and it’s perpetuated by Jim Boylan’s ability to screw up the rather easy task of coaching an NBA game. Granted, the Bulls got into this funk when Skiles was still around, but Boylan’s lack of a consistent rotation has the players guessing when they’ll play and at what position.
Wondering why the Bulls got smoked 33-14 in the second quarter last night? Maybe it’s because Boylan elected go to with a guard combination of Thabo and Larry Hughes. Those two guys are fine when paired with Gordon or Hinrich, but when they’re together, there is no one to handle the ball or decide where the first pass should go. Boylan has been doing that stuff all season, whether it’s playing Deng and Nocioni together when it’s clear both are only small forwards, or going with the four guard lineup like he did in the fourth quarter against New Jersey.
The most frustrating part of the entire operation is how Tyrus Thomas has been completely yanked around all season. As Blog-a-Bull pointed out, if you are going to go through a season as bad as this one, you may as well try to figure out if Tyrus can play. It’s like Boylan (or Skiles, for that matter) has no idea how to communicate with anyone who didn’t come out of Duke or Kansas. Pulling Tyrus every time he makes a mistake isn’t the way to motivate him. It only makes him want to say ‘screw you’ to a coaching staff that surely rides him harder than anyone else. Thomas has certainly had his share of monster games a Bull (who could forget this or this?), but a single screw up costs his tons of minutes which is killing his development.
All this and the Bulls are still in a dogfight to make the playoffs. Eastern Conference basketball, what else can you say? Here’s something sad: the Bulls next five games are against Indiana, Philadelphia, Milwaukee and two against Atlanta, and I have zero confidence they can even finish 3-2.
More importantly, when did the Bulls turn into the Bears?

Comments
Lets hope it's a battle they lose. They should be a 10th seed in the NCAAs instead of the NBA Playoffs. They are horrible!

If Paxon was serious about making a playoff run they wouldn't have given the head coaching gig to Boylan. This guy is in so over his head right now its unbelievable. You know that Tony Parker is going to run all over the place, how can you not be prepared for that? The one thing that I can't tolerate as a fan is s soft team. This is one of the softest teams I have ever been witness to. Keep Thabo and Noah and blow up the whole team. If they keep Boylan because they are to cheap to pay someone else than I am gone.

To be honest R'OD I kept flipping back and forth between NCAA games and the Bulls only because knowing the Bulls were going to take a beat down I was interested in how many minutes Tyrus was going to play. Now here's the thing that really pisses me off...Tyrus was yanked after commiting his second foul BUT I felt both fouls could be over looked because they were hustle fouls, infact I thought the first one should have been a no call he went straight up for that rebound and most veteran players would not have been called for a foul on that play. Then he wasn't returned to the game until almost half way through the 4th quarter long after the outcome had been decided. Then Boylan says that Hinrich and Duhon being out opened up minutes at the guard position for other players caught in the guard log-jam...then why didn't Nichols play until there was only 3 minutes and 46 seconds left in the game? To that point Boylan had used a 3 guard rotation with Gordon, Hughes and Thabo. Why didn't Brown play at all? Boylan is a clueless joke. Skiles at least had the excuse of being undermined by Ben Wallace and trade rumors. Boylan was given the chance to prove he was head coaching material and has failed miserably. It makes one wonder if Aldridge would have been "developed" in the same manor Tyrus has been if he had actually came to Chicago. Lament all you want about draft choice decisions but without proprer coaching the best draft prospect can lanquish in obscurity.

I'm guessing somewhere exotic......
Des Moines?

I'll guess Roman went to Arizona ...and the Bulls are expletives
Ricky responds: Blast, he's done it again!

Richard....you just solidified your spot in the Vipers!!!
Posted by: bculz | March 21, 2008 11:23 AM
Oh..and tell Roman to put 500 on Kansas State for me!!!
Posted by: bculz | March 21, 2008 11:26 AM
So Ricky's steering the ship.
I can just hear Captain Roman (Hazelwood) Modrowski upon his return:
"I said rum and coke on the rocks, not RUN THE BOAT ON THE ROCKS!"

Boylan is in over his head, and from everything I've seen so far, there's not much chance that he'll be around next year. He's had ample opportunity to straighten out this mess, and put his stamp on the team, and he's failed miserably.
You're right about Thomas. I see a lot of raw talent in this kid, and neither Skiles or Boylan have been smart enough to harness it. He'll probablly be shipped out to another team, and have a Hall Of Fame career.

Well, nice to get a chance to comment about the San Antonio debacle. Ben Gordon 39 minutes, 3 assists. Does everyone now agree that Gordon is not a point guard in any way shape or form? And that he plays matador defense, we need to get him a cape. Early in the year, I watched Hinrich slam the scorers table in anger because of the no dee and expecting the rest of the team to cover up Gordon. It isn't possible. I think he was a +/- negative 18 last night. What is wrong with Boylan and Paxson? One definition of insanity is to do something over and over expecting a different result after getting the same result for the first 30 times. Gordon has cost us 15 games at least and if you look, that is why we have the bad defensive stats, and with 15 more wins, "we are who we thought we were" as Dennis Green once famously said. It is that simple.

Idle thoughts on a Friday that is Good:
What I like about the Bulls is...
Does anyone else find it odd that Tiger Woods has bigger biceps than most of the Bulls players?
Than most of the Cubs?
I still say that Ted Lilly is using eyeliner.
It looks like the Bulls will top my prediction of 30 wins for the season. They should be proud!
Lou Piniella's first tantrum over lackadaisical Cubs play is going to happen before the end of April.
Hitman will use another expletive and slip it by ROD before the end of March.
Boylan IS in over his head, but so is Paxson.
I think Brian Anderson deserves a shot to stick on the Sox's opening day roster. It would be nice to have someone in the outfield who can catch the ball.

"Bonehead" Boylan is the most useless coach that I have ever witnessed. "Bambi" Gordon is a "Mope a Dope" as a human being and a team cancer as a player.
Why does he get his "guaranteed" minutes no matter how pathetic is effort in every phase of the game except for chucking up bad shots. If you follow him around the court he gives up on every single play offense and defense that does not involve him shooting the ball.
He can barely stay on his feet for more than 2 possessions never mind play point guard. He is absolute garbage as a player and as a personality.
I agree that Thabo and Noah are the only players worth watching. Everybody else should be shopped this summer. Boylan will not be back, Gordon should not be back. Hinrich is either our 3rd guard or gone. Even Deng is expendable, he is at best a third tier player, very unathletic for a young guy, he can't finish around the rim, looks old and plays like an old guy. Maybe, Thabo should be our starting small forward. He sure does remind me of Pippen in his NBA infancy.
As for Thomas, I fear that he is just another Knuckleheaded bust. But I would start him at the 3 for the rest of the season, and bring Deng off the bench. But we can't do this because we are still in contention for the right to get our asses kicked by the Celtics, what a joke.
Lastly, Gooden is not a center, but Bonehead in his desire to be undersized a every position continues to give him more and more minutes at center at the expense of Noah, and Gray.

Boylan, as I have been saying since he took over is a sick joke. Instead of finishing the season with some dignity and finding out if the Bulls have a nucleus of good young players, he is literally doing long term damage to the players, the Team and most certainly the Fans. How can a guy who has been in coaching so long be so bad? He can't even recognize the most simple match-ups problems for other Teams and absolutely plays the wrong players in the wrong position at the wrong time. Drew Gooden, the journeyman retread who is a defensive liability on Tim Duncan? How about Noah instead? Noah is long, quick, high energy and couldn't stop Duncan but would have harassed him all night. Noah on Oberto at center? How about starting Gray, who could have backed down Oberto all night and forced the Spurs to double HIM. Make Bruce Bowen chase Tyrus Thomas all night. Force the Spurs to play defense. Have Thabo beat on Parker which is the only wany to stop him. Switch Thomas to Ginobli when he comes in. Make Findlay guard Deng at the two. In short do SOMETHING rather than start two marginal players(Gooden,Hughes) who were traded AWAY from a contender because they suck, give them major minutes and have them take 45% of the shots. I'm starting to believe Boylan thinks his role as coach is to make sure the Bulls lose each game. Until he is gone and real coach is in place no matter who the players are, the Bulls are doomed to be bottom-feeders. In fact I'd rather see them forfeit the rest of their games instead of enduring this torture any longer.

I can't expletiving believe it! Villanova? Hey Mark, what's in my future? Fame, fortune? Blog-master for a day?
Posted by: Julie B. | March 22, 2008 07:38 AM
It's not so much a "playoff battle" anymore; more like a "chase for the cut", or a "chase to make to cut", or my personal favorite, "wait for the cut". Ironically enought, it always comes down to the fans for Chicago. Boylan can afford to mallot Tyrus on the skull every time he trips over his foot because he knows that the fans don't mind failure that much. Besides, if Tyrus plays too good, that might get the fans to want more from their team.
Roman went to Jamaica last time so I'm guessing he'll be in the Rio area now.
Posted by: Keylan | March 22, 2008 10:17 AM
In addition to a blog about the Bull's "playoff battle", I think next year you should do a topic about the "playoff battle" for the play-in game in the NCAA tournament.
Yes...let's see if the Bulls can overcome those juggernaut Nets and Hawks and lose in the first round of the playoffs!

Julie axes me: " Hey Mark, what's in my future? Fame, fortune? Blog-master for a day?"
After gazing into my crystal ball, and reading the tea leaves, all I can say is that your prospects look somewhat less than promising. I'd be lowering my sights if I were you.
How does "Spell Checker For A Day" sound?

Paxson has no one to blame but himself. Pax rewarded the me-first, shoot-first, and DEFENSE-LAST Gordon a 50-million contract. Even BG didn’t accept the vastly over-paid contract, the news that BG was offered that much money likely affect the motivation of other players wanting to play defense. This just shows how lack of intelligence Pax is. BG is a half court player (he puts all his effort on the offensive end only and even his offense is so one-dimensional). You can’t offer a two-way player’s money to a one-way player and still expect that the other players will continuously play hard on defense. For example, it seems Deng is now playing somewhat like BG – looking for his own shots on the offensive end and coasting on the defensive end to try to save as much energy as possible for his offense. I don’t blame Deng because he may think I played so hard at both ends of the court last season and I guarded everyone at my position (including many all stars - LBJ, Butler, Pierce, R.J., J Howard etc.), while BG always got whatever the easiest defensive assignment and somehow he is entitled to have Hinrich (or someone else) guard his man… but I only got an offer similar to BG…I learn you get paid for scoring more and I want Hinrich to guard LBJ etc. for me… why should I play hard on defense???
If other Bulls had a brief lapse on defense, they got pulled, whereas BG can have defense lapses the whole game and whole season without having his min cut. The other Bulls players had put great effort on defense in the past, despite seeing how much BG has been getting away with poor defense. But they are finally tired of this type of double standard. You can’t blame them (of course you can, but it won’t work) and you cannot motivate other Bulls to play hard on defense forever, when one player gets a free pass on defense. Defense is contagious, so is Not-Play-Defense!!!

I'm already spell-checker every day. That's all ya got?
Posted by: Julie B. | March 22, 2008 07:44 PM
I agree that they are screwing around with Tyrus Thomas.
Why not play him as many minutes as he can take? What do they really have to lose at this point?
Posted by: Philtration | March 22, 2008 11:54 PM
Julie sez: "I'm already spell-checker every day. That's all ya got?"
That all depends on what you want.

While reading an article about the Mavericks losing to the Spurs, the injury to Nowitski, and the possibility that they might not make the playoffs, a light bulb went off in my head.
This is all a big joke.
With a team like Dallas sitting at 9 games above 500 with a 44 / 26 record, possibly being left out while a team like our horse-bleep Bulls are still in contention, I think I'm about to seriously lower my interest level in the NBA.
I long ago lost interest in the NHL when they went to a playoff formula that pretty much allowed every team in the league to compete in the "post season" competition.

wait a minute..
my post was suppose to say..
That doessnt surprise me.
either edit the whole thing out, or let it ride, but dont try to play god with with my words young Ricker.

Bculz accuses Rickey of editing his post, when it's more than obvious that this was not the case.
His supposed (and misspelled) quote, "That doessnt surprise me."
might be plausible except for the fact that the "M" in the original post was capitalized, indicating that this single two letter word was all that was there to begin with.
Methinks the blogger doth protest too much.

I gotta question? Since Noce said it is not anyone's fault, can I please have my money for the tickets I paid for as a birthday present to myself? They sucked and lost, it was not my fault, I want my money back. And probably the rest of the posters here as well.
Noce cut me a check out of your 38 mil. Or Kirk. TT. Ben. Anyone?
Thought so, they get paid to play. I pay for them to play, so I blame them when they suck, OR refund me my money, and I won't say a word. (don't get me for grammar Julie)

Chuck;
I feel your pain.
It's like paying $5,000 for a ring side seat to a heavyweight boxing match, and then watching the fight end after a 34 second KO.
The head on your beer is still bubbling, but it's already over with.
You feel cheated.
The Bulls have cheated their fans all season long.
They quit on Skiles, and they never even showed up to work for Boyle.
