Bye bye Brett

So he's gone. What's your most vivid memory of Brett Favre?

He's one of the greatest ever. No question.

But as his career wound down, I did lose some respect for him. I didn't like him giving Michael Strahan that sack record by sliding into his feet. I didn't like the 29-interception season a couple of years ago, but man did he bounce back this past season.

The guy's durability and excellence were among the best ever.

He dominated the Bears until Lovie Smith arrived, so it's not like the Bears should feel relief he's gone.

Not relief, just respect.

By the way, our poll question today is who becomes the best QB in the NFC North? Go here to vote: http://www.suntimes.com/sports/index.html

Comments

Im a die hard bears fan and I always hated the packers but ive always respected Brett Favre. I hated when he played against the bears but admired his guts and play. He will go down as the best QB of our generation and probably the best ever. Im happy to say that I was at his last game at solder field and I nearly froze but it was worth it to see him play at least once.
All bears fans should not hate him and admire his type of play. I have nothing but respect for that man as should all football fans.

Wellll..I guess if Vivid was going to give me a memory of Brett Favre... I'd want it in a gay porn

Roman responds: You made me go back and check to see if I capitalized vivid. Perv.

My FAVORITE MEMORY is of Brett Favre and the Packers kicking CHicago's butt last year before they went on to LOSE the Suberbowl. But my most vivid memory turned out to be more premonitory: December 23, 2007. I went to the game with my parents- both Bear fans. I felt like that might be the last game he played at Soldier's Field and was hoping it would be his best game at Soldier's Field. But I clearly remember looking at my dad and with numb lips saying, " He just doesn't look himself, he looks a little flat..." Then came the one and only touchdown and it looked like he was getting excited like the Brett I was used to watching; but it went as fast as it came.
I had the same feeling with the Giants game, although he looked a little more excited to be there. However,as the game went on, I just had that feeling that his young soul wasn't so young anymore and his age was catching up to him. And I did cry after the game, because they lost and because I felt sad that he wouldn't get to retire the way I wanted him to. Yes, I wanted him to come back, but this past season- that was their year if they were going to take it all with him as quarterback.
Thankfully, he has given all of us Packer fans, great memories of his genuine enthusiasm for the game, outstanding comebacks, and brought back respect for players who play for the love of the game and not the money. When he went out on the field, you couldn't help but feel excited to watch him play- even if you hated the Packers as a team- he made you forget that you hated them. He had fun out there on the field and you could tell and you wanted him to win.
I feel he picked an appropriate time to retire; he brought the team farther last season than anyone thought. That's an accomplishment worthy of hanging up his helmet and knowing it's time to say good-bye. I get choked up thinking about it and reading all the press releases today- but I know it's a good thing. I would never wanted him to leave as a 'washed up ' quarterback and have people tell me he should have retired last year or two years ago.
I can only hope there will be more young QB's out there with his talent, his attitude, dedication, and genuine love of the game. I would hate to think there is only one of him, but would, as a Packer fan for the past 25 years, covet that if he was.

And you're right Roman, Bear fans should not breathe a sigh of relief just yet- just because #4 is gone, doesn't mean we're done with you.

TO Brett Favre-- good night and good luck!

Roman responds: Wow, one of the best posts ever. Thanks. And thanks for "premonitory." Not bad for a Packer fan.

Bears fan or Packer hater, there's no denying that Favre was one of the best to play the game. Back when I cared more about the Bears I couldn't stand him, but now in my older age I realize it was just because he was so damn good.

Even when he reached the end of his career he was still probably the most fun player in the NFL to watch. No one did it like Favre.

Ding dong the witch is dead!!

Brett Favre was a winner period. The Kind of QB that we Bears fans could only dream of. Don't send the guys in the white coats after me, but you know? if you look at the other QB's in the Bears division, I would Take either Grossman or Orton over them. who would you want? an unproven Rodgers for GB? Kitna? Jackson? that being said, it's not greatness on the Bears part, but a lack of talent at that position.

Roman- yes, some Packers fans have quite an extensive vocabulary outside of cheese, sausage, and beer....;) And not to mention we also know that the "v" is silent in Brett's last name....ha ha

Roman responds: I think Aaron Rodgers may turn out to be a pretty good quarterback. You?

What does Brett Favre retiring mean to me...........

Brett Favre retiring means no watching ESPN or NFL Network for a week as it'll be 24/7 Favre. Good thing John Madden doesn't have his own network!

In the first game that Bret played against us in 2007 he did this play action pass where the RB went through the middle. Brett turned the ball over and did this neat under-handed flip to the runningback. And then there was the last win of 2007 where Brett got pushed out of the pocket. He pretended to be stumbling out of bounds until he saw the open man, then he flipped it forward to the receiver. Cool moves.

Boo hoo.
Inbreed Packer fans just love to taunt other teams when one of their players gets hurt, retires or signs with someone else.
Now we are supposed to feel sorry for them? I don’t.
Good luck with your tougher schedule and Aaron Rogers at QB.

No more drama queen Favre deciding if he will grace the league with his presence every training camp.

Packers go 6-10 in 2008 if they are lucky.

My most vivid moment will be in the fall when they beg him out of retirement. I give him 1 month on the couch before he gets the itch.

Nothing but respect for #4, he could come and start for us if he wants.

Good riddance. Favre can take his all of his interceptions and go back to Kiln and cut grass, or make homemade moonshine in his still, or whatever he's going to do. He has been the most overrated player in football history. All this "gunslinger" crap was just another way to say he never learned to read a defense. And his one Super Bowl win and two Super Bowl appearances, well there are at least 10 QBs with the same distinction. Now Joe Buck, Aikman, Collingsworth, Madden, Michaels, and all of the windbags at ESPN will have to find someone else to fawn over.

John Madden is now on 24 hour suicide watch.
I will choose his last pass to be my memory of him.
But, I will admit, now that he's gone, 8-8 might win the division, which give the Bears a good chance.
Aaron Rodgers is probably the second coming.
Of Kyle Boller.

I have endured an inter-faith marriage (me Bears, him Packers) for 20 years. We've had many debates over our respective teams but there was never an argument about Favre's greatness, leadership, resiliency or determination.

I hope the man went on his own terms and I wish him the best. Maybe we'll see him again in 'Something about Mary II'

And just when I think Jay Mariotti has written the stupidest article ever, he out-stupids himself as he did today.

As a Bears fan I have always liked Brett, but certainly wanted him and Green Bay to lose each and every game.
He played the game hard and had fun. Just the way you would teach kids.

Mariotti is a moron (I know, that's redundant). He is absolutely clueless, when will the local sports shock-jock finally retire.....soon we all can hope. Holy Napoleon complex batman.

I'm glad he's gone, in the same way that I'm sure Packer fans were glad when Walter retired.

The bottom line is the Packers and Vikings are still WAY better than the Bears and the Lions are moderately better.

If you liked the latter stages of the Wanny and Jauron regimes, you'll LOVE the next four years......

My first and foremost thought has to do with the first article I saw regarding Brett's retirement.

Tell me why this paper's management regards Jay Mariotti as their premiere sports columnist??????????????

Is there anything more moronic and self-absorbed than Mariotti's whinging that Favre should have returned for one more shot at a title?

What humongous gall!

Roman, it is not so much as bye-bye, but why in the heck we don't acquire quarterbacks like this.

Lets take a look.

Bart Starr: Won the first two Super Bowls, but several consective NFL championships before the name change.

Brett Favre: has won three consecutive AP MVP awards, the first and only person in NFL history to do so. He helped the Packers appear in two Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl XXXI. Favre also started every Green Bay Packers game from September 20, 1992 to January 20, 2008. (WE CAN'T GET ONE TO LAST AN ENTIRE SEASON!!)

Understand, people still speak fondly of Bart Starr, but Brett Favre has given Packer Fans more to talk about.

If not for Jim McMahon, you guys (the media) would still bring up Sid Luckman. At least he had the right LAST name.

HOW COME WE CAN'T GET QUALITY QB'S? oh that's right Chicago Bears are owned by the McCaskey's!

My most vivid memory of him was that same game the Packer fan remembered where he took pictures with all his guys and boo-hooed like it was his last game. Yeah, Madden lost his bestest friend. Who is he on first name basis with, now?

And that dork had some nerve to announce he was coming back for 2007 during the Super bowl week for the BEARS. All he ended up being for me was a glory hog. I didn't want him to retire because he finally started to lose to us when it mattered in the standings. He didn't do diddly in the fourth quarters anymore but the announcers still kept mentioning it whenever they were down in the fourth. So long Mr. OnlythinginWisconsinprosports that was worth anything since Lombardi.

My most Vivid memory of Mr. Jeremy, er I mean Favre, is that the last pass of his career was a rocket right to Corey Webster in the NFC Championship game. Oh and that I was there for both loses to the Bears in his final season. I'm taking bets that he becomes an analyst for NFL Network and makes a few "movies" with Steve Mariucci. Unfortunately, this retirement does absolutely nothing to increase the Bears chances in the NFC North.

What's today .... the 4th?

That settles it then.

His announcement on March 4th 2008 is, without a doubt, my favorite memory of Brett Farve.

Good luck, and good riddance, you Bear skinning SOB!

Tim sez: "Is there anything more moronic and self-absorbed than Mariotti's whinging that Favre should have returned for one more shot at a title?

What humongous gall!"

My sentiments exactly, Tim.

Jay Mariotti is one sorry excuse for a writer.

I've read better stuff on bathroom stalls.

In fact ... I've written better stuff on bathroom stalls.

Im with MarkV

Screw that flipping cheesehead!

I know some of you would love to lick Bretts boot heels...(roman), but i seriously doubt NY feels the same way about Michael Jordan... or the Patriots about the Ditka..

I dont care what kind of magical career he had, it was in a Packer Uniform, and he might as well of had a Taliban Headress to boot...made of cheese.

(Hitman, I always knew you were a rump ranger)

Bottom line is Favre has just as many titles as Trent Dilfer. Who would you rather have under center come crunch time, Brady, Montana, Bradshaw, Aikman and Namath...or Brett. If you can honestly say the pill popper, Roman should revoke your right to post. Props to all those Mariotti haters out there, he really is clueless and I love when he gets muted consistently on Around the Horn. I would like to see the following grudge match for Jerk of the Year in Chicago sports...hell maybe even a multi threat title match. Mariotti, Wirtz (dig his old bones up)McCaskey and Reinsdorf all battle for the Jerk of the Year in Chicago sports.

Bye Possum.

John Madden is texting Tony Romo right now......

hey tones, how ru? wanna be my new bff? i know ur rotfl, but pls tmb and lmk, ok qt? cu l8r. xo, jm

All I want to say is how lucky we are to have had 3 of the best who ever played their game in this area. Michael Jordan, Brett Favre, and, this coming from a die hard Packer fan, Walter Payton. All 3 should be admired for not only what they brought to the game, but also how they lived their lives. Class acts, all 3

Moving away from Chicago after the Bears greatness of the mid 80's was hard. Initially I loved this guy because he stunk. Then he became one of the greats. We should remember him as such because unlike some other sports legends in Chicago he didn't have a mean streak if you got on his wrong side. He was and will always be Payton-esque. He's transparant and makes no excuses. That's pretty rare now adays.

I've never posted before but follow this blog a lot. Good job Roman!

p.s. hitman - grow up.

GLAD TO BE RID OF FAVRE FAVRE FAVRE FAVRE, ALL WE HEARD FROM END OF 2006 NFL SEASON TO END OF 2007 NFL SEASON. SICK OF THE SPIN HE RECEIVED FROM ALL AROUND. NOT THAT HE WASN'T GOOD . BUT SICK OF HIM. AND GLAD HE IS STAYING IN MISSISSIPPI. JOHN ELWAY WAS THE MAN "THE WINNER" IN WAYS THAT FAVRE AND ALL HIS STATS COULD NOT MATCH. SO JAYBIRD HAD ENOUGH OF FAVRE AND YOUR TURNCOAT TAKE ON ALL CHICAGO TEAMS.

Im sure Madden's phone has a keyboard on it!

This isnt the 90's anymore...

I don't remember exactly what year it was but I had managed to get tickets for the last game of the the season against the Pack for my 2 boys for Christmas. If I could have I would have talked them out of going because the temperature at game time was -5 and didn't get any warmer. Then watching Favre perform surgery on the Bears defense only seemed to make it feel even colder. Although the boys loved going to their first Bears game, even if it was a loss to the Pack, years later they both agreed the only redeeming fact of sitting in that bitter cold was to have been able to watch a future hall of famer perform under those conditions.

Gang, if you hate Jay Mariotti so much, then stop reading his articles! I agree with less than 10% of what he says, but if you think bashing him on a blog is going to hurt him, forget about it. He THRIVES on it, hence, he is doing what he is paid to do. Bring up questions, and see how people respond! I am a Cowboy fan, and I loved when Dallas of the 90's beat the tarnation out of the Packers, but I have always respected #4. He left on his own terms. My Uncle John at the Sports Page is drowning his sorrows, I bet! Go Cowboys!!!

What a sad day in Chicago when we have to open our sports page to see Brett's face
splattered all over. I guess I'd rather you devote your time, energy, and space to writing about
OUR sports teams and OUR sports heros. A nice little ten-word article about the Cheesehead
would have been quite enough. (especially since we've had to endure about five Brett retirements.)

Roman responds: Is this THE Julie? You've changed your handle? And c'mon, the guy has thrown more passes to Bears players than many Bears quarterbacks. Hey, Culzie has suggested a fullcourtpress awards thread. Wer'e going to do it. Give me categories (or as Culzie says "catagories") and nominees.

Unfortunately,we have not heard the last of this supposed adult with the adolescent mentality.Commentators will continue to slobber around him incessantly for probably all of next season. I can understand the impulse on your part, Roman, but would have preferred a blog on Booker.

Roman responds: Paul, my brother, you're suggesting we should have abated a blog on Favre for one on Booker?

Up until the last few years he just killed the Bears, but anytime the Packers were playing anybody else I would be rooting for him. Great role model as well, always straight with the media and the fans. The NFL will be worse off with his retirement.

That other Julie is not, I repeat NOT the one and only Pit Vipress. Plain old Julie is an impostor. You can tell the difference because I can appreciate Brett Favre's career and limiting an article about him to 10 words is ridiculous request. Although I can't say I'm too upset by his retirement.

Anyway, let me think about categories for the awards. I really like the idea. Just off the top of my head:

Biggest Butt-Kisser (obvious choice for a winner)
Worst Spellar
Biggest Girl
Best Song

I'll get back to you......

This Thread is very mysterious and eeerie.
We have another Stuck in WI ( who is now one of my instant favorite posters) and another potential Julie??
weird day???

Boooooooo Marty Booker! I think he's even older than you Roman.

Adays????

Seriously...a Booker Blog wouldve at most elicited a few cheap Jim Miller jokes from me at best.

Yall can say goodbye all you want. Brett is going to be back! Bears should give him a call.

I agree with what some of the others have said. As much as I am a die-hard Bears fan, I always looked forward to seeing a Packers game on TV because I knew that I'd see a great quarterback. Sure he had some off days, but even his off days were better than most of the days the Bears quarterback position has given us the past few years. He didn't need the money, he didn't need more records, and yet he looked happy to be out on the field, just playing like a kid in a pick-up game at the park. You have to respect the guy, even though he played for our biggest rival. Good luck Brett, and keep smiling!

>>

Yeah, there was almost nothing said about the Patriots quest for perfection. I barely heard about that.

The Julie sez: "Anyway, let me think about categories for the awards. I really like the idea. Just off the top of my head:

Biggest Butt-Kisser (obvious choice for a winner)
Worst Spellar
Biggest Girl
Best Song "

Brett Favre retired?...thank god! go Bears!

seriously, what is with this sh*t?? Brett Favre has nothing to do with Chicago. WHO CARES. Boo Hoo. Sayonara. Adieu. F*ck*ff.

Who cares if he retires? He is a Packer and I don't care about anyone who wears a Green Bay Packer jersey!

EEEEWWWWWW!! Julie, you look at Brett like Ron Jeremy? The one from now or 20 years ago?

I think, with consistent quarterback play, the signing of Marty Booker could pay dividends...

...but I doubt it. He's still got some left in the tank, but unless Orton lives up to what I think he's capable of doing, it'll be just a cheaper Moose--which is cool and all, but not what the Bears need.

I'd have appreciated a "WHY ARE THE BEARS COMPLETELY BOTCHING YET ANOTHER FREE-AGENT-SIGNING PERIOD?!?!?" thread.
