Yeah Jerry, it's about the money

| | Comments (36)

I just heard Jerry Angelo essentially say that he doesn't want to sign free agents who are only about the money. What's he talking about?

If I were an NFL player with limited guaranteed money and who's one career-ending injury away from a post-career life of constant pain and degenerating problems, I would demand as much money as I could get.

Does Angelo players should be so jacked about playing for the Bears that they leave money on the table? Why? This isn't New England where a player might take less for a realistic shot at a ring.

Talk like this often is a pre-emptive strike against expected criticism for not signing anyone.

Do you think Alan Faneca is leaving Pittsburgh for anything but the money?

Get real.

OMG!!!!! This was the crux of the Lance Briggs argument! I agree with you wholeheartedly! Get PAID! But when ole Lance wanted his money...a lot of folks were up in arms about it. See Lance knew about Urlacher and many others. This is a brutal unforgiving game. You lay your life on the line for whatever reasons, and when you get hurt - those fans forget about you like an old newspaper. But you and your family get stuck with the bills and horrible pain. And the Jerry Angelo's go golfing with the proceeds of your sacrifice.

As long as Grossman and Benson are on this team...you bet your a$$ other players are gonna come here for $$ first...They're not winning anything with RexandCed...might as well get paid..

Angelo and Lovie are sickening in what they say....they don't take accountability for mistakes...have very little eye for talent...and to top it all off...these chicks have egos

Seedy..you couldn't pay me 3 mil a year to work with these idiots...I would have an assault charge

Ya wanna neuter your pets.... fine....but there is nothing more sickening than watching the American Male get his balls lopped off....well...These Post-Op Panzies running my football team is kinda gross...

and yes...I just woke up

Seriously, Angelo should just sign 33 kickers-one kicker to back up each position on O, D, and S. Chicago fans would scream "YAY".
No offense to kickers (Gould and Maynard rock!). Perhaps signing 33 holders would be more appropriate. By the way, what's that Justin Guarini doing nowadays?

Angelo is using the media to cushion the lose of Briggs, Berrian, and Ayanbedejo. He could have franchised Berrian, but, other players would be warying of signing future contracts in fear of getting franchised by the Bears. And, if it's about the money then Angelo should take a pay cut to make an example of himself to the players.

Briggs will hurt the most. Berrian can be replaced, And, Ayanbedejo wants too much money for a special teamer and backup LB.

Sign Faneca to play LOG. Draft Virginia's OG Branden Albert or 1/6 OTs which will go in the 1st 35 picks. My guess is USC OT Sam Baker (LOT). Then, continue to build the OL and take Albert or USC OG Chilo Rachal or Drew Radovich in the 2nd/3rd round to chalenege Roberto Garza at ROG.

Also, sign Marty Booker and resign Rashied Davis

Cut Griese, Metcalf, Gilmore, McClover, Archuleta, and Mike Brown.

If Angelo can make these moves, I believe the Bears are back in contention again.

The University of The Chicago Bears?

Roman, you're off on the deep end again. Notice the word "only" in your sentence. Angelo isn't saying money's not important. The "only" thing that should be more important to a free agent than money is winning. That's what Angelo's talking about.

Roman responds: Well guess what Juan in the shallow end, the guys who will help you win are the guys who want the most money.

I just heard Jerry Angelo essentially say that he doesn't want to sign free agents who are only about the money. What's he talking about?

Guess what Mr Angelo? The FANS don't want the owners and management who are only about putting an inferior product on the field in a major city. It is THE MAIN reason why the Chicago Bears, or any Chicago sports team are financially successful. This is a major market with smaller cities surrounding Chicago who are willing to come here to watch games, by the bus loads.

Now Mr. Jerry Angelo, is the Chicago Bears organization REALISTICALLY about keeping its money in their coffers, while expecting the fans to put up with your non-sense?

Sport fans, I know when someone tells me he don't give a damn if they get good players or not. His thinking simply field a team and they (The FANS) will come. Every now and than you have to stop going to the games to gain management's attention. Personally, Chicago fans do not know how to boycott certain sports teams until they become better. I can be die-hard from the comfort of my living room or listening to a radio broadcast. Even more comfortable reading the sports section online presently.

SPORTS FANS, Mr. Angelo just slapped us in the face. If there are no major free agent signings are you still going to rush to Soldier Field and the television to watch a game? I bet if he doesn't SHOW THE MONEY, he won't have to worry about the good players coming here to play, either. At least I will have more time for reading something of more substance, how about you people?

Oh yeah, by the way when was the last Super Bowl Championship Ring Ceremony for the Chicago Bears? SHOW THE MONEY, JERRY!! Show the free agent players the MONEY, Jerry!!

.

What a typical Jerry Angelo statement !!

No wonder that the Bears are in the mess that they are.

One day they wake up --- and the rest of the NFL has passed them by.

.

As long as the CHUMPS keep filling the stands, Gerry will keep doing what he's doing. If they make the Playoffs 2 times in the next 5 years, he will be happy.
Until you see new owners with new ideas, this team will continue to lose. Bob Kraft buys the Patriots and they win, because thats his passion, WINNING. When the Bears as an organization decide thats what they want, then it will happen.

When you look at our teams and and see that people like the late, great Ben Wallace were pulling down $60 million ... Ben Gordon turned down $60 million ... and Cedric Benson isn't worth 60 cents ........... How can anyone doubt that it's all about the "Ben-jamines"?

Bill sez: "What a typical Jerry Angelo statement!!"

What Jerry's trying to tell you is that it's an honor and a privelege to be on this team; and that anyone who expects to be compensated in a manner that is commiserate with his talent, or market value isn't Bear material.

He isn't worthy of being called, "A Bear Man".

When a player leaves or holds out and says "It's not about the money".

What they mean is "IT'S ABOUT THE MONEY"

Earth to Jerry...come in Jerry

Maybe he can give out Scholarships instead?

"This was the crux of the Lance Briggs argument!"

No it wasn't...Briggs was theatening to hold out while he was still under contract. Apples and organges...teams can re-up/extend players or not. THEY'RE choice...you sign a contract, you play.

Actually, I was one of the people who said the Bears should let Briggs go because he wanted too much money and showed too little loyalty to the team. After watching Angelo and Lovie ruin a good team in one season, I am less certain that I blame Briggs now... Thomas Jones and Ron Rivera could probably tell you some things about loyalty and the Bears.

One thing is certain, free agency means big spending. If Angelo doesn't plan to spend, he better pick up six or eight big contributors in the draft, following the Giants model. I won't hold my breath...

Overreacting seems the motto of the day. Let's see how it all plays out. I would not be shocked to see Briggs, Rex, Berrian, et al all back in the Bear camp. And,Roman, with the million or so signing bonus or half million plus per year these guys get paid, I don't have a lot of concern about their future physical problems. Unless they stupidly squander their big bucks, they should be able to comfortably retire by the time they reach thirty and have live-in playboy nurses catering to their bodily infirmities.

I wonder how many Chicago Sports Fans TRULY UNDERSTAND, Chicago sports teams think the owners have literally created a HYPE, Fallacy or fake emotional aura that athletes want to play for Chicago teams?

This is 2008:

Chicago sports fans and bloggers, just because George Halas and the Chicago Bears were here during the inception of the NFL does not mean everyone has this goosey feeling to play for a storied franchise for peanuts.

Chicago sports fans and bloggers, simply because the Chicago Cubs team is over 100 years old and has not won a Championship during this time, always on T.V., playing in Wrigley Field (THE ATMOSPHERE...*sheesh*) does not mean others will sign with this team for nickels and dimes.

Chicago sports fans and bloggers, why do you think there are NO BLOCKBUSTER DEALS for the Chicago Bulls? Yes, we won six championships, but that was the luck of the draw in the draft. We picked Micheal Jordan with the #3 pick. The other players were centers and the conventional wisdom at the time was to always pick the big man for your team. NOTICE HOW THAT IS NOT THE CASE ANYMORE?

Micheal Jordan'S competitive drive to win along with other players seeing his dedication to the game helped fueled winning teams. Only then were other players willing to come play here at a lower rate because of the possibility of winning a championship. (Remember extra money for winning the big one?)

The Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls are owned by the same individual. Reinsdorf got the message when fans stayed away from the baseball park and he decided to loosen up the purse strings and get better players. Now those same fans need to stay wawy from the United Center until he give Paxson the okay to pull the mega-deal for better players.

I am not a huge hockey fan, so I will not speak on this team, but those who are, saw this owner ruin this team as well.

Athletes don't give a FREAK that Chicago has some of the oldest teams in whatever sport's arena. Spending little money and gets very little in return.

Chicago is a major city with a large population that can draw people to its events. Hell, if we can draw millions of people to the Taste of Chicago, what makes the owners think if they make the blockbuster deal we won't support the teams?

I refused to support mediocrity. Yes, I live and die with Chicago teams, but stupid statements such as the one Jerry Angelo recently made doesn't sit too well with me.

Think about people.

You DO know that the Cubs won back to back World Series Championships in 1907 and 1908 right?

Mr. Micheal, what have you done for me lately? The only freaking team that can boast is the Chicago White Sox 2005 Championship team. OKAY? Not even the Chicago Bears can strut around considering how poorly the team played in the Super Bowl. The Bulls have lost its fight presently, and you speak of 1907 and '08.

Guess what? Jack Johnson won the heavywieght championship in 1908 but I don't have to still brag about it. There have been many other Black men to accomplish this feat.

Henry Wadsworth wrote poetry that is more rememberable than those championships you speak so fondly of. Booker T. Washington opened Tuskegee Institute since than. Ever heard of James Baldwin? Check out some of his writings.

Darnnit Ray, Blood Plasma has been invented since the Cubs won a championship. Polio eradicated mostly throughout the world but definitely in American since this time. Let those century old championships go.

The Ford Model T was in production beginning in 1907 and '08 but are you still trying to drive one every day? ( I won't ask buy one, because you will embellish the truth.)

Do you still want to fly cross county or across either Ocean in the Wright Brothers first airplane?

Do you still play with your Lionel Train set from yester-century? Probably so.

The Geiger counter, want to still play with the original one or have a modern one to detect the radiation seeping out of your brain?

Not to go racial, but I will, Jim Crow, Segregation, AND DAMN WOMEN DIDN'T EVEN HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOTE DURING THOSE TIMES MR. Michael. I don't mean minority women, but WHITE WOMEN!! Think they want to reminisce on 1907 or '08? Guess what else was going on? Child labor was rampant at the time!

The most obvious Ray was baseball was sanitized so whites didn't have to compete against the best of ALL PLAYERS in America. (See there Ray, you made me go there)

As I stated earlier, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY, Ray? Oh, I have moments of tangents no matter how small or great so just read it and move along please.

I am not so sure that there werent equally as good white players. I mean, just to say that some of the best (Gibson, Paige) were Black...doesnt mean that they were ALL better than the white guys.

Case in point, when they did blend the races in baseball, it wasnt like they put the white guys out of business...to the contrary.

So...lets not exaggerate ok WNS?

Every job on the planet is about the money but when is enough - enough? These men are getting paid more in 1 year than I'l see in a lifetime so to hear anyone, including fans, back a selfish players GREEDY stance is just SICKENING to me! Was the almost 8 MILLION Lance earned last year not plenty to live on for a lifetime?!?! What message are these guys deivering to thier team mates? Briggs is selfish and I would rather a CANCER like that not influene future or current players on MY Bears team!!

GO BEAR!

Signing of Grossman was laughable. He will never take a team all the way & complete the job. I guess one year won't hurt, but Bears must look for a real NFL QB to get serious among other holes to fill.

I missed something... Will Not Settle made some valid points about our city teams and it's fans but I don't see where the argument turned unto him trumpeting race as an angle. I went back and forth through all his entries and he never mentioned Josh or Satch or black people being better at sports. He mentioned how so much has passed in 100 years and no team has actually won many championships around here except the teams that had the best player in NBA history as it's star and that fans act like there is some great desire to play in Chicago. He's right that many stars have skipped coming here because EVERY team here has been too frugal to pay the best talent. If we didn't draft it we've hardly kept it when it came time to pay up. Keep kidding yourselves that Krause wanted to see if he could put a championship team together without Michael. He had an owner who just wanted to go cheap. Saved himself from paying Michael 30 million dollars a year. Even though that is too much for any man to make someone was making it. Right. Close the can on that racial angle quick. No one else saw it either.

Roman, I'm not sure if you misquoted Angelo the first time or he has since made another statement.

Angelo: "If money is the bottom line, I don't want that player."
That is not the same as saying the player is only about $.

This is a dumb statement by Angelo because "bottom line" by and large refers to $. If Angelo writes this stuff himself he's a fool. If he's paying someone for it he's a bigger fool.

Using a negative as a lure to free agents is just plain stupid. I'll give Angelo a freebie: "I want players who put winning above everything else!"

I think he realizes now how dumb the "bottom line" statement was. His latest is reiteration of the classic "God, family, & football" line.

The most obvious Ray was baseball was sanitized so whites didn't have to compete against the best of ALL PLAYERS in America. (See there Ray, you made me go there) ~wns

AM I MISREMEMBERING SOMETHING?

Still don't see it. Mentioned race but didn't make it racial. Baseball was segregated and teams did not want to compete with or against black players because they did not want to look bad against minorities. NO minority at No time. Do you know what it meant for a pitcher at that time to have a minority hit a homer off him or for a catcher to have a minority steal a base against him? People acted like the world was going to end. Race was looked at totally different at that time. And if you think it wasn't you are not the historian you say you are. He did not make any racist comments. He did not say that blacks were just better he said that ALL players who were good weren't given an equal chance during those 100 years between the CUBs winning a championship. And with the number of teams out there compared to before segregation there is always more jobs to go around for plenty of players. But imagine how many fringe players would've never been known if minorities were allowed to play. And imagine who would've been known if they were allowed. That's an ugly time in America's past and no one should try and defend it.

"Do you know what it meant for a pitcher at that time to have a minority hit a homer off him or for a catcher to have a minority steal a base against him?"

Absolutely correct. You know what's interesting, or perhaps another sign of progress (see Obama), is basketball. I played through jr college and this is exactly the way black players feel when they get scored on, or have a shot blocked by a white player.

Just funny is all...

Willy...I do know what its like to argue in the face of extreme biggotry...

I do it with you all the time.

===

Secondly...

I took umbridge with the fact that he said that at the time...the best players were Blacks. His words...(just words) not mine.

I was simply saying that im sure there were good whites and good blacks...and that all the whites were not inferior...

I have never will I ever claim to know what it was like to live during slavery or segregation.

I just know what I know...and that isnt much!

Carl:

" this is exactly the way black players feel when they get scored on, or have a shot blocked by a white player.

Just funny is all..."

It's not funny, it's sad. Those boys need to worry about graduating instead of who can dunk on who.

BC, still, he mentioned the word minority. He didn't say black. You made it about black and white. He said minority. Which encompassed hispanics as well as all non-whites. I understood what he meant by it and so did everyone else but you. If everyone else thought he was making it about white/black there would have been about 20 or 30 entries debating that fact. Simply put, our issues come from the fact that you mock race like it's a joke. Telling a Native America that they should've been glad that they inter-mixed with a white person because it saved them from a life on the reservation is_______. Check yourself sometimes and you will see that some things you say is borderline racist and definitely sexist. You'll say anything as a joke but it's that underlying meaning behind that I feel is what makes you who you are to plenty of people.

Dude, mentioning guys getting dunked on and being angry about it isn't even scratching the surface of ugliness. If you were doing the dunking Carl I wished you would have made the NBA because I'm all for everyone bringing excitement to any sport.

WILLY.. YOU ARE THE MOST IGNORANT POSTER ON THIS BLOG. JUST READ YOUR BOYS COMMENTS BEFORE YOU TAKE BLIND DEFENCE OF THEM....HE USES THE WORDS BLACK/WHITE...and HE EVEN SAYS..."I dont want to go racieal...BUT I WILL"

what part of this cant you read??? Are you so blind you cant open your eyes up to the truth??? YOUR BOY SAID THESE THINGS...NOT ME.

HEre..tell me he didnt say these things again...I DARE YOU!

Also, your buddy the half mohawk, was the one who made fun of his own grandmother having to run instead of having a baby with a white guy. YOU DONT THINK THATS INSULTING TO WHITES?

IF YOU DONT....YOUR A BIGGER FOOL THAN I EVER IMAGINED.

but i still love ya!

When it came to baseball he said minority and he NEVER said that he felt that blacks were better. He ran down the changes over the last 100 years and mentioned race about a few things and women being unable to vote. He did not say blacks were better than whites in baseball. He said that minorities who might've been good were not allowed to play baseball. He never mentioned any black baseball players who he thought were better and he mentioned Jack Johnson as the first black champion and never said that he was better than whites. I keep reading it and I don't see anything he said that would support the argument that YOU raised. I don't even know who WNS is so why do you constantly call people who I agree with "my boy"? See what I mean about your inability to read what you write before you push that "post" button? And who in particular wrote that phrase about the Indians? We have people who come and go on this blog. And when people who hit and run and never come back or if it's someone using a fake name, who cares ? But if it's a regular or a "constant blogger" such as yourself who make those S.A. comments it's a pain in the ass for people who have been on this blog for a while to have someone read half their entry and then act like you know what they said. You are the "skim king" and you only write things to please yourself. You don't add, you try to dominate. If you only want your own voice heard go somewhere where you can do that. You're the only one who call me names because I'm the only one who call you OUT when you offend people. And I know you are not questioning if someone can read because you can't spell most of the time. Here's your pipe put that in it and smoke it.

I do skim a lot...

and I apologize...I thought you guys were tight.

(it was probably Hitman...)
