« Wrigley by any other name ... | Main | Bears re-sign Briggs, lose Berrian to Vikings »

Who are you more worried about losing: Briggs or Berrian?

Lance Briggs is the more talented player, but the Bears may be less equipped to deal with losing Bernard Berrian.

Look, I saw those drops, too. Berrian didn't have a good season, but who's going to be your No. 1 receiver if Berrian leaves? Mark Bradley? Please. Devin Hester? No.

Briggs is a great player, maybe better than Brian Urlacher, but I think the Bears can do a better job filling that hole.

And now this mess with Brian Griese is a little embarrassing. They're trying to trade him before a $300K incentive kicks in Tuesday. Of course, no team will trade for him when they know they can get him for less Tuesday because the Bears plan to dump him, according to Griese's agent.

It seems the Bears are penalizing Griese for some reason. That silly incident when he took credit for the winning drive in Philadelphia and then had to say it was Ron Turner who called the plays comes to mind.

Maybe better than Urlacher?

You lost me homie!!

I dont remember a 2hr hi-light reel worth of Game Changing plays from Briggs these last + seasons.

Sure some good numbers and some big hits, but come on?

Better now...like post Urlacher injury?

I've heard Berrian already turned down a pretty big deal from the Bears. Nice #2 receiver but pulleeaasse.

Briggs is good but on occasion gets badly exposed (see super bowl). Urlacher has seen better days.

I say turn back the clock and sign Booker and Colvin to plug a few gaps. Probably take 2/3 the money than the other 2. Bears are badly in need of O lineman. Unless they use the draft and free agency on at least 2 spots it doesn't matter who they get at receiever.

This team has LOTS of holes.

Briggs is a very good player, and I hope he resigns. However, all the pressure is taken off of him because of Urlacher. How he made it to the probowl this year is a mystery.

If having to choose between the two, I'd say it's worse to lose Berrian. The Bears have had a lot of success filling Briggs' spot.

It is very simple. Sign Flozelle Adams and Michael Turner. Then, you can draft a WR with the first pick, and a LB in the third round.

I could care less about either one of 'em

Bradley and Hester are 1 and 2 at WR...and Briggs..well...ummm..Jamar Williams..and duh

hopefully, the limp-wristed anointing of starters is over...still limp wristed, tho...ie..see Brian Griese bs today...and

Grossman and Benson wouldn't be on a roster anywhere else...

spend the $$ in FA on the Oline..and draft a RB in the first...cut Benson June 1st...and..lmao.. Grossman doesn't have a chance competing against Orton

We should be good then..

the queens in the front office didn't do what I said until the last two games of the season last year....sooo...I'm not holding my breath...jerry and the yes men are as embarrassing as RexandCed

Laughing-Stock-of-the-N-F-L

JaMarcus Russel and Michael Bush should be fun to watch

and FYI...Berrian is too small and too easily jammed at the line to be a #1 WR...he's never been the #1 and he never will be a #1

Sounds like he has Alvin Harper disease...

Brian Griese is a classy individual who has been treated in the most classless fashion. He led the Bears to several 4th quarter come from behind wins, gets benched, gets rusty when benched, then benched when he is rusty.

He is a man who can complete 70 percent of his passes, make fine decisions on the field, and as we saw, lead a team down the field. Getting jerked around didn't help when he was called upon.

I hope he gets to go to an organization that can properly use a quarterback who completes all his passes and calls a good game. I certainly won't miss Lovie's stupid "Rex is our quarterback" mantra when Rex mangles another game with Griese looking on.

I hate to see Briggs or Berrian go but for the money we can save on those two to maybe get a RB and some O-line. I say goodbye to both. Our running game needs to improve first and foremost and that is done in the trenches. If you want to turn back the clock then why not keep Thomas Jones in that list as well. Remember, with a good running game the pass opens up a lot more.

In Danny Glovers voice: "Briiiiiiiiiiiiggs!"

Gang, I am still plugging for Sonny Sixkiller to be the Bears starting QB. Oh, and how about Fred Bilitnikoff for a WR? Then reincarnate Willie Galimore for RB? Then we could get Jim Otto to play center, ad move Olin Kruetz to Left Tackle. Then get Mick Tinglehoff for a guard? Oh, and Jery Kramer, and Noah Jackson too? Then for Defense, we can obtain Alan Page from the Minnesota Supreme Court, Wally Chambers as tackles, then Harvey Martin and Ed 'Too Tall'Jones for Defensive Ends? The get Papa Bear reincarnated for Head Coach! Oh, and we can get Bob Thomas off of the Illinois Supreme Court and John Roveto in here for competition for Robbie Gould, then cut him and resign Mac Percival. And Mugs for GM??? Give it a rest. They SUCK, and will until Angelo and Lovie Howell Smith are gone...

I smell old school?

Briggs and Berrian both should be Bears in 2008 and for years to come. Yet, as we will soon find out, they will earn more money elsewhere, so the greener grass calls their names and egos, respectively. Being a lifelong Bears fan, and a believer in both these players, I am utterly shocked the Mr Angelo is still the GM of our team. Mr Sobriety should have had a couple of cocktails eons ago and offer number 80 and 55 lucrative contracts to ensure that their big egos were satiated and their good play rewarded!

As Mariotti pointed out tonite, the Bears are the Misers of the Midway! We have $30 million to spend, and two of our top players will flee with glee, and we'll even lose our best special teamer to boot.

Man, I am disappointed with the front office - the cheap, under-cutting, parsimonious ways that started with Halas and continue today with the McCaskey's, will hinder the Bears chances of ever winning a championship until there is a change at the top. The very top! Where's Mark Cuban?

Twenty years after dismantling one of the most dominant teams in NFL history, the Bears are at it again. Where's Wilbur Marshall?

Briggs.... Colvin....what's the diff - we got along just fine after Rosie left and we'll be aight after Lance hits the dusty trail.... I like Bernard on one side and maybe a bigger reciever on the other side now that there will be no more "MOOOOOOSSSSSEEEEE" calls in Chicago......with Devin in the slot.... if we only had good arms to throw to them or a nice sized back that isn't made of porcelin to draw in the safeties and corners a bit

linebackers and receivers are plug and play. What they need are a quarterback and running back.

Briggs was CLEARLY the best defender on the bears this year. Everybody is so far up Urlachers ass they fail to see who was really the impact player on the D this year. The thing with Briggs is he has progressed every year. How many 100 yard rushers did the bears give up this year??? I would say Urlacher has lost a step or two.

well, everyone seems to have hit the nail on the head in this topic. So, in the spirit of Bernard and Lance, I say to you:
NEXT!!!!!!!!

I hate to lose either one of them.
But, after just being informed yesterday, that my entire engineering department where I work is being eliminated for outsourcing, and Berrian turning down 25 MILLION DOLLARS.....I could really care less what happens to either of them.
They'll have a sweet life where ever they go.
Me on the other hand....

Roman responds: From someone in the newspaper industry, I feel your pain. Good luck.

.

Let em both go. As others have pointed out Berrian is not all that great and Briggs is a weak side linebacker, which are a dime a dozen.
They should should package their 1st round pick and try to shore up the "O" line and then draft as many ahtletic players as they can. That and some key free agent signing and they may be okay.

Get Devery Henderson while he's still around. Atleast it's something (sarcasm). I hate this management. I bet that Bears are going to sit on their asses while the good players are taken. Then sign some mediocre playes and sing khumbaya until the fans realize they were duped once more. You know I'm not upset at Briggs & Berrian. Yea they do want more money, but to me they know that this ownership/management will never get anywhere. I bet if they knew that there was a chance to get to the Superbowl again they would have stuck around.....

Note to Bears management: Let Brian Griese go... don't be upset that he proved that Turner doesn't know *^%$.

Come on.
Why would anyone not pick a pro bowl LB who is one of the top players in the league at his position over a guy who is no better than a number 2 WR and drops too many passes?

This is pretty much like saying that you would take Willie Gault over Mike Singeltary. Get a grip
Draft some O linemen and sign Michael Turner or sign the linemen and draft Mendenhall.
You can find a fast WR in the draft that catches just as many passes as Berrian. Cedric Benson at RB is going to be the biggest killer on this team no matter who else is playing.

What about going after Brady Quinn?

Report: Anderson gets multiyear deal from Browns

Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson wasn't a free agent for long.

Anderson

Anderson has agreed to a multiyear contract to stay with the Browns, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been completed.

General manager Phil

It will be tough to lose both of them but when Jamar Williams filled in for Briggs in mini-camp and in the 2 games Briggs was out with an injury he looked very good and the Bears didnt miss a beat. According to other players on the Bears and the coaching staff they were very comfortable with the prospect of having Jamar start in Brigg's spot in case of a hold out last year. I don't think the Bears will miss a beat without Brigg's. Berrian on the other hand we will miss. Not so much as how good a receiver he is but more so that we have virtually no depth at wide receiver with the loss of Muhammad as well. If the reports are true about the 5 year $25 million dollar offer the Bears offered Berrian that he turned down then let him go. That was a very aggressive offer and if some team wants to overpay him like to the ViQueens then bye bye Bernard! I listened to NFL radio on Sirius radio and every single analyst they had said that the offer the Bears made to Berrian was more than fair and if he doesnt take it then too bad, bye bye then.

ummm, that's not good if Minnesota gets Berrian...I didn't say he sucked..and with Sidney Rice, he doesn't have to be the #1 guy...and Minn will pay him like one with Rice still in his rookie deal...and I don't care what you say about Bobby Wade...I've watched him since high school...his sister is hot...and she looks just like him...didn't see that one comin didya's..

Lance Briggs to DaRaidahs would make me happy

I want at least two OL

if he's the #1 guy, I think Bradley will have better stats next year than Berrian did this year.

Maybe in tribute to the Bears miserly approach to players salaries the fight song should have a lyric change to "Bare down Chicago Bears"

hey,, we got Grossman, we don't anyone else...................to blow our chances again.

No brainer here. Berrian doesn't deserve the money he's asking. He's just fortunate to be in a period where N.F.L. premium receivers are scarce. Minny's gonna get him because his speed becomes two-fold on the turf and the Vikings know it. I've seen plenty of good plays by Berrian that deserve the highlight film room, but between the drops, and the fact that man goes down if you breathe heavy enough near him, puts him out of a NUMBER ONE category. Maybe number one on the Bears, but not a true number one for the dollar he's going to get.

Lance Briggs is TOUGH!

I'm not WORRIED about seeing either one go, considering the business circumstances surrounding the issue, but I would LOVE to see Lance stay before Bernard any day.

Williams, Paxson, Angelo, Reinsdorf, McCaskey?

When does this nightmare end?

I do know one thing. My HEART goes out to the fans.

Berrian Or Briggs? Not really sure but what I am most worried about is the teams in our divison getting very aggressive while we are sitting back and doing nothing. The Vikings have already signed a very good saftey and Full Back. They are targeting Berrian big time and already have the number 1 rushing attack and a good defense to boot. If the bears do not take it out of neutral and keep watching the list of free agents dwindle, we are done! We need Berrian back because no reciever on the market is going to want to come to Chicago with the uncertian QB situation and a very poor running game and O line right now. Please tell me that Angelo has a plan and is not hoping to fill the many holes of this team via the draft.....

Lets face it boys with the QB's you have it doesnt really matter who else you have on the field. Good news for me is looks like Berrian has a pretty good shot a being a Viking because he was picked up in Wilf's private Jet last night. Nothing like losing one of your better players to a divisional rival!!! I can only imagine what Berrian could do if he had someone to throw to him. Bad news for me is the Vikes are not in a much better position with TJAX firing the ball all over the field. Anyway I just want to say I hate the bears and GOOO Vikes!!

briggs better than urlacher?

ridiculous.

This team is one giant hole, so does it really matter? Berrian is no number 1 receiver so to pay him the money just out of despiration makes about as much sense as throwing the money off the top of the Sears Tower. Briggs can go as far away as possible, good riddance and good luck to whom ever signs him. Without a force in the middle, such as Urlacher (when healthy), Briggs is no more than an average to slightly above average LB. We don't need the headaches so let them go.

....I THINK THE BEARS SHOULD KEEP BOTH PLAYERS. BERRIAN FOR HIS EXPLOSIVE SPEED AND BRIGGS TO KEEP AN AGING DEFENSE FROM GETTING ANY MORE POROUS PAST THE D-LINE. MIKE BROWN NEEDS TO GO (TOO INJURY PRONE) AND THEY SHOULD DRAFT RB MENDENHALL (ILLINOIS) FIRST ROUND, 2ND ROUND (O-LINE) AND PLUCK THE FREE AGENT MARKET FOR A SECOND COMPLIMENT TO BERRIAN ON THE RECEIVING CORPS. ANOTHER OF ADDRESSING IS EITHER TRYING TO TRADE FOR A QB OR PICKING SOMEONE IN THE SECOND OR THIRD ROUND ON A QB. MAYBE CHAD HENNE OR THE KID FROM OREGON, SOMEONE WHO IS FASTER THAN OUR O-LINE. WHEELS ARE NECESSARY IN TODAY'S NFL. FLAT FOOTED GRIESE OR HESISTANT GROSSMAN WON'T GET THE JOB DONE. JULIUS JONES IS AVAILABLE, WHY NOT TAKE A BITE AND SEE IF THE YOUNGER JONES IS WORTHY. BENSON LOST ANY CONFIDENCE LAST YEAR AND HAS THE SPEED OF A SNAIL/TURTLE. BEARS

GOVIKES, that's okay, I don't mind being called a boy. Obviously you are unfamiliar with the Pit Vipress. You can keep Berrian - he's not a top 10 WR by any stretch. Why don't you keep a tally of how many times you say "he shoulda caught that," and I'll tell you how many times I say "purple is a sissy color," and we'll compare at the end of the season. By the way, how tall is Tavaris Jackson anyway? Like 5'2"???

Keeping none, 1, or both of them will not fix the bears problems! Without an O Line none of these arguments matter. The management of this teams roster is RIDICLOUS. Don't get me wrong the 2 of them are very good players but Briggs can't help our offense and BB will never get the ball with the QB on his back. O LINE should of been the #1 priority and once again JA has fumbled the ball.

Im more worried about this Old A** Thread buring a hole onto a my computer screen.

Can we get a new topic?

I know you like to go to Red No.5 untill 4am, but thats what you have Ricky for...

Forget Berrian, he's easily replaceable in the draft with a 3rd round pick. If Briggs wants more $$ than offered, let him find it. He won't and will probably be back. Brendan A. is more important than either in the scheme of things because he's the heart of the Bears best unit - special teams.
The Bears ought to step up and trade their pick and Devon Hester for the first pick and take Matt Ryan.

It's an equal loss.

I'm seeing the name Jovan Walker being thrown around. That'd be nice!

Who cares about either of them? The Bears are rebuilding, even if they won't admit it. Next years draft picks will probably a lot higher than this years draft picks. People also need to stop thinking O line in the 1st, after Long none of the OT's are worth the 14th pick. You can get the same quality of guy in 2nd that you can at 14. You go running back in the first if the Bears can get Mendenhall or at 14 they get a steal and sense they don't even have a starting running back this would probably be a good pick. 2nd Round go OT and QB or WR depending on who is there, 3rd go OL and DL, or WR. Stay away from the LB in this class there garbage. Only the top 2 or three are decent and they will be gone. No safties either cause it is a really bad class for them. Also the Bears no matter when they take an OT will not be getting a left tackle, the only guy who fills that role is Long and he will not be there. No matter who they get this year you cannot fix this team all the way, it will take at least 2 years to rebuild maybe three, cause the Bears have a ton of needs, SS, RB, QB, DT, LB, WR, OL, FS, they could really use a pass rushing stud as well. One who can actually start all the time. The Bears have missed there window. This team is not going any place for about 3 years. But hey at least we have the Bulls, uuummm I mean the Cubs, I am sure now that the Devil is the owner they will win the Series even though he seems to hate the team and wants to destroy it, well at least the Cell has good food. Chicago Sports? Third biggest market in the country and this is what we get.

This is the issue I have at linebacker position. No, better I don't touch it, instead!

With Berrian, I am not going to lay a lot of fault at his feet. All the darn receivers were dropping balls. I still don't understand how Moose became a butterfingers so quickly after signing his contract? With that being said, some players are going by what the previous guy received at the same position. Now is that the owners fault or the players. It cannot be both!

Ok folks; you can now, 'officially', stop worrying about losing Bernard Berrian.

Hopefully, in a day or two, we'll also be able to stop worrying about losing Briggs. (and hopefully, it'll be for the same reason)

Funny how the market's dried up for old Lance. He really thought he was "the goods", and spent the better part of two years begginng for his freedom.

Well, you're free now Lance. Flap your little wings and fly.

Just be careful not to let anything hard hit you in the face when you come crashing back to reality. Try to land on natural grass; not Astro-turf.

I would not like to see either one go, but don't over pay. In today's football you can't lock into a nice player to have, but not a difference maker. Both have had flashes of being that difference make, but not enough to say we can't go on without either one of them. Briggs was a third round selection that grew nicely into his spot at wekside LB, but if you can get Dansby or a player with speed, tackling can be taught. I can live with losing Briggs, if we can get a pro-bowl saftey instead. I would love to have both. Berrian hurts, but I wouldn't over pay.

Thanks, Julie

The guys appreciate your comments. Go Vikes, You shoulda resigned Randy Moss instead of Berrian, in fact, how much is Moss worth now that Berrian is the 4th Highest paid receiver in the NFL? WHAT A DAMN JOKE!!! The Vikes just screwed the whole league of billionaires and millionaires.

To the haters, and the Mariotti fools who use his opinions and not their own...

Shut up, Forever!!!!

Guess Lance did want to play next to Brian, I do not believe he thought he would get more money than the franchise, it was all a show. From never playing for them again, to signed for 6 years, wow!!

What the Vikings really need to worry about is if Peterson can hold up, he already has Raymont Harris' collarbone, his body will not last at this state.

Only hitman could make this about Grossman, maybe if Kyle could hit his receivers a lot more often, and AP could actually run faster AND quicker, and stop fumbling, he could come up with another theme song. His old one is played out.

IT DOSENT MATTER OUR BEARS ARENT GOING ANYWHERE ANYWAYS!!NOT UNTIL THE CHEAP MCKASKEYS SELL THE TEAM.Anyway Id rather have the proven player in Briggs!!So hopefully well get a franchise QB soon And a proven RB sometime too!!!

Briggs saw the writing on the wall. Isn't this almost the same
money they offered him last year? And no one else in the league
was stepping up. Thank god -- not another Wilbur Marshall.
Much more important than signing Berrian....
Although he's going to another NFC North team, there's no need to
worry; they don't have anyone who can get him the ball.
And since the Bears' secondary already knows BB, those two factors
combine to make me anticipate an increase in interceptions when
we play the Vikings -- as long as Jackson is their QB.

Maybe I'm the one who thought Berrian was a legit number 1 wideout who did his best with the crap team that he had to work with. Bears should have paid him, but they didn't.

If the Bears' had any cajones, they would go after Moss, draft Mendenhall and some ogre-like lineman, and finally we'd have some sort of offensive excitement!
