Grossman returns for another season

| | Comments (81)

BY RICKY O'DONNELL

Because it’s only a one-year contract, I think most people realize that Rex Grossman’s return isn’t the worst thing in the world. We saw last season that if he’s struggling the coaching staff will pull him. I expect the leash on Grossman to be even shorter this season, with Kyle Orton waiting on deck.

The real problem is the lack of quality quarterbacks in the NFL. There simply aren’t enough good ones to go around.

I’ve always been a Grossman supporter and still wouldn’t be surprised if turned into a top-15 quarterback, but the turnover numbers that Mariotti points out today are pretty astounding: in his last 24 games, Grossman has thrown 27 interceptions and has committed 14 fumbles.

Would anyone out there rather have Byron Leftwich or Daunte Culpepper? Is there any chance Orton beats out Rex in camp? The Bears still have a long offseason ahead, but it appears quarterback is settled for at least one more season.

Good. He's back. With so much change needed maybe it was better to keep him and give Orton equal chance to sit him down. He was playing MUCH better in the 2nd half of the season and what he was doing warranted him getting a chance to continue. Don't look at this entry as me flip-flopping because I'm all about giving people a chance. I would easily close the door if he was just awful ALL the time but he has done some great things that Orton or Griese can't even do in their sleep. He needs to get better that's all. Between these three QBs,sadly, he's the better player, overall. That speak of how little I view them really. I think this signals that they are willing to keep Berrian at their price and signing Rex when they could have waited puts the onus back on Berrian to show that he wants to be here. I just think that the BEARS have to tread softly because once you sign Berrian who was still learning maybe what we've seen of him will become complacent.

Rickey axed: "Would anyone out there rather have Byron Leftwich or Daunte Culpepper?"

I'd rather have George Gipp, Linda Tripp, or even Charlie Brown. (with Luch snapping the ball)

I've already had more than enough of Rex, thank you.

My only hope at this point is a silent prayer that the O-Line steps out of the way on his first pass attempt, allowing one of the opposing linebackers to put Rex out of his misery.

It would be like a mercy killing.

I expect the leash on Grossman to be even shorter this season, with Kyle Orton waiting on deck. (ROD)

More like a waiting in a cozy limo with a bunch NorthWestern Co-Ed's and a bottle of Jack D.

Orton waiting on Deck gives me as much confidence in our depth as having a pair of sandals to back up my boots during a rattle snake hunt.

The thought of Lovie Smith standing at the podium, declaring that,
"Rex is our quarterback" and saying it with a straight face, sends chills down my spine.

Strike up....the Music....

I'm pulling hardcore for Orton.

Please don't link Mariotti's columns. It's bad enough that he gets a hit from me every day. I have an excuse, though, because I have a website that makes fun of him, and I need material.

Looks like we have one more passenger for the "Ridem' High Rexmobile of Laughs '08." BC, we have to be better equipped this year. I say, fresh paint, wash, wax and detail, 2 spare tires, pink leather seats and a DJ. We should hire Ricky to be the driver (as he is old enough to drive but not drink) so the rest of us can party - we're gonna need it.

Wets doesn't have a shot at beating out Orton..
but what's worse.. Wets didn't have a shot at signing with anyone else...
So Angelo signs him..

The Bears are the laughing stock of the NFL...

What's next...Pass on Mendenhall and extend Benson?

I was a Raiders fan first...wonder why?

LOL, ya know....I love the Ladies...but not running, coaching, and QB'ing my football team

Say...JaMarcus Russel...now tell me how gay Rex Grossman sounds

I like the move. Orton is expected to sign an extension keeping him a Bear thru 2010 so that makes QB his job to lose. If Grossman can't do any better than backup the Bears saved a few mil in choosing him over Griese.

It's also a sign that Angelo plans to stay cheap at QB and spend the $ elsewhere. That's the right approach for a 7 win team. You don't spend the big $'s at QB unless you get lucky in the draft or your team is on the cusp. The Bears clearly aren't.

27 and 14! Those sound like good NBA numbers. I will root for the man, but don't think he's the next Eli. He should send Eli a basket or something. I believe in Rex as much as I believe in Benson (I have to say stuff like that from now on). And I guess I won't throw any endorsement for the brothers...I guess that sort of thing is only ok for other posters...

Crappy winter,The Bulls suck, The White Sox don't look too impressive, and now this. Put Angelo, Lovie, and Wrecks on a small rocket and blast them all into the black hole.

What a sorry organization. They knew nobody else wanted him, (just check out other teams websites), so they gave him an incentive laden low-ball offer. Why would he even want to be on this team? He will have no supporting cast and is doomed to failure.
Additionally we are now stuck with Trainrex for another season. Start looking forward to the 2009 draft pick, I'm sure it will be a high one.
This team will be lucky if it sees the Playoffs anytime in the near future.

I'm of a mind for hope. I know it sounds stupid, but I think with a better running game he'll be okay. I also don't see any options on the horizon that would be better for the Bears right now. Why invest in a deposed Byron Leftwich or an injury prone McNabb. Culpepper was only a product of Robert Smith, Randy Moss and Chris Carter. He's not and will never again be a great QB in the league. Keep Rex and Kyle, go after a proven commodity at RB such as Michael Turner or Julius Jones. Pair them up with Cedric Benson so he can maybe be the 1-2 punch runner he was when the Bears had Jones and we may have something. Draft a great right tackle, get Faneca at guard and we may have something. Don't forget that Flozell Adams is also on the market at tackle. They need to build the line and the running game. Without those things, it won't matter who is behind Kruetz.

It's a move. I agree that there was nothing better out there.

But all it means is that the Bears will go into another season with no hopes of winning the division or even a playoff game. Over before the season even starts. Disheartening.

We don't need to lock Grossman in; let's keep nickel-and-dimeing him every year. We wouldn't want to end up with a second-best-team-in-the-NFC leading, record-breaking goliath like Favre on our hands, would we? What would our wives think of us?

Grossman has showed that he will be dedicated to the Bears, even when the fans hate him, so I don't know what this lack of trust is all about. Brady in the Superbowl looked a lot like Grossman on a bad day- think about it.

im honestly tired of all of the moaning and bit*hing about Rex...he is here and if there are any real fans out there, needs support to do well....he may not be god or Joe PEsci, but given the right circumstance and intangibles around him, he can succeed...he has 2 young guys in Hester and Olsen who can both cause defenses fits in different ways, and if they actually choose to let Mark Bradley play more than 2 or 3 snaps per game, has himself shown glimpses too...lets remember that last season, he had an aging Moose who consistently couldnt get open and Berrien who dropped a pass or two a game the first 10 games of the season...they were just starting to work in Olsen and later Hester in the offense after Rex was benched....when Rex came back from his benching, he played better because 1) he had an opportunity to watch a veteran in Griese succeed/fail 2) the running game did average another half yard per carry, which doesnt sound like a lot but really is and 3) did have Olsen and HEster there more and Berrien actually started making good catches for a change.......as long as Rex stays to the plan and develops some of that lost confidence he had in early 06...he will be allright....he may have had a shitty game in the SB 41, but so did the defense who gave up 200 rushing yards and blew coverage for the first Colts score....so all of you who singlehandedly blame REX for the superbowl loss need to pull your heads out of your rectum.........it should be obvious that REX is a true soldier, because after all of the CRAP that he has been through in this city, he actually WANTS to come back!!!!

GROSSman is back that short, immobile scatter shot little twerp. The Bears have no intentions of admitting a SCREW-UP and never will. Look how silly they look and sound after eating Rex-crow last season and all those brilliant personnel moves. These idiots better get it right this time or get lost.

Orton would be stupid to sign any extensions...JA is the biggest freaking limp wristed panzy I've ever come across...and the equally limp wristed Yes Man he has in Lovie is also gross....puke sick type stuff..

Orton won't sign any extensions...and he'll be our starter this year...and a FA the next...and I hope he leaves...Rex doesn't belong in the NFL...and I hope he stays

Rextasy Enimas every day.....delivered to you.... by me

and btw...MyHuggableCorkys...please don't compare Grossman's arm or ability to Orton's...

Rex will be out of the NFL in two years.. tops...he needs to find a no-blitzing league

Ricky responds: i think Rex has a better arm then KO. Anyways, did you see the combine results? Mendenhall tore it up, 4.4 40 with 26 reps. I bet he goes top ten now which is good for him but bad for the Bears.

I wish Rex lots of luck this year... gathering splinters from riding the bench.

If he begins the season as the starting QB, then Lovie should be removed and Angelo committed to an asylum (you can decide which kind of asylum).

That would be almost as bad as Mark Anderson starting again... or Adam Archuleta... or Mark Bradley... or... crap... this could actually become reality because of the pathetic "brain trust" we have.

Sticking with Ron Turner was lame, bringing back Rex because he and Turner "click" (according to the Tribune) is doubly lame.

Two lames don't make a right... or a good QB... or a good offense.

However, getting rid of two lames is a double positive, but the Bears missed their oppty to shed a crappy offensive legacy.

Oh well.

Kyle is the dude, but I'm sure the Bears will screw that up too.

Hey, maybe the Bulls will be good next year... or the Hawks... or the Wolves. Yeah, the Wolves. We can always count on them being good.

Keep those hits a'commin.

When you're O line is among the worst in the NFL, what good is wasting a #1 pick on a stud RB?

People can pick on Benson all they want but he had nowhere to run and I think we know how many times Grossman and others got hammered by opposing lineman/LBs without anyone even touching them. If I hear how Kreutz is one of the best centers in the NFL once more, I'll puke. I love those 3rd and 2 plays where Kreutz winds up 3 yards behind the line.

Culzie..I gotta name for your club...Blind Allegiance LoyalLists

and Rickey...you're allowed to think...

Mendenhall to the Raiders would be beautiful....Pat Sims in the second round....DaRaidahs

I really don't care who the Bears pick in the draft...as long as RexandCed are on this team...the season is a wash

I hope DaRaidahs scipe every pick the Bears want...needs are very close

BCulz:

Sounds like sour grapes to me.

We were right about Rex in 2007. Maybe 2008 will be your bandwagon year (Hey, I doubt it, but I'm happy to raise that possibility if it makes you happy).

Kyle is our quarterback
do-dah, do-dah
Kyle is our quarterback
oh-da-do-dah-day
He'll lead us to 10 wins
And overcome our 2007 sins
Kyle is our quarterback
oh-da-do-dah-day

;-)

THE BAL'Z for short

Hitman,

If culzie is part of the "Blind Allegiance LoyalLists" then you and seedy and the rest of the Haters are part of the B.B.B. (Blind Bashing..well you figure out the rest). You guys trip me out. Just go ahead and join Mariotti as the "voice of the fans". Anyway, Grossman has play horrible at times, but when he's had time....what the heck, there's no need to get into all that. As far as it concerns me, I think its good for the Bears that he's back for at least another year. With him and Kyle as either the starter or backup would be good for the team. I honestly thought he would go elswhere with everything that he's gone through with some of the ungrateful fans who expects him to be Peyton Manning, or Tom Brady. Its a shame too because the guys on the Team loves Rex. It has to tell you something about the guy. It doesn't seem like he deserves the kind of scathing articles like the one written by Mariotti. I mean he had NOTHING good to write about the kid? What kind of stuff is that?

What get me is the pure loyalist who refuse to accept a bad word written about Rex. I'm sorry but if he was very good no one would have a lot of negatives to write about. Scratch that. Plenty of people will find something negative to write about but these are different circumstances. If the guy wasn't so erratic so many people would not get so down on him. It's his own fault because it took him much longer than the prescribed time to start and after that long wait it was too up and down to win enough of us over. It's funny how some guys have polar opposite fan approval and others get luke warm praise. Briggs for example get plenty of haters. Moose did. Chris Harris did. Jones did. Benson does. And that's about it. There are plenty of guys who don't get hated on. Become fans of those guys. If not stop getting so bent of out shape just because someone doesn't see eye to eye with you on this matter. Stop blaming everything and everyone else for Rex looking bad and start seeing his complicity in it as well. No, the guy isn't great. Yeah, the O looks bad. But Rex is not perfect and he not being dragged down by everything and everyone else. He gets too much blame and sometimes everyone else shoulders his blame. You guys need to stop getting so emotional with someone just because they are not so in love with him as you are. You guys take it ALL too far. Both ways. Your devoted love for him isn't going to make others hate him any less.

Ok, I'm not a pure loyalist. And Rex has had issues, but go ahead and pop up his stats next to Eli Manning. Numbers for rating, fumbles, pct., avg. etc. are all VERY similar. The funny thing is Manning, Mr. Bloodline, #1 pick, has done about the same job passing with Toomer, Burress, and Shockey catching everything thrown near them AND he's had Tiki Barber and then this years crop of running backs in the backfield. Rex ain't Joe Montana, but if the draft and FA can give us a couple receivers and a line that gives him a little more time he'll be just fine.
The only glaring difference in numbers is games played, Manning 57, Rex 32. And a lot of analysts kept saying Eli's turned it around, the light has gone on, the game slowed down, etc. etc.
I think that may have happened for Rex after the benching last year. Remember him saying after the first game back that he wasn't thinking about anything, just having fun? And his play after coming back was much better than in September, even though the same glass-handed receivers were still mis-running routes. There was no QB out there draft or FA, that would improve the team THIS YEAR. Plus he's playing for a pay day with the contract that Angelo gave him. Give the kid credit for not going FA cause someone would have gave him better $$.

"with Orton waiting on deck" - Ricky O'Donnell

Ricky, you should put more thought into your 'cliches'. That makes it sound like we have a stud waiting to jump on the Chicago Bears Carousel of hall of fame quarterbacks. However, the reality is that Orton is just a guy waiting to go in to hand the ball off whenever Rex gets too 'Turnerized'. Nothing more, nothing less.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO REXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

So, I've been a Bears fan my entire life, I've personally owned seats for the last 4 seasons, and my dad has been season ticket holder since he was 7 years old. A tenant in my grandparents 3-flat (who happened to be the brother of George Halas) gave him the tickets, in lieu of rent I think. I'd have to be a charter member of your club Culzie, but I ain't joinin' no Ballz club. Get a better name.

just for the record, i am not a pro-rex guy, but until i see a better option. Im sticking with our guy. If he loses his job, then I will support whoever takes the Helm.

If BHO gets elected, I will support him too!

Thats just the kinda guy I am. I support OUR guy while we are asking him to do the job we need him to do.

Thanks Jermaine...I couldnt have said it better myself!

It's only a one year deal, and it's not like there's a lot of quarterbacks out there to pick up... Mariotti criticized the deal, but all he could suggest as a replacement was Billy Volek... We'll see for another year... It'll be interesting to see how we draft.

It seems like most of you have this 1 right, and that is Grossman is definately not the answer. However 1 person that seems to escape alot of the blame for this is Jerry Angelo. When you look around the league, there really isn't anyone for the Bears to pick up at QB, and I truely do think next year is going to be ugly. It's pretty hard to win with 1 of the worst offensive lines in the league, a terrible, overpaid, slow running back who can't even break a tackle a game, zero real threats at the reciever position, and a bunch of average to below average NFL QB's. And how do we get to this point? I am not an "expert" but I do pay a good amount of attention to sports, especially the NFL and I saw this day coming ever since day 1 of last season.
We are stuck now and I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel for quite some time. Heres my solution: Play Orton, draft Mendenhall (hes got 10 times the upside to Benson, and I believe might be the biggest sleeper in the draft, even if he is drafted mid 1st round) Pick up Fanica, re-sign Berrian no matter the cost (if we dont you can forget the passing game completely, which in turn will kill the running game)and draft Flocco in the second round as opposed to his current 3rd round predicted spot because someone else will take him before the 3rd round guaranteed. Address the offensive line with some of the picks from 3rd to 7th round (there are plenty of good lineman that go late rounds and have very good NFL careers. And lastly, after Rex's 6th and final year in a Bears uniform, get rid of his worthless a$$ forever!!!

Funny Funny...the more I break down DaRaidahs roster and draft...lmao...they are going to scipe the top tier players from jerry and the yes men....

Jermaine..you see..that's the difference between me and you....I know football and talent eval like the back of my hand....and you know pom pons....who's the b@#$???...back of my hand?

go play or something

Grossman signed so quickly because nobody wanted him ...he's not an NFL QB....he won't be in the league...two years...book it....but hey..he's taking the money and running...I don't blame him....but still...unfortunately...we are stuck with the idiots who gave him that money

and lol....culzie.. I left balls out there dangling for ya...

Culzie I understand how you feel - I had to stand alone and say Wallace was being misjudged. Stand by your man, but don't get mad at everyone else. Wallace had a double double yesterday... And for all of our sakes, I trully hope Rex steps up. I am not mad at the signing or hate the guy. I am a Bear fan first. But I do hate what he did in the past. You are on your own for the rest of that.

BORN AND RAISED BEARS FANS FOR LIFE...

BARBFFLS?

I dont know....how about "The Pit Vipers"?

Hitman: As usual you are DA-MAN! Nothing wrong with telling it like it is.
Hey Jermaine: The reason he didn't go anywhere else is because NOBODY WANTED HIM! Why do you think he got screwed by JA. They had him over a Barrel.

William R: You make some good points. I don't think anyone dislikes T. Rex personally,( he's probably a decent guy) they just think he SUCKS as a QB!

Maybe if Da Bears had a running game and an offensive line that could block, I would start there. Even if we had Brady, he would look terrible since only Olin and Tait can block. Benson is a terrible, he could find the hole in a wet paper sack!

thank you, kman

and nah....the only person who probably hates Rex personally is the poor bas%$# who tries to buy the same shoes Rex just bought.. and finds there are only two right ones remaining

Julie - I am dying laughing! Now Julie has been all-in with you guys on everything including the fantasy football stuff. Culzie you finally found a way to alienate Julie, now that officially makes the name of your group the Homo-Rex-uals!!!!

Hey, we're just Rex-Roasters.

Someone has to do it and he's such an easy target.

Culzie, Julie B, Jermaine and all the other "Rex Bandwagon Banditos," I'm hoping Rex will prove me wrong -- like Bradshaw did to Hollywood Henderson and the Cowboys ("Bradshaw couldn't spell 'Cat' if you spotted him the 'C' and the 'a'"). In fact, I would love to be proved wrong about Grossman. After playing and watching football for nearly 40 years, I just don't see anything special about Rex. And I don't think he will prove me wrong.

What's so special about Kyle you may ask (and I'm sure you are)? Not much -- other than he wins. And he won as a Rookie under intense scrutiny, when nobody gave a crap whether he did or didn't. I admire that.

Rex has had everything handed to him, and like the snap of the ball, he has fumbled it. I can't bear (sorry for the pun) watching another empty stare and shrug of the shoulders as he wanders off the field after another fumble, another interception or another blown read. It drives me nuts. No emotion. No focus. Perhaps nothing between the ears. Rex seems to wander aimlessly through season after season. Perhaps the Bears tolerate that. I don't.

Kyle may not throw the best ball. He may have the ugliest facial hair in pro sports, but to paraphrase Al Davis (okay, a Raiders reference for the Hitman), he just wins, baby. And he wins facing huge mountains of doubt.

Yes, Rex has a winning record, but his hand has always been stacked with all the opptys and the Bears best talent. Yet, he continues to fumble!!!!

Time for Kyle.

After all, Kyle is our quarterback... do dah, do dah....

Rickey sez: "i think Rex has a better arm then KO. Anyways, did you see the combine results? Mendenhall tore it up, 4.4 40 with 26 reps. I bet he goes top ten now which is good for him but bad for the Bears."

How is this bad for the Bears?

Do you mean that it's bad because it prevents them from squandering yet another 30 or 40 million dollars on the running back position?

Good (read: servicable) running backs are a dime a dozen, and their shelf life is awfully short. Most successful teams today have GM's that are proficient at finding diamonds in the rough, and rarely overpay at this position.

You can pay through the nose for your "three yards, and a cloud of dust" or you can find those exact same stats on the waiver wire.

Good game / bad game ... same price.

Can anyone say, Rashan Salam, Curtis Enis, and Cedric Bensen?

Keep Mendenhall, and give me a stud offensive lineman instead.

what?

Listen,

I'm not a Rex Grossman fan. I am a Chicago Bear fan. To me, he is an alright QB. Sometimes he plays well; sometimes he plays horrible. And Then other times he plays just okay. Whatever way he plays, I acknowledge that point. And those that have been posting here for a while knows that I am fair with my opinions. What kills me is when people just bashes the guy just because it seems like the cool thing to do. I would defend any player on the team who just gets killed by the media and fans unfairly, whether it be Rex, Olin, or whoever. So you guys can post what you want, Im not gonna change. Im sorry. I personally think that with the way Kyle has played towards the end of the season, its his job to lose. But if he gets beat out I'll support Rex. It doesn't matter to me as long as they win. I don't see myself as the coach, or some talent scout or anything like that. I'm just a fan of this team.

just listen to yourslves! All you do is bash Rex and say that he sucks, then turn around and say "I don't hate Rex."(Hitman, you are the only true soul-let's hope Kyle gets to sit back in shotgun.) YES, you do hate Rex............Then there are people who say "I am not pro-Rex"...YES, you are pro-Rex Bculz. When you stop being ashamed in admitting it..........although.....every post until now was pro-Rex.....then you can share the glory with me next Feb.
Julie....season tickets? That makes you hot(from cute)....despite your hairy legs, and the fact that you use words like 'shenanigans'.

Jermaine...now you know how Obama feels when Hilary's hit squad machine can't use facts, they just go for the personal attacks!!

Stuck...thanks, but Ill make my own feelings known, I dont need you to muck them up.

I am not like a REX-O-PHILE

I think he is short...has small hands and is too chubby cheeky at times...

But...just like FoxNews gets labled FAR RIGHT...in a world where the LEFT is the Middle.

I too I guess will wear the lable of Rex Lover...in a world of Haters.

Point is...

I would love a 6'3 - power armed Stud - who can run and break tackles with ease...of course I would.

I would trade Rex in a second for a chance at that.

But when you were all crying for Griese and Orton...

I was one of the FEW....who said it was a BAD CALL.

Me, Chuck, Jermaine....

Thats a solid Triumph ret (points?)! if I hav ever seen one...

thanks stuck...you call a couch a davenport...makes me think of my grandpa..and for that alone I dig ya....Kyle wins this competition easily, tho...Man vs boy

Seedy...Al Davis.. HOF ..Commitment to Excellence ...Rob Ryan..my favorite coach...

I hope the combine was as good for you all as it was for me
60 days and 59 minutes til the 2008 NFL draft

PitViperBC:

You may have been one of the few, but as Spock says:

Kyle is our quarterback. do dah, do dah

All this banter back and forth and the entire point was skipped around but never truly nailed. The players only play the hands they are dealt, either by their own talent limitations or the expectations of the team that drafts or signs them. I donot blame Grossman for being short, having happy feet, poor downfield vision and can't make a decision. I can't blame Rex from having dinosaurs for offensive linemen, they didn't get old all of a sudden. I can't blame Rex for drafting a college running back who was a product of the system he came from and not a real pro. I can't blame Rex for wide recievers who can't seperate or catch it when they do. None of that is Rex Groosman's fault he is what he is. Blame Jerry(I don't know)Angelo and Lackluster Lovie they drafted and put this crap together and unless they are totally blind all the above is on them. They drafted this short skiddish QB, they allowed this OL to get old without addressing it, they drafted a running back who didn't belong in the NFL and traded one who proved he did they(Jerry&Lovie) are the ones who kept putting those WR's on the field and leaving Mike Haas and Mark Bradley either inactive or on the bench. They even used a failed tackle(St.Clair) as a guard when Beekman and Andrews could have been evaluated. So put the blame were it belongs on the lousy management. Groosman is not a professional QB thats not his fault they keep putting him out there if someone would give you a few million dollars you would stand out there and fumble snaps and throw interceptions too but at least they could protect and give you someone to hand the ball off to or throw it to, ya think?

The Man the Myth the Legend Kyle Orton
A man who can drink a bottle of Jack Daniels in one sitting
A man who doesn't shave for months at time
A man's man
A man's quaterback

All kidding aside I have never fully understood the raw deal given to Kyle Orton. He started as a rookie, a task not given to even the top draft picks. Almost no rookie QB starts the majority of their games especially on a team that makes the playoffs. Kyle Orton didn't light the world on fire that year, but he won games. As for his stats it is extremely difficult to put up good numbers when the game plan is always 1st down run, 2nd down run, 3rd and long pass. The defense may pass is coming. He didnt throw away games that year, he won them. And last year he looked fine. Obviously he's not a Pro Bowler but he has every tool that Rex has and enough talent that a coordinator should be able to create a mediocre to good offense, which right now is all the Bears can hope for. They need to be able to make long sustained drives, keep the ball and not give up field postion so the defense has a chance to stay fresh and be at peak effectivness when they are on the field.

Ok Rex has been a nightmare. Actually the whole Bears offense is horrifying. What scares me to death though, is the fact that Ron Turner is still here. It is beyond me how this bonehead is still calling plays. You could argue that the Bears don't have much talent on offense. So what do the Bears do? Nothing absolutely nothing they bring back the same sorry cast while parting ways with a couple of washed up vets. We have three running backs that can't even carry Thomas Jones' jock strap. I know he is no stud either, but still why bring back Benson. At receiver you got Berrian who is a number three receiver on a lot of teams NOT a two. Not to mension an offensive line who can't block a tackling dummy. This is the NFL you have no idea what you get in the draft. So filling wholes through the draft is a lame attempt by Angelo and the cheapskate Bears. If you thought that offense was hard to watch in the past "wait til next year"

.

Seedy, I believe it was Emmanuel Kant's "greatest good, for the greatest amount of people" principle that I think you are speaking to, but....that doesnt really apply to this situation.

Its what best for the tribe, not what's best for the Mob. YOU AND I are not part of the TRIBE (the bears team), you like to think we are, but were part of the MOB.

I bet we take Andre' Woodsen in the draft.

it should be obvious that REX is a true soldier, because after all of the CRAP that he has been through in this city, he actually WANTS to come back!!!!

Posted by: chris willete | February 24, 2008 12:53 PM

Nope Chris it just displays nobody else wanted him nor were the Bears willing to take a chance on someone else. I do comprehend Rex knows the offensive system already, so re-signing him instead of bringing in a new guy (which one, I am not sure), was not that big of a decision to make.

Also, he didn't want to come back! Nobody wanted him! Now lets pray Kyle Orton finally gets the same support week in and week out or simply THROW...(oh hell we can't be throwing anything at a plasma TV)...that's too expensive, if the team bottoms out again.

Jack sez: "So filling wholes through the draft is a lame attempt by Angelo and the cheapskate Bears. If you thought that offense was hard to watch in the past "wait til next year".

You hit that nail, Jack.

Neither one of these guys are quick enough on their feet, or between their ears to make up for their obvious shortcomings.

Grossman's only saving grace is that he can heave it 60 or 70 yards downfield, so that when the ball is intercepted it works out for us better than a Brad Maynard punt.

But even if they were top shelf QB's, who do they have to throw it to? A trio of decent tight ends, and a part time wide-out who's service is needed more on kickoffs and punt returns?

Bensen sure as Hell can't catch the ball, or block for anyone else who might be able to. AP tries hard, but the only reason he sees playing time is because he's good at catching dump-off passes, and blocks better than Bensen.

And our running game? Almost non-existent last year. Where's the hope that it's suddenly gotten better, and what is that hope based upon?

Factor in that neither Grossman or Orton can run, and you have one heck of an immobile backfield.

Don't even get me started on the O-Line.

No ... I don't see much reason for hope on the offensive side of the ball this year.

PVBC, I also made my feelings known about our backups. Remember my blogument (that's blog argument, feel free to use it) with Rebecka about Griese? Ahhh, the good ol' days. And no, you aren't part of the Tribe, like me. But only Jews understand that one. C'mon - someone pick a fight with me! I'm bored over here!

Also, I'm not sure if I should be flattered or scared that Stuck now thinks I'm hot. And I can't remember why he thinks I have hairy legs. That's okay, don't remind me.

Seedy's back from a long long break, do dah, do dah. I missed him cuz he likes me, do dah do dah.

How does anyone have a conversation about Grossman or the Bears problems in general, without mentioning how lost Ron Turner is? could he be the poorest OC in the league? Rex's shortcomings start with the lame game plan he has every week.

sorry - I missed the Ron Turner references. get that guy out of here!!!!

Is there anything in particular that you'd like to fight about?

Centigrade vs Farenheit?

Which wine goes best with Chateau Briand?

Perhaps we could argue about bio-nuclear-para-psychology, or quantum physics.

The possibilities are endless.

I don't know Mark. I just assumed the Huckleberry would bring his own fight to the party. I wasn't anticipating being able to choose the topic. Debates around my house usually center around TV or which princess is your favorite. And to that I'd have to say Ariel, but it's probably a fish thing, considering I'm a Pisces.

Mark..I think you missed it..it was her comment about being a part of the tribe.

Im an honorary member, ive been to over 50 bat or bar mitzfas

I will agree you are founding member as well J.

Wow, a lot of snakes out here. Isn't it Emmanuel Kent?

Nonetheless, I like sticking with the famous sources (e.g., Spock, Sydney Friedman of M*A*S*H, et al).

PVJB -- Sorry, but the hairy legs are a huge turnoff. I'm a roadie and my pistons have to stay silky smooth. So do my women's. Btw, how does Stuck know so much about you? Is that from the 80s skater babe, pre-yoga diva days? Perhaps a little too much time spent north of the border?

I think the Rex situation can best be summed up by Hawkeye Pierce, who was known to say, "Time wounds all heals."

Or, as Sydney Friedman would say, "Ladies and gentlemen take my advice. Pull down your pants and slide on the ice."

Given the weather in Chicago, now's a good time to just that.

Julie sez: "I don't know Mark. I just assumed the Huckleberry would bring his own fight to the party. I wasn't anticipating being able to choose the topic."

It's the anticipation that really makes the party interesting.

But once you finally arrive, and realize that the evening's entertainment is someone like 'culzie; wearing a lampshade, and telling "Farmer's Daughter" jokes ... well, it's all downhill from there.

No Mongoosed, Stuck just thinks I have hairy legs, but I don't know why. I always talk about the benefits of waxing, especially in regards to Rex Grossman. I also have perfectly pedicured toes at all times, given my profession. Now your image of me is fixed, right? Anyway, I thought you'd like my do dahs.

BC, just attending bar mitzvah's doesn't make you an honorary member of the tribe. You have to be anointed by an actual member, so Mazel Tov! Consider yourself anointed.

Umm...more like the guy in the back room breaking out some of the finest glacoma medicine known to man.

Indeed it does; but do you know why a hummingbird hums?

I saw that the Pats released Rosie Colvin today. I wonder if the Bears would be interested in signing him again? He is still a good player but the question is; would he fit with the current system? He's more of a pass rushing linebacker with limited coverage skills. In any rate I'd still love to see him back. Especially with the way things are looking with Briggs. What do you guys think about that?

Because it doesn't know the words.

I think it's the sound of their wings flapping around so fast, right? Or their humming Bear Down.

Roman responds: "Their"???

Did y'all hear? Colvin just got dumped from the Patriots. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Dream team! (ha ha)

Shut up Roman - that makes sense. As in, "the wing-flapping is due to their humming of Bear Down." I wasn't saying "they are humming." You're just mad because I said I wanted Ricky back, but now I changed my mind again. You both suck at posting all my comments.

You can call me Pit Vipress from now on, in case you haven't heard.

Lets get um!!

been a bear fan for 65 years, love to listen to Janiak on the radio, but i will sit out the 2008 season,
i am thoroughly convinced that keeping Grossman will destroy Bear chances by game 4 of the season.

Bears are Great, but coach and management are Nuts!

Jewels - you were looking for a fight - and you have Grossman and Culzie. Just too easy. You just didnt want it bad enough.
