Dempster predicts Series title
I don't blame anyone for predicting his team will win, but still, considering the Cubs are facing the 100-year anniversary of their last World Series title, Ryan Dempster must have known he would cause a stir.
If Dempster can help back up that prediction, more power to him. But he should ask Carlos Zambrano about the wisdom of such a lofty goal.
Dempster should worry more about being consistent this season.
Do you like his bravado?

This is absolutely what i like to hear why shouldn't he be confident the only for us to succeed is to sctually believe you can do it. Let us hope his pitching is as strong as his words!

Is Ryan Dempster anyone important? I mean......as a Sox fan it would be like John Danks saying the same thing, and last I checked John Danks isn't anyone. Maybe he should worry more about his promotion to the starting rotation than saying something so stupid.

DA $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ HAS BEEN SPENT NOW DUE THE WORK CUBBIES WE STILL BELIEVE.

Ryan Dempster with a 4.75 era as a reliever just garaunteed the CUbs would win the WS. Cubs fans could not stand to see him pitch 1 inning now they have to watch him pitch 6 innnigs and his era baloon to 6. That would be like Victor Kryahpa garaunteeing the Bulls win the NBA Championship.

I think Dempster should be tested for mind-altering drugs immediately.
If he tests positive, I want whatever it is he's taking.

Carl, they're in Arizona...probably peyote

Pitchers and catchers reported today, so I'll wait another week or so before saying, "Wait 'till next year."

I've been hoping for over 45 years and this year you never know, they might just do it

Well, he might be right. That is, if the following things happen: the Cubs acquire Brian Roberts, and thereby are able to move Soriano down to 5 or 6, where his low OBP isn't in the way and his home runs can occur with someone on base; Kerry Wood or Carlos Marmol solidifies in the closer role and looks as good as he did at the end of last year, thereby averting the disaster of Bob Howry in the ninth, who can only throw fastballs and will eventually get them hammered once the scouting report is out; the Cubs either acquire another top-flight starter sometime during the season who can hold his own with Zambrano against other teams' one-two punches (Mets, D'Backs, Padres, Red Sox, etc.), because Ted Lilly doesn't have the stuff to compete at the very highest level, though he's solid for most purposes, or Rich Hill reaches peak potential and holds steady all year long, in which case he can probably fill that role. In other words, with a leadoff man, a dependable closer (Wood is ideal if healthy--did you see him in the last month of '07?) and another 1 or 1A starter, either from outside or internally, they can definitely do it. American League bias is way out of control: with a Roberts-type leadoff man and the benefit of the DH, I would put the Cubs up against anyone, Tigers included. With the missing pieces in place, they can overpower anyone.

I expect them to be one of the top teams maybe even the best in the NL. I don't think the Johan deal makes the Mets instant champions of anything. You have to play the season first. That being said Dempster's prediction could come true or not. It least he has the confidence to say that. He's probably fifth in the rotation!Last year's prediction of CY young could come true for one of our pitchers this year. I think it could be a great year for the cubs. Possible pennant? 90+wins. I think so. Don't say I'm jinxin them. Us cub fans have to be confident. There is no curse it's just that a team needs to play well and get a few breaks. That hasn't happened the past 100 years. Like the Red Sox look at them ,a possible dynasty?

Cubs on paper should be contenders. But unfortunately they atually have to play the games .Will a century of coming up short end? Its ironic allot depends on how well Dempster can close games.Something he didn't make look easy last season.

100 years. All I gotta say...kid, shut up and play. This is not Madden.
Bet he's better than Devin Hester, too!!!!

Ernie Banks used to make his little predictions every year..."The Cubs will shine in 69"....sound familiar? So what's wrong with Dempster having a positive attitude to begin training camp? Or maybe he's taking an enhancer that will only work in Wrigley Field, goat's milk?

I'll only believe him if he sees the same psychic as Plaxico Burress.

At this point, the odds are with him. 100 chances. Thats a lot of baseball.

Demspter is just giving a prediction, albeit an uncertain one. Maybe he oughta change his profession to fortuneteller or psychic. See if it works better, which I doubt. Let the dreamer dream.

Talk, as always, is cheap. Actions speak louder than words. Open mouth, insert foot. And add any other cliches you can think of. Still, such optimistic predictions are like prayer--can't hurt, might help.

Everyone is making way too big a deal out of this, and you, Roman, are exacerbating the problem by encouraging people to talk about it. Ask any player on any divisional contender who he predicts will win the World Series and that player better, for the sake of saving face with his organization, predict the team he plays for. Who do you think Torii Hunter publicly predicts will win the World Series? How about Eric Byrnes? Pedro Martinez? Mike Lowell?
Lets post about something relevant next time, hmmm?

Dempster needs to be tested for LSD, but unfortunately, I don't believe there's a reliable test for that particular hallucinogen.
Well, at least there wasn't back in the 60's. Not that I'd know anything about that ... of course.

How are the Cubs better than the Mets,Rockies, D'backs, Phillies and of course the team who is always in contention, the Cards. I like his bravado, but I just don't see it.
And of course they would have to beat the team that makes it from the A.L.
Posted by: kman | February 14, 2008 05:46 PM
I see Ryan is off the wagon again.
Hey, Plaxico Burrass predicted the Giants win (okay, so did I). Of course, that was only one game.
I'm sure by the end of May when Dempster is trying to earn a spot in middle relief, he will have plenty of time to reflect on how the Cubs' season could go so wrong, so quickly.
Btw, isn't Aramis Ramirez' nickname "Fighting Cock"? Now we know why (and here I thought it had a completely different meaning)

A good hen says, "cock-a-doodle-do".
And we all know what a bad hen says.
