Saturday NFL picks
Green Bay Packers (-7.5) over Seattle Seahawks
This game will be built up as a Favre vs. his former mentor Mike Holmgren, but whenever these two teams hookup, I can only think of one thing: “We want the ball and we’re gonna score.” Matt Hasselbeck returns to the scene of the crime for his first postseason appearance in Green Bay since uttering those famous words, and has quietly put together an awfully impressive season. Hasselbeck has been so good, in fact, that if Shaun Alexander hadn’t morphed into a poor man’s Anthony ‘the A-Train’ Thomas this season, it’d be enough for me to go with Seattle. ESPN’s Bill Simmons may have summed up Alexander best:
To poor Shaun Alexander, who caused me to write in my notebook, "How small would a tackler have to be for Alexander to break his tackle? 140 pounds? 150 pounds? POSSIBLE ESPN REALITY SHOW!"
I’m sorry, but if you can’t run the ball, you aren’t going to win a playoff game in Green Bay. It’s that simple.
New England Patriots (-13) over Jacksonville Jaguars
The Patriots are going to win the Super Bowl. If you’ve watched football this year, you probably already knew that. I expect that Pats to win two blowouts, and have one really close game on their path to 19-0, so the trick will be to figure out who matches up best with them. Unfortunately, I don’t think that team is the Jags. Even if Jacksonville did have a chance, they certainly don’t anymore after Paul Spicer’s comments, and whole website-asterisk fiasco. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a complete beat down (remember what happened after Pittsburgh’s Anthony Smith talked smack) as New England gears up for a tougher road ahead.

Comments
Seattle is not going to lay down but Green Bay should prevail at home. But I don't think New England will cover those 13 points. Jacksonville is yet another tough test. I don't know about the Dolphins, but I don't recall another team taking a tougher road to the championship game than NE this year. They have to go through the Jaguars and then the Colts - and if they survive I expect the Pack or Giants to be waiting for them in the Superbowl.

Ryan Grant and Wes Welker.
All talk today will surround Favre and Brady, but these two overachievers will be the difference.
While the whole world knows Seattle has no running game (Shaun, where'd ya go), the Seahawks defense is no walkover by any stretch of the imagination. Problem is, their passing game is THE OFFENSE and the Green Bay corners are solid.
Brett 'Energizer' Favre can be as inconsistant as Chicago weather, and that always gives the other team a heartbeat, but he can also be 'crazy on target' and once you get this guys juices flowin' he's a young spark all over again. Green Bay 'D' is solid all around, nuf said.
If Favre has a bad day, Hasselbeck gets time to throw (with abundance to the backs and tight ends), and field position favors Seattle for most of the game, the Seahawks could win. Just too many 'if' factors.
Ryan Grant has to be one of the biggest surprises in the N.F.L. this year. Kid is NO FLUKE. Any back who has a second gear like this guy has to finally be taken seriously. He seems to break at least one big one every game and today will be no exception. Two monstrous runs by R.G. help relax Favre into a solid game and give Pack convincing win.
While in New England, all eyes will be on Tom Brady, my sights will be on David Garrard. This guy holds all the keys for the Jags. Taylor and Jones-Drew should have no trouble with the New England linebackers. Matter of fact, if they run roughshod thru the Pat 'D' all day, I won't be one bit surprised. Now, if New England decides to stack the box to force Garrard to beat em', then the game takes an about face.
New England has shown signs of being mortal the last five weeks or so, but I have a funny feeling Billy Check may have just been stashing half the playbook in that time. If the Jags don't come in at full strength on the 'D' line, it's over. Give Brady time to throw and you'll see first hand what a surgeon can do. If the Pats go up big early it neutralizes Jacksonvilles only hope, ball control with the running game, set, match.
Ball control, pressure on the Q.B., and a whole lotta luck are needed in the Jacksonville corner, but I've seen stranger things happen.
If it were up to me, I'd throw to Mr. Welker at least 15 times today. The Jags have no safety or dime package that can slow these hands down. Double team that area and, "Hello Mr. Moss, how's the weather today?".

The Packers are extremely overrated. Seattle will win this one easily. Remember, Indy's running D didn't really show up last year until the playoffs. I think you will see the same with Seattle's running O. Gotta love Grant though. In the end the 'old man' will throw one too many picks. As usual. Thanks for squashing Dan Marino though. At least we don't have a jerk with all the records.
Jacksonville will not beat the Patriots, and I really hope Jethro Clampet gets pasted by the Colts. The Cowboys will be exposed as the fakes that they are. I would like to think that if Indy doesn't knock off the Pat's, then Seattle or N.Y. can do it.
What does it really mean to go undefeated in the regular season and not win a superbowl? We should start a fund to buy Tom Brady a real pro-football helmet. Why does he wear that thing he wears?
It must have something to do with how they cheat. Why would you want 6" of the back of your head exposed?

I say Favre won't have more than one pick this game.

uuuuuuuuuggggggggggggggg..
well my premonitions held up for the first two minutes of the Packers game. I always get the first number of the lottery right.
My wife says I am good for the first three minutes. You should have stopped reading my post by now as you can tell nothing accurate will follow.

Just read Mariotti's latest rant.
I like your blog, but if the only way to rid this world of Jay's incessant negativity is for the Sun Times to go bankrupt (as is rumored) then I can live with the collateral damage.

Mark you are correct. When I get disgusted with Jay, I always tell myself this magic phrase: "it could be worse, we could be stuck with Sam Smith." Then, I am not angry anymore.

Stuck sez: "When I get disgusted with Jay, I always tell myself this magic phrase: "it could be worse, we could be stuck with Sam Smith." Then, I am not angry anymore."
The one I miss is Bernie Lincicomb; that guy could write.
And while Bernie wasn't exactly Mr. Sunshine either, he tossed his barbs and shot his arrows with a lot more style than Jay. His sense of humor was acerbic and sardonic, while Mariotti's is simply sophomoric.

so... let me get this straight.
Bears waste 4th pick on no moves, no vision Cedric Benson.
Packers get the Giants FIFTH running back, off their practice squad, and this guy clearly has more talent and ability than Ced will ever have.
He will be a top 5 pick in fantasy drafts next year.
what is wrong with this picture?
what does it say about NFL scouting as a whole?
