NFL picks: championship week

BY RICKY O'DONNELL

Kind of an anticlimatic championship week, no? But while everyone wanted to see Colts/Pats and Packers/Cowboys this week, we may be left with two even more interesting matchups.

Since both these games are on Sunday, I’ll just leave this post up until I check in on Monday. I finished an unimpressive 2-2 last week, and I think these games could be even more difficult to choose in this round. To the games…

San Diego Chargers +14 over New England Patriots

Respected and valued commenter Julie B. submitted a little challenge last week:

The Patriots are gonna destroy the Chargers, especially if Rivers and Tomlinson are out. Even if they play, I don't think it's going to be very close. And in case you do want to sound like the Village Idiot, pick the Chargers straight up.

I’d love to accept it, trust me, I would.

The Chargers are a loaded team that is playing perfect right now. I mean, they beat the Colts without the league’s best player and their starting quarterback for much of the second half. If Tomlinson, Rivers, and Gates were 100%, I may just be tempted to pick the Chargers straight up. Unfortunately all three are nicked up, and Rivers is doubtful, so taking San Diego without the points would be asinine. But that doesn’t mean they are going to get blown out.

I actually think the Chargers believe they are better then New England, which will be something new for the Patriots. After they won their first three games by a score of 114-21, everyone has been playing the Pats in fear. That won’t happen this Sunday, as the Chargers are just as brash and confident as New England. Both of these teams are truly unlikable, but I kind of root for San Diego for some reason. Their arrogance just crosses so far over the line that I find them assuming. Did you hear Olshansky last week?:

Reporter: So what do you think of playing the Patriots next week?
Olshansky: Who? New England?

Only a guy named Igor could say something like that and still be cool. Really, isn’t Tomlinson too classy of a dude to be on a team like San Diego? The rest of the team looks like they’d make a great group of pirates, but LT doesn’t stoop down to their level of tomfoolery. I can imagine Merriman, Shaun Phillips, Cromartie, and Rivers pillaging villages, wearing eye patches, and incinerating buildings, but not LT. He’s one solid dude.

Green Bay Packers -7 over New York Giants

I don’t know if this is the prevailing feeling, but I find the Giants fascinating. They only do one thing really well (rush the passer), and seemingly the entire team loathes the head coach and doesn’t have confidence in the quarterback. To boot, their best offensive player (Plexiglas Burress) didn’t even practice all season, and still wound up with over 1,000 yards receiving and scored twelve touchdowns. I feel if the Bears pulled such shenanigans they would finish 0-16, but here are the Giants, on the doorstep of the Super Bowl.

Alas, their journey ends at the hands of Brett Favre. My thoughts on good ole’ #4 are well documented, but it looks like he’ll be playing on Super Sunday. One more note on the Packers: I was trying to think of who Ryan Grant reminds me of, and then it hit me: Anthony Thomas. There is no way Grant is going to be this good again next year, just as the A-Train was really only good his rookie season in 2001 when the Bears went 13-3. Just thought I’d let you know.

Thanks for starting a blog! Chargers will cover. I think they beat a good Colts team who were affraid of the Patriots. Colts let me down and ruined the REAL Superbowl. Cant believe the Bears lost to those yella bellies! Patriots are going to win though, but I think it will be a close shave at home. I am pulling for the PERFECT PATS. 17-0 BABY!!!!!! The Brady Bunch!

That "Plexiglass Burress" is FRESH! Giants are also for real. Cold will not intimidate them, and that defensive line is going to cause some problems for Farve. I smell an upset. Somethin don't feel right in mojo land. Julie is probably cringing at that last sentence. I like old man Farve like everyone else but the Giants make it happen somehow when they get to the playoffs. I will be happy either way.

2 weak teams....in the weakest conference in football...it's going to be bo-ring.....yes I am talking about the Chargers and Patriots.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GIIIIIIIIIIIIIIANTS.

..............and stop kissing Julies butt to get on her good side. You are supposed to be the moderator. If you think she is weak...then that's how it will be. No flip-flopping just because she lambasted you. She doesn't even sound cute.

It would be nice to have the Pack beat the gIANTS AND then play the Pats in the SuperBowl and LOSE and then get the curse of the SuperBowl Loser lifted off us and yolked on them!!!

Would love to see Sproles and Turner get some time against N.E. Besides a strong showing by Volek, these two 'Shadows' really hurt the Colts.

Can't see Brady throwing two picks in the Red Zone to go along with a convenient fumble, ala Indy, but the cold weather can leave this game open to anything.

N.E. 27, S.D. 23.

N.Y. Giant defensive line won the last game, but the frozen tundra is one hell of a neutralizer. Manning will throw at least ONE pass backwards and Brett will throw at least TWO without looking.

Ryan Grant, once again!

G.B. 31, N.Y.G. 20.

found the fix book.

San Diego/Giants ...these teams cover.... they are the better teams as well....but

Enjoy NE and GB in the Superbowl....I don't watch the Superbowl much if at all anymore

Talking about talent/schemes is more my thing... trying to guess the spread on a sport that's rigged isn't even fun with your money...

ok, that's a lie...betting others' money rocks...I love it...Hey, if you don't think it's rigged...I'll hold your cane and your dog while you reach for your wallet...

I picked the Chargers to win the Super bowl before the season started, and I'm sticking with my pick.

I also like the Packers over the Giants. Packer's defense has been playing terrific, and if Ryan Grant keeps it up, he should be on track for a big day.

With the weather conditions in both places seriously consider the Point Spread before making a decision ( an hour before Gametime) and take it from there. Picking straigt up, go with the Homies.

Thanks, Rickster. Everyone likes to start off their day with a little ass-kiss now and then! Actually, I don't think you meant to do that, just a clever attempt at getting me to read your entire post. Good job - it worked. Putting my name in bold will get you points every time. And I do keep track of points, as everyone knows.

Stuck, you don't think I sound cute? Well gee, now I feel so hurt. (Hey Keith, stuck must have missed the mini-skirt discussion from my trip to Bourbonnais, right?) You're probably right though. I mean, compared to those cheese-eatin', beer-drinkin' babes you have up there....... I've seen 'em - I've been to the Rock County 4-H Fair!

Why is the NFL America's Top sport? Because the regular season MEANs something! There is no better home field advantage than the NFL & that is why you'd have to be crazy to bet against the homers this weekend. Chargers don't know what below freezing means & the Giants are too soft defensively to stop Farve in GB.

Only in the NBA would a team some 20 gb of the conference leader dream of making the playoffs. Even the NHL has more respect for it's post season than that. Of course a division winner in MLB having just 85 wins takes the cake.

More Tom Brady close-ups, please!!!!!!!

Has anyone seen the episode when Marcia gets hit in the face with the football and nobody likes her? Or how about the one where Marcia's boyfriend only likes her because he wants her to steal the football playbook from Greg? The Brady Bunch does not have a good history with footballs, I think the trend continues.

Bolts over Pats by a field goal

As much as I hate the Packers, I hate the Giants more so.....

Packers crush the Giants like BJ crushed Daddy.

Chargers 34 Pats 31
Packers 44 Giants 10 (seven during garbage time)

Jewels - you had me at miniskirt... uhmph...

Kris sez: "I picked the Chargers to win the Super bowl before the season started, and I'm sticking with my pick."

In your defence, you didn't say which year.

Julie sez: "(Hey Keith, stuck must have missed the mini-skirt discussion from my trip to Bourbonnais, right?) You're probably right though. I mean, compared to those cheese-eatin', beer-drinkin' babes you have up there....... I've seen 'em - I've been to the Rock County 4-H Fair!"

They do grow 'em kinda big in Cheeseland.

I believe the PC term is "Thicker Girls", although they're still just "fat" to me.

Still...it's better than "catching a glimpse of a south side beauty" .. HA ...I'll never forget that one Bculz. If you can get over the root'n tootn' accent and the way they talk...goshers these heffers aint so bad. They can cook .

Exactly Mark Villano!

Chargers in 2032!

Tom Coughlin has the reddest face I've ever seen since Ditka.

Ricky responds: I was thinking the exact same thing...

Anyone care to doubt the power of the nfl 'fixbook'? I added the scores myself. Congratulations to the Giants of New Jersey. 2008 Superbowl champions.

I hope they both loose

Favre pick a bad day to look like a wash up vet who should retire. His failures to move the offense along with the ints = Giants win. Now we have a unwatchable super bowl with hated Patriots versus a New York team enough written on that .

I believe it was Culzie who once called me a visionary.......... I won't point out the Village Idiot, but I'll give you a hint. He's from Rogers Park, and his name rhymes with Chris. Stuck, could you send him his award? Have one of your babes fashion a medal out of some cheddar or something.

And I thought Coughlin's face looked like he had Mike Shanahan disease. Ever notice the color of that guy's face? It's a purplish hue.

Happy MLK Day to Evan Meacham and the oh so great people of AZ who celebrate this holiday for the sole purpose of Superbowl...

OK..later today..I'm renting "Heidi"...and February 3rd..I'm having a party...and we're gonna view it...then Resevior Dogs...then Pure Payton...Then..whilst we're good and buzzed... The Breakfast Club

We'll dress up...I'm gonna be a John Bender

Hope my point spread curse helped someone out, btw..and to that someone...you're buying the booze for my party...and now.. you're invited...dress as Brian Johnson...(ie..bag in pants)

NY/NE...wow...ok..I get it..cram it down my throat some more....

Pregame Ceremonies.....
have commercial airlines do the fly-by...let Pat Tillman die for the 8th time...have another memorial...it's the least ya can do...he was murdered....(As Bender sings the Airborne Ranger song)

NO THANKS...
I'd rather follow PacMan into AZ strip clubs if it's all the same to you...Mike Tyson might be there....and DMX...ok, that party might be way better than mine...

But you won't get shot watching Heidi and roll playing The Breakfast Club...We can stand outside Glenbrook North HS, too

My Party is gonna be way better than the BaghdadBowl..... I'm breaking out Heidi..and instead of getting shot...we'll do 'em....jello shots, body shots, flaming shots, shotguns(Johnson?!)

Have a great week...

"I'm being honest, a#$@%*. I would expect you to know the difference."

Was some good football! I am not a betting man, but I could have paid all of my bills over these last two weekends! Giants have a shot, but the Patriots must finish this. Its ironic but I think the Patriots propelled the Giants into the superbowl. After they we toe to toe with the Patriots, they have been playing on another level. Um rootin for the Brady Bunch!

An Open Letter to Brett Favre:

Brett, dude, you let us down big time. You looked like a rookie -- locking onto receivers, not moving the ball around. Jeez, you looked worse than a rookie... you looked like... Rex Grossman.

Was Greg Jennings in the game? Do you remember him or were you only throwing to receivers named "Donald." Btw, that last throw of yours looked to be heading to another Donald because it had "Duck" written all over it.

Great job of forgetting your running game. Way to not use the play action pass. Ran a bootleg a few times and that looked successful, but then you forgot about it. Why it looked like you must have prepared to play the Giants the same way Dallas did -- which is to say, you weren't prepared.

I'm sure once you and the team watch film, you'll scratch your head wondering how your offense went so wrong against a team you should have dominated. Well, it started with you and went downhill from there.

I know it's tough to retire with your last throw a "pick," but leave the game now... today. You showed that after nearly two decades as a pro, you still are too stubborn to take what defenses give you in big games. Funny thing, Eli learned it and -- more importantly -- used it. Now he's in the big dance and you should be shuffling off to play bocci ball or shuffleboard.

It's Rodgers time now.

Adios

We enjoyed your career, but it's time to move on.

A good thing about Monday morning quarterbacks is they pick Sunday's winners really well. Believe it or not, I would have picked the ones who won. The comment about both games being boring did not hold up. Brady was off and gave the Chargers a chance, and the Packer/Giant game was anything but boring. How sweet it is for this Favre hater that he added to his interception record and doing so cost the Packers the game.

It's too bad for the Chargers that Turner didn't have the cojones to start Volek. I would have started the Big V and if he played poorly, then I would have put in Rivers. Watching Philip "old man" Rivers trying to navigate the Pats' rush was painful.

Well at least I was right about Brady getting picked three times. Every other prediction was a bust.

Julie-

So now I'm the village idiot for not correctly predicting the outcome of two professional football games? If that is all the criteria that you have involved then so be it.

Let's just say you better make sure all your future statements are valid and lucid from now cause' the gloves are off.

Seedy sez: "It's too bad for the Chargers that Turner didn't have the cojones to start Volek. I would have started the Big V and if he played poorly, then I would have put in Rivers. Watching Philip "old man" Rivers trying to navigate the Pats' rush was painful."

I don't know Seedy ... I thought Rivers played his heart out.

I'd attribute their inability to score in the red zone to the coach's cold feet as much as I would to the QB.

Perhaps Volek could have provided a spark; perhaps not. We'll never know. Without a haelthy LT they were handicapped from the start.

Paul sez: "How sweet it is for this Favre hater that he added to his interception record and doing so cost the Packers the game."

I'm curious Paul; why do you hate Farve?

I'm a Bears fan and I absolutely love it when we beat him; BUT!!! .....

... I do admire the guy. I respect his accomplishments, and the way he plays the game; which is usually ALL OUT. The man plays his heart out, and unlike Ben Wallace, he leaves it all on the field.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a closet Cheesehead, but I find it really hard to actually "hate" the guy.

Cade McNown I could hate.

Sorry, Kris. Nothing personal. What's a matter? Don't like cheddar? I'm kidding - a joke - ever hear of one? I had previously stated, and it was reiterated by Ricky in his post, that picking the Chargers straight up would be ridiculously stupid, and that proved to be correct on my part. That was the only criteria for my little challenge, and you said you picked the Chargers in the pre-season and were sticking to that. Right? That was it. You were the only one who did that, so winner-winner-chicken dinner my friend. BTW, erroneously picking the Packers over the Giants was a mistake made by all but about 5 people on earth, so don't feel too bad. Look at the bright side, at least we don't have to watch any sappy Brett Favre stories on the NFL network for the next 2 weeks. In the meantime, chillax man.

Me, I don't have to like Farve or his accomplishments to root against him. I hope he doesn't retire because he really hasn't beaten the BEARS when it mattered, in a while. Plus, the guy doesn't do much in the 2nd half of games since I don't know when. They keep putting up his stats for comebacks in the 4th quarter but how many times has he done that this year or last year? When he won against the BEARS in 2006 he scored in the first half but when we put ours scrubs in in the 2nd half he didn't score anything. Rooting for him isn't like rooting for Elway in his swan song. The guy won against us in his prime but is holding on for dear life against us now. Any team that couldn't beat the BEARS this year shouldn't even comtemplate going to the Super bowl. The Giants beat us regardless of the reasons why and they deserve to be the lambs to slaughter for the NFC this year. After all, they did beat America's Team at home.

Did Rivers play with a TORN ACL. If he did that one bad mother-shut yo mouth...

MV:

I hear you. It's just that with Rivers' physical limitations, he became even more of a drop back pocket passer with less of an ability to step up or move side to side. Volek might have been able to give the Pats defense different looks and made them think a little more -- rolling pockets, bootlegs, etc., etc. Not saying it would have changed the outcome, but I'm not sure what the Chargers had to lose. They know what they have in Rivers -- and he was even more immobile than before. Volek would have brought additional dimensions to an offense that clearly needed them.

And yes, I agree with you about the coach's cold feet. Just doesn't seem like having a "Turner" on the sidelines is a good thing.

WRD:

Playing with a torn ACL, if the truth, does make Rivers one tough guy. But I never doubted his toughness. Of course, it also made him one sitting duck.

Seedy...yes, Rivers should maybe have not have no have may have ok....what?.. started...or is it no? Volek shoulda played..

and wow....that no call on the leg whip...on an interception no less...was pretty special....watchin 'em spot the ball all night was kinda cute, too...

Yeah, Rivers is a tough guy but Volek shoulda played

MTurner trying to get the corner when they needed half a yard on the three?...I woulda fired the OCoordinator right there on the field for that one.. or Did the NFL call in that play?...

I guess it's not as bad as abandoning your unstoppable running game in the Superbowl so Thomas Jones wouldn't show up a wasted 4th pick in the entire draft who just fumbled and is faking an injury on the sideline..pouting...Only to have your other 1st round screw up realize he doesn't have the short and curlys to play QB...screamin all scared....fumbled snaps..well timed/predictable pick...ouch.. dabears?...ouch

The last two games of this Season.. we were still the best team in the NFC...ya guys ready to sing yet?...and don't forget...your 8's and 32's will be polishing your 20's this summer...DABEARS!!

Personally, I got the Senior Bowl on the 26th.. and my season is over...Maybe I'll go to Washington State... try and find BigFoot with my Steve Austin doll (ya look in the back of his head and it's like binoculars..very kul)...maybe bring plaster too... in case I get a footprint...wow...come back Joe..Come back...ok..just one more thing, tho

I'll get to climb trees

enjoy the 6 hour drool fest of cliche´s February 3rd if you so choose...

Football Lost....A Bears Fan's Rant

Rivers should have been praised for that. I know a QB that could have played the last two games for the Bears but didn't because he thought they would lose.

I wanted to see old Man Farve in the SB, but he went out the way he got in the playoffs...gunslangin. The man had NO running game, so he had to Sinatra. Gunslangin is great when its on, but when its not... Makes one talk about retirement. Which I hope he doesn't. Now the gunslanger in Chicago is ok to hate.

Giants didn't surprise me at ALL Jewels. Sumthin waz debinitlee wrong in mojoland. They are SCARY like that. Phil Simms and co. did the same thing. Just come out of nowhere. But the el stops in the SB. Patriots are a Borg-like collective functioning as one unit. You take away a weapon and they adapt, annihilate and decimate. "The Giants must prepare to be assimlated".

Hitman:

I hear you.

My posts to this blog are about done, too. Football season is fun. Watching the Bulls and the Cubs pulling a "Bears" this year will be fun, too. Okay, it's painful to watch the Bulls fall so far so quickly, but hey, it's the NBA. Lately, I would rather watch hockey. For the Cubs, man o man, the Cubs Fest really has those northsiders frothing at the mouth. Too bad, the Cubbies still don't have the grinder on their team who will get all of the mousse jelled pretty boys to play hard. Lou will rant. Carlos will steam. Derrick will break. Cubs will fall. Probably to 72 - 90, but still win the incredibly weak Central Division.

Good luck finding Sasquatch. I hear he likes honey, so keep a pot of it on your porch.

As Tigger, the Tiger, said, TTFN.

Can I ask a question? How is Eli such a 'different quarterback'? If his stats are anything comparable to Rex Grossman of last season, what makes him so 'different'? Did he do anything spectacular in the last playoff game? Was it a 5 TD game? That Giant defense really got after Favre for all the final minutes of the fourth quarter and overtime that I saw, but Eli did nothing, driving someone in field goal range then overshooting and undershooting your receivers in the closing minutes did not look 'Elwayesque'(is this even a word.)

They won so he is a different QB. WOW! Eli is in second place this year instead of Rex. His defense has played out of their minds the past few weeks, guess when you steal a victory on the road by a questionable overturned call, you feel destiny is on your side.

But destiny is wearing a Patriots jersey this year, no matter how you feel. Eli is still no better than Rex, or Romo, or Rivers, or any of a large handful of above average quarterback in the NFL. My prediction, he can't keep up with the Bradys of the world, and he never should have beaten the Pack, but I am glad there will be no cheesy Brett F. Stories all week on NFL Network as someone said earlier. Just wish free agency would start already, we need a RB.

By the way, the Colts have to be over the cap, don't they? Talk about cap management, they got about 50 players all signing 30 million dollar contracts, then they go out and get some of the best free agents. How do they do it, does a Debartalo run the Colts now?

From the very beginning I believed that the Chargers were going to win. These are the best-trained athletes in the world, any team in the league is capable of performing at the level of the Patriots; so I think that it's a bad bet to assume that any one team would be capable of performing a perfect season.

As far as the NFC; I rooted for the Packers until the end of first quarter- then the Giants really started to impress me (I like the Giants when Eli is playing at his best [no picks, excellent throws, pocket presence]). The Giants are going to win in Arizona. The Patriots cannot keep the ball away from Plaxico and Armani.

It's going to be an impressive game. The Giants are actually getting better at the end of the season, whereas we practically had to drag ourselves to the Superbowl last year. (I hope to see Favre around for the next three years.)
