The White Sox traded Class A first baseman Chris Carter for Arizona outfielder Carlos Quentin.
Quentin had left shoulder surgery in October, but a Sox source tells Chris De Luca that Quentin has a chance to be an every day corner outfielder.

I have to wonder if Quentin is worth a 20 year old prospect who tore the cover off the ball in Class A this year. On paper it looks like we acquired the D-Back's version of Brian Anderson.

Kenny is crazy if thinks this kid is anything more then a utility player.
Quentin was a top 30 prospect in 05 and 06 before tearing a labrum last year. At 25, he gives the Sox another good young player, who probably has as much upside as Fields. I like this move alot.
Despite some dope who said Chris Carter "tore the cover off the ball" (he is a DH in the minors, repeat: they already know he can't field, not even first base, and he strikes out a ton), there is nothing not to like about this trade. A good fourth outfielder and disaster plan everyday corner guy, not a negative thing about this trade.

Rowand watch:The Delaware Journal reported Philly & Rowand were close on $$ (10-12mil/yr) but apart on yrs (3 vs 5). They indicated the White Sox were unwilling to go 5 yrs as well. Rowand's camp says there are several teams (Rangers, Dodgers, Natl's, & Yankees) willing to go 5 yrs.
So much for that $80/6 rumor. It certainly looks like Rowand is waiting for either Philly or Chicago to offer a 5 yr deal. Kenny should step in & get it done. $55/5 for Rowand is reasonable.

If Kenny Williams thinks the fans will be fooled by 'hey, we've got talent on our big club and in the system enough to compete' after he spent all of October telling us 'we're going after big fish', he is committing the worst mistake possible. If Williams goes into 2008 repeating the same old White Sox mantra of 'we can compete with what we have. We can't afford more. Yada, yada, yada'. Offer Mr. Double-play a Konerko-type deal just because he had a career year in this market? I love Aaron Rowand, but that's nuts. Better to settle for Jones, you're sure to get a better deal, and only have to lock in for 1-2 years. Plus, Jones is going to have such a chip on his shoulder trying to prove he's not over the hill, he's probably sprinkling HGH on his Cheerios as we speak.

Good to see the genius Kenny Williams whip into action and land another injury-prone .230 hitter before the Yankees or Red Sox swooped in to steal him away. KW has quite a soft spot for underperformers. Of course, a .230 hitter would be an upgrade from The Slumber, er, Summer of '07.
Give Kenny some time... there might be a packaged deal in the future which may include Sweeney, Anderson, and possibly Uribe or Crede. This may be the guy who steps in to be the back up. Let's give Kenny the benefit of the doubt, he's a smart guy. Remember, LOTS of time till spring training. If there isn't a good product to take the field by March 31st, I'll be the first calling Kenny out.

Chris Carter had a shot to be the guy to replace Jim Thome after next season. I was big on him and excited to see him play. However, as many of you have correctly stated, he can't do anything in the field. Why the Diamondbacks want him to play in the DH-less NL is beyond me...but I guess they aren't satisfied enough with Conor Jackson's progress and want a back-up plan at 1B.
As for Quentin, his 2006 is very encouraging, posting a .280 EqA. The man has consistently been able to walk, but it seems like his power has not recovered from the injury.
If this move somehow means that Jerry Owens will no longer be consistently playing baseball for the White Sox, then I love it. I don't think Fields, Dye, or Quentin can handle CF, but then again, neither can Owens.
I think, however, that this is a good gamble for the Sox. If Quentin pans out, he's going to be a more valuable asset than Carter.
I agree with Dave,still early to get too down on GM Williams moves.Quentin before injury had allot of promise for Dbacks. Certainly not a big deal but won't hurt sox.Sox need to sign Rowand & pick up a starter plus at least one more quality reliever.
All these "experts" on this board seem to know a lot about Quentin--and if he produces they'll be the first in line to buy his jersey. Tsk,tsk. Do your homework- there are a lot of people who view this as a very good trade for the Sox. Need I remind you that the same people who were complaining over the '04-'05 winter all jumped the bandwagon the following summer. It's only the first day of the winter meetings . . . Bet on the Diamondbacks big in about three years, they will have what was the cream of the White Sox future hitting in the middle of their lineup (Young, Cunningham and now Carter) dominating the NL west and we will be making the Rangers look good. I'm sure the Arizona GM loves to see Kenny, he's guaranteed one of our top 10 prospects for leftovers anytime they get together.
I did a bit of research and he was the second pick of the first round in 2003. He has had a few injuries(tommy john) and a torn labrum. He at least has talent......I think it's a good pickup for the future, but not sure he can help immediately for a playoff run.

Good peripheral pick up but we keep subtracting pitching, known good players for long shots. The brief highlights looks like he is a solid player but we must not keep getting rid of good pitching like Garland, Garcia. So what his contract was up next year well work in the off season to sign these players. Don't wait until its a distraction. We've been doing this in Chicago baseball for over 100 years. When you have a good core build around it and improve not subtract and hope your prospects will make it at the major league level. Come on Kenny get us some major league talent. How about this guy from Tampa Crawford he's fast and hits for power. You're a good GM make up for last year with some good deals not subtractions of talent.
Getting Quentin was a great deal. The guy is a potential 25-HR, 90-RBI outfielder. And he's just 25 years old. He is certainly worth the gamble. A year ago he was one of the top hitting prospects in the National League.
If this guy is anything more than a 5th outfielder for us, what does it say? Arizona gave up on him and they are closer than we are to getting to the WS.... The Tigers trade just made it a lot harder.I imagine Riensdork is looking at the market and the cometition and thinking that it is time to cut back on spending, let the fans suffer for the next 3-4(10???) years and then hopefully have a shot at challenging on the cheap once the Indians, Tigers, Red Sox and Angels current teams get old or run their course. It looks like it is going to take 100 wins to win the division and 95-7 to get a wild card! Dooooh!
Add the Dodgers to the Phils & White Sox as teams reluctant to go to 5 yrs for Rowand. I've read the White Sox now seem willing to go to 4. That might make them the front runner. The latest rumor is that the Phils are willing to overpay (more than $12mil/yr) for a 3 yr deal. One thing hindering the Phils is their pursuit of Hiroki Kuroda. The M's are offering $44/4.
The Royals offered Jose Guillen $36/3. $12mil for a decent OF is becoming the norm.
While the Tigers look to have the pkg Florida wants don't forget M Cabrera's relationship with Ozzie. The wives are best friends.
Because Jackson is due big $ in 2009 AZ had to make a move in hopes of finding his replacement. Right now, Carter is too weak to play 1B regularly in the NL. CQ had little hope of being more than a 4th OF in AZ so at least now he's getting a chance. I'd give the edge to the Sox right now because there's at least a chance of CQ being an impact player for them in 2008.

Andruw Jones to LAD for a front-loaded $36/2. He'll make $15 in 09. Kenny should do that for Rowand since the Sox have $ now.
Blame KW for not getting Cabrera+Willis. As the Sentinel puts it, talent-wise FL would have been better off trading Cabrera to LAA for their pkg of Kendrick, Mathis, Adenhart, & Willits. They believe waiting to trade Willis at the deadline in July would have not only have doubled the number of blue chip prospects but also garned more rev at the gate. So KW missed out on a fire-sale. That's how the rich & near rich (DET) get richer in talent.
There is yet one more opportunity for KW to land a big fish. Rolen wants out of STL in a big way. He hates LaRussa now. He will cost less than Crede over the next 3 yrs. This fact is so well known that STL can't even drum up a multi-player deal for him. That means their focus has to shift to straight up & Crede figures large there. It won't take much more than Crede to land Rolen.
Fans would soon forget the loss of Garland, the failure to land Cabrera or Hunter, & the fact Maggs plays for DET if KW were to put both Rolen & Rowand under the X-mas tree.
Look back on these Carlos Quentin (potential AL MVP) comments just 9 months later. Wow.
